I was stunned by how much I loved this movie. Queen Latifah's performance was incredible. I have listened to Bessie Smith's music for a long time. I love the honesty in her voice. I did wonder why they didn't feature more of her music in the movie. Since I have a lot of Bessie's music any way, I was okay with knowing I knew her music, but the performance and the way the story was told without any apology just blew me away. There was a gentleness about the hardness. Her life was what it was. Oh, and Mo'Nique was extraordinary as Ma Rainey. When I read August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, I guess I didn't know enough history to get a real sense of her, but Mo'Nique really opened her up for me. Finally, I love the cinematography. This movie was beautifully shot. The scenery enhances what I meant by the gentleness of the hardness. I just Loved this movie.
See I am a big fan of the amazing Billie Holiday and I loved when she would tell about how much she loved Bessie Smith and how much Bessie Smith inspired her. Bessie Smith is an amazing legend and I would like to thank her for inspiring my idol Billie Holiday.
Awesome! Ma Rainey putting Bessis Smith on is like Mahalia Jackson hooking up Rev. Shirley Caesar, or Ruth Brown hooking up Aretha Franklin; that was a major collaboration. You picked the right ones baby in getting two strong actresses and entertainers in 'Dana' and Monique. They laid the smack down.
Pinky Senoelo I know . Never showed what happened to her in the end. People need to know the pain and agony she went through on how she died. Tell the whole story. Learn things people!
There was a kind of a tender, sunset about the ending of the movie. I can only guess that the decision to end the movie showing Bessie as still being hopeful was an artistic one.

+Dash Riffraff Didn't she bleed to death from a car accident because she was in the segregated South and couldn't get treated?
Your right. But many don't know the true story.
