For those who were wondering what that was at 0:40, the TGV was first designed as a gas-turbine powered train similar to the Turboliner. The 70's and the oil crisis drove them in the right direction, considering most of the nation runs on nuclear power.

Even though I agree that being critical of your government is good, most protest movements in France are counter productive and end up doing more harm than good. For instance in the rail world, train conductors are notorious for going on strike, paralyzing the entire country, and encouraging many people to take their cars as the trains are unreliable. Being critical is good, going apeshit whenever anything happens is much less so.

@@Ronor i don't think so. French private workers are free to unionize and strike no problem, but only 8% of french workers are actually unionized. And the whole country is led by three major unions which decide when major strikes take place. So it's extremely unrepresentative of what the workers actually think. I've actually heard from family members (which is in no way proof) that back in the 80's when there were major strikes at steel foundries, unions would put big guys with clubs at the entrance of the factory to keep the workers who wanted to go work from getting in. And if we were to compare, germany and Switzerland have better quality of life (and railservice for that matter), and i don't see them striking every week.

Fashion goes in circles. Always has done. I remember thinking how dated and tacky all kinds of things from the 80s were a couple of decades back. Now much of it is cool again! So many modern pop songs sound like they were made in 1985, modern cars mimic the 80s style cars, and so on. Wait long enough and just about anything will come back into fashion. The TGV is awesome. I remember going from Zurich to Paris in one afternoon at 300km/h.
The train was showing its age, but still a comfortable and fast ride. Also quite affordable. Even if I would have a car, I would choose the TGV if possible, because it is so much faster and so much more relaxing. Taking a nap at 300km/h is only possible in a train or a plane. Definitely not in a car.
Its quite sad how much "high speed" rail sucks in Germany in comparison. We have nice Inter City Express (ICE) trains, but the rail network is more than 100 years old and falling apart to the point where trains designed for 300km/h can only go 80km/h.

Fortunately we seem to have got the message now and are catching up. @@adelaide7822 HS2 is certainly happening, construction is already well underway. It's interesting because our current government party (center-right) was once very anti-rail and pro-road, but right now they are putting massive funding into our railways. As well as HS2 there are a number of big electrification schemes, loads of new train sets and even some previously closed lines are being re-built. Also the overall UK rail system has just been defacto re-nationalized albeit most trains will still be operated by contract. I hope all EU governments will do similar because it will work so much better as a Europe wide system if all countries have good connections.

@@rebeccacothron2871 It made a lot of sense at the time sine Japan is very mountainous and a narrower rail gauge is beneficial for that. And Japans settlement structure means that you can connect the majority of the population with just a few lines so it's not all that bad.

I remember my first TGV trip between Paris and Lyon (and back): back in 1981, when the line opened, I accompanied my young son and his classmates and teacher to this science/technology/history trip through the French countryside (and Burgundy vineyards) down to the Capital of Gauls' at "only" 260km/h (the average speed then at the opening of the very first leg of the first French very high speed line).
Now, Marseille is 3hrs from Paris, London 2hrs, Brussels 1hr and the trains with their double deck coaches ride at 320km/h...

While the TGV Sud-Est sets entered service in the 1980s, I think they (not to mention the turbo prototype shown at the start) are unquestionably a 1970s aesthetic design. The ETR 450 Pendolinos in Italy were also 1970s design. For some quintessential 1980s train design, try the Shinkansen Series 100, the ICE-V prototype in Germany, or the SBB Re 4/4 IV locos from Switzerland.
Back to the 1970s, there was an aesthetically very pleasing train that should have shown the future to Europe but it took longer: the Class 403 in Germany. This semi-high-speed train had distributed traction like Shinkansens, also like modern Siemens Velaros, AnsaldoBreda/Bombardier Zefiros or CAF Oarises in Europe, but unlike the tractor head concept of all TGVs and the first generation of ICE trains in Germany and ETR 500 trains in Italy. One problem with the Class 403 was that it was too short (four cars long, built when intercity trains were stupidly first-class-only). Another was that it was built with one of the many failed tilting technologies (the tilting itself worked but people felt ill), limiting carbody cross-section. The distributed traction itself wasn't very maintenance-friendly back in the day, although it was still manageable for the Class 403. (Still, in contrast to Shinkansens where only end cars are trailers, most European distributed-traction high-speed trains only have half of their axles driven, not all like the 403.)
