I did this with my wife last year. To be honest I wasn't that thrilled when she told me she wanted to to it, it didn't seem that interesting to me because I've never heard much about it, but it's really one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen, and almost sureal. One minute it looks like your on a carribean island, the next in Alaska. Some areas were almost primordial looking, with a sandy forest floor covered with lichens and ferns. Very strange, I've never seen anything like it.
You're what's wrong with modernity. Just being outside -- nevermind this utterly magical place -- at any local forest or trail is better than being walled indoors in (sub)urban sprawl. NO ONE goes outside anymore. Apparently, being holed up in your house is much more enriching, I guess. 🙄
Check out Isle Royale for a similar environment but on a completely wild island with insanely dense moose populations! All kinds of great wildlife and a rough but beautiful and memorable experience. It was my first backpacking trip and I’m in love with it. Although it’s one of the least visited national parks, it tops the lists of % of visitors who will return, and for average longest stay. Love your channel
Agreed - I was going to make a similar comment but yours is worded perfectly. Dixie is a powerful, strong woman who also sees the beauty wherever she goes - and of course the humor. I giggled at the bugs trying to get somewhere in the sand!
Yay you finally hiked Pictured Rocks! I’m glad your introduction to Michigan was a good one! If you’re looking for more backpacking trips in Michigan the next best ones are Isle Royale, North Manitou Island (part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes), and the Porcupine Mountains.
@@VirginiaGeorge it's not a single trail. There are a bunch of different trails you can take and make it as long or short as you'd like. There's also a lot of beach, so pack a swimsuit! But also pack Deet, because the mosquitos are brutal.
Now you’ll have to experience Lake Superior from the Canadian side by hiking the Coastal Trail in the Agawa area of the Lake Superior Provincial Park. It’s a more physically demanding hike by comparison and no less scenic.
I would highly recommend taking a zero day in Munising and doing a kayak tour of pictured rocks. you can also camp and hike on Grand Island. Backpacking the Porkies with lake of the clouds is very pretty.
I’m glad you got to see one of my favorite parts of the US. Nearby Marquette is a place that will always have my heart since I first started college there back in 2010.
Proud Michigander here! I got engaged at Pictured Rocks. Such a beautiful part of MI. I’m so glad you experienced this! One of my favorite videos, but maybe I’m biased.
Glad you loved my backyard. I have lived here in the U.P. my entire life and I'm still in awe of the beauty of how awesome and blessed that I get to see this every day. You only scratched the surface of the upper peninsula of Michigan's majestic places.
What a lovely video. My wife is from Northern Michigan, so this was a special treat to find these images of a place we both love on our 29th anniversary. As for the car in the woods - it is a 1940s Plymouth. Back then a lot of that part of Michigan was still showing signs of extensively logging, and was more easily accessible by vehicles than it is now. The pines had been cut in the 19th century and the hardwoods were logged out in the early 20th century and often fires swept through the cut-over land. Mostly likely that car was on its last legs sometime in the late 1950s or 1960s and was abandoned on an unpaved trail, maybe by a hunter, and over the last half-century the protected forest regrew around it.
Fantastic video. Fantastic cinematography, Dixie. You know how to point the camera, yes, but you also intuitively know what will look good in the frame and what your viewers will find interesting, educational, or beautiful. And Aaron, you continue to outdo yourself. I’m surprised that, you being so young, don’t choose to cover this with the techno music that’s free and all other creators use for their vids. It wouldn’t be appropriate here. Your music choices are almost always an add. But I’m also impressed by the little things, like the fact that you realize that when you put up the “other videos to watch” cards at the end of the video, it covers the video you’re watching on some devices, so you let us see the real end of the video and then put in a piece that’s not a waste of time but serves as a good backdrop for the cards. Dixie and Aaron = a one in a million team.
