  • In this video, Derek explains what flash gas is, how it's created, and methods to successfully capture/recover it. He quickly overviews the hydrocarbon phase diagram and then discusses how flash gas is created by pressure changes during the production of hydrocarbons in our surface separation equipment. Lastly, he ties all of the information back to project economics and relevancy to regulatory entities.

    Informative, I am just going to commission one Garo Made Vapor recovery compressor VRC at our crude dewatering station, We do not have the LP tower however we are bringing vapors to VRC from Skimming Tanks, water disposal Tanks(they get water from Separator) etc., and after compressing we have a flash tank with coolers, then we send the gas to either HP flare or towards Gas company.

      @@OilfieldBasics hey, I'm a hand looking to learn more about what I'm working on. I'd love to know how a "Greg" or condenser skid collects flash gas and how that's transfered back to the sales line.

      @@nathanprice8267 Thanks for the question and for your desire to learn more! I just need a little bit more clarification. Are you basically wanting to know how a flash gas compressor works (inside/functionally)? Like just the compressor that takes the low-pressure gas and gets it up to line pressure...or are you wanting to know how the gas is literally captured before compression (which this video addresses somewhat)?

      @@OilfieldBasics well yes and no. I've been working on glycol regeneration skids or "Greg" skids for short. They take ritch glycol and burn the water and gas off to make lean glycol. But some how they are capturing flash gas as a by product to be sent to a VRU. I was hoping you could explain how they capture the gas and build enough pressure to get it to the VRU.

      @@nathanprice8267 Thanks for getting back with me. I think I'm getting closer to the right ballpark here... Does this regen skid also have a tall (contact) tower beside it? The only time I've seen regen skids used is to dehydrate the gas before going into the sales line...in other words, using the tower to remove the water from the gas and then the regen to rejuvenate the glycol for use again in the tower. Does this sound correct?

    Very informative, thank you! Time to time I encounter thick paraffin "pellets" anywhere from the size of Nerds candy to the size of sweet peas) when loading crude into a tanker truck which requires frequent filtering and clogs up everything from the load line strainer to valves and pumps. Any info on the causes and solutions to paraffin in crude holding tanks would be pretty cool to learn about. Thanks again and keep up the awesome videos

      Adding a VRT will make a world of difference with fighting o2. A low pressure separator will help with not flushing your vapor recovery tower because of high pressure dumps. Thanks for the video with zero emissions coming in Texas it important to hurry up and get in front of it.

    Excellent explanation. So when you hear the name “2 phase scrubber” does that refer to the state of the fluids as you indicated?

      2 phase is referring to the gas and whatever liquids are dropping out of it. The liquid can be ngl, water, chemical etc

      A 2-phase separator or "srubber" generally refers to a vessel that separates out liquids from gasses. There are a ton of use cases.
