Should You Switch From Premiere Pro to DaVinci Resolve?

  • Emmy award winning editor, Brian Kissig explains advantages of using DaVinci Resolve over Premiere Pro as a primary video editing. Both programs are very powerful and industry standard, but Premiere Pro is better for editors who use After Effects consistently. DaVinci Resolve is better for newer filmmakers who are not ingrained in a certain software and want better color grading tools.

Great video but I don't agree with the after effects part. I've been using AE and Prmiere for over 5 years and switched to Resolve 2 years ago. I don't think Premiere has seamless integration with AE when you have to open up another program and it takes up so much ram and the cache in premiere is so fragile and it breaks so easily. I don't know what's more seamless, being able to click one button to open another page that's basically another program or click multiple buttons to open another program separately.
And speaking of Fusion, I think you don't know much about Fusion. Fusion actually has been around for longer and been used in VFX industry for decades and used in thousands of movies and TV shows, it used to cost a lot before BM bought it. The only advantage I'd say AE has over Fusion is that mograph is bit easier in AE and it's easier to get basic stuff done but you'll hit the ceiling very fast and then it would get unnecessarily complex where Fusion is built for professional grade VFX and has way more advanced tools and workflows for proper VFX. There are still many studios use Fusion but most use Nuke for compositing. AE is only good for mograph.

Thanks for the insight. You’re right I haven’t used fusion much. I do a lot of mograph work so my perception may be slightly skewed. I’ll definitely check it out more.

@@BrianKissig You can do a lot of mograph in Fusion as well. The HUDs in Avatar 1 was mostly made in Fusion. All the MotionVFX plugins for Resolve are basically Fusion macros.

For each 5 hours I spend in AE, I spend 1 in Premiere. Here, Premiere doesn't crash as often as I see people saying, perhaps he likes me too... I see people saying that Fusion is as good as AE, but I just can't find myself in that "node" (is it what it's called?) system. Right now I would take twice longer to do a simple edition in DaVinci than in Premiere. I'm too old to learn a new program...lol. I start mist of my projects in Photoshop. Then, I go to AE to animate the layers, add vfx and so on, but basically, I need to work on the layers independently... then, I go to Premiere just to finish and do the final edition. Would it be possible to do something similar in DaVinci? Can it replace Photoshop, Premiere and AE alone? And, how can I work with layers in Fusion? Is it possible?

I doubt that, for years I use PS and to this day I have heard many stories the PS killer and so on but nothing every replaced PS or came close, other applications can get the job done but not like PS can and I feel the same is true for resolve. However I wish there was a developer that can take the same things from both apps and made it more streamlined and simpler to do when I say simple, I mean less clicks. I feel adobe premiere has gotten easer to use from back in the days though :D just my 2 cents.

Big fan of DaVinci here! I did "editing" of my old family tapes using two VCRs, then eventually went digital with simple Movie Maker, but the last few years have been training myself on DaVinci. It definitely has its limitations for higher end projects, but it works great for me!

I can't vouch for premiere because i have not used it due to its price of course...i mean even when looking at premiere tutorials, the thing bothered me was the keyframe placement...comparing that to davinci resolve, the keyframe placement just makes more sense for me... I'm not sure about the performance issues of premiere because (i have not tried to use it) or the minimum requirements scared me, but with davinci, it really gives me that confidence more to just start editing and the way i can arrange my whole files in a project(music,fx,overlays) it's just so satisfying...and the fact that it's free, really motivated me to just try and learn at least the basic functions....now of course, this is just how the experience went for me. there were slight crashes but the fact that davinci has its backups perform well, that was a real life saver for me...

I was so excited to switch to DaVinci (from Premier) BUT then I learned that it doesn’t import ProResRAW natively 😢 sigh… why???!!! What a bummer
And yes, I’ve seen some options to import prRAW into Davinci but they’re not 100% accurate so they lose data

I think you said it best, adobe price is for all there tools back in the day as you know paying full price for ps and illustrator would pass the sub payment that's on today and now we get free updates with it id say its a very good deal with the gold standard of video editing. I used APP for a few years on and off before YT caught on and became mainstream but back then APP was a paint to use it was buggy but I haven't experience a crash in years since creative cloud came out, so i don't know why I keep hearing because of crashes is why people are changing, I don't find that a valid argument to make the switch to Resolve, I find that its a excuse people are making to go to resolve or to convince others to follow them. Me im staying with adobe premiere pro but i will also use Resolve to see just where it fits im my workflow if it don't ill just continue to use adobe premiere like always. Price should never be a option these days since people are making a living off of YT and have other streams of income beside how you expect software developers to bring you updates fast enough on the buy one time fix all. They got to make some money and even if its just a little bit its still a good thing like what adobe is doing. Great video for real and thanks for the information its valuable.

  • @reyvaz2951
    @reyvaz2951 ปีที่แล้ว

That sure clear some of the argument creater here and after that, there no reason to say one its better than the other and its free on resolve free version. Or you can keep giving your money away, just because someone dont't want to learn a new program.

I'm currently a Digital Cinematography major at Full Sail University and we are forced to use Premier Pro. I will admit that it has gotten better over the years but in my opinion, it doesn't compare to Davinci Resolve. I feel that Davinci Resolve, outside of Fusion, is more user friendly, faster, more efficient on computer resources and delivers a better editing experience overall (I did purchase the Studio version). There are just too many "clicks" that has to happen in Premier Pro to complete a simple task and the menus are not that great. Not to mention that the user will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, own any Adobe product due to the subscription model. That alone, for me, is enough to completely switch.

