He encouraged his students and made learning both fun and easy. He also inspired his students to want to do their best. Those are the hallmarks of a great teacher.
It wasn't just to eat but, specifically, to eat chocolate after a dementor attack. You don't get any more than that in the movies. It's basically just "Here, have a candy bar. You'll feel better," and that's it. In the books, however, Madam Pomfrey, the Hogwarts school healer, remarks something to the effect of, "It's good that some people still know the old cures" when she is told that Lupin gave them chocolate after the dementor attack, and at the end of "The Prisoner of Azkaban" she makes Harry & Hermione eat chocolate to help them recover from being attacked by the dementors. In the movie, it only shows Harry & Sirius being attacked by the dementors there on the lakeshore, but in the book, Hermione is also with them. She wasn't attacked as badly as Harry & Sirius. The dementors attempted to administer their fatal kiss to both of them before they were driven off by Harry's patronas, but the attack on Hermione was still serious enough to leave her unconscious for quite some time. Madam Pomfrey made both her & Harry eat several pieces of chocolate to help them recover.
I would have switched Quirrell and Lockhart. Also, people tend to put Snape high when they make this list but something to consider is that although Snape was the most talented and powerful out of all of these teachers, I would argue that he wasn't a good teacher. The reason people tended to do terribly in his potion class was that he was overly harsh and played favorites. Harry even commented on this when he was taking his potions OWL. His test went much better than expected because Snape wasn't there. I'm sure it would have been the same when he taught DADA. When people are naturals at a skill, like Snape was with magic, they tend to be terrible at teaching people that same skill. Teaching is a skill all its own and it was one that Snape didn't have. He was unquestionably an amazing wizard but a terrible teacher.
Would have put Lockhart in the bottom of the list. The ones below him on this list where all more capable people, bad, but capable. Lockhart couldn't do anything himself...
I think the idea behind Snape being a good teacher was because he became a lot more relaxed with DADA compared to potions. This is probably because it was the role that he had clearly been wanting ever since he started working there, and isn't a constant reminder of Lily; if I recall correctly, Snape only got good at potions to impress her.
I like the idea of Dumbledore eventually giving up on trying to break the jinx on D.A.D.A and just using it as a way to dispose of bad wizards and phoneys
imagine his thought when he likely found out the minister wants to put someone as teacher at hogwarts "Oh yeah sure, we always need new DADA teacher anyway. nothing wrong with that at all."
I just find Dumbledore so cool! The things he does always get doubted at first but slowly you see why he does things, he’s also so kind and always sees the truth. On top of that he never shouts things (not literally) he does things to prove things and let the world see the truth for themselves

I have only one difference in my ranking - Snape is even lower with me, under Quirrell and Lockhart, but above Carrow and Umbridge. The reasoning is, while Snape was a great expert on both dark arts and DADA and his teachings were very valuable, he was a bad teacher. Blatant favoritism combined with bullying attitude and using dread as a tool in teaching merges into a teacher that's so hurtful to his students' psyche that it offsets his undeniable expertise, ranking him IMO below the "blanks". I'm a teacher myself and, while neither is good, I would far rather "teach like Quirrell" than "teach like Snape". That said, Lupin, McGonagall, Flitwick and Sprout were the best teachers Hogwats had. I aspire specifically to teach like somewhere between Lupin and Flitwick.
@@Alche_mist You make a valid point. I'm still a student, and if I had a teacher like Snape, I don't think I would even want to attend the school anymore. His treatment of the Gryffindors, Harry and Neville in particular, are so hard to excuse. That said, he was knowledgeable about the dark arts, and that has to account for something, especially cause I can't say Lockhart was especially knowledgeable about anything other than memory magic. Quirrel didn't seem particularly skillful in anything either. So based off of that, I ranked him higher. But if I was ranking them based off of how they treat the class, Snape would be just above Carrow. Lupin, Flitwick, Sprout, and McGonagall are definitely the best teachers there, I agree with you on that. Slughorn seems pretty good as well, but his favoritism is a flaw, as the whole concept of the Slug Club is built off his ambition to have the best students with him. Still leagues better than Snape tho
NGL, I almost cried happy tears to see Lupin at the top of this list. He got so much crap thrown at him in life. He deserves recognition for what an amazing person he was and the amazing job he did. He's basically proof that circumstances don't make a person, choices do.
I'd say my top would be Barty Crouch Jr. He taught and gave hints Harry on how to survive the Tri Wizard Tournament, which basically prepared him against Voldermort in the grave yard.
@@magiccloud3074 I agree. I think the assessment of Quirrel is a bit harsh as well considering how we only really see what he taught 1st year students, who you realistically wouldn't expect to learn anything too dangerous. I'd say Lockheart and Umbridge were joint worse due to not teaching anything useful followed by Carrow (even if Crabe did die due to his inability to control Fiend Fire he was still seemingly able to teach something), Snape (for the reasons you mentioned), Quirrel, Barty Jnr. and Lupin.
@@waluigist Indeed (I was factoring in the fact that Crabbe failed his OWL DADA in as something in favour of Carrow's skills as a teacher being as Crabbe and Goyle were apparently pretty good at Dark Arts in general in comparison).
@@magiccloud3074 Well I'd dispute that, since Snape was said to be incredibly talented at Potions and an excellent teacher to those he deemed worth teaching. He turned out fewer exceptional students than other Potions masters, but those who did succeed went on to do many great things. However, Snape is described as having been an even better DADA professor since it was the topic he was passionate about. He was even willing to take students with lower O.W.L. grades because he would teach them to become the best. But that's just what the books/J.K. Rowling says.

