Loved Megha pushing back on Matt's comments regarding women's breastfeeding choices. I love that it's now 'fed is best' Theres so many reasons why women cant always breastfeed. Way to go Megha!

Sometimes supplementation is helpful when breastfeeding isnt going well. Its not all or nothing when it comes to formula/breastmilk.

Read the ingredients in formula. Traditional villages use wet nursing so other mothers that are also nursing would help other mothers that were falling short on milk production.

Man Matt, judgemental much?? I exclusively breastfed my son. My daughter-in-law almost starved our grandchild because she simply did not make enough milk. She worked with a lactation specialist. She was in a breastfeeding group. EVERYONE was "breast is best". She nursed constantly. She would pump for an hour and would get an ounce. This went on for months. She was constantly shamed for thinking about formula. You could see the babys ribs. She finally went with formula and the baby absolutely thrived. Women do NOT need men speaking up and giving rules about breastfeeding. If you can't do it yourself then offer an opinion and back the heck off. Geeze.

If only it were as simple as making "a rule" that you are going to breastfeed your baby. Your comments are offensive to women who desperately wanted to breastfeed but couldn't and had to deal with a lot of guilt and shame around it. Appreciate Megha trying to set him straight.

  • @JesikuhBlah

As Postpartum Doula and recent first time mom who was unable to nurse so I exclusively pumped for 8 months, the way Matt was talking about breastfeeding was absolutely inappropriate. Postpartum depression, low supply issues, insufficient glandular tissue, and many other issues can come up--or it may just be best for a woman's emotional well being to stop breastfeeding. It is best for the baby to be fed, of course, but we all know that. What is often forgotten--and what makes Matt's comments hurtful--is nobody thinks about the mother. The mother needs support to breastfeed as for many it is incredibly difficult. If you were unable to breastfeed or it didn't go the way you wanted it to, you are still an amazing mom. Feed your baby and feed yourself.

I was low carb for 6 years before getting pregnant... read the Real Food for Pregnancy book and thought yeah totally how I already eat, why would I change this for pregnancy?! I also purchased prenatal workouts that I intended to do 3x/week. And then I got pregnant... and was sick (nauseous and vomiting and food aversions)... I'm almost 32 weeks and this is all still going strong. I try to go for walks. I try to eat nutrient dense when I can but it's SO HARD. I definitely eat way more gluten free toast, fruit, and crackers than I've ever eaten in my life because it's all I can stomach. Oh and cheese. So much cheese.

I am just over 35 weeks & my intention was to avoid all processed foods & sugary stuff (I also was a supporter of Western A Price guidelines & generally consider low-carb/keto the best approach for most people) & continue working out at the gym & do yoga every day... well that all went out the window! Between extreme insomnia leading to constant exhaustion & low mood, & extreme pelvic pain meaning zero walking, let alone actual proper exercise, I have had to be suuuuper forgiving of myself for having a nowhere near what I would consider "optimal" pregnancy.
Thankfully my little boy is kicking my guts so at least he seems to be strong & active!! I do wish I could have done things differently but I also believe our babes are pretty resilient & will take the nutrients they need...even if it means depleting our own bodies' reserves, which I am super glad about!

Some people, such as myself, wanted to breastfeed more than almost anything and I was unable to (believe me when i say i tried absolutely every single thing possible to breastfeed and was beyond devastated that my body wouldn't produce milk). I too had researched and was following a Weston A Price way of eating for a long time and was fully educating myself on how to prepare for labor with my Doula as well. Breastfeeding had always been a dream of mine and it was a crushing blow that I couldn't breastfeed. I had a traumatic pregnancy and was misdiagnosed with serious medical issues I did not have as well as being dropped by insurance and multiple Dr's during pregnancy due to our horrible health insurance. There is more trauma than I could ever explain in a youtube comment surrounding my pregnancy and postpartum. I experienced severe PPD and anxiety and had to be hospitalized and almost lost my life. The discussion around breastfeeding in this video was extremely disappointing to hear to say the least. As Megha said, you don't know whats happening unless you are in that body... same applies here. I am happy for you that you sustained 2 healthy pregnancies and successful childbirths with breastfeeding as well, but please be considerate of the fact that you might not have a clue of what some women go through. I know I didn't before I experienced the most horrific time of my whole life surrounding what should have been the most joyous time.

Apparently women with breast reductions can have the save issues as those with IGT like me! I only found out because of a support group I’m in. The difference is that my breasts didn’t fully developed so I only gave a few glands. And for you they likely severed them so we’re basically in the same boat. Some women in the group were able to breastfeed but most weren’t :( and unfortunately most were told by the surgeons that it wouldn’t stop them from breastfeeding. So sad most weren’t even informed because I betting a ton would have waited on their reduction :(

Not every woman can breastfeed. AND Not every pregnancy can a woman breastfeed. One time your can and another you can't. There is no normal. Also, my Dr. had me start with the cereal then the veggies. He felt if the child gets the sweet fruit first then they won't really care for the veggies. My child loves the veggies even today at 50.

10-15% of women can't produce milk and up to 60% have supply issues. I'm very thankful for formula as one of those moms but I've seen moms so desperate to only give breast milk that they buy sketchy black market human milk off of Facebook. My pediatrician has horror stories of moms with supply issues refusing to incorporate formula and their babies being admitted to the hospital for being dangerously underweight.

