The Death of GW2: Fact and Fiction

- GW2 is a hot topic again because of the recent leaked news from a shareholders meeting, ultimately it is nothing we didnt already know or suspect for years now, ideally ANET will come out and give the players a peek behind the curtain, however it is not /the end/ like everyone is thinking or worrying about. You can log into GW1 right now and play it, and after the inevitable GW3 it will be the same with GW2. Personally i am excited for the concept, thought it will likely not even be a remote possibility until 2030+ so there is plenty of GW2 still to enjoy.
Dont doom, its alright.

My big worry is that too early of an announcement and too little info will kill the franchise before a sequel can launch.
If people are convinced that a new game is soon (tm) they will be more hesitant to spend time or money on a game that will be outdated/replaced
An announcement of what will carry over would give a strong incentive to people to continue investing depending on what is being carried over.
Hall of monuments was novel, fantastic even. But guild wars 1 did not have legendaries or anywhere near as extensive of a cash shop as guild wars 2 does and people have invested a lot of time and money into those with the expectation of a long return.
Even possibly putting into question if those investments are worth it anymore is not a good thing in any way.
Imho, the best thing Anet can do at this point is announce if/when they release GW3 that GW2 account cosmetics will be available in it. Basically anything that is either legendary or bought from gems.
You really have no clue what you're talking about my dude.
@@AzureRoxe why so? What's the counter argument here?
Strip it apart, why and how is anything I said not possibly correct or a bad take (in the case of opinions)?
@@AzureRoxe "yOU HaVe No iDeA wHaT u R tAlKiNg aBoUt"
@@corinitahtn There is none. People just like to play at being contrarian when they don't know how to dispute something they don't agree with.
It's clear to me that this announcement was too premature and they still need to decide things if they want to come forth with an official announcement. There has been a few new employees working on porting visual effects and models from GW2's engine into Unreal Engine, so I think we'll see some if not all legendary skins, as well as a few gemstore skins return in Hall of Monuments 2.0, and it all depends on how they wanna treat it.
If they dont announce soon that tons of legendaries and skins will carry over into GW3, I cant see myself spending much more time or money in GW2.
Eh, hopefully they do a hall of monuments type thing but who knows, honestly the game is fun and realistically quitting now because there might be a new game in the future seems like a bad take, why not quit now anyways because there will /eventually/ be a game that people move to.
Skins I get but lengendaries aswell ? I hope not no newbie would come to GW3 if the old school off the bat were rocking legies
Please no.... one of the reason why I quit Gw2 is cause everyone there looks like a Christmas tree. I want Gw1 artstyle, more realistic and less flashy.
I have dozen of legendaries in GW2 but I don't want it carried over in GW3. I mean whats the sense of playing new game if I already have the good stuff there? I have nothing to do and people will complain again theres no content anymore. And how will you attract new players with that?
just the skins from earned legys is enough
The low retention of Anet employees is the most telling, least surprising, part of the video. Old game engines make creating new things more challenging, and not having a group of experienced, directed employees really shows in game. I watched the "Welcome to the Studio" Anet video on their website, and out of the whole video I only saw mid-young 20 somethings on the floor. That's not an insult to them. It's just surreal not seeing older employees. Not having expertise with the software or direction that comes from age really shows.
Yeah it's like it's everyone's "first time" which is why we see the same mistakes being repeated. It's okay, the game is okay, but it could be excellent, however as an employee spending a significant amount of time learning on and developing on old tech doesn't really do much for the resume. So they get enough job experience to move on to a different studio with more modern tech.
@@SilhouetteGaming1 GW2 is a game you get your foot in the industry door then move on to greener pastures. Potential is a word that, in my humble opinion, describes GW2 to the T. When you're young potential is a compliment. When you're older potential is used to point out your missed opportunities, failures. GW2 has always had potential, but now that potential is too charged. If GW3 releases I'll give it a shot. The slack I'll give it will be minimal if any. Hopefully things turn around for Anet.
