Jim Benton’s ability to perfectly encapsulate the experience of being a girl in middle school blows my mind. I genuinely don’t understand how a middle aged man so completely understands how my brain worked at age 13, down to the little things like drawing those cubes in my notes all the time. what a king

Bc they also went to school and were also teens and preteens. Boys have emotions and puberty and anxiety and different experiences too like they are also human. A human experience that can be shared is going to school and feeling weird or left out or confused or like everything is super huge and a big deal. Being a kid doesn't have to be about gender I totally get what you're saying, but I'm trying to explain that boys also went through a lot of the same emotions girls did, but they don't have the same outlet

I met Jim at a con and was telling him how much his works meant to me, he seemed a little distant and writing something, I was SHOCKED when he handed me a drawing of Jamie and signed it. I think he thanked me for being a fan and I like cried on the spot. He’s so sweet. Thanks for making our childhoods :)

Ah! You got an interveiw with the author, congrats!!! I think the thing he said about her being "better every 30 days" is really interesting- it seems like he had a focus on wanting to be subversive compared to other books like these for kids at the time- and i think he defintly succeceded. This book set itself apart by sounding so genuine. Like Nikki from dork diaries appeals to a more "girly" fantasy, but Nikki hardely feels like a real girl. Whereas Jamie is defintly some middle-schooler who does get better everyday. And i do think that is reminscent of actual children around that age. They DO get better everyday, they're learning to be okay humans

100% agree! as someone who grew up reading dork diaries nikki wasn’t relatable for me as a character? don’t get me wrong i remember loving those books but jamie feels more human for sure!

had to pause a bit early cuz brb crying at the recognition of how hard it is to get a job right now... my degree is in film, and i had big starry eyed dreams of post-college that sitting here now a year later with no offers or even responses period has been hard to cope with. i haven’t given up but i also have received so much “just try harder” advice from other ppl when im so close to burning out already. so seriously thank you for even validating my experience!! and in a video about my all-time favorite children’s series!! it’s so bad out here :(

i’m so sorry you’ve had to go through this. definitely keep trying! (though i won’t say “try harder” because the problem clearly isn’t that you aren’t trying hard enough) just know you aren’t alone i’ve seen people in many different careers struggling with this as of recently it’s devastating.

Don't slack off, even though it's not your final goal - even in the case that it has nothing to do with filmmaking, any job on Earth would be more open to hiring you if they can hear from your previous job that you had good work ethic and a willingness to go the extra mile.

I now use cursive handwriting for my own journal entries. I can still read the postcards, notes, and letters my family had sent me over the years because of said knowledge of cursive.

one thing i really appreciate about this series is that a lot of times when adults try to write for kids from the perspective of a kid they fall into the mistake of thinking kids just like and do random things for absolutely no reason. Jim Benton understands kids do the weird random shit they do because they have a thought process that is logical to their kid minds.
also on Jim saying some parents complain to him that jamie is a bad role model- i think dear dumb diary is at a reading level where the kids who can read it should be able to learn from the story. Jamie is very flawed but that’s the point, we learn through her thoughts and actions what makes someone a good friend. if a child who can read at that level is taking it at face value it’s an opportunity for them to learn that in art & life the lesson is not spelled out for us, we have to learn from the bad most of the time.

I learned cursive for a bit in third grade but I think they stopped teaching it in the middle of the unit so I didn't learn how to write all of the letters until I taught myself years later. Teachers giving up on teaching us skills seems to have been a trend though because I also didn't get to properly learn how to type and I probably don't know how to actually swim either.

Idk why but the section of her telling us about the worst kind of enemy being one who never does anything wrong made me think of Jaime Lannister, and then my mind spiralled and now I’m picturing an alternate universe fanfic of him in this universe being Jamie, Cersei as Isabella, and brienne as Angeline except super ugly instead of pretty, it makes a lot of sense, Cersei is evil but Jaime sees her as perfect, Jaime initially hates brienne but she’s honestly perfect and never does anything wrong and they become friends, and he’s kinda an ass but not quite evil just like Jamie
