A good few years back there was a documentary called step into liquid.
Hydrofoil-ing big waves is introduced there by some other legends. Its great to see that Kai's passion has brought him to explore this as well.

Surprisingly long mast. Not sure about the pluses & minuses of that on such huge waves. The water on the wave face is pretty smooth, on the other hand, the potential for turbulence & white water is extreme.

There is the Wing-In-Ground (WIG) effect, the board essentially flies close to the water surface while supported by a field of high-pressure air beneath it and above the water surface. This creates the impression that it's simply gliding above a cushion of air. Drag is amplified by the posture of Kai standing up and height above the water surface in relationship to reduce the WIG effect , more drag is addes by the foil size. But Kai is ballzy as ever.
The WIG effect can work for and against you
For the wing in ground effect to happen the wing needs to be near the ground or in water the sea floor, so being just below the surface doesn't cause this.

As a non surfer (fuckin' shit scared of sharks!!) I came across Kai Lenny videos earlier this week. The wife (who did surf when younger) was watching him on YT. Watching him bouncing off waves & doin' 360s comin' down the face of those waves in Hawaii I thought he was one of the best surfers I've ever seen. I may have never surfed but I know lots who do & have done & have watched lots of surf stuff over the years.
Nazaré actually means Nazareth, as in Jesus of Nazareth, so it's actually biblical ahah. Greeting from Portugal.

An Australian invented the hydro foil? Really? I think hydro foils have been around for over 100 years and personally I have ridden waves on my hydro foil 20 years ago before laird even adapted the water ski foil chair to a surfboard to foil waves on. So when and which Australian are you referring to?
@@capodad2u The judo foil is ancient technology from First Nations people ie aboriginal civilisation in Australia 🇦🇺 then Hawaii and other places like Tahiti, New Zealander s ect, the Aussie I was referring to helped a boat builder who designed the wing keel design that helped propel Australia to win the America’s cup in off the coast of Rhode Island in 1983I think, his name is Ben Lexen I 🤔Boat was called Australia ll

So your saying the aboriginal Australians invented the hydrofoil and hydrofoil surfing? I think I would credit laird with that one, although others did attempt to put a hydrofoil on surfboards in the 60's with limited success. I rode waves (barely) on my aquaskipper hydrofoil which is a human propelled device many years ago. Laird Hamilton is widely considered the person responsible for making hydrofoil surfing a practical reality. Did Australians invent surfing too?
@@capodad2u I’m not saying an a Australian invented hydro foil surfing that credit does go to laird 👍👍 he used an Australian designed technology, but laird definitely propelled surfing into the 21st century with his tow in surfing and use of the wing foil keel, and surfing came from the aboriginal population descended from the aboriginals from terra Australis, who populated the Hawaiian islands and other pacific islands over the course of millions of years. We are the first people.

Holy shit! In some of the first surf footage, somewhere in the first 5 minutes, he gets launched out the front from the explosion of the lip! That looked deadly violent! It's lucky he wasn't hurt. And shortly after, the launch off the lip out the back was a good 50 feet in the air! Crazy!

As someone moving to China to live and work, dreading not being able to surf, I am happy to see Hainan has a few waves, however fickle they may be.
@oldschoolwaverider Hainan gets really good, don't sweat it! Also, if you're able to shoot over to Taiwan, plenty of great waves there, too. Good luck mate!

Wait, did Kai say that Nazare has only been discovered in the last 8 years? Because in the 1990s, it was made sort of famous to the public in the movie Point Break. I went back to see if he said "80" years, but I still heard "eight".

We don't have tolls on Maui because we don't have drivable roads on Maui
In Portugal you have alternative roads to avoid tollls.
You only pay tolls in some the largest highways. He from Airport in Lisbon to going to Nazaré need to catch the A8 highway and the cost from Lisbon to Nazaré is about 7,05€ (~10 USDolls).
Time is money if you choose the alternative roads need at least 2hours and half to reach Nazaré (but the view along the sea is great), you pass inside small towns with lot of churches and small castles.
Using the highway no view only hills but is faster only 1hour and 40 minutes (very careful with speeding in the highway, if you enter the highway (they have cameras that regist the time) and you when you let the highway and the computer make the calculation based in kms you run through and the time you took you to do it, and if that calculations is >132km/h (max speed is 120km/h but they give a 10% of tolerance) you going to have a speed ticket/fine.