Go blue!! Every time I see videos of northern Michigan-u.p my heart Aches... My heart will always belong there... something about Lake Superior that stirs my heart.. I can’t put it into words right. It brings a peace, and stirring, a longing, it reaches in the depths of my heart.. almost haunting... it’s definitely a love thing 😖🥺
Welcome to Michigan, my home state. We used to live in NH and I hated how the sun went down so early. Michigan is at the Western edge of the Eastern time zone so we get the sun much longer in the evening. I used to travel to Alaska a couple times a year for about 6 years. I've been there in the summer (midnight sun and the sun never really sets. It gets like dusk out but not dark.) and in the dead of winter (35 below zero and maybe 3 or 4 hours of sun a day but it's on the horizon and not high in the sky). Lake Superior is cold, unforgiving and spectacular all at the same time. Yes, we are blessed to have all the fresh water from the Great Lakes surrounding us. Glad you enjoyed the trail. John from MI
This was my first backpacking trip and we JUST finished backpacking 20 miles of this trail! Unforgettable trip, bad storm our first night, lots of flies and I got engaged! The U.P. has had my heart for years and I cant wait to go back one day!
As someone who has been to Pictured Rocks, I can also highly recommend. I got to go during peak fall, which was intensely beautiful but also pretty cold.
Lived in Michigan 35 years and camped and hiked many places. I was good to see the Lake Superior shoreline again. Your photography is superb. Sorry you didn't take a night hike. I love how you say that.
Boy, you guys are committed getting up early for the 🌅. You guys are keepin a smile on my face as I'm stuck on the couch recovering from prostatectomy. I noticed awhile back that you two are good people. Thanks for the content!
DONT know how many years been waiting for you to do this one.. your the reason i started hiking.. and this was my families first multiple day hike!! MICHIGAN IS LOADED with trails
Lake Superior is so powerful, incredible in its vastness, and just enchanting to see. The water takes your breath away with its clarity and all the colors of the rocks. No matter where I’ve traveled around this vast lake, it just leaves me in awe. So glad you got to enjoy it Dixie. Your video did it proud.
Absolutely gorgeous! I grew up in Minnesota, so excited you finally got to see the third coast! Lake superior is gorgeous, the type of clear water you get on northern lakes is really unheard of in the south and it's something I've missed since moving southwards. I hope you get up to the Superior Hiking Trail up in Minnesota some day! It's one trail I'm super excited to thru-hike someday since it's so close to home, in the woods that are my childhood.
I'm probably going to be out of step here Dixie but more than the hikes, I come to your vlogs for the photography and videography. Yes the hikes are beautiful but it is the way you set them and the beauty that you capture along the way, in my opinion, surpasses the hikes. The rock formations were just out of this World and pondering how many 100s or 1000s of years it took for the rock shoreline to be carved into the beautiful shapes, the Bee, the Dandelion being set free, the wildlife. That is why I'm here. Yes I love your hikes but it is the way you capture all you view that keeps me coming back. Thank you.
There’s a simple trick to get the sun to rise later. Go to bed earlier. Get up and going earlier. Then, voila, sunrise is later…heh, heh…. I’ve been getting up at 2:30 every morning for years. I do some reading and watching your videos, then I walk to work, before sunrise. Works for me. Oh, I hit he sac about 8:30 to 9:30 every night. I love what you’re doing. Thanks for your hard work ethic, great videography and being such a sweetie. It’s good to know Marty is with you. We have much anxiety when you’re alone. BTW, maybe your eyes swelling is just a morning thing, laying flat. My brother’s face swells and mine doesn’t. I’ve seen it happen in the OR multiple times. Not an allergy issue, a laying flat issue. Don’t worry too much about it. You’re pretty easy on the eyes…after you get up and going, heh, heh. Kentucky
Thank you for this Dixie. I sometimes get functional abdominal pain. It hit while I was at work. I'm the only hospitalist for a 200 bed hospital at night and couldn't even sit up much less see patients due to the pain. The meds weren't working. I lay down and started watching this. It's so relaxing that by the time the video was done I had no pain. Thank you truly for letting us live vicariously through you!
I love that you went here. My sister in law and I went in Aug 21. Your photography is awesome!!!! Such a treasure that we can share! Please come the the ice age trail someday????!!!!
Glad you enjoyed the greatest body of water in the world. I was born in Munising and live 3 blocks from Lake Superior in Marquette now. The winters are harsh but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
You should come up to Canada and hike some of the trails on the north shore. Lake Superior provincial park is amazing, and i'll be on the Pukuskwa trail later this summer.