Lupin was the best DADA teacher in my opinion. He knew what he was doing, he liked his job, he was good at teaching, and was understanding, different from Snape, who though very talented, was more focused on bullying students rather than teaching them. Barty Crouch as Mad-Eye Moody actually taught them some useful spells as well, kind of prepared Harry to duel Voldemort in that Graveyard.
@@don8764 Well you can't heal from a dementor's kiss, it takes your soul away, which is why the patronus charm was taught to Harry. I don't mean to grate on this, I just feel a better choice of words could've made it a lot clearer.
Your being to hard on severus, if you were a true pottah head you would know that severus was a great man but James, his parents and lily made him be like this and severus would have 100% been a better professor than remus if he had not been through a lot severus is very underrated but I have too agree lupin was a good professor and did his job well.
My list would be: #6: Umbitch: Apart from Hermione I don't think any student learnt anything from her that year. #5: Amycus Carrow: Teaching dark arts also means learning about how they work and what the weak points are. Students can then find out how to defend against it. Even though he was a very bad teacher, he was still better than Umbitch. #4: Lockhart: The video explained enough :) #3: Quirrel: He still taught the students about DADA, so not DA like Carrow, and he really thaught the students something, unlike Umbitch, and he was more capable than Lockhart. #2: Severus Snape: Plenty of knowledge about the subject, really taught DADA and the students learnt a lot. However, we're still talking about Snape, so if you're not a Slytherin you'll still have a hard time when you're in his classroom (understatement). #1: Lupin and Moody/Crouch jr.: They both were excellent teachers. Lupin knew a lot about dark creatures and how to deal with them. Moody/Crouch jr. knew a lot about dark wizards, dark spells etc and how to deal with them. He even taught the students how to break out of the imperius charm (books, not the movie). Because of this they are both #1 Edit: I know it's spelled "Umbridge"
This was my list starting from the bottom: Lockhart: I don’t think I need to say anything Quirrell: Yeah it was a toss up between him and Lockhart but in the end he beat Lockhart. Umbridge: probably hated her more than Belatrix and Voldemort combined, but at least she had the characters study something even if it was useless. Carrow: he taught them dark arts Instead of defence, so if I were to play devils advocate he would of been a great teacher for dark arts. Snape: Good teacher and had clear knowledge I was considering putting him in second place but but there was someone who had a slight lead. Moody/barty: he was a good teacher, he didn’t shy away from showing the students the unforgivables and giving them an idea of what it would he like to really have to defend yourself in a real situation, he didn’t coddle them. Remus: do I have to explain, best teacher ever, love him and his teaching methods, ability to make lessons fun and interactive, while still teaching.
Lol, snape was more focused on bullying students rather than teaching. Would have made no sense for him to be in second given how much of a dickwad he was. Just because you're knowledgeable doesn't mean you can bully your students.
I would put Quirrell above Umbridge, because while he didn't teach much (he was too scared to) he at least was not actively trying to NOT teach the students like Umbridge/Ministry.
