I’d really like to have part of the deep dive as a retrospective - go back to last week’s forecast and see how accurate it was and if/why it was different etc.
Forecasters never do that because it would then be obvious how inaccurate they usually are! Similarly all the waffle and repetition so that we fall asleep before they get to any point...
Hi Alex I really enjoy the deep dives that you guys at the Met Office put on. I've been watching them since the start. Learning a bit more about the weather it's very interesting. You all do a great job, all the best, Stevie from Eaglesham Scotland
I will make a motorbike trip to the west coast of Ireland over Thursday to Saturday and so these Deep Dives are brilliant for helping me plan what to wear to stay warm and dry. Thank you!
This has to be the best deep dive so far just to be able to see the changes throughout the country in summer and August 🎉 The fern effect was very interesting to learn about . Great stuff thank you Alex . Yes August was incredibly hot and dry in Norfolk , sunshine too . DD has to be to most interesting viewing on TH-cam . 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Great to see that new 3d rainfall accumulation graphic in use again! Very interesting info on the 'cut of low' scenario......does this slowly drift east into Europe as time goes by or just slowly fill in situ or even deepen? I guess there is no certainty in this scenario? Excellent deep dive Alex....thankyou for your enthusiasm.
One of the things that I would like to see is a brief overview of the weather in neighbouring countries. In the summer, the countries across the channel and around the med so we might see what we will get if we were to go on holiday there. Similarly in winter, need to know if we can get to the good ski locations (not me - too old now anyway). But getting a bigger picture of where the weather is, where it comes from, how it will affect us...or having affected us, how it will affect neighbouring countries where we might have friends and relations
Drawing is back! And loads of stats, thanks for showing Alex. It is very interesting to see these regional contrasts. And surely general warming trend is clear, that was a very good insight to see how average temperatures go up since 1970s...
Loving the overall Summer deep dive, great breakdown of the last 3 months! 👍 Something I can't quite grasp is how it appears that how our insect population numbers appear reduced this year, on recent years, even though average temperatures were still higher than historical averages but weren't significantly higher? Thanks again for the great info! 👍👍
MetOffice , This Deep Dive Weather Reporting truly makes the brain tingle … If I was a weather person this would be the way I would hope present it … I really liked the rainfall histogram too , thx , kev
Hi Alex, good deep dive again sorry about the weatherman's woe, wasn't there one last year near Canada that affected our weather, August has always been temperamental over the year's, liked your drawings enjoy your week thanks
Hi Alex and watching from New Zealand… What a brilliant deep dive and highlights the UK weather brilliantly with the graphics and your layman terms explanations! Hope autumn is kind in the UK as we begin spring quite warmly in parts of NZ… keep up the great work! Richard, NZ
As we are an 'island' (inset discussion here) I'd love to see more about the sea/ocean temperatures and how these are affected and even if they affect the weather in the UK.
Very many thanks Alex. So, here in the New Forest, having a few days break you’re telling us we’re going to have a Cut-off Low from tomorrow night and will be having a yellow warning! 😮 Still, at least it won’t start until tomorrow night…that’s right..isn’t it? It was really interesting to hear about the summer stats also the Fern effect, brilliant. Many thanks to Angel and Simon! ❤ Thanks again Alex and all the Me Take very great care everyone
Absolutely brilliant - thank you so much for these deep dives! They really put flesh on the bones of the shorter, more usual weather programmes, and answer a lot of the questions I have about the statistics and how typical the season has been. I am also grateful for all the technology you use to illustrate the story, because I've always thought that presenting weather was like telling a story, only before it has happened. So much here to think about, and so well illustrated. I do find this kind of programme fascinating... 🙂
Great forecast and deep dive as always. Would love to see a look at the weather in the Atlantic and the US at the moment to see what is happening with the tropics and how that might influence our weather into September and October this year.
The Deep Dive is always good. Cloud appreciation day is a great idea - As i work outside every day I find just looking at the clouds a very restful escape from the daily hurly burly. What I would like an explanation on is why is it on some days it is possible to see Jet Contrails but then on other days it is not possible to see them. On some days you can see many at the same time. I presume it is to do with the pressure situation in the atmosphere at 30,000 plus feet. If the air is rising contrails are visible or is there another explanation?
Autumnal here in this part of US this wk, last yr this time it was 97 deg Fahrenheit for 1st couple wks Sept. Thanks as always for this great discussion on the Deep Dive; we look forward to it!🎉
Thanks , Alex ,Angel and crew . So far this year thunderstorms seem to have by-passed Surrey , back in July I thought I heard some distant thunder , ( Brontide ? ) , but who knows maybe Summer will depart with a bang for us in the coming days . Loving the Deep dive . Always a pleasure to watch .
my experience in Aberdeen is that every 3-5 yrs we get almost constant cloud cover from spring to autumn, as a result i wonder if global warming and pollution produces more cloud cover generally. most excellent postings deuudes!
Currently, in the South, there are "Yellow extreme weather alerts for moderate rain". MODERATE RAIN? In England? We shouldn't be batting an eyelid, let alone getting a severe weather alert. On the weekend there were thunderstorm warnings and not a dark cloud forecast (and not a single storm in my area- something that happens more and more rarely in SW edge of London- I miss them big storms!). It's getting rather hard to take these weather warnings seriously...
Whilst we have not had any outstanding warmth this summer I get the impression from my own observations that there is a more clear indication of warming of the atmosphere reflected in the nighttime minimum temperatures. These seem to be consistently higher than a few years ago, but such a trend would not be reflected in the average temperatures if the maximum temperature was suppressed, as appears to be the case this summer. Here in North Devon we are consistently seeing minimums in the mid to higher teens, which 20 or 30 years ago would have been almost unheard of, and whilst living in Mid Wales until a few years ago I came to the same conclusion. Perhaps this is something that could be looked at in a future deep dive.
“Rambling” - I don’t think so! Alex has to be one of the best educators around - such a natural. Without doubt one of my ‘highlight’ watches of the week. Many thanks.
Really interesting as always. Could you also do more on global weather too? Not every time but whenever there are significant events eg Mediterranean storms, typhoons etc as all connected globally. Thanks!!
Howdy Met team and Alex, great look over the Summer period, funny thing is I didn't think it was that much cooler or wetter or even windier and I'm in the West of Scotland, the ground was fairly dry for most of it, maybe it was a drier spring and that's why I didn't notice. Anyway, a thought for something to discuss in the future, as we go into the stormier months, it would be nice to hear a discussion over the different warning levels, the possible effects and precautions people should take, particularly around activities like work and travel. I noticed that a lot of weather warnings would go out and people just don't know what to do, they feel they have to go into work and get stuck there or on the roads. Same with travelling around, people just don't know what to do with the warnings even when they are given and there are no legal protections saying if there's an amber warning for wind and rain that they can stay home and safe. I think that's why so many folk ignore them because they don't know what to do with the warnings. Hopefully you get what I'm trying to say, thanks for the show and look forward to the 10 day trend tomorrow.
Love the Met Office YT videos. In particular, your graphics! There is always something new to learn each week. I watch them all! Climate and weather is so fascinating, and you all present them so well. If they had been available 40 years ago, I may have chosen meteorology, instead of nursing! Thank you Met Office!
What are the Britons going to do when The AMOC shuts down within the next 25 years? I'm British by the way and I lived in Exeter, Devon in 2011. emigrated to Western Canada with my parents 45 years ago when I was 15.
Seeing the cut-off low centred on the Bay of Biscay made me wonder if that is how the Doldrums came about, where sailing ships were historically becalmed for days?
Really enjoy these Deep Dives.Although I tend to watch them at the weekend rather than on Tuesday, these videos are most educational.Doesn't matter how long they are, I find they fly by.As a suggestion for the future,is it possible to do segments on other weather features similar to the way that the Foehn effect was explained in this video? I studied this when studying Physical Geography A Level but that was over 40 years ago(!).Thank you everyone in producing these videos. They are a highlight of my week! Best wishes to all.
I met a marine engineer in Buckey, Scotland who called Easterlies the lazy wind, because it can't be bothered to go around you so it just goes straight through.
Fabulous, But it doesn't look like I'll be going to classic car shows this weekend as I planned! But never mind at least it's going to feel warm. The history is very interesting. I enjoy telling people what really happened years ago with your facts.
Another great instalment, thanks. Now we are heading towards Winter maybe you could do a segment with Dr. Judah Cohen who specialises in Winter weather and the polar vortex?
I live in the North East and we have not had much rain at all! I just want some old fashioned Autumn weather,I look forward to the deep dive each Tuesday it's very interesting. Thanks❤