  • @MayaPosch

I have tinkered with Premiere Elements some, but when you can get DaVinci Resolve for less money (i.e. free), and DaVinci Resolve does not lock down the UI to appeal to mum & dad but accepts you as a power user (without a lot of money to spend on editing software, natch), then that seems like a no-brainer.
I do have some Adobe products, but all pre-cloud CS6 like Photoshop and Lightroom, with no interest in 'going CC'. For my admittedly more hobbyist uses this is a pretty good setup, and having the whole free DaVinci Resolve package to go with it is perfect.

I started editing in 1991 tape-to-tape and then learned Avid as an assistant editor, then Accom Stratasphere, the FCP ver. 2-7, then Premiere, then Autodesk Smoke, not Resolve. I first got interested in Resolve around 2011 as a color grader, then when they added editing capability in ver. 12.5 in 2014 I started using it to test. 4 years later in 2018, I left Premiere for good and only use it if the client requests it.
Resolve is like having AE, Audition, Speedgrade, and Media Encoder all in the same program … and it’s completely stable!
What impresses me the most is seeing just how much progress in just the last 9 years of me using it! They have shown clearly that they understand editors and will work very hard to provide a great editing experience!

It’s valid for sure, I did make the switch though at home at least from adobe to resolve, I haven’t looked back since. Also I think I personally like fusion more than AE nowadays, and I was in the adobe system for over 10 years. Fusions very feature rich, but I know nodes are intimidating to many for sure, but I’ve gotten very use to it being a VFX guy myself. All depends on personal taste and flow for sure

I definitely love Fusion over AE. When I started doing more 3D animations, I love that Fusion (unlike AE) doesn't require a plugin to export 3D camera tracker data into Blender. I just use the built in FBX exporter.
Aldi, I like not having to update Davinci Resolve, Fusion, Fairlight, and the render when an update comes out. I can just update one software. I also don't have to do round tripping to go from the editor to adding sfx. Fusion is just a tab over.

After Effects, it’s code and use intent has and will always be motion graphics… The layered approach works wonder here! As soon as you start talking about AE being more feature rich than Fusion, that is misinformation! Especially if you are talking about production involving anything 3D/CG.
Aces: AE = PLUGIN - FUSION = NATIVE
Exr support: AE = PLUGIN - FUSION = NATIVE
USD Support: AE= hahaha - FUSION = NATIVE
      3D INTEGRATION: AE = Element 3D - FUSION = Native
ROUND TRIP: AE = “Live Link” - Fusion = “switch tabs”
      Linear workflows…
1-Time purchase w/ free updates vs Creative Cloud Subscription..
      Playback Speed and Quality..
I could go on with other stuff like about AE and the creative cloud in general.. 100 softwares, still an important step like Color Grading is a side feature on a Panel of the NLE.
I personally don’t even use Fusion, but Nuke. I really don’t care which software or company creates what! What I do care is about process first and price second.. I would be more than happy to switch from Nuke to Fusion and save loads of money. But the tool is not there yet.
Choose based on what you need right now! If you don’t know what you need, don’t spend any money and go research what you need based on what you will want to do.
      AE is a subscription
Nuke is a more expensive subscription
Fusion is free or ~300$ forever(comes free with Resolve, both standalone or within Resolve)
Nuke is the Industry’s Tool of Choice!
Flame is another popular Industry Tool, but out of reach and with another different target audience.
Fusion is the indie/freelancer dream (often referred to as BabyNuke)
AE is for whoever needs something fast, probably works alone, probably not as involved in CG, or someone who has used it for 10+ years.

I Love the UI of Premiere Pro,
and the Keyframe look more Reasonable
& Understandable than in the Davinci Resolve.
But the Real Reason I move to Editing in Davinci Resolve
for 80%-90% of my works, because of the Reliability,
the Smoothness & Fastness that it can give me.
While the Premiere Pro always Lag & Crash to me so many time.
As a Dacade Experients of using Premiere Pro,
I don't want to Switch or Move the project to the new program.
But I waited for Adobe making the Premiere Pro
to be a Better Smooth Editing Program for Too Long,
And They Still Can't do it right.
Everytime I use Premiere Pro to edit, I always be Frustrated.
If Davinci Resolve was designed to look like Premiere Pro's UI,
Or Premiere Pro can run Fast & Smooth as Davinci Resolve did,
That would be the Greatest Day for Editing. Ha ha ha

Fusion is a free program with Resolve and it has nothing to envy to After effects, the difference is that there are those who say they don't like it because it is limited or they don't know how to work with node which is much easier than working in layers.

Enjoyed your video and to answer your question my favorite is FCP then Resolve and Premiere only if I am forced too. FCP works for me the way PPro works for you - the way I think and the software just gets out of my way and removes some of the redundant holdovers of old ways of editing still held onto in PPro and Resolve. I love Resolve. The features are absolutely amazing, but the editing experience is still not fluid nor as intuitive to me as FCP. I tend to use both FCP and Resolve together for certain projects. No tracks, role-based editing and magnetic timeline are my preference. Though BMs updates definitely make it difficult to stay with FCP. Yet when I work in Resolve it (other than the very amazing color and tracking tools) reminds me quickly of how I prefer so many little things FCP has that Resolve doesn't even down to a skimmer. Resolve isn't stable either. I'd love to have them combined if I could. It does get exhausting having to have so many 3rd party apps to do some things that are already in PPro and Resolve and yet some of the third party apps certain things better than the built-in version PPro and Resolve have. Can't have it all I guess...until Grant Petty catches up which clearly he's among to make Resolve do almost everything.
