The Boys and The Episode That Changed Everything | Video Essay

  • Throughout season three, The Boys not only maintained the quality from the seasons that preceded it, but surpassed them midway through it's run, with a single episode that managed to be entertaining, tense, surprisingly emotional, and incredibly important for the show's future, all at once.
    So... Let's talk about it.
    Songs Used (In Order):
    Overture - Coriolan , Op. 62 - Beethoven
    Gnossienne No.1 - Erik Satie
    Got Him - Black Mirror: Hated in the Nation OST
    The Passage of Emptiness - The End of Evangelion OST
    Occupied Thinking - Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion OST
    Cashmere Cannonball - No More Heroes OST

      It was an orgasmic climax, metaphorically speaking. I've never felt more hyped, excited, and have my expectations exceeded countless times over, in a show... doesn't matter if its a short, a series, a movie, anything that's filmed and put on a screen, until Herogasm. It was like a massive metaphoric ejaculation for me, and it felt so satisfying that it left me drooling, begging for more.

    I honestly think Homelander is one of the best-written and best-portrayed villains I've seen in a very long time. They managed to perfectly balance his cold, ruthless evil that made you hate and fear him, with the effects of his tragic, messed-up childhood that actually made you feel sorry for him in those rare moments when he showed that vulnerability. You could appreciate just how truly dangerous he could be if pushed, but also understand how he got there and how, in many ways, it wasn't his fault - he was as much - if not more so - of a victim of The System as any of the other 'supes.'

    I will never stop saying it: this season redeemed A-train. I am giving credit to the writers, but Jessie T. Usher taking off his sunglasses and looking Huey in the eye, you could see A-train's eyes quiver as the weight of everything he had done buries him. I DESPISED the character for years, and this episode made me clutch my pillow.

    Came across this video by accident. Not disappointed. I liked almost everything in that season. Internal conflicts among the Boys felt severe, the fight was really on when Soldier Boy arrived, as another really enjoyable character. I caught myself feeling sympathetic towards The Seven. Well, besides Deep. This guy is hilarious and stupid, especially after hearing "Deep Thoughts with Deep." I start to like A-Train and I sit here in a corner quietly hoping for redemption. Got hit by death of Noir, where I was almost certain of further character development. Homelander felt... human for once protecting his son, not caring about literally anything. And the worst thing is that while some issues got solved, nothing really concludes here. I think that the only thing that actually is finished - is Queen Maeve. Everything else is still moving forward. Everything that seems to be settled might as well come to ruin in the very first episode of another season. Glad to have stumbled upon The Boys. Hardly ever watch TV series, almost never enjoy one so much.
    As I said in the beginning, great video.

    Herogasm almost makes the end worse than I initially thought. the show went from a simmer to a rolling boil in herogasm. the steam was thick and hot and the bubbles were almost at the brim. then the last episode took it off the burner. what really changed between the first and last episodes of s3, besides everyone hating each other more, a train's heart failing and maeve losing her powers? and black noir "dying" (apparently he's seen in s4 leaks or a trailer, idk. maybe someone else in the suit/ flashbacks?) the biggest offense was putting soldier boy back in the freezer, meaning he was no more than a cheap plot device that can be thawed when needed again. it looked like things were going to change more drastically than they did by the end. I'm still hopeful for s4, though.

    Metaphors? The Boys? No way!
    Seriously though, good video, but The Boys community *has* to realize the obvious metaphors of the show. It's not just a show for the sake of being a show - it's not just spectacle and galore. It has intricate political symbolism that, whilst being subtly integrated, could not be more obvious. Corporations, imperialism, capitalism, America; it's all discussed and clearly portrayed throughout the show, and yet so many people miss the message. I think it's akin to Rage Against The Machine: an obviously anti-capitalist band which has its politics ignored, with people as far right as neo-nazis thinking their music is nothing more than "cool metal".

    • @TheSpearkan
      @TheSpearkan 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would want to criticise one point of the Boys politics in that it is extremely US-centric, it portrays anywhere outside the states as unimportant to what happens inside and all non-US characters work either to benefit themselves, their direct circle or an American organisation.
      I find this troubling as it bears the implication both that the rise of far-right elements in the US was done entirely within its borders and that there is nothing any other nation can or wants to do about it. There's a lot of indication that Russian troll farms, illegal funds directed to Republican elements and their pundits openly dining with far-right influencers yet the show dismisses it as irrelevant misinformation (The media calls Soldier Boy "Russian influenced")
      There is a whole lot that can be done to remedy this: statements from the UN, addresses or full reactions from foreign nations in response to certain acts. You don't need to pull focus away from US politics, but it helps to show that it isn't just detached from the rest of the world.
      Hell, I would absolutely love to watch a spinoff set in European nations to see how Vought influence affects non-US nations and how each individual EU nation (and the UK) responded to each of the major events. Would they try making their own supes or make special weapons against them? How does this affect relations with each other and the US?

    Why didn't the quality story telling of The Boys translate to it's spinoff Gen V. The biggest issue with Jen V is a crammed way too much story into six episodes I can't remember a series with six episodes in the first season ever being good so I guess unless there's eight at the bare minimum and I'll be skipping it.

    Hughie & Annie being at odds in the third season just matches the previous two seasons. It's one of the tropes the creative team relies on each year - the tension between these two is always close to snapping like a huge rubber band stretching out to deep space or maybe the homeworld of the Predators. Whatever, each season has a lovers' tiff between two of our main characters.

    I have some doubts about the future of the show, purely because of the last episode of season 3. When you compare the fight that took place in this episode to the one in 'Herogasm', you could say it looks almost cringe (especially in the moment when Starlight ascended I felt like I was watching some class C movie). Also I feel like the show could suffer from Netflix syndrome and get too many seasons only because it's successful. Hope I'm wrong.

    I felt like the blue hawk killing was completely out of character. At the core of it a train has always been a coward. Afraid of consequences so to take a leap like that even with his brothers injury just didnt feel earned. I feel like it would have been better with more development. Not w ton but maybe he let blue hawk go and next episode he was treated as a hero. Then his rise and the forgetting of his crimes would drive a train to kill him. That would have mirrored the Robyn accident and Hughies development and would have better set up a possible a train boys work together later down the line.

    • @thegreenreels
      @thegreenreels  ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I definitely see what you mean. Personally, I think that because A-Train had "accidentally" killed other people before (as Ashley mentioned; apparently, Robyn wasn't the first one), he was kinda desensitized, so when he saw a chance to get revenge on Blue Hawk, he let his bloodlust and all the pent up anger that was building up since then to take control.
      But again, I see your point, and I do agree a little more build-up would've made the moment even more impactful.

      @@ogs5276 I would agree with that except he couldn't run without his heart going crazy and he knew it. It felt like to me they were building to a real schism within the supes centered around A-train outside of the boys vaught conflict. Adding a wider conflict within the supes and having the crowds at a boiling point. That would have been real interesting to watch . Now it feels like A-train might become a inside man of sorts but with how many times he's betrayed the boys at this point would feel forced.

    One thing i don't like about this show is the deliberate liberal pandering, seriously, they never portray ANYTHING wrong with the left, ONLY with as if be about family, country and God is the worst possible sin one could commit, while defending sht like BLM as if theres no tomorrow... frankly, it is fkg annoying, and that's precisly the reason while i think Invincible is a far superior super hero show than the boys, because at least in Invincible they don't shit around about family at least.