The summer here in South London was overall pretty decent. June wasn't great and early July was cool and wet but from mid July onwards it was mostly dry with a few days over 30C.
Much enjoyed, as usual. Perhaps we can cover where the hottest weather, the stormyest weather and the wettest weather was across the world and compared to the UK weather around the same time through the year. Extremes are always interesting where weather is concerned. 👋🥵
Thanks Alex, enjoyed this, I watched all the way to end. I have a question about the temperature graph you showed that indicates climate change. What is the average length of a planetary meteorological cycle, and can we be sure of climate change based on trends over 100 years, when it is possible it could be part of a much larger trend/fluctuation/cycle, for example 10,000 years?
Certainly no summer here in Northern Ireland, nothing above 25°C and significantly above average rainfall, also west Scotland seen its wettest summer on the records.
Alex Deakin says at the start of the deep dive video "why had we had so many thunderstorms recently"........he's got to be taking the mick......... hardly any thunder this summer let alone recently. What has happened to those great thundery plumes of old?
It was a reference to the recent past, the storms over the weekend and this week. I agree we've had a lack of summer storms this year, linked to the cooler theme.
Well, I live in North East Essex. We haven’t had any thunderstorms we virtually had no rain now for weeks and weeks we are desperate for some rain but we seem to miss it every time.
Summer. The best day of the year. Its near enough rained every day since last september till july this year ans been pretty meh weather with one hot day then back to soggy meh
It's just the way we do it, we're not trying to change anything, we've always measured seasons like that. You can measure them how you want, lots of people use astronomical seasons which would mean Autumn starts on the 22nd this year as that's when the equinox is.
June is much warmer than September and ask anyone to name the 3 summer months and we all know which 3 they will name. Could anything be sillier than 20 September being a summer day but 20 June not!
Just a thought guys, I fortunately live on the Isle of Wight (Cowes), with a home battery system, so my focus is on cloud cover and whether I can risk the batteries depleting knowing that the following day will recharge rather than relying on the grid. Is cloud cover something you can mention?
The jet stream was very loopy, just like last year, making the heat stuck at southern Europe, with records falling, especially in south-east Europe. Be grateful we just avoided the worst of it
It’s not been too bad here in the SW of England. We’ve been lucky. We’re south of Dartmoor in the South Hams. I often watch the dark clouds pass us by across Dartmoor, whilst it’s sunny here. I’ve always assumed it’s due to the Foehn Effect, as mentioned today, as we get a lot of South Westerlies..?
I would love to hear a comparison with September in previous years. I may be wrong but September appears to be warmer and more humid on a regular basis in recent years.
I’d really like to have part of the deep dive as a retrospective - go back to last week’s forecast and see how accurate it was and if/why it was different etc.
Interesting suggestion thanks

