Life is not over for you Thomas. Some of us have been born to live the dream but physical limitations come with age. Like Laird I learned to swim at age 2. By age 5, I was training in Lac St. Louis , Q.C. in hopes of winning swimming medals at sixteen.Things happen on the journey that you cannot anticipate.I remember having a stroke in the water at 42, when my workouts were about 100 lengths mid afternoon in Molokai.I fortunately pushed through the side strokes and with the help of a Russian doctor continued my long distance swimming for the entire summer.Never give up your passion. You can still enjoy water sports like boogie boarding, body surfing and stand up paddle. Just keep loving your life one day at a time. Haopiness comes in the "present tense" like a friend of mine said.

they are gliding at such a ridiculous speed ... this is , again , next level ...I think, if we are honest, we must recognize that the legacy that Laird is presenting us , will definitely surpass his life span ... no matter how old he's gonna be ... I'm am grateful for the big steps he , and his crew, have made to put some of us ( at least , the tough ones ), into this new dimension of surfing ... thank God, he's one of these guys who sees the necessity to step into the unknown , and he does it like it was the most normal thing in the world ... well, even balls of steel wouldn't be enough to ride hydrofoil on these giants, it's more to it, than the average guy can understand ... it's a well balanced mix of experience in a field, where ( being rather new ) , you go with trial and error , and do your own stunts ... it's about dependability, it's physical and mental strength , it's creativity, it's self confidence , without overestimating your possibilities ... too much to list, but I think you get the Idea ... Thanks Laird, one hell of a ride ! You're truly pushing boundaries !

I just watched this in June 2022 and it's a really IMPRESSIVE video all the way around. Truly great video and editing! I learned about efoiling just recently, so that's what got me here. I don't know who any of these people are, but I appreciated their attitude and commentary throughout the video. I liked how Laird(?) said that we shouldn't separate ourselves due to equipment, and he's right. I'm just a guy in Ohio who has occasionally boogie boarded at Lake Erie (small watercraft advisory due to wind) and New Jersey beaches and body surfed for 25+ years at a wave pool. But I'm still, in the barest sense, a surfer, and appreciate all types of surfing! It's great to see new ideas and equipment being developed that can broaden the sport and bring more people in.

Yes, he seeks/likes publicity but only because it enables him to pay for the life he has chosen to lead. Congratulations to Laird Hamilton and team for pioneering the frontiers of surfing - thank you for an incredible chapter in your story!!... which I have followed since 'Riding Liquid Giants'. So many questions I would love to ask: what special training do you need to ride the foil...? What muscle groups are you mainly using? It looks easier to ride than a conventional big wave board - as if less skill is required than conventional big wave riding .... (or am i totally wrong and it's the opposite?!). You dont show any wipeouts. Perhaps there is less risk because you can use speed like a jetski to go anywhere you want at any moment and zoom out of trouble... ?
These are just the comments of a landlocked youtube surfer who had the good fortune to live by the sea as a pre-teen, rode small waves decades ago for a few years and not much since.. so bear with me ;) - it's a beautiful exciting story you tell and huge respect and success to your endeavours.

"In another dimension," what way out on the shoulder you mean?! It looks amazing, only they never ride the critical part of the wave; why is that? Is it a limitation of foiling in general, or will foil design and rider skill push them deeper on the wave as the sport progresses?

Richard you kinda missed the entire point. It’s a complete departure from regular surfing. Your perspective is kinda limiting from the standpoint of free thinking about all aspects of being a true waterman/water woman. Why not surf, sail, dive, foil, windsurf, biggie, longboard, and short board? Free your mind...

@@gsmarin1 My mind is free to think about and criticise whatever I want. Laird said himself, that foiling is surfing. But "a whole other dimension?!" calm down mate. I'm not going to criticise Lairds accomplishments as a waterman, just that statement is imo an excessive exaggeration. I don't think it's as hyper or as gnarly as it's being made out to be. Totally epic? Absolutely. And of course, opinions are like arseholes, and you're entitled to your own. I'm pretty sure that a main goal of guys that're foiling will be to push the design of the foils and their abilities to ride deeper. I'm just wondering if there's a limit with what's possible; i.e., getting barrelled? And if you think I only ride one type of board, one type of wave or one type of bike, think again.

The other dimension is riding parts of the wave and stages of it that traditional boards can’t do. You can foil critical parts of a wave. Have you ever foiled? I’ll use Dave Kalama’s description, it’s like surfing a unicycle. If you watch closely you’ll see the riders making fast micro weight adjustments to manage the wing angle according to the variable speeds. The last thing you want is a wave smacking your back or the foil at those speeds.

@@BrentDuty Thanks man... yeah I noticed the guys shifting their hips back n forth like people do manualing a bike or skateboard. And no, I'd really like to try it though. I still think there's a lot of hype and exaggeration, but then that's yt for ya.