@SomeGuy-uc2pg ill play it if I have fun with it, it's okay if others don't, I personally don't like tomato's or pickles but I think it's okay if others do. We will see if it's worth checking out when we get more info in like 5 years. The real stress is releasing too much info before it's ready or giving artificial deadlines to release like cyberpunk did with a janky mess
Good video, unnecessary clickbait title though.
I'm sorry :(
@@SilhouetteGaming1i know why you chose the title but also for your channel growth such titles or messages are not very good…
I would recommend to change it to something more positive in your own interest. But its your decision ofc and dont mind me 😊
@@Cross_111the clickbait titles work and every data reflect that. But the only issue is the context, in this small game and its viewers it dont go well with people. People are just dumb and form opinions about someone from the titles.

It's the opposite, negative titles do better. People don't care about games doing good, but about drama and negativity. The title also fits pretty well here
I embrace gw3. We're going to have a great time still enjoying this game while waiting for the sequel.
I'll definitely still be playing!
And keep enjoying GW2 when you realize the sequel is a mobile gacha game.
The gw2 cult is on fire and i love it.
The comment sections under all the gw3 videos are so entertaining to read through.
Like yeah sure guys they just reskin gw2 and give you all your legendaries and gemstore purchases, so we can maintain the exact same playerbase and dont get any new ones.
I'm very excited about gw3, been waiting for that anouncement. I hope UE5 gives them the tools to create something even better than we have now.
Yeah I think maybe a hall of monuments 2, but none of the legendaries or skins are gonna get ported, nor do I think they should. Why do I want to play a game I've already done everything in?
you nailed it. These people are fcking pathetic.
But... but... but... Post-Processing options!
They just started, we will not see anything for years. Since new year there are some leaks of attempts to convert GW2 assets into UE5 and with amount of assets in GW2 it will take time and build new tools for that conversion. Just lot of panic for obvious expected news.
"NOOOOO MY GEMSTORE PURCHASES ARE NOW FORFEIT I HAVE WASTED ALL THIS TIME PLAYING THIS GAME" - the gw2 subreddit
meanwhile, I, guild wars 1 veteran since 2006 and still playing that game, am laughing histerically
Change is good, I applaud ANet's choice to do a GW 3
100% agree. I only wish we hadn't discovered it this way, but with a peek at what it could do better than what we have now...well, it is what it is
Great thoughts, totally agree.
Thanks for just speaking your mind on the subject and not turning the whole video into a negative pile of sludge.
I've come across too many of those types of vids lately, so this one is a breath of fresh air.
Thanks! Yeah I can disagree with decisions or a game and still enjoy playing it.
Havent been playing since EoD.. love the "gear grinding" factor for character progress just so i can solo some hard stuff.. and end up with "balance patch".. not everyone have someone to play with tho..
I enjoy the game we have now, but it's been a bit stagnant since SOTO release and the broken content (All the CMs when they came out) has made my interest fade slightly. The soft announcement of GW3 gives me some slight hope they'll do things better with a new engine, but only time will tell.
I am excited for the future of Tyria, and GW3! I would like to see more positivity for the future game’s possibilities as opposed to people hanging on like the game is going to disappear over night. GW2 is amazing, the have innovated on many concepts and with a new engine could continue to expand our gaming possibilities.
Agree with your opinion here. They need to have started GW3. It will probably take a few years even with AI helping compress dev time. I think the systems, storytelling and ethos of a et deserve to be carried forward on newer platforms.
Your videos are a nice change from the typical overly positive GW2 TH-camrs that are over the top family friendly.
Thanks. I love the game and try to enjoy it but let's be honest atleast. The game has its problems otherwise nobody would ever quit and the game would be top population. It still is good and worth playing but just be real. Negativity isn't a good way to gain popularity but it's hard to argue with facts.
I can't agree more. People usually go so defensive on critics I really love your take, which I found similar to WP. Keep it up till whatever end 😊
Yeah those are paid off even though they claim otherwise they are so full of s*** and they get so defensive and it's obvious why. To be fair they are just kids to it's to have their parents didn't teach them to be stronger.
