aw, poor Siskel. he's doing so awesome. especially considering what was going on. for all of us, he just seemed tired and thin; NOT someone who was dying horrendously from brain-eating cancer. THAT is a professional. THAT is a star. thanks for that, Mr. Siskel. we miss you.
He apparently wasn't suffering, however, from what I heard from Ebert at the time, in a Larry King interview. What you see here is basically where he was at IRL - he was mellower than before and spent a lot of time smiling and listening to Ebert talk.
@@squamish4244 And there was a definite softening from Ebert, too. He would still argue his corner with Siskel, but he wouldn't interrupt or talk over him so much.
FYI - Jim Carrey recently mentioned this special on the hollywood reporter round table. He said it was his best moment of his career when Siskel and Ebert praised him after always bashing his past movies.
Don't feel that way. Enjoy the era, because when you watch it you get a special feeling that younger people don't get because they have no idea and they were never there.
Or the train wreck Carey became during the making of that movie. He seriously went off the deep end behind the scenes and his reputation and career really suffered for it.
Watching the show kind of made me feel warm because how much I loved Jim Carrey but also the show captured an era very well, an era of television when I was a kid.
Because the producers are scared to death that the comedy in movies may offend someone. God forbid they write a joke that may cause a viewer to feel bad, lol. People are so lame nowadays.
What I love about Jim Carrey is his energy, personality, physical flexible body movements & impressions makes us laugh HILARIOUSLY even sometimes when he goes over the top. These movies i enjoy of him THE MASK EARTH GIRLS ARE EASY THE TRUMAN SHOW MAN ON THE MOON CHRISTMAS CAROL FUN WITH DICK & JANE LIAR LIAR
He was WONDERFUL as Ace Ventura. Then he was wonderful in The Mask. Dumb & Dumber is his most outrageous comedy. And IMO, Jim's best comedy is Liar Liar. His greatest performance was as Andy Kaufman in Man On The Moon
Hahaha "Garage sale six fifty marked down from ten!" 🤣 Edit; BTW, it was a Rhinoceros, Roger lol not a Hippopotamus, that he squeezed and contorted himself out through the rear orifice of in, "Ace Ventura; When Nature Calls." "Mighty HOT in these Rhinos!" 🤣 (I'm just sayin' 👍) #DontShootTheMessenger
It’s good when you watch it for a second time, or at least that was my experience. I didn’t like it the first time, but going back and watching it many years later, I liked it a lot more.
They reran this special at the end of the summer, but with no updates. Too bad. They could've mentioned how well TS did, or the fact that he had an upcoming part in Simon Birch and Man on the Moon was becoming a reality. Too bad Gene didn't live to see that film.
IMHO Jim Carrey movies are very hit and miss. Some real turds, some just "meh" predictable, and some real home runs. My wife simply cannot stand him in any movie, but I loved a select few, namely The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and The Truman Show. Also quite liked Yes Man even though it falls into that familiar cliche of romcom with a cursed naive male protagonist (Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty).
sucked compared to what exactly? in context the movie is hilarious. Sure, it's no Au Hasard Balthazar or Vertigo, but you probably aren't familiar with the latter films anyways so your opinion means shit.

