Those fine lines and schooner rig is what might be called a Baltimore Clipper.

Pickle does look a bit like a Baltimore Clipper and very fine vessels those were, although she wasn't one. At that period ships were developing quite rapidly. Tom is wrong to suggest English shipbuilders were very conservative at that period. The English were at least as adventurous as anyone else. They had to compete with the French and others. Her lines were taken off at Plymouth however despite what some people claim, we don't know where or by whom she was built. There is one contemporary painting that shows HMS Pickle as a detail that was very likely overseen by her commander when in London having delivered The Trafalgar Dispatch (quoted on my web site). You can find my paintings and many of my extensive research notes on my web site in "The Nelson & Trafalgar Collection", www.frickers.co.uk/art/marine-art/war-ships/the-trafalgar-collection/.

As Captain Smollet said of the schooner Hispaniola: “She’ll lie a point nearer the wind than a man has a right to expect of his own married wife.”

If the wooden gunport doors were hinged on the bottom so they opened down, when the ship turned and they were open, the water would've closed them. I wonder if the famous ship that sunk in front on the king right outside the port when the Spanish armada was there, I wonder if it would've stayed afloat?

Sorry Pal. At 17:20 on the video you come across claiming a 'Force Eight' wind when it's OBVIOUSLY not even a Force Four. That really switched me off. For good.

A race is always a good story but the purpose of this race is frankly absurd and hard to sympathize with.