I'll play GW2 like hell and enjoying every moment of it, then if GW3 comes I'll move to play it. If its not developed/gets cancelled then I'll still play GW2. Stop worrying tomorrow, enjoy your playing today. I've spend money in GW2 and I'll keep spending, better than going to movies.
great take. GW2 continues to be my favorite MMO. And I agree with you on all points.
Its importanf to say GW2 at present is doing fune, it is not dying a death right now
RIP GW2 2012-2024
Can't wait for gw3 🤩
I hate to be negative, but if you read the question posed by the shareholder, they were asking why NCsoft west (i.e., anet) is in a deficit. This means, whether gw2 players like it or not, that gw2 isn't profitable enough. GW3, whatever kind of game it is going to be (if it is even going to release, look at what happened to riot's MMO that got canned years into development), isn't likely going have as "consumer friendly" of a cash shop as the 2nd does currently.
You have become my favorite GW content creator
Thanks man! I'm just trying to be real. I love the game, but can we atleast be honest?
I have around 500 h in GW 2. The best mmo I have ever played. The only 2 complains I have about Anet and the game are nr 1: marketing and nr 2: the easy mount acces. I think Anet is the best mmo developer out there, but at the same time the baddest at marketing. Anet made the best mount system from all games, but at the same time now days they give acces to them too easy. I think mounts should be the pinnacle of end game movement, like really late game. They could be the only vertical progression in the game, the mechanic that tides everything togheter. Unlocking them to early, especially the flying ones, takes from the old experience that players had back in the day. I played the base game, without any expansion, for 50 h. One of the best experiences. Then I got the raptor trial, and it was a blast. But I can't stop to wonder, how cool was the progression in HoT without mounts. How cool was the feeling when you unlocked glider, and speed mushrooms. Giving skyscale in SotO to new players takes some of the best experiences in the game.
I agree with you. This feels kind of like it could be how D&D developed--AD&D was a great game, and though it had a lot of improvements with 2e (except THAC0. May it ever rest in not-peace), the way it clung to leveling and build systems didn't make it amazingly intuitive. But 3.5e? Brilliant in how it sped-up leveling and offered enhanced customization.
Feeling hopeful that, if GW3 ends up dropping in the next decade or so, it'll hit that 3.5e goodness.
I Rather have a kind of a realm reborn with GW2 than a diferent setting be it in the future, past, or whatever.
Continuity.
The virtues of GW2 are a luxury in the MMORPG genre, there is literally nothing like GW2 out there. And the only thing a GW3 would do is to fight over itself for players.
Yeah the thing is with a modern mmo you get modern pricing structures and expectations. It would be a shame to see this monetization style die.
I have zero problem with GW3 coming, and will play it if it is good regardless, but hope they have some sort of significant Hall of Monuments type reward for those of us that have put a lot of time into GW2. I was hoping they would move the game over to UE5 for the tenth anniversary - same as I was for SWTOR - but the move is inevitable if they want to complete with Ashes of Creation and other MMOs that will be based off of it soon.
True, like eventually new tech has to happen- that's what led to GW1s downfall, but the skills/trait bloat and other system bloat also made GW1 a development nightmare. Hopefully a sustainable solution can be reached for GW3 when/if it released sometime in the 2030s
Exactly. Gw2 is doing great, but the engine and the 10 years of content you have to work around surely block a lot of new cool ideas. I just hope gw3 delivers well on release.
GW1 players moved to New World? i didnt know New World released in 2012 instead of 2021 xDD
Meant second life rip. Sorry it's been 20 years
Dude, this community is just something else. We don't need better graphics, we don't need better engine, give me all my legendaries and drip in GW3.
Jesus Christ it's not 2012 anymore, technology moves forward and so do new generations. If anet wants to stay relevant they need to upgrade instead of beating this dead horse, whether we like it or not.
Problem is that GW3 is probably still 5+ years away and yet they already kind of spoiled it and made sure that so many vets are now hesitant to spend too much time and money in GW2, not knowing what or if anything at all will carry over to the new game.
It's like spoiling the ending of a TV show, it doesnt take away from the great acting or scenes but it just makes you less likely to watch all the way through because you already know where the story is going.