i am sorry to say that Siskel is a huge door knob. What a pompous anti-social TH-camr he would have been.
FYI - Jim Carrey recently mentioned this special on the hollywood reporter round table. He said it was his best moment of his career when Siskel and Ebert praised him after always bashing his past movies.
That's what brought me here today.
I feel so old watching these old shows.
Me too!
Don't feel that way. Enjoy the era, because when you watch it you get a special feeling that younger people don't get because they have no idea and they were never there.
The ending is so sad because Siskel never lived to see Man On the Moon.
I know right😢
Or the train wreck Carey became during the making of that movie. He seriously went off the deep end behind the scenes and his reputation and career really suffered for it.
@@stiimuli Agreed. It was like the beginning of his character deteriorating in real life.
Ebert died right?
@@royfr8136 Both did.
I notice they glazed over Once Bitten (1985) when running down his early movies.
Watching the show kind of made me feel warm because how much I loved Jim Carrey but also the show captured an era very well, an era of television when I was a kid.
I miss the times a comedic actor could sell a movie and it would make millions. Comedies aren’t money makers anymore.
I wonder why. I miss the type of funny movies from the 90's and 00's.
Because the producers are scared to death that the comedy in movies may offend someone. God forbid they write a joke that may cause a viewer to feel bad, lol. People are so lame nowadays.
Looking back on The Mask, it almost feels like an independent film
well it's a reflection of how big cartoons were in 1994. Another thing from 1994 that spoofed Tex Avery was Earthworm Jim.
The Mask was ahead of its time. It’s like singular in a way. Independent film vibes with tremendous special effects that still hold up to this day.
20:30 Too bad Siskel never get to watch that movie😥
Carrey had a 6-7 year successful run unmatched by any other comic actor since maybe Jerry Lewis' late 1950's to early 60's run.
I actually think the best run since Chaplin or Keaton.
Lewis’s movies sucked except Bellboy
Me,Myself And Irene was hilarious as well. He was smmmmokinnnnn'🔥
Huge thanks for uploading this.
I wonder what Siskel would have made of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?
This is so incredibly sad to watch. Gene is so sick around this period
I loved The Cable Guy. I love a good dark comedy.
I like it a lot too. Not Carrey’s best but I have a soft spot for it.
They were critical, without being mean. Stuck to the facts, and even with bad films, they treated those films with artistic respect.
I wish more would do the same.
Eternal Sunshine and Truman Show are the only movies I can still watch over and over like a kid.
Jim Carrey’s 90s run is unmatched

THE TRUMAN SHOW

One of the last specials they did. Interesting they never did the one Gene said they were going to do in Air Bud.
He was WONDERFUL as Ace Ventura. Then he was wonderful in The Mask. Dumb & Dumber is his most outrageous comedy. And IMO, Jim's best comedy is Liar Liar. His greatest performance was as Andy Kaufman in Man On The Moon
Oh Ace Ventura was definitely the most outrageous!

He’s also excellent in Man / Moon
"Cable Guy" is sneakily really really good. Some funny stuff in that one!
It’s good when you watch it for a second time, or at least that was my experience. I didn’t like it the first time, but going back and watching it many years later, I liked it a lot more.
I think it was so different from his other movies that it threw people off at first - not what they were expecting.

I must say,
Jim Carrey playing Plastic Man?
I’m so in for that..
No other actor (that I can think of) made three classic films all in one year. Dumb & Dumber, Ace Ventura and The Mask.
Together they also have an animated series.
Poor Gene never got to see man on the moon. My bet is he would’ve loved it.
I want to see Carrey in some more serious roles in these older years.
They forgot to mention 1985's Once Bitten.
Dumb and Dumber, the Mask, Liar, Liar, and Batman Forever and the first Ace Ventura are all classics.
Agreed! And that's not even making mention of the fact that the 2nd Ace Ventura was even better than the first! Carrey was KILLIN' IT!
classics? not sure about that. look at the AFI 100 and see if he can compare.
@@orangewarm1 'Cult classics' at least
looking forward to sonic the hedgehog
The only thing the Truman Show never saw coming was that people would start doing this to themselves
I like the majestic..... I know it's a little cheesy but it is a good

I'm not a huge fan of his either but he does deserve respect for what he's accomplished.

Well, at least they owned their mistake. Gotta respect that.
The eat crow episode lol
Siskel can't help himself in showing how he enjoys being right about Jim Carrey more than Ebert was lol
The Truman Shop was popular because it copied the successful The 1960s Prisoner UK TV series concept but gave impression it was original.
EXCUSE ME HE IS CANADA'S FUNNY MAN
Canada is part of North America, hence "America's funny man".

Yeah well Canada also delivered Justin Bieber to the world so, 🖕

Can you post their episode of Bill Murray?

"Classy Clown"...a lot better than "Gassy Clown"
Missed Almighty
Man I'd fight these guys IRL over Robin Williams' movies from the 90s
Once bitten?
Back when Jim Carrey was “sane”
The Cable Guy was Jim's worst starring role film if you ask me
No way. It's on of his most unique!
Video keeps stopping at 42 seconds. What's the problem ?
Your Internet.
I absolutely hate these two!! Even though they are not with us anymore, I will never EVER like them!!
I wonder if more people like them or you?
They were right about Ace Ventura. It sucked. Only thing about it with me is my cousin did the score.
sha11235 his animated series did best.
If it sucked then why did it make as much money as it did and why did it make Jim Carrey a huge star? ;)