Yes, I highly recommend Pukaskwa - Dixie would probably shuttle and to the whole Coastal trail, but I enjoyed doing a two night lollypop, first night near Chigaamiwinigum falls, the next at Picture Rock Harbor South.
The color of the lake, with endless shades of blue, is so lovely. Seeing it reminds me of a book I read a few years ago about a woman who kayaked around the entire lake at 43 years old. It took her 65 days and it is a story of adventure and self discovery. The book’s title is “Deep Water Passage” by Ann Linnea.
Thanks for putting this video together for us “armchair hikers” who would LOVE to do this in person, but for one reason or another… well, you know. Beautiful & Breathtaking scenery. Thank you again.
Dixie, I was on parts of that trail in the Fall of 2019. Your video brought back fond memories. Upper Michigan, Northern Wisconsin, and Northern Minnesota are often overlooked when it comes to hiking. Major, well known trails get the most attention. I’m glad you were able to come “up nort” (Yooper speak) and see how beautiful it really is. Thank you for sharing! Best wishes always
Hi Dixie, so glad you made it to our Water Wonderland; surrounded by 4 of the 5 Great Lakes. Each of the 4 (Superior, Huron , Michigan & Erie) have their own temperaments and varying colors. You should consider a hike for the autumn colors. Cheers from the Tip of the Mitt !
Cinematic tour de force! So beautiful. That tree on the table supported by three columns looked like something out of a Tolkien story. I’ve seen videos of this trail but the two of you really made this amazing. The pictures and transitions were a pleasure to watch. Thank you!!!
I'm so happy you got to experience the beauty of pictured rocks! I'm canadian living in a border town to MI and that is by far one of my favourite trails in the UP! maybe one day you can come experience one or both of the coastal trails along Lake superior here in Canada!
Nothing like Lake Superior in my opinion, it truly another world up in the UP. Thank you for sharing this, you capture all the little moments that I also take time to experience when hiking. Just reminded me, I need to back to the UP asap! Even though I was there 2 weeks ago!
Dixie, I'm happy to see you finally made it to Michigan. I don't think you could have picked a better trail for a "first hike" in this state; the scenery is truly amazing. My buddy and I backpacked the very trail you just hiked and your video brought back a lot of familiar sights and good memories. I am a lifelong resident of Michigan and have backpacked most of the well-known parks in the state and they all have something amazing to experience. You should consider coming back some time to spend time on Isle Royale and also visit the Porcupine Mountains.
This was a beautiful trail! I’ve watched you earn your bachelor’s degree and your master’s in videography! Now, I see you are hard at work on your doctorate! Thanks for taking us along!
Happy to see you finally in my backyard. The UP is god-tier, but there is some cool stuff south of the bridge too--particularly on the Lake Michigan shore. If you ever get back this way, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness, and the Manistee River Trail are worth exploring.
Thank you for taking me with you. I am 80 and will never get to go there 😊 you have shown the beauty of it, and the music enhances same…I never knew this even existed.
I had (and achieved) the same goal - I visited all 50 states by my 50th birthday 2 1/2 years ago - Alaska was last! Unfortunately I didn't begin my love of backpacking until l returned from Alaska and discovered your channel. So now I need to visit so many states again and enjoy them from a hiking/backpacking perspective. Your videos always inspire me and make me smile.
Yes, I agree with the previous comment. You pull me into the vlog by paying attention to the detail you see along the way. You are really conveying the experience more than many other vloggers do who seem to be in a hurry and just give a general 20K foot view. Thanks!
Great videography.. lady slipper at 6:00.. common mergansers at 11:35. Ovenbird at 15:47. Glacial potholes at 18:02 and 18:25. Peregrine falcons at 19:19. Nice ending with the moon too!
That is some of the most beautiful footage you have ever recorded! And it’s near my hometown area. So glad you finally made it up here! We were backpacking in the Porkies that same weekend.
