Top moment of this blowout is when Palmer slips at 1:34:25 and terms ballpark "the homerdome." This leads into a discussion of air-conditioning in the building & its effect upon power hitting. According to the losing manager, re '87 WS, when Twins were at the plate the Metrodome's AC was silent, when Cards were in the box it was blowing full blast.

57:15 - I'm surprised Mccarver doesn't know the balk rule for left-handed pitchers. It's not the leg that cannot cross the rubber but the foot.

Al Michaels and Tim McCarver were such putz's. Their arrogance and derision towards the Twins, the Dome, and Minnesota weren't even slightly hidden. Michaels was even busted on the raw satellite feed ripping the city of Minneapolis on mic during an ad break between innings (Jim Palmer was a contrast in class.) Winning is the best revenge...

Twinkies were an 85 win team that couldn't win outside of their own building. They wouldve finished 5th in the AL east that year.
And the Metrodome itself was a god awful place, just like two big middle fingers in the faces of baseball fans everywhere.
So the criticisms were well deserved.

7th throw to first in a row at 58:18. Starting next year that would not be allowed- on the third pickoff throw, the runner would be automatically awarded a base. If there are runners on second and/or third, the run would be forced home and/or to third base.

Modern baseball has been manipulated and reconfigured by Rob Manfred and not for the better. Viola would have been pulled out much earlier in this start too in today’s game even with the big lead because managers just feel like they have to use the bullpen. Strange and sad but true

And truth is seeing how amazing this combination was-Michaels, McCarver, and Palmer-might explain a bit of why McCarver made some enemies in later years with people thinking he tried to say and do too much. Maybe he was trying to duplicate what he had with Michaels and Palmer, and felt like he had to work too hard to compensate for the fact that he just never had partners after this who he could play off of the way he played off these two guys.

It's funny how almost every time the Cards have a visit to the mound, they play the march of the empire music from Star wars. At the end of game 7 you can barely hear the Star Wars theme music playing as the Twins celebrate on the field.

Critics had a field day with this series - two teams thought to not be that great, playing in a dome, neither team well known outside its' home market, a lot of blowout games, etc. I remember one magazine called it an embarrassment to baseball that a "fifth-place caliber team" (Twins) was in the World Series. But that's sports for you.

interesting point. Things would change after this.
cause then from 1987-2001, there were only 5 different teams representing the American League in the World Series.
    Yankees (4-1)
    Blue Jays (2-0)
    Twins (2-0)
    A's (1-2)
    Indians (0-2)

What they're referencing actually went to 8 in a row. From 81-88, the AL champions were Yankees, Brewers, Orioles, Tigers, Royals, Red Sox, Twins, Athletics.
Also, since he was comparing it to NFL... from 87-01 in NFL, the Broncos and BIlls also went 4 times each from 87-91. NFL's parity is largely a myth though. Especially in the AFC, where it's been almost all Patriots for a current college student's entire lifetime.

he batted behind some excellent hitters, and at sixth in the order he could find himself leading off innings pretty often, so the solo shots are a good possibility.. The Twins also seemed to go off all at once a lot that year, which robbed him of some RBI.