Au revoir Summer! It's was lovely seeing you for a couple of hours this year.
Interesting. Climate perhaps naturally fluctuates?
Of course it does. Climate numpties select the facts that suit their narative. If you go back to the 1700s it was much warmer!@Lenticloudular
He's just so enthusiastic! Makes learning about the weather all the more engaging. Geat job by all the team 👍
Alex Deakin….legend mate. You make weather so interesting. Amazing show. Best presenter on tv. Carry on making it interesting mate.

Nicely explained Alex, simple and clear so everyone can understand, including those who like to blame the weather man.
Thank you, love that detail, and you're showing the weather going out into France & beyond, which we need so much, because we travel there so much. 😊👍
Fascinating stuff, beautifully presented. Keep ‘em coming!

Got stacks of tomatoes on the allotment all green, no chance of enough sun to ripen now, hopeless spring and summer.

Coolest summer since 2015 interesting 🤔 didn’t the global temperature hit a record high this year, how has the U.K. bucked the global trend ?
The jet stream was very loopy, just like last year, making the heat stuck at southern Europe, with records falling, especially in south-east Europe. Be grateful we just avoided the worst of it
There's always going to be regional variations, our summer was still warm by 1960's standards
@@Notasmurf-vw6torather have heat than eternal October
@@Notasmurf-vw6to grateful? I'm not sure that's the best word for it, warmer weather is better for horticulture, most plants prefer warmer weather.
