I myself have a 2020 Mercury 3.5 hp. Four stroke and I am having issues with my plastic prop ventilating and spinning up on revs . I am also having carburetor issues at low idle...it sometimes does and sometimes doesn't idle it cuts off. All on all I hope that this will help my West Marine 10 ft. Tender. Thanks for the demonstration.🙂
The Tohatsu version of this outboard at least has a inline filter inside the hose which you can't see! If you try to fit an inline filter it won't run as it doest have a fuel pump to pull the fuel through I tried it and it simply cut out and wouldn't run.

This is absolutely false. The venturi is larger and the carburetor is certainly not the same as the stock 3.5hp. Other customers have clocked higher speeds after the upgrade and also frequently comment on the acceleration improvement talked about in this customers video. Also, if your name is Terry Kannedy, then you never purchased this kit from us. I see no orders under your name.
I have seen a lot of comments of this motor not idling smooth. One thing I have found is that this motor does not like Star-Tron very well. If your mixture of Star-Tron is too rich, at idle it will almost stall and then jump up in RPM's to a high idle. Use Star-Tron very sparingly and that will solve some of the idle problems.
I've heard the carb on the 3.5 has problems, but on the 2.5, no problems. I'm leaning towards a 2.5. I was curious too about the plastic prop, and you answered my question. I plane to put this on a 12ft jon my buddy has sittin in his yard. The only water his boat has seen in years, is when it rains..

Hopefully the upgrade will fix that hesitation. You mentioned the cause could be to lean on fuel/ air mix. Should i try to increase 1/2 turn on pilot (2 turns from stop). Also noticed the pilot mix adj screw is on the motor side, can you adjust with the tank raised from the mount in order to hear idle vs pull carb off again, if that makes sense? Glad to hear the upgrade could be the fix. You produce great content videos & thanks for the help.

No, I've haven't had any overheating issues. I have made a 10 mile trip up the Navasota River with 3 people in the boat with no problems. Make sure the pump is working properly. You should have a strong stream of water when idling. If not replace the water pump impeller. Not that you have; But, Never run the motor out of the water. Not even for a few seconds. This will immediately damage the water pump.
Hey I bought this kit looking for more speed but I had no difference. I know you weren’t looking for speed but did you notice a increase in speed when you were testing
Yes , we had a slight increase in speed. However, the speed increase came when we moved the payload forward to better trim the boat. Check out the video I did on trimming this small boat. It really helps. Thanks for the comment and watching.
Yes. But the aluminum props performance is much better. For me it made a big difference. I have more Thrust not speed. The motor doesn't load up like it did. I'm sure others will have different results, but for me it was a very good upgrade. Thanks for watching. Don't forget to subscribe...

Hi, great video, thanks for them. I bought this upgrade to my tohatsu from the store you recommend. Thanks
No, mine did not have any wobble. It fit very well on on the shaft. You my need to add a Brass Sleeve to take up the slack in the prop. Look and see if the Old Plastic Prop has a sleeve in it. You may be able to change it out. Thanks for watching, I hope this helped.

What bore size is the 6hp carb? This kit 5hp carb is 18.9mm same as the 3.5hp but the inlet manifold measures 21.5mm so potentially more gains to be had.
I have the tohatsu 3.5 .I have a 7 foot Inflatable boot.. my top speed is only 5-6 mph. Is it because it's an inflatable with an inflatable keel. Should I be getting better speeds. I'm still using the stock prop.
Could be. Inflatable boats have a lot of flex in the water. This creates drag which slow the boat down considerably. Most inflatable boats designed for outboards normally have a wooden keel.
Do you think if I just put the aluminum prop on it would help it. I’m inexperienced with outboards and I was wondering if just the aluminum prop would help
I’m a little skeptical of this upgrade. The 5hp Mercury is almost 50cc’s larger than the 3.5 in terms of displacement. Adding a 5hp carb is not going to increase the displacement. I also think the prop has less pitch, in of itself will increase rpm’s under a load. I would like to buy an aluminum prop to replace my plastic one, but I will stick with the 7.0 pitch. I really believe the upgraded carb does nothing for engine performance, and the increased rpm’s under load has everything to do with the reduced pitch prop….IMO
Thanks for a very informative video. I'm trying to decide between this motor, the Yamaha 2.5 or Suzuki 2.5. I prefer the Mercury on paper, even though the motor is larger and heavier. The extra 1 hp seems worth it, and this kit you installed makes it all the more appealing. My main concern is the high number of negative reviews on these smaller Mercuy/Tohatsu motors due mainly to finicky carb and fuel issues. Seems to be a serious reliability problem even for owners who take extra precautions. Have you experienced any of these issues, and do you think the upgraded carb effectively addresses the problem? Also, have you found that the kit improved midrange smoothness and/or noise to any extent? Still liking the motor overall?
The stock carb isn't jetted very well. But the engine does run OK on it, but it has a hesitation on low end that's very annoying. I recommend the 3.5 Mercury and the upgrade kit for it. The Upgraded Carb was a definite FIX. It made an major change in my motors thrust and top end RPM's. I'm very happy with it. Thanks for the comment...
@@LifeisaHighwayRV So you got to wonder why Merc isn't smart enough to know that and sell the motor with that carb, avoiding the pitfalls of the original.
Yes it fixed the acceleration issue. The motor runs very smooth. And Yes I'm still liking the motor overall. The motor now has throttle response from 3/4 to full. Before it had no change...
The Kit comes with a larger Carb and Aluminum Prop. The concept is this will produce the same Thrust as a 5 HP. All I can say to you is, the Kit worked very well on my outboard. It made a very noticeable difference in the performance of the outboard. I am very pleased with the outcome of this upgrade. Carbs response better and the Prop is a major improvement over the stock plastic prop.
Thanks for great tutorial! Bought the upgrade kit and changed but got no difference whatsoever va original carbirator and prop. Tried adjusting throttle but not better. Changed back no change. And bCk to new again, still no change. Do you have any idea why I can’t see any change or what I could try to adjust?
I'm not sure. Contact "Ready Set Boats", They have more than 1 kit and may have a 2.5 conversion kit. Wish I had more info for you. Thanks for the question.
I have a 2.5 and a 3.5. I wanted to do this 5hp upgrade to the 3.5 I have but the 3.5 is WAY older whereas my 2.5 is almost new..... When I read all of the specs on the 2.5 vs. the 2.5, EVERYTHING besides the carburetor is the exact same specs as the 3.5. Pistons, bore, crank... everything.... so couldn't I theoretically install one of these 5hp carbs on the 2.5 and get the same result as you did? I can't seem to figure out ANYTHING that would prevent the 2.5 from handling the 3.5. I've actually used the 3.5 carb on my 2.5 (too lazy to clean the 2.5 so I swapped it for the 3.5 in a pinch) and it ran stronger.... so I'm thinking this 5hp carb will be even better. Thoughts? Also, I already have an aluminum prop because the kelp ripped my plastic one to shreds...
I'm not 100% sure on this. However, putting the kit on the 2.5 may not have the same results. You can try it and if it doesn't work or provide the best results, just put on the 3.5 and try that. Sorry I couldn't provide the answer you needed. But I don’t have any experience with the 2.5. Thanks for the comment and watching. Don't forget to subscribe 😉
@@Arian_orta Sure did! Granted, it's only 1 pony added, which in the water isn't a huge difference. But I did notice it on a glass water no-wind comparison. What I'm doing now is drilling out the main jet .0001 at a time, popping it back in and testing for more balance but comparing all other things like acceleration smoothness, idle, proper plug burn and of course top end, making sure to keep RPMs in mind. I'm also still using the stock 7p plastic prop that came on the 2.5 platform. I believe it's the same prop that comes on the 3.5 anyway.
I'm still 50/50 on my aluminum prop and the plastic one. Broke one and now using the plastic one that came on the new 2.5 but I have the aluminum one on standby.

