    I saw Nicolai Ghiaurov as Boris Godunov at the Houston Grand Opera in the late 1980's and he was magnificent. And as a member of the HGO chorus, I had the privilege of being in a production of Aida with Mr. Ghiaurov where he played Ramphis. He was such a kind gentleman, and was very gracious with his colleagues, his fans and the company staff. Domingo and Freni also starred in that production which was televised on PBS. Dolora Zajick made her HGO debut as Amneris in the 2nd cast. I have very fond memories of that production.

      @@decoculaeselmariachi I find Ghiaurov voice very relatable, cause unlike the tenor voices which are rarer, it's very common to hear timbers like Ghiaurov's in daily life, yet very few people can produce such a beautiful sound out of it.
      So Ghiaurov is a walking demonstration that most men could actually take notice of for their own voices.

    Abbado is one of my favourite three conductors along with Bernstein and Karajan.

      I like Abbado but I prefer Muti. Besides these three, I also like Toscanini, Serafin, Krips, De Fabritiis and Basile.

    I like how the presenter mispronounced his name. The accent is on U. GhiaUrov. Comes from the Persian word for infidel. This is what the Turks used to call Bulgarians
