  • I love Columbia gear! But NOT this shoe! Video explains the rough, tough time I have had with the wear of this shoe! This shoe wore so comfortably, yet the wear and break in failed! Thin PUV leather tears, rips, dried out, soft bottom, etc...

    I got to say that 6months at 60 miles a week for this boot is damn good. Consider most hiking boots and trail shoes have to changed out at least that.

    • @chrissnyder4439

      Was thinking the same thing. 1400-1500 miles out of a pair of hiking boots is nothing to frown at. For the price, if they go 500-600 miles I'd be happy, if that.

      I’m glad they worked out for you. There are two types of leather used. Mine wore out and broke through quickly. I love Columbia, especially the clothing. This particular pair of shoes just failed for me! Cheers!!!

    Thanks for the review. I just bought the black on black a few days ago as daily wears. Very comfortable and the grip is fantastic. I will apply saddle soap once a week and see how much longer I can make them last. Here in Canada they cost $140 plus tax. I sure hope I can prolong their life. I go through shoes and boots faster than anyone I know. Ive trashed $400 blundstones in a few months.

    I could be mistaken, but I don't think the idea of this shoe is to wear them at a construction site everyday, wear them to Ikea, and then hike 60+ Miles a week in them over rough terrain. I'm pretty impressed with these shoes after hearing what you do with them, especially for the price...haha

    • @douglasbrown9625
      @douglasbrown9625  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Matthew you make some good points. I don’t wear them to construction sites I just work at foreclosure homes and we do trash out clean out things like that we also do all the shrubbery around the house and I do one or two of those a week you’re right they’re not built for those kind of things they’re great for IKEA a few walks here and there may be some trail hiking. But my point was just to show what they can do and what they can’t do that’s all it’s my opinion for what I do for work and I expressed that to say what their limits are that’s the reason for the videos are they nice comfortable shoes to wear on the town absolutely but that’s it thank you for watching thank you for coming to make some good points and people can make the decision based on that cheers

    So let me get this straight. You’ve had these 6 months and worn them at least 60 miles per week. So that’s conservatively 1500+ miles and they’re still wearable. How is that a fail? Guys that thru-hike the Appalachian Trail typically go through at least two pairs of boots in 2179 miles. And those are MUCH more expensive boots - like $150+. So again.... how is it a fail to get 1500 miles out of a boot that costs less than $100?

    • @douglasbrown9625
      @douglasbrown9625  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey there! These are not my only pair of shoes that I wear if I stated that I stated that incorrectly I simply said that I do wear them a lot or have worn them a lot. I did not get to 1500 miles on the shoes, clearly I did not do that, I switch them up constantly. I will have to check to see how many miles I have on the shoes but clearly they failed after a short period of time. Thank you!

    Doug, I used to be a Columbia Redmond hiking shoe evangelist. I tried to get everyone to buy those shoes --- both the Low and the Mid.
    The shoes were like an instrument to me --- like an extension of your body or skin.
    The sole lugs were very small-scale (vis-a-vis the large sole lugs on that model you reviewed), which really increases your foot sensitivity and positional awareness.
    But the best part about Columbias was the EVA midsole foam. It was so flexible and springy and cushiony. I actually used to also wear them as running shoes. In about 2014 the entire running shoe industry went away from good EVA sole material and went to these foams that feel like wooden blocks, and it ruined my knees. So I tried running in the Columbia Redmonds and it was incredible. I could resume running every day and get no knee pain --- due to that EVA foam.
    Then in mid-2019 (after you posted this review) they cancelled the original Redmond and came out with the V2. It had HUGE lugs on the sole, and used their new midsole foam, Techlite.
    That was it. They had ruined the shoe. It is now stiff as a board, you get know flexibility, no energy return, no knee-protecting cushioning. They actually make the bottom of my feet hurt. You can't bend them. They went the direction of the running shoe industry. They BLEW IT.
    They eventually came out with Redmond III, but that sucks too. So this year they brought back the original Redmond design, but they blew it because they didn't return to the old, original EVA material that was so great. They replaced it with this Techlite crap.
    I don't think they ever consult customers when they design shoes. Idiots.

