    When it comes to Doctor Who, I'm just happy that we're still getting some kind of physical media representation for it in North America, regardless of its differences with the UK releases (lack of booklets, somewhat lower quality, certain extras being omitted for stupid reasons, etc.) My reason why is because I don't do importing, not even for Doctor Who.

    Love me some Multimedia Chronicles! I don't know jack about Dr. Who, but I'd listen to this guy talk about anything. He's got a great voice, always informative, and is always enthusiastic about everything he talks about! Love ya Z!

    Much like the release of the Chase before in the States, there is a scene missing which mentions the Beatles which is I can’t even describe how frustrating it is missing parts of a fully completed episode from the 60s but oh well rights what can you do

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dangit it, I knew I forgot to mention something! You're quite correct, we lost that scene AGAIN in our release. I actually have the Region 2 DVD of The Chase for specifically that reason. Might have to grab the non-limited UK Blu-ray set when it comes out for the same reason.

    One good thing about these sets with the missing episioides is that each “story’ is on its own disc so if (hopefully when) their is an animation or the episode is found and released we can just switch out disc (as long as the special features are ported over)

    I love the extras on these where they have classic Doctor Who alumni saying how rubbish they think the episodes are. It's absolutely the most British thing.

  • @elfang0r
    @elfang0r ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Fun fact; similar to the Ian segments for The Crusade, there was a loose cannon VHS release of Marco Polo, with an introduction by the actor who played Marco, in character doing the same thing.

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, that's the version I tend to watch. Just wish it was in higher quality, that recon is ANCIENT. Cool they got the man himself back to do some interviews and a new intro. There was also a fan made documentary about the making of it, interviewing much of the surviving cast at the time. And thank goodness for that, since the BBC seems to be dragging their heels doing ANYTHING with Marco Polo...

    • @elfang0r
      @elfang0r ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@zaranyzerak agreed, if the bbc ever do something with it, hopefully they include the intro and the documentary with it.

    Back in the nineties UK channel UK Gold use to show omnibus versions of stories on Saturday and Sunday mornings along with episodes of Blake's 7. That's how I saw stories of the first three Doctors I'd never seen before.

      @GamerWho ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep me too. I was just old enough to get into Who proper the year it went off air so UK Gold repeats were a godsend

      Interesting, sounds very similar to how it was presented over here on the various PBS stations. When Peter Davison's stories came over here, we got them in Omnibus format on the weekends on one station, with daily single episodes on another channel. Then at some point they brought over all the existing First and Second Doctor stories as well, showing them in Omnibus format. Some of those longer 6-7 part stories made for quite a lengthy single sitting viewing!

    I'd like to point out that episode 5 of The Dalek Invasion of Earth exists in its original master print. I say print, not tape since its actually a 35mm film print. Back then the 405-line system was the standard but the 625-line system also existed (not standard until the Enemy of the World). So that episode was shot in the 625-line system, the only 1st Doctor episode to be shot in that fashion, they scanned in the film print for the Bluray and it appears in higher quality than any previous video release. Really neat!

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well damn, thanks for the info dump! I actually didn't know most of that, other than yeah I meant to mention the 405-Line limitation for the quality when I was talking about the remastering but forgot. I DIDN'T know, however, that that Dalek episode was shot in 625! I haven't watched the stories proper yet, just skimmed them a bit, so I'll have to keep an eye out when watching that story!

      @@davidcallinicos1976 Part 6 of Power of the Daleks was shot on 625-line and stored on 35mm but we literally dont know what happened to it. Its just missing. Out of the 250 odd 60s episodes, 9 were on 35mm, and 7 survive. The aforementioned Power 6 and The Daleks episode 4 are missing. I dont think The Daleks 4 is in 625-line, i think it was stored to 35mm since Episode 1 was being remounted. My best guess anyway.

    Listening to you speak about watching omnibus editions on TV in the 80s reminds me of how I first saw Doctor Who as well. It sounds like you were living close enough to the border to watch these on a U.S PBS station, but I've been wondering for some time how other Canadians could catch the series. Did the CTV stations air Doctor Who at that time? And when the new series began in 2005, where could that be seen in Canada; was it only on cable? Hopefully you can fill in some of this info. Love your overview of these series sets and your other Doctor Who content. Much thanks!

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There were both Canadian and U.S. PBS stations, later on the show aired (with commercials!) on YTV during the 90s, but they didn't pick up the entire series, mainly the 80s ones and a selection from the 60s and 70s. During the 80s, I would see the Omnibus editions once a week on WNED 17 out of Buffalo NY, and TVOntario out of, well, Ontario showed the episodic versions of wherever they were in the run on Mon-Fri. I find it both funny and kind of personally special that several of the colour versions of 70s episodes were recovered either from those stations directly as NTSC broadcast tapes or as off-air recordings made by fans during the original PBS airings. (These airings were the episodic versions thankfully, from an earlier PBS run than when I was watching in the mid-80s)
      There was also channel 56, which was out of Detroit, but my cable service didn't get that one. Quite frustrating too as they were showing Blake's 7 for a while! Such a tease seeing that in the TV Guide but being unable to pick it up. It wouldn't be until the 90s when I was living in Selkirk and picked up stations from North Dakota that I finally saw Blake's 7, two episodes a week. At that time single episodes of Doctor Who were airing on YTV throughout the week, and Omnibus editions on the weekends on one of the PBS stations.
      On a similar note, YTV was airing Red Dwarf, with commercials and heavily censored, around that time and that's how I discovered it. A couple years later another PBS station, again one that I didn't pick up but could read the listings for in TV Guide, started airing the uncut episodes. A friend who lived in Winnipeg taped a couple for me so I could see it in its original uncut form. It wasn't until the VHS releases started coming out that I finally got to see it in all its uncut glory.
      The 1996 movie just aired on whatever the Fox affiliate in my area was at the time. The 2005 series first aired on Space (basically the Canadian sci-fi channel, but way better imo, especially for catalog titles - they showed EVERYTHING uncut, even accounting for commercial breaks) then a week later would be moved to streaming on Crave. We didn't get Doctor Who Confidential or Totally Doctor Who here, so I downloaded those from the internet.
      Hope that sheds some light! And big thanks for the Super Thanks!

      @@zaranyzerak Thanks for taking the time to explain; that was exactly the details I was curious about. Sorry for my ignorance, but I wasn't sure which channels could be received either over the air or on cable in those various Canadian cities. I've always enjoyed hearing the stories of how different people around the world first discovered their favorite fandoms.
      As I said, I also have fond memories of first discovering those omnibus broadcasts on my local U.S. PBS station: and later began collecting the VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray.
      Anyway, thanks again for keeping the Who appreciation going for both old and new fans. I'm looking forward to more reviews and closer looks as you continue to add to your collection.

    I really hate the North American sets. Cheap cases, no booklet (and the books are 40 pages each, with new painted artwork), all the lovely velcro TARDIS door interiors, unique art work for every disc. Not to mention the correct season titles. No-one EVER called Season 26 "Sylvester McCoy Season 3" etc