I think the most important aspect about Lupin is that (in book and film) he encourages Neville - who is bullied by Snape - to tackle the boggart, so Neville finds his own power a becomes way more self-confident
"You didn't expect him here..." - excuse who the hell did NOT expect a deatheater torturing first years in the last spot? o.O Then again, personally I would've switched Quirrel and Lockhard - Sure, Voldemort and stuff, but voldemort didn't really affect the ongoing of dada lessons, and despite being a bad practician, a teacher with theoretical knowledge is worth more than... well, Lockhard.
I only have 1 disagreement with this list. While Amycus taught Dark Arts not defence he still did practical teaching whereas Umbridge did no practical teaching so I think he was a better teacher for that reason even if the subject matter was slightly twisted. It was also implied that Crabbe didnt listen to when Amycus taught them how to stop fiendfyre.
Well yes but actually no. Amycus may or may not be a good dark arts teacher but he was definitely a horrible DEFENCE AGAINST the dark arts teacher. But youre right about Crabbe, he most certainly did not listen when the counter course of the fyre was taught
Umbridge was a good teacher for what she was aiming to do. Her goal was to teach theoretical DADA only. The students learned fairly well, better than Lockhart, Quirrel or Carrow
Dolores I need a list 1 tortured kids with quills 2 almost used the crucio 3 never taught students magic just theory when they needed it most even though she could have became something great but chose to be a stupid teacher 4 changed to Voldemort’s side 5 let filch torture the students 6 didn’t let the Fred George and Harry play quidditch when they pounded Malfoy because he shamed Harry’s mother and the twin’s father
Barty crouch Jr was such a wasted talent he was intelligent and skilled in magic if he actually tried to built his career in magic world how efficient he would have been but he choosed choosed wrong path and screwed himself.
Wonder what kind of spell Voldemort used to curse the DADA position. I can imagine him walking out the front door, turn around with his wand and yell "Butthurtio!"
It was probably one of those long spells with a ritual attached. He permanently jinxed a position of power, not an object and location. A mere short spell won’t do it
1-Lupin: 100% with no explanation 2:Harry: Ik he wasn't technically a DADA Teacher but he was head of Dumbledore's army and taught the members DADA 3-Snape: The triple agent thing made him below harry 4-Mad-Eye Moody/ body crouch jr.: He wasn't the worst 5-Lockhart: i hate him 6-Quirrell: Voldy was living on him 7:Acumys 8-UMBRIDGE IS WORSE THAN VOLDY
Did dumbledore not let snape be the dark arts proffesor because he knew after that year he would lose him. And only didnt let him get that postion to keep him at hogwarts
I've heard it's because a truly good potions master is very hard to find. Not easily mastered at all. Also that Lily was very good at potions, Snape learned it to impress her, so it might be an extra dig from Dumbledore, a constant reminder for Snape of why he is there in the first place.
To me personally I think lupin was the best dark arts teacher. He taught the kids the most and he really cared about the position, school and students, especially harry and all of his friends. His and tonks deaths were very upsetting for me. Great job as always never miss a video.🔥🔥