"Ready Set Boats". You can buy just the prop from them or the kit.
Do you think if I just put the aluminum prop on it would help it. I’m inexperienced with outboards and I was wondering if just the aluminum prop would help
Yes. The aluminum prop will help, but you won't get the increase in HP.
The prop in my kit was marked 118×115 meaning the pitch is now 4.1/2" instead of 7" so it will help tremendously.
Have you noticed much difference in fuel consumption?
Very little. Not enough to be concerned about. Thanks for the comment...
Great job
@@LifeisaHighwayRV With the same prop? It seems like it was the prop that changed your top-end RPM.
Since changing the carb. The motor runs great. I've had NO issues so far. The hesitation issue i had is completely gone.
I would like to understand how you can manage to upgrade a 3,5 hp 87cc to a 5 hp 123cc , just swapping the carburator. It's a scam.
Carbs response better and the Prop is a major improvement over the stock plastic prop.
its because it IS a scam and you wont be able to return it once you try it. STAY AWAY
finally someone has some sense
@@the_old_standardso every 2barrel carb that was changed out to a 4 barrel Holley carb was a scam too for added horsepower?

Is there any way to upgrade a 1997 mercury 5hp 2 stroke to 6hp?
Contact Ready Set Boats and see if they offer an upgrade. I'm not sure. Thanks for the comment.
Can you tell me more about what changes your not seeing. Email me: rv.lifeisahighway@gmail.com I'll see if I can help you resolve your issue.

Zero improvement here too. $180 wasted.
I have a 2020 2.5 mercury will the same set up work?
I'm not sure. Contact "Ready Set Boats", They have more than 1 kit and may have a 2.5 conversion kit. Wish I had more info for you. Thanks for the question.
Where i can buy those things for my mercury?
Ready Set Boat
Bravo 👍
@@LifeisaHighwayRV I'll purchase one and let you know. I mean... What the hell? Can't hurt.... much...
@@terrykannedy8154did it work for the 2.5? I also have a 2.5
@@Arian_orta Sure did!
Can you please give information on who makes this kit and where to purchase it ? Thanks

You can find them on AliExpress as well. They are manufacturer in China so their suppliers sell to AliExpress shops as well. Much cheaper same quality.
@@mitchelleersel $40 or $220 is much cheaper indeed.
What's the diameter of the new carb compared to the old?
Th e carb is physically the same size. The diameter of the venture is a few mm larger. As to how many mm I'm not sure. There was no information as to the size or mm carb it actually is. But, it is noticeably larger.
@@LifeisaHighwayRV Thanks. It's just there are various sized Mariner/Mercury/Tohatsu carbs on Ali Express in various sizes at about £20 - $27. They also have the alloy props at £10 - $14. Works out a bit less than the conversion kits. Had a brand new Mariner 3.5 delivered today!

I have a Mercury 2.5 will that work on mine? The only difference in my 2.5 and that 3.5 is the carburetor.
Check with Ready set Boats. I'm not sure. Thanks for the comment...
Yes it's perfect for the 2.5hp. Better off buying the 6hp carb from them and the prop separately. The carb is a Chinese Mikuni clone which seems to work well. I'm using it as an aux engine so I also changed the decals from Tohatsu to Suzuki.

No.

what are the dimensions of the propellor?
I do not know. If you contact (Ready Set Boats), I'm sure they will have that info. Sorry I couldn't answer that question for you, but thanks for watching.
Same as a 5 hp propellor?
I'd say yes. But it's also an aluminum prop. So that in itself is a big improvement. You can order just the prop. However; the carb upgrade really helps this little outboard.