My 2 pregnancies were totally different and 10 years apart. With my 1st, my daughter, she was born at 30 weeks and was intubated for a while so I couldn’t breastfeed. I was able to exclusively pump bc by the time she was big enough to breast feed she was used to a bottle and wouldn’t latch. With my son he was born full term but had a very restricted lip and tongue tie and couldn’t latch. Not even a bottle. It was a whole 2 days before he finally figured out how to drink from a bottle. By the time we got and had the appointment with the specialist to fix those issues he was almost 3 weeks old and just flat out refused to breastfeed. He would drink breast milk but from a bottle. For whatever reason my milk supply just wasn’t enough for him. He wouldn’t gain weight and things were getting a little scary. The pediatrician then had me supplement my breast milk (1st bottle) with formula (a 2nd bottle) until his growth curve got where it needed to be but by 6 weeks in I was completely drying up no matter what I tried and believe me when I say I tried EVERYTHING! So we had to go 100% formula, I was so disappointed and it took me a while to get over it. But, both my kids are smart and healthy!

When I had my first baby I read the book “Real Food for Mother and Baby” by Nina Planck, she basically promotes a Paleo Diet, but has tons of great info on this topic. I am a long time follower but you almost lost me today with the breastfeeding comments made by Matt. My first child and I were unable to breastfeed successfully and after months of visits to the doctor and lactation consultant, 24 hour a day pumping, special diet and supplements nothing mattered more than the health and well-being of my baby. Formula was the only option at that point. The feeling that I failed my child has never left me even 15 years later because everyone tells you that it is natural and the best thing for your child but they never tell you that it may not actually work. My second child breastfed exclusively with no issues. Every situation is different and it is okay to ensure that your child is being fed and you are not berated by others for your choice.

I understand why women who struggle with breastfeeding are sensitive about this issue but to suggest it’s none of a man’s business when it’s also his child and he is expected to be equally involved and responsible in every other way makes no sense.
Yes, some people are not able to breastfeed and he even acknowledges this but to pretend that breastfeeding isn’t superior if you’re able to is a lie that no one believes deep down. She was able to breastfeed and so for them formula wasn’t an option. He’s probably just being honest, if not very diplomatic.

If i had a baby i most certainly would be eating as much whole organic food as a I could and as natural as i could. I sure in the hell wouldn’t be relying on food companies to make anything that wasn’t absolutely necessary. I make make all my dogs food and from basic ingredients as well as for my food. All the bad food advice that has been peddled since i was a kid by the government, medical establishment and corporations in the name of profits. No way in hells manger i would trust any of them. You think our great great grand parents had baby formula. All the outraged women who think men shouldn’t have opinions about their own child’s food have serious issues. You all should get together and wet nurse for each other. Overly sensitive much.

The rice cereal advice was also given and discarded. It makes no sense even for formula fed babies because that milk is fortified too. Keep your baby out of the sun, but also give them vitamin d supplements as your breastfeed. A lot of advice that makes no sense especially since they asked every time what the baby is eating. My first was 8 weeks early and he was given caffeine in the NICU and after he went home so I haven’t been overly concerned about my caffeine consumption but I’m also not usually a big caffeine drinker. I try to stick to one drink a day. Although my last one, I wanted a lot of tea.
I would definitely recommend anyone needing to pump that they start with a hospital grade pump to get things started. Rent one for a month or two.

Yea there are true medical conditions. I couldn’t because of gestational diabetes and Hashimotos (I made it work by taking domperidone ) if I would have had a supportive doctor to explain those issues to me I could have been more prepared. Instead I was blind sided when my son stopped gaining enough weight.

I have had 5 children. All of my kids started solids at different ages. One was almost 12 months old before he would even show interest in what we were eating. I was a breastfeeding peer counselor with our WIC program in MO. There are a lot of situations that make it hard for a mother to nurse or pump. Most women don't respond to pumping very well at all. Its definitely a personal choice on how you decide to feed your baby. Breast milk is the best option but fed is best if there are complications with nursing.

OK haters! For those of you who are not capable of truly listening and absorbing information.. Matt never said that you cannot ever you cannot ever do anything but breastfeed!! He literally said yes there are some situations. But I agree with him 100% that if you are capable of breastfeeding you should! Smart I could not breastfeed my 1st 2. 1 was because of postpartum depression and I had medicated. The 2nd was because I spiked a high temperature a week after he was born and I did not produce milk any longer. But I still say that if I could have breastfed my children I absolutely would! And I never got offended Because I listen to Matt! Come on folks listen to his words and process it. So quick to freak and get hateful.

I have IGT (insufficient glandular tissue) and only make about 6 ounces of milk daily because I don’t have enough glands to make more and I still agree breast is best! I hate that I have to supplement but am thankful for donor milk! When not available we use goats milk with a splash of cream! Baby is thriving! Still wouldn’t suggest formula to anyone. I watched this video the other day, and am still so frustrated by Matt’s comments about breastfeeding. There are so many reasons women can’t actually breastfeed, and fed is best. I’m especially annoyed after you watched your own wife struggle with breastfeeding your first child, and she was up endlessly pumping to maintain a supply for months, that you would still be so hardheaded about “breastfeeding is our RULE”. Shame on you for possibly putting pressure on your own wife, and other women who can’t breastfeed. Disappointed. I have birthed 4 babies, 3 for me and 1 for someone else, and have struggled severely each time to nourish them. The first one lost all her hair, and was labeled failure to thrive because I was so intent on nursing her, and she was starving. All because “breast is best”. I encourage you to rethink your attitude towards breastfeeding.

It's easy to turn it rubbery and you can't eat it TOO rare, either, but when you eat it you can TASTE just how nutrient-dense it is. It's like a combined vitamins and minerals punch right to the solar plexus--POW! But in a good way.
