- This is how I believe Steve Hacket plays his guitar part on this track from the Genesis album A Trick Of The Tail. The purpose of this video is to make it clear on how Steve performs on this track. I've seen many videos where guitarists play this in such a weird way, and I want to put an end to it.
Free PDF available through Google Drive folder: drive.google.c...

Steve Hackett is one of the most underrated guitarists in rock... his work is just sublime... ethereal, otherworldly and soulful... just utterly beautiful
One of the most beautiful songs ever written
I know
Only listening to the guitar part brings us the "Entangled" theme even closer to mind. Great. Thanks.
You’re very welcome, glad you enjoyed!
I discovered you by chance and I couldn't be happier!
Alan Freeman (i think on radio 1 or 2), played A trick ........live, in quadraphonic sound to promote its new release.Fell for this superb haunting tune .Tried playing a few versions of fingering but never happy .This is just so , so sweet. Could not help myself , had to sing along when the chorus started. Thank so much for sharing
Lasciatelo dire, fratello: sei un grande👍. Lavoro superbo che fa apprezzare ancora di più la magia di questo pezzo
Beautiful and very well done. Proving Steve is a genius.
Thanks! Feel free to also check out my guitar cover of Fountain Of Salmacis here: th-cam.com/video/clOowGtEKw0/w-d-xo.html
My favourite track on the album. Second is Mad Man Moon. My very favourite Genesis album.👍
In my ears, you`re spot on!
Just found this video... Awesome!
Maravilhoso. Parabéns. Assisti ao show do Stevie e, com sua guitarra um pouco mais alta, foi possível notar sua genialidade, presença e importância no Genesis.
That's awesome guitar 🎸 work bra!!! I've always loved acoustic guitar with exotic Old English medieval fingerstyle, Ian Anderson has got a great medieval fingerstyle guitar technique too, Jimmy Page and a lot of others in the acoustic rock sound. I'm gonna download this its so beautiful, so I can put it on to my mp3 Playlist via my headphones, off into another world of enchantment, away from the stressful kaotic real world 😄
So well done and I'm impressed, sincerely. Just came to hear this song done and now I;m subscribed.
Thank you very much! Wonderful playing
Thank you for this beautiful trascription!
Thanks for the careful transcribing and for posting the tab.
beautiful
Simply... Fantastic!!!!!!
Well done! Thank you!
Wonderfull !!!
Absolutely superb! Thanks.
great ...thanks for share
Terrific. Thanks.
Well done
Brilliant work.
This is great! Found this searching for an isolated guitar track from the original album (there was a channel, but it was shut down, sadly). I'd like to use this as part of the track of a cover to do this live with keyboards, I'd credit you of course.
Sure, I don't mind. Let me know what you need from me and I'll make it happen.
Dreamlike. Much like the theme of the song. Drifting away now…
Wonderful run-thru. Thx much for the video & tab; very helpful.
Bravissimo👍👍👍
Lovely. At the age of 67 I decided that I should learn to play something! A lifetime of Genesis music is all summed up in this tune. I'll need to watch this video over and over to learn it in sections...or is there a tab for this? Simply lovely!
No need to view this video over and over again to learn it - check in the description box of this video and you’ll see the free downloadable tab I wrote out for all three guitar parts!
@@GenesisPianoTranscriber Ah 'show more'. :). This great. I will print and put up on the stand and do wee bits at a time. We support creative arts and music and I wish to show the young people that age shouldn't be a barrier to learning. Life long learning! I have been a Genesis fan for most of my adult life (and all the now solo projects) and I'm loving all the work you have done - I have just stumbled across it! I have seen Steve Hackett playing the revisited stuff quite a few times now mostly in Scotland, but also in San Francisco a few years ago. Well done on this - I am in awe of your expertise!
@@JohnnyM959 Thanks for sharing! I've seen Steve and the always excellent Genesis cover band The Musical Box many times and it has always been a blast! Feel free to look around the other Google Drive links I have in the description box - you may find some very cool gems you've not heard before!