    Great review! I'm from Brazil, there aren't real reviews of hiking boots here. With taxes and currency value, it's very expensive to buy a good hiking boots, even "cheaper" ones. ( 1 Real = 0,18 Dollar, plus taxes = the same as you buying a 200 dollar boots). Would you recommend this boot for terrain with lots of roots and rocks, suede model, or would another one in the same price range be better, like the Redmond?

    So you walk 60 miles a week in them and you say they last you a couple months. Why are you complaining then thats pretty good life you got out of them.
    What the hell did you expect? Did you think they would last a lifetime? Damn for crying out loud, you're going to have to buy new shoes every once in a while so quit whining about durability.
    I do moderate to heavy hiking with some high incline/gain in pretty rough terrain and have these boots. I already wore them many times and these hikes are 6+ hours easy. They are comfortable which is a huge plus when doing any distance hiking compared to other boots and I havent had any tear issues or even heard of them. These things are very waterproof which some boots in other brands claim to be , but you find out the hard way they arent.
    Plus the grip on these is some of the best. I've tried many brands ofhiking boots, but I would have to say Columbia makes the best hiking boots out there comfort, durability, style, lightweight, waterproof etc. You probably use them as a work boot then have the nerve to say they tore and acting like they just shredded out of nowhere. LOL...you make me laugh.

      Hello and thank you for your reply! There are some good points made; if you watch any of my other videos you will know that I don’t walk 60 miles in one style shoe, I mix them up! Since COVID, I don’t do that mileage anymore. The shoes for me were just OK but this is my review for what it’s intended for and if you follow me you would know that the shoes I wear are strictly for what my intended purpose is. That is, that I do work in them so my review was based on what level do they perform and what level do they break down according to my work level, it’s just my viewpoint that’s all; I hope you don’t take offense because you sounded like you perhaps did, it’s just my review. Yes, I work hard, And taking into account the published advertising for the shoes I try to see what level they perform. Thank you for your viewpoint! Cheers!

      @@douglasbrown9625 No offense taken, its just when you said you walk 60 miles it sounded like you expected these shoes to last the rest of you life. It actually made me laugh.
      Made me wonder what you did in them because I have used and abused these shoes and they held up , I bought another pair since, But if I had to give biggest pro about shoe it would be the fit and weight. Biggest con would be they look so good you dont want to ruin them...lol.
      So yeah, shoes are one of those things that vary so much from person to person that doing any review on shoes you knew you were going to catch some crap. Anyway, hope you get to walk many more miles in these shoes or others and good day to you.

It's sad that Columbia has used their brand to sell such poorly made boots.

    Obviously you worked this shoe hard, living in Florida I'm guessing you used it for a work boot, which it is not intended to be used for. Using these "hiking boots" as a "work boot" would never be recommended. BTW these boots are made of genuine"coated leather" not synthetic leather. The leather is impregnated with polyurethane finish, best of both worlds and most likely for waterproofing. It also has a poly omnitech membrane (like your vest) as well. This is all done for durability, water resistance and weigh savings! If you read the 123 materials label you will see that the upper is indeed mostly genuine leather with synthetic and suede accents and of course fabric interior. I am an avid hiker and have years of hikes all over the world with several other boots costing twice as much from Oboz, Merrell, Vasque and Salomon. This boot is not designed as a work boot! It's for hiking and it works great for that and lasts perfectly as good as the above costing much more. I live in the mountains of WNC and hike hundreds of miles a year, hard terrain miles. These outlasted my Merrell Moabs ll's pigskin and so far as long as my old Oboz Sawtooth. They were just a waterproof as those I mention. My Salomon X Ultra Mid 4 GTX, fabric tore at the toe bed after 5 months and they would not warranty them. So for the money they are hard to beat for hiking. My Moabs have terrible soles and no footbed protection so you feel every little pebble. Oboz EVA soles rotted and cracked away, Oboz would only give me a 30% credit towards new. Not sure of Columbia's warranty, cause they are still going strong after 14 months and a hundred miles. They are among the most comfortable I've ever worn in 40 years of hiking. Are they the best boot out there, certainly not...but for the value, can't be beat. It has been independently tested by people who don't sell them as of of the top ten boots, for comfort, durability and value.

