Dann and Lukather were quite literally THE rock guitar sound of the 80s (only surpassed by King Edward). There were bands that had their guys, but in that era when it was hip to add some rock guitar to a pop song, it was these guys and this was indeed the sound of the era. And I love it. This was the most musically influential period for me.
I put Dann in a class of great guitarists that cut their teeth as studio musicians first, and then just wrecked my hopes as a guitarist with their bands. Steve Lukather, Neal Schon, Dann Huff, Reb Beach, etc. these guys can just play anything. You put on a track from Toto, or Winger, Giant or early Journey, or even Hardline, and you instantly know who you’re hearing on the six string. I have long been in awe of Dann Huff’s talent. The man just oozes musicality.
Dan Huff and Brad Gillis of Night Ranger are two of the handle of guys who could play the tremolo bar soulfully apart from EVH and Jeff Beck, Simply beautiful
I love watching this video. Dan is so talented musically, vocally, and is such an amazing guitarist. He knows when to shred and knows when to slow it down. Stay is such a great song.
Great info.,Dann Huff. i just heard Peter Ceter'a number one hit, Glory of Love, from the early 80's again today and the guitar work in that song caught my attention.Very nice! I was pleased to learn you played on that track. Just wanted to comment and compliment you on all the great work you have done on so many projects over the years. Great work!!!
Dann Huff was/is a bad ass player! Great tone, phrasing and chops- I thought Giant should have been bigger (no pun intended!) back in the day. Picked up their first release on CD and it's still great!
I don't know really who was Dan Huff but the Lp of Giant hook my ears with these incredible sound, riff and solo great album great band and excellent guitarist bthank you for sharing ;)
I love Dann Huff’s music, he should continue making good music as a soloist with his own band,I hope he considers it,his fans wish him to continue recording good music as he knows how to do, I hope so,it is never too late to continue with his good music…
An absolutely awesome piece. I discovered Giant due the Ken Tamplin's forum. But Ken dont teaching that voice like a healthy voice. Well I think Dann Huff had a lot of talent but he saw the philosophical and ethical aspects of his young discourse. Otherwise he still continue doing the Giant vocals currently. My thoughts. cheers
Absofuckinutely. Dann is well known and incredibly well respected, as both a singer/guitarist and. World class producer. I miss Giant. The self titled debut and Time to Burn are fantastic albums.

Has Dann ever mentioned here or anywhere else what kind of guitar pick he uses, or is that one of his "secret weapons" in getting the tone that he gets?
dan19630 I don’t recall ever reading what he uses. Seems to be a pretty heavy pick gauge, as he really hammers the low end strings. I use a .88 mm Fender med-heavy. My gut tells me he’s using at least a 1 mm heavy watching him in the studio. There’s so much finesse in his playing, but when he rips through those runs, he’s really digging in. I also wonder what gauge strings he’s using here. He’d break the high E on my Ibanez with his first bend, haha.
Its funny you say that cos i read that when Dann Huff produced a Megadeth record and Dave Mustaine kept getting rejected by asking Dann for some guitar lessons constantly! He really wants to keep his ability to himself! hahah
Tiger Same with his guitar picks. You can see that he's holding it while he's talking. On the close-up shots the camera breaks away right at the moment when you almost can see what type of pick it is. You will not find any information what kind of guitar picks that he uses. Guitar pick is a very integral part of a players tone. Most players will share with the interviewer on what kind of guitar picks they use. I know that Dan uses Dean Markley strings at least he did during the giant years. But there is absolutely no place where you can find information on the guitar picks that he would have used back then. He doesn't want anybody copying his sound. I even sent him a message on Facebook asking that very question. I got no response. I guess he's keeping that info classified. Lol!
@valleyarts1992 hey,i like how you call yourself....those VA beauties (of course pre-samick)are for me absolutely best out there..btw, you wouldn't know where can you get one??
The more popular version (the one on the album and video) was played by Adrian Vandenberg. Huff played on the 'radio' version that cut out the long keyboard/vocal intro.
The two singles are early Seymour Duncan noiseless/stacked pickups either classic stack or hot stacks. I don't know if hot stacks came in black also, or red only... FWIW
Matteo Santiloni that’s a modified ‘63 Fender Stratocaster in sunburst with Duncan Hot Stacks (pickups) which are quite difficult to find. People called it the “Huffcaster”; awesome tones!
A 1964 Strat modded by Jim Tyler. Two Seymour Duncan Hot stacks and JB Humbucker with series/parallel switching a Demeter mid boost and a switch that adds the neck Pickup to any position.
rushbum I agree. Both are very creative with their pick attack, and their use of the trem bar. Dann’s leads are so melodic, and they are deceptively easy sounding because he’s so good. It sounds almost effortless. The first time I sat down and tried the studio solo in Stay, all the little nuances of what he was doing became painfully clear. He’s easily one of my favorite soloists. Giant’s first whole album, especially, just kicks my ass.
@UberShredder9 If you get it,you should be ashamed of yourself. Make other people(Me) feel envious like this(like a damn lot!!!),should be against the law and punishable by prison.

daniel morales Dann and Steve Lukather are two of my biggest influences. Both studio cats with just ridiculous feel and technical ability. I didn’t study music in college as a major (but had private instruction), but pretty much all my friends were performance majors, and on Friday nights, we’d all plug in and jam out. The reverence for both those guys (I started college in 1990, so Giant was well known then) was clear. Guys were always breaking down Huff, Lukather and Neal Schon.
Still unsurpassed. Dann's tone, feel, phrasing, vibrato and chops is the ultimate for melodic rock. Plus his vocals and producer skills. D a y m n!
Absolutely beautiful vibrato use, eh. One to emulate.