Really terrible marketing move on Anets part. Hard to get excited for a new dlc that they announce soon, when we already know that most of their focus is already on GW3 and we get a hard reset in a few years.
I know rigth , people keep saying GW2 is fine and they dont need GW3 . At least Anet has the balls to go for a gw3 with all of the knowledge of the things that did work well in GW2 and nuking the things that are wrong with the game.
Maybe they didnt want the news to come out like this , but just ride the wave and start talking about their vision and evolve the concept.
I’m very excited about GW3 and I will continue playing GW2 until the new game is released.
Yes sir! Me too.
Finally a reasonable take
Why would you be excited about a mobile gacha game?
I’m hoping that Anet can succeed in keeping the best parts of GW2, while also being able to bring some new ideas into the franchise. I would love it if they could allow us to migrate a few of our existing characters and gear to the new game, but that’s a big ask. There’s so much good in GW2, I would hate to see Anet waste development time by starting over again from scratch with a new game. At least they should honor the two existing games by continuing with the same lore and history, as well as the same map of the world.
With a clean slate they can do a lot of different things, but we will see what news comes out. It's safe to say we will be rocking GW2 for many years to come regardless of if Anet plans on developing a successor or not.
I just hope it doesn't lag. The game already looks good enough at 1440p
I got bored of GW2 kill dragons plot long ago. I am REALLY freaking hyped to see the future of GW and GW3 like gw2 blew me away compared to 1 now if the third one blows me away just as much if even more so then ill be a happy person. Also if any GW2 dev's are here thanks for the moth skyscale mount. I still want my fluffy bumblebee mount that hovers like the hummingbird.
we're getting gw3 before wvw alliances
I really have a strong feeling that gw3 will start to be more of ff14 style of microtransactions and/or monthly subscriptions. I don’t know why but with all the games that are coming out like that, it’s has a high chance of becoming true. Only reason why “WHALES” are not playing gw2 is because of the horizontal progression that’s built in with the game. And if anet wants to make big bucks(which every company does) they would start to bring in microtransactions. I just hope I’m wrong
honestly if they make gw3 ill just drop guild wars alltogether. I feel like they would just gimp gw2 to make gw3, do they expect us to grind everything again? They should just port gw2 to a new engine instead.
It would be exactly like the transition from GW1 to GW2. You can still play GW1.
Unfortunately i highly doubt that…
But thats the exact reason why this sort of leak is dramatic for anet
This hurts their current game like hell
Regardless i will play gw3 (IF it comes out…)
Until then i will continue to play gw2 like i have until a decade now ^^
And if they dont drop regular updates to gw2 anymore then i will just move on to other games or real life and return from time to time because its a game i love
How could they f*** up that bad…
But at LEAST it WILL force anet to give a statement now which is good for us 😊
Lets wait and see 😊
@@CarnaghSidhe why should i play a game thats on life support by the devs? Thats what gw3 means, but if they think they can find enough people to play it then all good for them.
I'm hoping it's just GW2 with a new engine, kind of like what Counterstrike 2 did.
@@CarnaghSidhe Yes you can, but why play a game where some (if not the most) of the content relies on mass grouping? World Bosses, Events, Dungeons, Raids, PvP, WvW, Map Events: without the Massively Multiplayer part, GW2 is dead, and you can't play it like you can GW1.
Question remains: will they cancel this faster than their Dune project?
TBD lol
Cancel or not the one thing for sure is that GW2 is dying and the company (Arenanet) might go bankrupt.
Mi opinion is that arenanet has learn nothing , through all this year's , their attitude it's if does not work it's left behind, they did this with dungeons, fractals, strikes and Raids, instead of fixing the problem they just left behind and never look back ,with this attitude I have no hope for GW3 , if they can't do GW2 better now why GW3 is gonna be better??
The only logical reason for the studio to jump for GW3 it's bicose it's going to bee a subscription based game
I have no hipe or hope for GW3
All this year's all they give to their community was 90% boring stories nobody cares about and 10% new maps ,2new fractals and 2 raid bosses
If its the same writing, Im moving on to other franchise.
