Hi Jess, I came on here because I am in the process of doing the same thing. I've been foster parent to teen girls for over 10 yrs and my city is in need of a place for them to stay. They currently have them sleeping on the floor in the DHS building
I am a foot soldier! I have been homeless over two years now, I have been sober for 20 Plus years now! I am looking at this problem head on, and taking homeless head on, the root causes from addiction which in the homeless community is not the key problems of homeless. Homeless have unhealthy brain do to unhealthy diet, then unhealthy hygienes. I understand if I can gain the homeless respect and trust by giving them nutritious meals to help heal their brains, washers and dryers so they can wash their clothes, and showers to gain back their respect for their own selves, then it shall be downhill to help them kick their addictions. Meanwhile or shelter will be good quality canvas 10x10 tents four season of course. Now I've been talking to the homeless about my plan, some would say if you get this started I will follow you some are not sure, and some well I don't know where they stand because they don't know where they're stand because nobody has offered an actual hand up. That's what I can provide. So me and a friend have been working on the paperwork and everything and we decided that we or the organization or foundation I'm not going to take any kind of pay for all monies will remain in the foundation so that we can move this foundation in different areas when this one is started and going well. Me I will continue to be a foot soldier amongst the homeless. That's the purpose that God is giving me to do this journey.

I just had to come back and say thank you again. I downloaded the check list and ordered the nonprofit startup. I'm finishing up my masters this year and have been in corporate 34 years and finally ready to boss up and start a transitional living home for women who have children. I'm passionate and know the road won't be easy BUT manageable and I'm excited about the lives that will be touched. Virtual hugs and blessings!!!!

We have Wes watkins which is a reservoir here in Mcloud and people in the area can camp very low cost cheaper far cheeper that a hotel and near us in Choctaw is a KOA they also provide showers and it's just a little over $100 per week to pitch a tent there

I really need help starting this organization or should it be a foundation. I have a friend who has her organization but it is mostly for the big city here Oklahoma city. In Oklahoma most people here don't have cars and my little town especially Mcloud Oklahoma has really nothing here to help our community. Now Harrah does have food pantries etc. Anyway I don't have $ but I do want to help people
Have you started thinking others who would be supportive of the mission too? It's possible to start with little to no money but you need supporters to do that.

So I monthly go to the grocery spend a couple hundred of dollars buying food to give to the homeless people near to my neighborhood (Downtown Area) I know that to do that I don’t need an organization but this is the beginning of something that I believe I’m going to make bigger. So what’s the best option because I just want to like register a company or something just for that. Thinking about the future that I can say my charity company has officially years of registered. I don’t know if you understand… Should I just go to the website to the IRS and create a non profitable organization right ? Greetings

Yes, you can donate to any nonprofit - you don't own it so it's like you're donating to another entity just like any other. That's why you have a board to protect any conflicts of interest

I have some real estate as in vacant lot in a cold north in Lancaster Ohio. I want to start a homeless shelter, it's especially needed here because the cold really hurts and it's illegal to be homeless, slash it's hard to keep anything to survive in the cold because the government comes destroys all insfastrure anyone can build without permit aka 120 sq ft building.
How do I open up my own homeless shelter without government funding? That is one of my goals in life. It has to be without government funding or aid. When the pandemic was going on the government was shutting down homeless shelters all across America. I want to see to it that the government does not have the legal right to shut down my homeless shelter.
I would identify the funding streams that will allow you the sustainability you need. Other options would be sponsorship, donations, earned income, etc
This is extremely helpful. I am sorting out my thoughts and creating an action plan for building a safe haven for homeless youth/foster children.