Also, forgot to mention this before. Here’s a link to the TH-cam video to hear all three guitar parts together: th-cam.com/video/W3HcjCeY8r8/w-d-xo.html
Some of the tab might be a bit different in the video, but the PDF has been corrected.
@@GenesisPianoTranscriber I'm so pleased I stumbled across your work - it is terrific and I'm enjoying exploring all the material - you are distracting me from my job ha ha! I have always loved the Genesis songbook...and now I can learn many little riffs that will make me happy! By the way I saw Genesis perform The Lamb in the Usher Hall in Edinburgh April 1975 (20 years old)..it was great, then they played Musical Box as the encore - blew me away!! What night! Thanks for all you do. Johnny.
Is it true that in the beggining (tresspass up until lamb or trick of the tail) they messed up with tunings for songs like musical box, cinema show, etc? If so, thank god they went standard for songs like this, or Ripples haha.
Great playthrough, AND BTW Lovely guitar!! I always wanted a semihollow/hollow but now all my money is destined to pedals and keyboards hahaha.
You’re absolutely right! I’m not entirely sure off the top of my head what odd open tunings they used for some songs, but you’re right, they did dabble with different guitar tubings. And thank you for the comment on my guitar, it looks and sounds equally beautiful!
Definitely yes! I did a tribute concert (Selling England by The Pound) some years ago and at least "Cinema Show" had a special 12-string tuning. Unfortunately I wasn't the one playing the 12-string, I must ask our guitarists for more info on that!
Keep in mind: those 3, just before and a bit after, "Abacab"...they nearly down. We were used to the other-demesionality that Gabriel gave.
I will say no more.
Nice job.. Nice guitar.. Steve would appreciate
Great job and a lovely sound :)
nice
This is amazing!! I'm learning this thanks to you but I can't get the MIDI linked there, I also checked your drive folder and is not there. Can you please upload it again?
Sorry about that! It has been updated, but here’s the link for your convenience! drive.google.com/drive/folders/18g9eKEglcXUxw3nvu9KZVWK5gDK8A3NS
@@GenesisPianoTranscriber thanks for that! 👏
way cool
Great stuff. My only thoughts would have been boosting the treble quite a bit more, to pick all those higher harmonics, and maybe have a little chorus rather than phase.
Perfeito
Again, so very nice & helpful; I’m getting there. Where did you find the backing track, please? Thx.
I made the backing track myself but I never put it in the description box for whatever reason haha. I’ll link it in there soon.

TheBeatlesAbbeyRoadPerformer Thank you much, very kind.
@@GenesisPianoTranscriber Here’s my attempt. I so much appreciate the help you gave me with tabs & the backing track. th-cam.com/video/DlPvBDpIg8M/w-d-xo.html
@@polygraphovich whoa that was excellent! I’m very happy that the video and tab sheet helped you learn this beautiful song!
STEVE PLEASE BELIEVE US YOU ARE THE BEST EVER GOD BLESS MATE ❤❤😂
what guitar effect did you use for this love it...
@@kuau714 Slow phaser with delay
Excellent work. Standard tuning?
Thank you. And yes, this is in standard tuning - no funny business with the tuning pegs on this one.
Chingona rola.
that little modulation, is it phaser?
Yes. Very slightly. The phaser effect should not totally mask the notes coming out of the guitar. There’s also a phaser effect on my Cuckoo Cocoon cover - be sure to check that out as well!
A simple question: do you have the scores or have you managed to find chords and melody by ear?
I just discovered your channel. Excellent!
Hey Alexx, figured this one out by ear. Here's one of my other videos that shows the score for all three guitars and bass pedals for this piece. If you take a look in the description box, you'll find a link that directs you to the full PDF on my Google Drive: th-cam.com/video/W3HcjCeY8r8/w-d-xo.html
Can’t see your face....is that you Steve haha