Actually if umbridge wasnt in order of the pheonix it would have no conflict and it would be as short as philosipher's stone adding umbridge was a very good idea for that one book
The best teacher of defense against the dark arts was Harry Potter himself- he taught fellow students so well they were able to fight grown Deatheaters.
My personal list: 7. Carrow 6. Umbridge 5. Lockhart 4. Snape 3 Quirrell 2. "Moody" 1. Lupin I could switch Snape and Quirrell around, but since Snape was so biased with the students and only seemed to award those in his own house, I would put him under Quirrell. Quirrell was a huge mess, but if I remember correctly, Harry still learned things from him.
Best DADA teacher was Harry Potter himself, in Umbridge's year he taught the subject quiet well. Remus Lupin Severus Snape Barty Jr. (although disguised as Alastar Moody) Gilderoy Lockhart Quirinus Quirrel Doloremous Umbricula (name mixed with Venomous Tentacula) Amycus Carrow
You could say Harry Potter was the best "Defense Against the Dark Arts" teacher, but in a rouge, unofficial capacity. His class was a small army to fight the dark; it was even more like boot camp for war than a class. Most effective.
It’s a shame Bartry crouch jr was on Voldemort’s side. He was a good teacher, and actually cared about what he was teaching. I’d like to imagine, that if he wasn’t on Voldemort’s side, he would have become a hogwarts professor. His lessons would have probably been quite enjoyable, and everyone would have learnt quite a lot
I would rank the teachers (as far as teaching in general, I know a couple of them were revealed to be villains later on, but I'm not gonna let that effect their ratings) 1. Remus Lupin 2."Alastor Moody" 3. Professor Quirrel 4. Severus Snape (he may be very experienced but he bullies his students) 5. Gilderoy Lockhart 6. Delores Umbridge (who's about 2 centimeters away from last place) 7. Amycus Carrow
@@coderbunny5653 no it was ron. just looked it up on wikapedia “Due to Lockhart's overall poor performances, the class did not learn anything about true defence, and Ron claimed that he only learned not to set pixies loose, and would have dropped the course had he been allowed to.” i was referring to the students and what they learned. most of them pretty much ignored him or gazed adoringly. the boys just saw him as a blowhard and beneath paying any attention and the girls just well were like teenage boys watching baywatch. i dont disagree with dumbledores comment but harry didnt need to learn not to be greedy the dursleys took care of that. and the weasleys taught ron too even if he like most teenagers would occasionally forget momentarily. though i do agree that lockhart did display exactly what an egotistical and self absorbed creature looked like and how it is an ugly sight
Here’s what I think before I watch this video: 1 - Remus Lupin 2 - Alastar Mad-Eye Moody (the real one) 3 - Severus Snape 4 - Gilderoy Lockhart 5 - Quirrel 6 - Amycus Carrow 7 - The old pink toad Edit: ok that’s only because I didn’t see how Carrow tortured students from Harry’s storyline
First year: a man obsessed with Lord Voldemort that he ended up having the Dark Lord a parasite of his body. Gets killed by Harry because Lord Voldemort could not touch Harry. Second year: a fraudulent teacher that stole achievements of other wizards by memory wiping them, ends up getting his memory wiped aswell. Third year: a very good teacher. He taught Harry the Patrous charm. He was a werewolf and he had to leave to protect the school Fourth year: a death eater impersonating a famous dark wizard catcher. He became a teacher to trap Harry and to resurrect Lord Voldemort. Got found out and taken to Azkaban. Fifth year: a bitch of a woman from the ministry trying to hide the fact Lord Voldemort has returned, loved punishing the students. Got tricked by Harry and Hermione and ended up getting captured by Centaurs. Sixth year: a very good teacher but a double agent of Lord Voldemort, tasked with assassinating Albus Dumbledore. Seventh year: a death eater that taught dark arts instead of how to defend from them. He also enjoys punishing and torturing first years. Got taken out by Snape ricocheting McGonnagals spells at him.
Personally, i think that Barty should be in second place, he may have been a death eater, but when it comes to his teaching abilities, he was actually good at it, an overall, he was even better at comunicating with the students than Snape.
We can place Lupin at the top, as we really like his character, but Moody/Crouch taught Harry many skills that would aid him in his long fight against Voldemort. Like Carrow, Courch inadvertently contributed to the eventual downfall of his master.
@@LyleFrancisDelp also if we're talking about professors who helped harry we have to give snape lots of credit. The half-blood prince book and snape saved harry from falling off his broom in quidditch in the sorcerer's stone.

