Because people think music is like sport and only playing a million notes a minute is impressive. People fail to appreciate actual musicianship and playing a part that serves the song. Man why is this noticeably sped up? I am not hating AT ALL and there are many, many bands that do this, and I am also just going to put it out there that I am not saying doing this reflects skill, but man why do people speed their shit up when they perform it live?? Smells Like Teen Spirit was sped up intentionally when played live because Cobain hated that song but knew the fans loved it, so instead of taking it out of the setlist they just played it as fast as possible to get it over with. Most times it was the first song they played during the concert just to get it out of the way.
Most of the time it’s simply adrenaline. I used to have a count off on a metronome which solved this problem. Amazing that even huge bands don’t/didn’t do this. The Smashing Pumpkins were very guilty of this!