I’m so happy that you enjoyed your time in Michigan Dixie! Your videography is absolutely stunning! Especially the bumblebee flight… thank you for taking us along 😊
You are simply amazing - YOU, your filmography, gear info. and up close critter pics! Hope I never encounter one of those weird night creatures that showed up at ~15:20!
Glad you made it up and enjoyed it. Nothing like those bitter cold June days and nights. I've only seen Pictured Rocks from a boat. Nice to see it up close.
Thank you for bringing me back to this beautiful trail. This was 2012, my first multi day hike, with my wedding on Chapel falls, mid hike. I hope you enjoyed your time in Michigan, come on back anytime.
i am from michigan and absolutely love lake superior… it’s technically a fresh water sea! a lot of west coast/cali people who’ve visited told me that it reminds me of the pacific! thanks for visiting pure michigan! we love when people visit our underrated state!
@@melissaverdoni845 I love the Ocean too, but in a walk on the beach sort of way. I can’t swim in it, the salt stings my eyes like crazy, even if I nerd out and put goggles on. 🤣🤣🤣
Dixie you managed to catch and showoff just how beautiful Pictured Rocks really is! 💚 I'm a Michigander who has been transplanted to Minnesota. This trail was my first thru hike and will forever have my heart! Maybe your next adventure will take you to Minnesota's Superior Hiking Trail... 😊
Beautiful footage of beautiful scenery, accompanied (as always) by beautiful music! I can understand why you wouldn't want to leave. Thank you, for sharing another 28 minutes of wonder and serenity! I can't wait for "our" next adventure! Happy Trails!
Welcome to the Land of Hiawatha! That “boat” you saw was an ore freighter, not unlike the Edmund Fitzgerald. Chapel Falls and Chapel Rock are especially beautiful. Would recommend this park to anyone - even better in early October, with stunning fall color and recent frosts having killed off the very formidable insect population.
I’m so glad you’ve finally gotten to experience our vast home up here, thank you for capturing it and doing it justice! I’m so happy your time was great
I watched this video 2 hrs ago and haven't stopped thinking about how great the cinematography is. Thank you again for this wonderful interpretation, one of the best I've watched.
Glad you came to Michigan and the Upper peninsula. Now that you done part of the NCT in Michigan you should stop by one more time for the Michigan Challenge. 60 miles in three days. 20 miles of Manistee trail (drive to the next trail), 20 miles of the Fife Lake trail (Drive to the next trail) and 20 miles on the Jordan Valley trail. These are all loops and a large pack is not needed. These are all paired with the NCT and is just a fun challenge to do. Also, the NCT headquarters has a 100 mile challenge that is you do 100 miles in one year they have a patch and certificate for you. Glad you came and we hope that come back!
My 10-year-old son and I just did this and all 4 nights were amazing, partially thanks to your overview video. We were inspired to choose it because of this video - so beautiful. Thanks for the effort and care you put into making videos that inspire people to get out there.
I love this area! We were there earlier this month for our fourth trip and loved it just as much as the first time we went. The UP is amazing! Lake Superior is absolutely beautiful. Glad you enjoyed this trip and shared it with us.
Take out a second mortgage, and make sure you're up at 4am if you want to see anything. Parking lots are FULL at 8am in fall color season. Lodging is next to impossible anywhere near, and if it is available .. $$$$. But yes, very beautiful, and I highly suggest it.
Thank you for bringing me back to the U.P.! SO breathtaking. The 10pm sunsets are so weird!!! Michigan is my second home lol. That's where my husband and I go for most of our vacations. Such a beautiful state!
@@danielkinney8166 We got lucky with no rain, there were a couple groups going by chapel falls, but once we passed chapel beach we didn't see a single person after that it was great!
Even tho I enjoy them all, this was one of my favorite videos in a long time. The Great North Woods are so awesome this time of year.
You're the best at what you do. Thanks, again. Return this winter and hike the trail on snowshoes. The magic up here never ends.
Nothing like Lake Superior in my opinion, it truly another world up in the UP. Thank you for sharing this, you capture all the little moments that I also take time to experience when hiking. Just reminded me, I need to back to the UP asap! Even though I was there 2 weeks ago!
