    Thank you for your honest perspective on running a non profit organizations executive director position board members duties have to be careful treating board members as employees it can create conflict of interest they need to concentrate on board duties not interoffice duties

    The board chair and executive director are the same person for many startups. I never "transitioned" to be a staff member. I was the founder, board chair, and functioned as the director for a long time with no pay. Eventually I got a part-time salary as the director. I put so much sweat into the organization. I am not about to hand board seats over to other people just to possibly be fired one day. I feel like these people on TH-cam just did a lot of googling and don't know much about the reality of it themselves. If you're a small startup, you do not need to leave the board to be paid. Most small nonprofits have a founder, board chair/president, and director who are all one person.

      Hi! If you watch my other content then you would know I'm not one of those "people on TH-cam" who do a lot of googling. While that's your experience to be paid and sit on the board, that is not best practice. Thanks for sharing your perspective but as I advise everyone, do you research before you do things that may place you in legal jeopardy. Since you're not the owner of the nonprofit corporation, you can't make unilateral decisions. I understand that's not what you want to hear, but others need to know what is advisable by experts and the IRS.

    What if you don't want to be on the board from the start of your non-profit

    • @BossonaBudget
      @BossonaBudget  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You don't have to be on the board at all if that's not something you want to do. It's an individual decision.

    In that case it's best if I stay out of the board from the beginning and take a contractor or employee position and get paid right?

      There’s no one perfect scenario. If that’s your preference it can definitely work.

    I’m a bit confused still.
    I want to start an adult day program. I would be on the board. First I will have to do work to get it going to eventually I’ll have enough clients and have an income to support staff. From there I wish to transition to full time board and oversee all that operates within this program. I can’t get paid as being on the board?

    • @BossonaBudget
      @BossonaBudget  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Board and staff are two different positions. Board members oversee the overall organization and staff handle day-to-day. You can’t oversee yourself as the Exec Director if that’s what you wish to be.