To be honest, I realized I'm getting too old for MMOs in general and maybe retire to a more casual, and social MMO. Like a retirement home MMO.
But for now, I'll just play whatever GW2 has.
I'm in the same boat to be honest lol
I dig the vid.
It's over, bros. Doomers won.
Doomers? Since when do doomers WANT a sequel?
@@AzureRoxe Doomers don't create problems. They just embellish them.
Despite the avatar I actually love GW2.
we can just.. you know, keep playing and also play gw3 when it comes lol why all the doom when the news basically says guild wars is their main attention for both gw2 expac and gw3 in the future
That's basically what I said
@@SilhouetteGaming1 you are right! was talkin to this "im done playing x999" folks
It might not even be an mmo. They might just keep gw2 as the mmo and be working on a major rerelease of it.
What if gw3 was set 100-200 years in the future and jade and asura tech have taken over and now Tyria is a cyperpunk society and it is an fps.
If they want to have a live service game, MMO is still a great way to offer that, some single player game is not providing the long term financial security and would require constant new titles for fresh income.
Also, I hope they realize that most MMO players want the high fantasy medieval style.
Best example of why Wildstar with its futuristic approach failed hilariously and why for example engineer in GW2 is the least played class.
Lay off the drugs.
If GW3 is really in the works it's going to be in the oven for another 5 or 6 years probably. So no worries.
Definitely no reason to doom right now, nor in 5 years, I am looking forward to whatever is next.
I'm on board if the idea is to upgrade GW2 to a modern graphics (that I don't care about tbh) AND keep ALL content & progression from GW2. if not I'm not even gonna bother checking out. This is the main reason why the WoW community split into classic(s) & retail - ppl on classic servers hate constant changes that come with expansions completely turning away from systems & content that were relevant up to then.
I have a problem with this kinds of announcements. Can I play it now? NO. We might do this but we don't know when. Ok I am not interested, please don't hype me up for no reason. Look at ashes of creation for example. It's been years now, and they released so much content and stuff I am so tired of it, I probably won't even try the game now.
Great so all the money and time gettimg all the cool stuff for nothing. Thats cool....
Don't worry about losing gw2 gamers, its anets only money source for the most part. Gw3 if its even happening is years away from completion. no worries here
That's ultimately my sentiments too, I'm not worried about it, I just hope the next game is also something I can enjoy.
As long as NCsoft exists, Guild Wars 3 release will be a disaster. Maybe it's GW3 mobile, we all will laugh if that is the case.
Why do gamers forget that the most important thing in an MMO is not the graphics, but rather the system?
If the graphics are high, we will turn it off anyway, same as Black Desert players do in crowded areas or cities. Where did their graphic advantage go? evaporated 🤣?
The legend says a good MMO doesn't always have good graphics 😂.
Just look at NC's recent MMO Throne and Liberty, that game is not played much even in its home country Korea.
Unless GW3 is just a remake and all progresses are transferred over (similar to Counter-Strike 2), there is zero chance it can compete with the current WoW and FF14, which both have years of content and loyal playerbase.
This is pure copium lmao. As time moves on and new generations grow up, we gonna need games that are up to date with technology they know. I'm not saying a game needs to be photorealistic, but bunch of blurry textures from 2004 engine simply won't do. Honestly graphics like these in Witcher 3 would be perfect, a nice mix of realism and artistic flavor.
Dude Black Desert has a godawful game engine. The graphics suck because it runs like dogsh*t, which is why you have to turn them down.
If you have beautiful graphics that run well, then you have a good game engine.
UE5 is capable of that but so far most MMOs still either use UE3 or UE4 with upgrade to parts of UE5, which is still very unoptimized and runs poorly, hence ppl have to play on lower settings, which means the game has bad graphics.
A game fully created in UE5 will have massive potential, not just in graphics but also in terms of proc gen environments, full open world, AI, physics etc etc.
NCSoft existed for the release of GW1 and 2 and every single bit of content they ever got.
Are people like you braindead?
