I grew a japanese maple tree from seed ...and he is now already 20 years old. He stand in a huge terracotta pot ...and I will take him always with me when I move to a new place. Very hapoy with it.

This video was so extremely helpful. I have zero gardening/growing experience and all the videos I've found on this subject are just people talking at you. Having the visual examples in your video helps so much. For instance, visualizing how big of a pot you need based on the size of the root ball or explaining exactly how much water they need.
I had two in the south of France for years. We had a massive heat wave and they both died. I was heartbroken! Trying again with new ones, so scared it will happen again. Love watching them go through their autumn shed and seeing the fresh spring growth. Such stunning plants ❤
I feel sorry for you. I have been almost there. Last year I caught covid. It was during heatwave. I was half conscious. I spotted my biggest one hours from death. It lost most of leaves but survived. I have upgraded pot's saucer to deeper one. Gives me a peace of mind for a week. Btw, tree is 6ft 20yo Firecracker.

Good video, very helpful and interesting. I have three Acer trees in containers, one never seem to grow, it just produces leaves but never grows, the other two have grown well over the years and are ready to be repotted. One of the acers only seems to grow branches on one side of the trunk the other side of the trunk has no branches.
This was very, very helpful. I have a young tree and she has very few leaves on her. We are approaching winter soon, so it's good to know that losing leaves from fall through winter is normal.
I'm very glad to hear that! LYoung trees usually do not have many leaves even in the growing season, but they become more and more beautiful every year🍁

Glad you found it helpful! Some red-leaf Japanese maples may turn green in intense sun, or on the contrary, in too much shade. So location in the morning sun is usually the best. It looks like your maple tree is in full sun pretty much all day, so maybe that's the cause 🌿 Mine is getting morning sun and stays red in summer.

Your patio looks amazing! It’s true there’s a few basics things but seriously JM are super easy to grow in pots. Just like growing conifers or evergreens in pots.

They grow very slowly, so you could easily buy a small, young tree and enjoy it for many years ☺️! In garden centers you can often buy young Japanese maples that are not taller than 30 cm (1ft) or you could opt for bonsai 🍁
@@17m2garden Takao grows VERY fast (it's basically the wild forest version of japanses maples that makes new ones via seed), first year 70cm, second year 1.65 meter (even if multistem). Luckely there are plenty of them slower ones and even ultra slow one (dwarf kind) :D
Thanks for video, i got orange dream, Osakazuki, skeeter's broom and japonicum aconitifolium (in ground) but small 6*10 meter garden. I'm min maxing like you, anyone who tells me i plant to much in this small garden anoys crap out of me :D

For very young trees you can use multipurpose and ericaceous potting mix 50-50. For mature trees use soil-based (loam based) 50-50 with ericaceous potting mix.
Thank you! Would you have any advice on how to mix those 2 types when repotting the plant? Do I measure the quantity needed, mix the 2 in a separate bowl, then use it as you show in the video?

Hi! I used ericaceous potting mix and garden soil 50-50. But you can use ericaceous with multipurpose potting mix as well.
Besides adding mulch to the top, do you need to wrap the pot with bubble wrap or burlap for the winter?
If the soil only freezes for short periods, days or a couple of weeks at a time, and then has a chance to thaw, this is not necessary. But if the soil in your growing zone tends to freeze for long periods of time, then yes. Water your trees thoroughly in the fall and wrap them in bubble wrap or a burlap bag filled with straw to prevent the soil from freezing, and water occasionally if needed throughout the winter.

If you get temperatures down to around 5c you can. But don`t believe you do.
Ive had my maple for 25 years ,a few weeks ago end of June its leafs started to die ,within 2 weeks all the leafs have died and has started to fall off 😢,i think its root bound in the pot ,its a 15 x 19 inch pot ,would it be ok to repot it now or still wait until September?
Oh no....! That is so sad, I'm really sorry for you! You can definitely take it out of its pot to inspect the root system. It's always best to repot trees when they are dormant between late autumn and early spring but if the root system is indeed very pot-bound and your tree is clearly not doing well, repotting it now isn't a bad idea. If you end up doing that, keep the plant in the shade for the rest of the summer and keep the soil moist. Hope your tree bounces back 🤞

Will these grow in Perth Western Australia. Can I put it into my garden or does it have to be a pot?
You could totally grow them in the ground as well! But I believe you are in zone 11a in Perth? In this case, winters most likely won't be cold enough for these trees, as they need a cold dormancy period. But it may be a good idea to ask some garden centers/nurseries in your area for additional advice or suggestions 🍁

Hi Dominika! Have you ever experienced pests on your Japanese maple? I have this miniature insect that resemble ticks, and add attached to the leaves and stems. Any tops on how to treat my poor trees?
Hi! Yes, I sometimes have aphids on my Acers before the leaf buds open. They usually go away when the leaves fully develop or ladybirds arrive to eat them 🐞 Pests are normal btw! It's part of gardening, if you don't have pests you won't have any beneficial creatures. Plant some flowers that attract ladybirds and your trees will be fine, trust me 😉!
Does this work for american / european maple trees too? I am asking because they are typically very tall trees
Yes the same care principles can be applied to any other maple, but if you are thinking about growing them permanently in pots, I would recommend sticking with dwarf or semi-dwarf varieties.

Excellent presentation!! Just what I needed. It gets very windy where we live, and even though we have space, I’m not sure it’s a good idea to plant them in the ground. So I’ll pot them all up and keep them close to the house.
