- Major General George Gordon Meade's Army of the Potomac and General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia met at the Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. After three days of fighting, that town would be the site of the bloodiest battle on American soil and the bloodiest battle in American History. Day one saw Confederate forces capture the town, but Union forces would fortify the hills and ridges outside of the town. A. P. Hill's Third Corps and Richard Ewell's Second Corps would clash with John Reynold's First Corps and Oliver Otis Howard's Eleventh Corps on the first day.

Finally if I understand the first day’s battlefield action, it helps to remember this generalization.. the south attacked from the North and the North attacked from the south ..awesome.. thank you Sir for sharing this history
Let me suggest to you an audio book by the famous author Shelby Foote the title of the book is THE STARS IN THEIR COURSES, basically the Battle Gettysburg .... and is narrated by the author

The only thing that would make this better is a time clock in the corner giving people an idea as to what time these avents took place
The Iron brigade on the first day of the battle of Gettysburg was legendary.
The movie Gettysburg gives the impression that Buford held against repeated attacks by Heth. In fact, Buford's two brigades suffered about 125 casualties on the first day, with the vast majority occurring during the afternoon's action defending the left flank on Seminary Ridge against Lane's Brigade. The handful of casulaties suffered in the morning engagement with Heth is proof that Heth never seriously tried to brush Buford out of his way which he could have done at any time. Heth did not launch his first attack in strength until the leading elements of the I Corps arrived. Heth's attack was repulsed but fixed the Union defense in position facing west. Rodes came up in perfect position to strike the right flank of the Union line on Oak Ridge but botched the attack, fighting his brigades in detail rather than delivering a coordinated attack. This necessitated Hill to conduct frontal attacks on the McPherson's Ridge line by Heth's remaining two brigades and an assault on the Seminary Ridge position by Pender's Division. Early hit the XI Corps right flank perfectly and drove it from its position. Lee's order to Ewell to assault Cemetery Hill carried two caveats; if practicable and only with the troops under Ewell's command. Rodes' Division was combat blown and disordered by the street grid of Gettysburg and would have to march out of town in front of Cemetery Hill in column and deploy into battle lines under the 20 guns on that eminence. Gordon and Smith were out on the York Pike guarding the flank and Hays was guarding prisoners and policing the battlefield. That left Ewell Avery's small brigade to conduct an assault. Still, Ewell told he could attack if supported by Hill. Heth and Pender had shot their bolt conducting the frontal assaults against the I Corps and although Anderson's Division was on the field Lee would not commit his only reserve. Johnson was not on the battlefield when needed at 4pm and by 7pm when he did arrive it was too late to assault Cemetery Hill or to occupy Culp's Hill. The great mystery is why Johnson did not follow Rodes but instead wound up in the Cashtown Gap which delayed Anderson and prevented Longstreet from reaching the field on the first day. Lee could not have asked for a better setup to defeat a part of the AoP in detail but his two new corps commanders were unable to give him the decisive victory he needed. With Hancock able to patch together a line to hold the high ground, Meade committed to the position and won the race to fully concentrate his army.
Wouldn't it have been great if the movie Gettysburg had been written as a trilogy with one movie for each day?

When hearing the details of the first day's fighting, you can get a good idea of the destruction of the I and XI Corps on the first day of fighting. Taking of the smaller details into account, both forces overall put up good fights but overwhelming forces and heavy casualties compelled them to retreat. It was such a pity the Iron Brigade suffered devastating losses in the battle. It was one of the Army of the Potomac's toughest units. As for the fight with the Mississippians in the railroad cut, the capture of the Rebel standard and 225 prisoners were impressive feats as was the fight of the 149th Pennsylvania, as they were one of many regiments fighting for their home state in this battle. As for the 26th North Carolina, the fact it was one of the largest regiments in the Army of Northern Virginia, and lost a little over half their number at Gettysburg, is appalling. It reminds me of the Texas Brigade which lost 354 out of 800 men in the cornfield at Antietam, with one of it's regiments losing 82% of it's men alone. Such horrible losses. It was impressive the 200 man 16th Maine managed to put a good fighting withdrawal in the face of a larger Confederate force and was basically destroyed in the fight. Does anyone know the difference between a fighting and fire and movement withdrawal? Look forward to Day 2!

The Union’s loss on the first day, resulted in them gaining the high ground. This high ground gave them the victories the next two days and the advantage on Independence Day

I'm going to have to redo Barksdale's Charge and Culps Hill so it's going to take a couple of weeks to put those together. Hopefully before July ends I'll have them done.