@@MyN0N4M3 Did you just moronically say Black Desert's graphics suck and run badly? Are you stuck in the game's launch?
Gw3 would be wonderful. The current Gw2 is an absolute mess, from it's philosophy of never looking back to old content (dungeons) to its current abysmal storytelling.
What wrong with the stroytelling
I personally doubt GW3 will become a thing, GW2 is doing well enough right now, keeping up GW1 alongside GW2 is making them nice money for not too much effort considering a pair of pants is enough to get a good chunk of people spending money. I'd say GW2's end will mark the end for Guild Wars.
People gunning for GW3 don't remember - or don't know - how GW1 was pretty much abruptly dropped and shoveled into the background once GW2 was announced and GW2 itself had a rough start.
Early GW2 wasn't what we remember it as today, I didn't really bother giving GW2 a go until after HoT and just stuck with GW1 due to all the rant I heard from friends over Skype and TS how the game is "Guild Warriors" or they have to reroll to Warr/Ele/Mesmer, because their Ranger/Necro are not wanted on top of the "there's nothing to do" not even 6 months after the release.
gw2 is not doing good, the question the shareholders asked was why is not ncwest (anet) canned if its not profitable and he was forced to answer with gw3
Guild Wars 1 was just a better game, truly unique from the way access to the underworld and fissure were linked to success in the Hall of Hero's to the highly customizable characters and vast variety of PvP. Guild Wars 2 is a fine game, but it never felt like Guild Wars to me. It went from being this incredibly unique entry into the mmorpg genre to just another generic mmo in my opinion. I'm amazed how many core systems that made Guild Wars 1 so special are just absent in Guild Wars 2. If Guild Wars 3 is more like Guild Wars 1, but uses a modern smoother combat system loke gw2, and is built on a modern engine , I don't think there would be any reason to play any other mmorpg
Yeap leak this early can cause uncontrolable hype and expectation.Because of content skimplation many people including me already looking to Gw3 and laying my expectations for Gw 3.Many Gw 2 fans hate this idea but this is the best route for pour life into franchise since Gw2 is hoobled with missmanagement and dead contents also ruined by 10 years of alt accounts grind. They had to reshape old contents like dungeons, raids ,bring good contents like housing and challenge tower. And must bring exclusive rewards for challengin conrents so people can show off.
The sequel better have a fucking weather system or I refuse to even touch it this time around. The static weather of GW2 has been my most hated thing for so long and these lazy devs refuse to add anything...
if gw3 does come out as long as i can keep my legendarys im good, since real money went into them
Same
I want Apple to give me iPhone 14 for free since I've paid real money for iPhone 13.
Only fools pay real money for digital items in a fantasy world. You might as well just flush your money down the toilet and get enjoyment from watching it go in circles before it disappears.
I would love them to add all current legendaries in GW3 with updated GW3 graphics.
And if you already had them in GW2 you would already get like 25-50% of the progress towards that legendary in GW3.
Would be a decent enough compromise in my book.
@@MyN0N4M3 Yeah, if any developer wants to convince the existing players to migrate to the new follow up game, they should allow players to migrate their characters and gear to the new game. Otherwise, a certain percentage of players will just keep playing the game that they have invested so much time and effort (and for some players, real money). This is assuming that GW3 is going to be an MMORPG and have similar mechanics, features, and combat, as GW2 has now. If Anet is smart, they will think twice before making GW3 as complicated and hard to balance, as GW2 is.
gw3 is a mistake mmorpg players dont worship graphical fidelity
And the newer maps in Guild Wars 2 are still really beautiful. People just like to look at the core maps and unfairly compare them with single player games like Cyberpunk 2077.
its not just graphics. UR engine means it'll be easier to bring in new talent
Copium. Mmo players simply don't have any decently looking titles to play, it's not that they don't want them. Learn the difference between corelation and causation.
Yeah most MMO players looking for a fair pricing model or no sub fee have like dogshit vs turd sandwich to choose from in terms of visuals. It would be nice to see something that atleast pushes modern rigs a little bit outside of this jank CPU optimization.