You definitely picked the best 42 miles that Michigan has to offer. Great video, thanks for taking us along.
It brings me so much joy to see someone I look up to so much getting to experience my favorite place in the world!
Greenstone ridge / Rock harbor on Isle Royale
And Lake of the Clouds / summit peak at the Porcupine Mts
@@basbh1782 Yes. Absolutely!!
That was absolutely stunning.
This was a beautiful trail! I’ve watched you earn your bachelor’s degree and your master’s in videography! Now, I see you are hard at work on your doctorate!
Thanks for taking us along!
Welcome to our great state of Michigan! I see found one of our many treasures.... 😊
This trail would be a perfect hammock trail it seams!
Great video, I think I will add this trail to my bucket list
Thank you for taking me with you. I am 80 and will never get to go there 😊 you have shown the beauty of it, and the music enhances same…I never knew this even existed.
I had (and achieved) the same goal - I visited all 50 states by my 50th birthday 2 1/2 years ago - Alaska was last! Unfortunately I didn't begin my love of backpacking until l returned from Alaska and discovered your channel. So now I need to visit so many states again and enjoy them from a hiking/backpacking perspective. Your videos always inspire me and make me smile.
This is my absolute all time favorite video you have made!!! So peaceful and calming yet entertaining. Amazingly wonder video! Thank you
That lake is truly superior!
You weave the soundtrack and video to make true cinematography ! NICE !!
I loved hearing a thrush when the chipmunks were coming to breakfast, and the hug at the end💕. I love seeing happy people!
Welcome to my Home State! Pure Michigan. All the BEST coastline in the USA…salt and shark free!❤️❤️❤️
i had a good laugh ,,, i love the ocean but you make good points. :)
@@melissaverdoni845 I love the Ocean too, but in a walk on the beach sort of way. I can’t swim in it, the salt stings my eyes like crazy, even if I nerd out and put goggles on. 🤣🤣🤣
I’ve watched everyone of your hikes and watching through your eyes this was my favourite hike. Cheers from Vancouver Island x
Dixie you managed to catch and showoff just how beautiful Pictured Rocks really is! 💚
I'm a Michigander who has been transplanted to Minnesota.
Depending on when this was filmed, it could have been that cruis ship. I saw it in Alpena a few weeks ago. It was in Superior before that.
Do you have a GPX trail map?
@@antsy_does I don’t, I’m sorry.
I’m so glad you’ve finally gotten to experience our vast home up here, thank you for capturing it and doing it justice! I’m so happy your time was great
Loved the video. I live in Michigan and this has been on my list!! Thank you for sharing
I never knew Michigan had such wonderful hikes. Definitely one to add to the bucket list. The bumblebee flight was awesome. Good stuff.
4:05 Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony 2nd Movement horn solo, my favorite solo I've ever played. Works so well for a sunrise.
I was just telling my wife we should check this place out. Looks awesome.
So great to see you in my home state! It seems like so many people don't know about how many incredibly beautiful trails we have.
I watched this video 2 hrs ago and haven't stopped thinking about how great the cinematography is. Thank you again for this wonderful interpretation, one of the best I've watched.
I adore Pictured Rocks! Love this beautiful video!
So spectacular 👍🏻
Great job on this
I love this area! We were there earlier this month for our fourth trip and loved it just as much as the first time we went. The UP is amazing! Lake Superior is absolutely beautiful. Glad you enjoyed this trip and shared it with us.
Wow. The patterns in all those rocks. Magical ! Can you imagine the Fall colors there? 😍
Once again, Dixie, wonderful job of capturing the beauty of nature.
As a horn player, I love hearing Tchaikovsky’s 5th in the background 😍
One of my favorite places on earth.
People don't realize just how beautiful Michigan is.
Go in the fall, better colors and less people.
🪶✨
@@danielkinney8166 Just went there last weekend, agreed it looks great in the summer but hiking in the fall was almost fantasy-like
@@danielvisintainer3352 autumn is my favorite time to hike.
Last month me & my dogs spent 3 weeks in a National Forest about 100 miles west of there near the Ironwood/Ashland area. Hiking the Pictured Rocks trail was just added to my bucket list.