I visited Gettysburg with my US cousins many years ago - loved it but also very heavy place. I love my Napoleonic history too - but yet to visit Waterloo or any of those major battles like Austerlitz, Wavre etc

Great what if question. Would Reynolds have survived if he hadn’t personaly led the 2nd Wisconsin into Herbst woods? What if instead of a left echelon formation he would have formed a compact battle line with the 2nd Wis. 7th Wis.19th Ind and 24 Mich and then moved forward towards Herbst woods? We’ll never know but it’s interesting to speculate
@@wmschooley1234and if he’d done as you suggested, would the position in the cut held long enough for the attack to go in? Or would the Federals have been pushed back before said attack was mounted and Oak Ridge fallen hours earlier than it did? One will never know. So many dominos.
Great video, but I believe you have the timing a little off.....the Iron Brigade (2nd, 7th WI, 19th IN, 24th MI) would have engaged Archer at Willoughby Run before the 6th Wisconsin charges the Railroad cut, not after?
Because of the size of the engagement, some segments have to be discussed as a whole before I move to another sector. Thank you for pointing that out.

Thank you so much! One of my videos within the second day had ruined audio, so I am going to redo it and other videos to create the second day. The videos are out, Culps Hill, Cemetery Hill, Barksdale's Charge, and Devils Den. I'm redoing them and will hopefully have them out this year.

I believe my Grandfathers grand father fought in Gettysburg under General Mahoney but i have had trouble finding this information.

How about covering Lees retreat from Petersburg to Appomattox? Keep up the good work.
Mr. Wilson: I agree. But maybe Dr. Wilder could start the Appomattox campaign touching on the battles of Fort Stedman, Five Forks and Sutherland Station. These aren't typically considered part of the Appomattox campaign but they give a lot of background and context to why the wheels fell off the ANV in a week culminating in Lee’s surrender on April 9, 1865.
was there a full day 2 & 3 on this? is see lots of videos and special on generals etc but i cannot see a 2nd and 3rd day on Gettyburg like this day 1??

Hancock, made day 2 and 3 by place of troops at the end of day 1. Day 2 hero was Warren by placing men on little round top.
Don't count Hancock out on the Second Day. He sent troops to protect the Union line around the wheat field.
When can we expect Day 2 and 3?
Gettysburg is such a large battle, I am breaking it up into pieces. Two segments of either Day 2 or 3 will be done in July. My patrons on patreon will decide which ones i will do. Maybe devils den or Pickett's Charge, or even the third day at Culps Hill.

What’s the difference in a pike and road?
In some places pike is an abbreviation for the word turnpike which is a road maintained by paying a toll to use it.
I will elaborate further on what schooley said. Taxes in the early years of our nation were very few and far between. Roads were needed for trade but they did cost money to make and maintain. The labor also wasn't always available to build said roads in largely unsettled areas. From 1792 to 1845 families would often build and maintain pikes at cost to travelers. Not farmers for the most part, but those families invested in vocations in trade. Roadside Inns, Grist Mills, Foundries, and General stores are a few examples. Pikes usually existed where the geography became challenging for wagons.
As townships grew the need for pikes lessened and local governments provided the funding for the infrastructure. Industry demanded it, Agriculture... not so much.
Always remember Lee did have cavalry.
This video should have shown a much better view of the area of the battles relative to the town and the rest of the battle field, it's too limited in the small views and the symbology is very poor, you need to re-think this so it is easier to see for the viewer.
The Iron Brigade losing the 6th WI being detached was fateful for many men.
Gettysburg didn’t deliver a decisive follow up victory to Chancellorsville. Gettysburg didn’t deliver a “knock out” blow or destroy the Army of the Potomac. Gettysburg didn’t destroy Northern morale. Gettysburg didn’t result in foreign diplomatic recognition or aid. Gettysburg didn’t relieve Grant’s pressure on Vicksburg. The Army of Northern Virginia suffered over 37 percent casualties at Gettysburg. After only four days in command, Gettysburg was General Meade’s first (but definitely not last) engagement with Lee’s ANV. Not too bad for Meade even if the first days battle wasn’t a resounding Union success. Like Grant said at Shiloh, “lick’em tomorrow, though”. Respectfully, W.S.
The eastern soldiers were superior to their western counterparts inboth inflicting damage and beind able to absorb punishment.