I had forgotten all about Carrow. While I might quibble with your middle choice rankings, I certainly agree with placing Remus Lupin at the top of the list. Played to perfection by David Thewlis, Lupin might have arisen to the level of one of the best instructors at Hogwarts had circumstances been different.
Worst to Best 1) Umbridge, evil and useless. 2) Carrow, evil and mostly useless. 3) Lockhart, less evil and just as useless. But his stories were true about someone. 4) Quirrell, more evil but less useless. 5) Moody/Crouch, just as evil but a better teacher. 6) Lupin, not evil and an excellent teacher. 7) Snape, also not evil and the best teacher. Just my opinion but I’ll take evil and competent over good and useless.

Amazing, Cornelius Fudge denied the reality of Voldemort's return and attempted to wish away the problem. Where have I seen that in our real world recently?
Judging by what's written between the lines, I would swap Quirrell and Lockhart. The former seemed to follow the cirriculum in the boring, but reasonable way and his job was to not cause any suspicion and he didn't until the very end. Latter had mess up after mess up that he tried to cover up. Still better than Umbridge though. I would also maybe swap Umbridge and Death Eaters, due to the productivity of the classes (I don't think that teaching Dark Arts instead of the Defense against them has negative value, and Umbridge classes were completely useless, as not only it was only a theory, It was also only a revision of theory they've learned under ambitious Lupin and "Moody") and maybe swap "Moody" and Snape, cause judging by the mood of the students, he was an exceptionally good teacher as well and students were eager to learn from him, unlike with Snape. So in the end: 7. Dolores Umbridge 6. Amycus Carrow 5. Gilderoy Lockhart 4. Quirinus Quirrell 3. Severus Snape 2. Barty Crouch jr. 1. Remus Lupin
Snape was by far the most learned in the DarkArts on this list, but as a teacher, he was woefully ineffective, even in potions. His penchant for bullying and belittling his students is no way of teaching anything.
Also in potions we know he is EXTREMELY talented (as evidenced by half blood prince's potions book) yet he never teaches the kids any of the tricks he learnt that are better than the original textbook. He just writes the instructions on the board and mocks them when they make a mistake, which is definitely not effective teaching.
@@mikelapadvaiskas9996 just asking but how do you know that the instructions given by Snape are the not the simplified ones that he had written in his own book? It could have easily been that. Agree with you on the bad teaching part.
I would say that Carrow was a better teacher than Umbridge, or even Lockhart for that matter, simply because he actually taught the students, albeit in a frightening and destructive way that led to much chaos and pain.
VIDEO IDEA: so we know magic is genetic and in your DNA. Is being magic binary (wizard or muggle, no in between) or is there a gradient? Like are there muggles walking around that just miss the cutoff to get into Hogwarts and can do small magic things? And wizards who are just magical enough to be included in the magic world? And does all this time into how powerful a wizard/witch is?
Another reason why Lupin was the best DADA teach and best teacher in general, he wasn't let the students be in a more casual enviroment, refering to them by their first name and not their family name like with every student. It showed that not only was he there to teach. But he was there to be, for lack of a better term, a friend to the students
I feel like the most useful teacher to Harry was fake mad eye moody because he taught Harry the 3 unforgivable curses which played a big role in the war and robing gringots(notice how I said useful and not best)
Totally agree about Lupin being the best one. I'd place Snape in second place, with potential to have been first if he had a more user friendly teaching style. Madeye / Crouch in third place. After that, they are all unfit for purpose.

Yeah I think Moody outranks Snape. Also, Carrow taught more than Umbridge
I would rank Carrow worse than Umbridge
according to Neville, carrow was worse than Umbridge ever was
I would put Quirrell above Gilderoy. Quirrell at least taught something beyond how to smile.

I’ve only read until the fifth book but I know a lot from others and I would definitely cry
I'd say Lockheart and Umbridge were joint worse due to not teaching anything useful followed by Carrow (even if Crabe did die due to his inability to control Fiend Fire he was still seemingly able to teach something), Snape (for the reasons you mentioned), Quirrel, Barty Jnr. and Lupin.
Tempest Fennac he taught crabbe something, something that is difficult to do considering it’s crabbe
I dis agree it’s you because Barry crouch him self who put Harry in the tornumant

He taught Harry the patrons charms, how to defeat a boggart, and how to heal up from the dementors kiss, etc
@@don8764 Well you can't heal from a dementor's kiss, it takes your soul away, which is why the patronus charm was taught to Harry. I don't mean to grate on this, I just feel a better choice of words could've made it a lot clearer.