    • @douglasbrown9625
      @douglasbrown9625  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, good response. I never said it was synthetic leather. I always open my videos and describe exactly in detail what I do for a living and I don’t expect them to hold up to sometimes the harsh environments I exposed them to. these videos are for people like me who live on a budget and they’re looking for a good shoe and I describe what I do for a living and how the shoes react. It is simple as that. I’m not an expert I don’t take money from my videos they’re not monetized it is strictly some dude doing work buying shoes and see how they react that’s it. Thanks for the response but again I’m just a chill dude doing a job wear in the shoes and see how they react that’s it. it’s up to the buyer to decide how they wanna wear them use them or abuse them. Cheers!

    • @nellatrab
      @nellatrab ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@douglasbrown9625 Thank for the reply....I take no offense to anything you said...but you stated numerous times they were PU leather, by definition that is a synthetic with no animal leather. Here is the definition (copied from a knowledgeable resource) "PU leather is a synthetic product, created by applying a layer of polyurethane to a base layer of another material and not animal based. This process initially made PU leather popular as an animal-free alternative to traditional leathers of any kind, aligning with the growing consumer demand for vegan and cruelty-free products. It is completely different from a cow based coated or impregnated leather." Another name for PU leather is Pleather.
      So bottom line is saying these shoes are a failure because you abused them could be said for almost any product. BTW Camp Dry is mineral spirits and or naptha and should not be used on poly coated leathers because it breaks down the poly coating causing the leather to rot, it is only for oil tanned leathers. Wishing you a better day to chill tomorrow.

      It is not so much that they are not leather, they are, they just use subpar leather and extremely thin at that. They are not built to be rugged however they are very comfortable and just like I said they are best used for weekend jaunts here and there not for hard work it’s just a review for what I do not necessarily the shoes themselves but for the work that I do and what they’re intended for. For true work boots, there are plenty to choose from. I tend to review hiking shoes and for the work that I do how they hold up it might be different for you. Cheers!

      @@douglasbrown9625 My bad. I must apologize. I said I was looking to buy a pair of new boots. But, I didn't state what kind of boots I was looking to buy. I live in NE PA and the Appalachian trail is a stone throw away from my house. It's the dreaded "rocky" section every Appalachian trail book describes as the worst part of the trail. Since the terrain is very rocky I usually like a full leather boot. I mainly do day hikes on the trail. Because of your review of the Ridge Plus II, I decided not to buy them because how thin you said the PU was. I ended up purchasing a pair of Keen Pyrenees. The squared off toe box was one of the selling points I liked. Each shoe is 20.8oz. Not bad for a leather boot! They were $180 but I searched the internet for a coupon code and found one for 35% off! I got them for a little over $120 with tax and free shipping! One site's description of the boot stated to go one size bigger. I ordered my true size and the boots feel pretty good. I wore them around the house for a bit and they will need some breaking in but that bigger toe box is very comfortable for my feet. I'm looking forward to trying them out on the trail. Hope they last as long as my Merrell waterproof leather boots. I bought those in 2006 and they finally fell apart two years ago. Literally fell apart while I was walking in them. Thankfully I wasn't on a trail! LOL!

After just two wears, large cracks appeared on the vamp, near the toes, of the boots. The cracks are deep and appear to go all the way through the material. The Columbia Bugaboot Plus III is a good shoe. Being mainly man made can feel stiff and perhaps not as comfortable as others. Although the Newton Ridge Plus II did not hold up well, the Suede version has, and it is really inexpensive. The suede has has performed much better than expected with no tears or rips, and I have re introduced waterproofing spray to it multiple times. The other Columbia shoe is the infamous Redmond... been around for a while and performs quite well. Both shoes in your budget and perform well. Thank you for writing and cheers to you!