But that's no excuse to hate on severus
I always enjoy reading Lockhart, but it's a crime he was a teacher at Hogwarts, poor students who did their OWL or NEWTS this year..
My list would be:
#6: Umbitch: Apart from Hermione I don't think any student learnt anything from her that year.
#5: Amycus Carrow: Teaching dark arts also means learning about how they work and what the weak points are. Students can then find out how to defend against it. Even though he was a very bad teacher, he was still better than Umbitch.
#4: Lockhart: The video explained enough :)
#3: Quirrel: He still taught the students about DADA, so not DA like Carrow, and he really thaught the students something, unlike Umbitch, and he was more capable than Lockhart.
Because of this they are both #1
Edit: I know it's spelled "Umbridge"
Agreed!
Glad I am not he only one who read the books and remembers Crouch jr. actually teaching the class how to break out of imperius curse (its not a charm)
Lupin is number 1 on every single ranking i've ever seen. This would be much exciting if you ranked them from best to worst.
You can try watching ranking of the death eaters
well Umbridge is usually also always the worst
This was my list starting from the bottom:
Lockhart: I don’t think I need to say anything
Quirrell: Yeah it was a toss up between him and Lockhart but in the end he beat Lockhart.
"You didn't expect him here..." - excuse who the hell did NOT expect a deatheater torturing first years in the last spot? o.O
Then again, personally I would've switched Quirrel and Lockhard - Sure, Voldemort and stuff, but voldemort didn't really affect the ongoing of dada lessons, and despite being a bad practician, a teacher with theoretical knowledge is worth more than... well, Lockhard.
I imagine most people forget Carrow was a thing, since Harry didn't actually attend Hogwarts that year and thus didn't experience it firsthand
I think he meant "here on the list at all" since he technically taught a different class altogether (just DA instead of DADA)
My vote is Remus as well. Also imagine having Madeye, Snape, and Lupin as your teachers. You’d be the greatest wizard ever lol.
Snape and Lupin would be my top 2 picks for best DADA professors. They're both good in their own way
I only have 1 disagreement with this list.
A teacher with good teaching methods is a good teacher but if that teacher is twisted yeah no i'll go with umbridge
Well yes but actually no. Amycus may or may not be a good dark arts teacher but he was definitely a horrible DEFENCE AGAINST the dark arts teacher. But youre right about Crabbe, he most certainly did not listen when the counter course of the fyre was taught
@Cosima Liang true

I've heard it's because a truly good potions master is very hard to find. Not easily mastered at all. Also that Lily was very good at potions, Snape learned it to impress her, so it might be an extra dig from Dumbledore, a constant reminder for Snape of why he is there in the first place.

If Dumbledore let him have the job he wouldn’t be able to protect Harry

7. Dolores Umbridge
6. Amycus Carrow
5. Gilderoy Lockhart
4. Quirinus Quirrell
3. Severus Snape
@@mikelapadvaiskas9996 Exactly.

I would say that Carrow was a better teacher than Umbridge, or even Lockhart for that matter, simply because he actually taught the students, albeit in a frightening and destructive way that led to much chaos and pain.
(Potential) Better DADA Professors than Dolores Umbridge: A sock puppet, a goldfish, a Stetson hat, a cup of coffee.. and definitely my cat.
Voldemort: Curses the DATDA professorship so it blows up after a year...
Also Voldemort: Repeatedly installs his spies as DATDA professors...
Even posing as one of said professors in the book. That curse really bit him in the ass.
Mad eye/crouch was the best. I love him
Crouch is a Death Eater

Yeah. You're talking about in the order of the Phoenix? Right? I agree. He was a great Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.
He taught, yeah, so I get where you're coming from- but he wasn't technically a professor, which is why I chose not to include him.
@@HarryPotterTheory Well since you are here. If you had to give like an honorable mentions position where would you put him?
My list
Lockhart
Quirel
Umbridge (i think she was the worst but she was so bad she encouraged a large group of students to practice)
Snape
Lupin
Crouch
Hey mate, thanks for all the great content.
Question, do you do "what if"-videos?
If so here's one: "What if Harry had remembered that he got a mirror from Sirius for christmas that he could use to contact him, which he had stored in his trunk all the frigging time while he thought Sirius was in danger?"
if you include fantastic beast the list would be the same yet dumbledor would be number 1 in my view. from the harry potter books only i fully agree with this list
Its the fact that a child (harry) was one of the best DADA teachers 😬💀
yes
Video Idea:What happened to Ludo Bagman? Why he disappeared to him after goblet of fire
Probably locked up by those goblins,
in some dungeon. :p
I was upset when both Remus and Tonks died and Teddy had to become an orphan, but at least Harry was able to fulfill the godfather role.
Same here I couldn't stop crying it is the same with Dobby, Snape, Fred and Mad-eye😭😿
Umbrige flipping almost used the crutashus curse on harry
