As you were sitting there speaking of the L.A . This message and this song has resonated with folks all around the world. He has sung something the ordinarily silent majority has rallied around...he has touched the hearts of people who are usually just touched on their wallets. Thanks for your candid review. By the way, he turned down an 8M recording contract. He's not a sell out. As a child of the 60s, that's something I can rally around.
Loved your commentary- as usual- and love that you are also a Virginia boy. I live in the Shenandoah Valley and this song has resonated because it IS the reality that too many are living.
Nice reaction. He's a brilliant lyricist and knows how to use his voice. He has been on the Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson podcasts. His speaking voice sounds low baritone. The "high" singing just works for his style and subject matter. His song "Doggon it" is a real good one if you want to explore him further.
@@John_MalloyThere is a reason vocal classification isn't done by speaking voice. Your speaking voice isn't as "pure" as your singing voice, and as such can vary quite a lot. I know basses who speak like tenors and vice versa. It's not a very conclusive thing.
@@WSlopeAggie So you think James Earl Jones might be a tenor or Mike Tyson a bass? Untrained singing voices can be deceptive as well, especially baritones singing with a "high larynx."
He is singing for : What percentage of the U.S. population is at poverty level? 11.6% There are 37.9 million Americans living in poverty, accounting for 11.6% of the total population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Mar 7, 2023
I don't think you understand that stat... it's actually a moving target created by the Census bureau and can never slip below 10%. The "poverty line" is changed annually, and is merely the household income levels required to determine eligibility for various programs. As such, the bottom 10%-15% of household incomes will ALWAYS be put in that bracket, regardless of how wealthy the US population as a whole becomes. Someone living at the "poverty line" in the US today would be considered "middle class" in much of Europe, and would likely be deemed "wealthy" in many other countries. The reality... if you think there's a lot of "poverty" in America, it actually means you haven't traveled much.
@@linkbloodelf9833 - Well of course the middle class is suffering. Democrats are running the show. All they ever do is rob the middle class blind, transfer mass sums of loot to their wealthy friends and donors, and of course toss scraps to the poor in exchange for votes. Why do you think most of the rich and famous people seem to be democrats? It's because they know the dems will NEVER come after their wealth, and will instead tax the holy hell out of the middle class.
I'm below the poverty line and I'm really getting tired of people talking about this song being for everyone. It's not. Stop speaking for others. I want no solidarity with people who have no empathy or compassion and kick around people even poorer than they are...using them as a scapegoat parroting the talking points of the people he's supposedly speaking against. Like your little song all you want but stop speaking for others. Speak for yourself.
Great reaction to the song, Peter. Oliver Anthony (Christopher Anthony Lunsford) was recording songs on his phone and uploading them to his YT channel before this song took off. He partnered with RadioWV to make a better quality video which is why you see the microphone, also. Those captions are pretty bad. The actual lyrics tend to vary a bit. Thank you for posting all the words to this deep dive into our souls that this song has brought up and caused so so many just people trying to live, to begin expressing what our hearts and minds have been unable to express for fear of all the wokeness we would be attacked by. I’m 74 and I sing this in my car hum and sing in the grocery store and it is absolutely amazing how many people smile at me now. Lord knows we are living in a new world. He was also on Jordan Peterson. He has turned down several recording contracts saying it is more evil than we think. He just played at the Blue Ridge Music Festival in Alton at the Viginia International Speedway. They said the crowd knew the words to all of his songs and were singing along. He has no manager and plans on staying independent. He is the only person ever to debut #1 on the Billboard 100 having never cracked the 100. Someone said he had 18 in the top 100 but do not know that factually.
I'm in IT, one of the few lines of work that pay well. The message still resonates, and not just because 90% of the people I know (including myself in the past) are or have been in a struggle to make ends meet. Doesn't matter the country, doesn't matter what you do... some things are, (un)fortunately universal. ...kinda like that little island clique.

I see many others have filled in the details. Oliver (Chris) seems to be an amazingly genuine person. I also hope stays independent. He seems like a smart dude!
He was offered a 8 million dollar contract by country artist John Rich and turned it down Prior to this he had done all his videos with a cell phone. A local country music radio station heard this song and actually produced this video.
Oliver's anthem is simple, 3 lines and 4 chords, and has become The World's Anthem. I think you will appreciate his use of the double entendre w/ the miners (coal)/minors on an island somewhere. Yes the captions are totally screwed up. Maybe on purpose or the A.I. can't translated Oliver's diction correctly. You will see this again in his other songs. He also pays tribute to the old country singers that he was influenced by. Thanks from SW Virginia. And a new sub.
9:50 no, I believe he was talking about literally everyone under the government. Everyone being destroyed by global politics, and he has no voice training he didn’t do the thing on purpose. It is a passion from a passionate man at a time blessed by God he is clearly doing gods work out here because he read the Bible to Joe Rogan
Turned down an 8 million dollar record contract. And he lives in a camper. Chris, his real name has got this. He read the Bible on Rogan. It is Oliver Anthony Music, in honor of his grandfather, but he said, Oliver or Chris either one is just fine with him. Very nice guy. Has worked hard for years he deserves this. GOOD LUCK, Chris.
The resonator guitar is his. The microphone and camera belong to WV Radio who had got whispers of him and came to record him while singing to friends and family in an outdoor get together.
I KNOW I'm "preachin' to the choir", but it's obvious why you had to diverge from the what/why/how of your usual "tember". That southern Appalachian/Piedmont/Cumberland Plateau cry. Its freaking GORGEOUS and breaks all rules and can that even be quantified? MASSIVE respect rooted in knowing YOUR history/story for simply just "getting it ". Silently watching from Nashville and digging your spot-on vocal disections from WAY back. Keep crushing it bro!
Oliver (Chris) has turned down 8 million dollar contracts after the song went viral. Oliver also stopped a concert tour because he found out the ticket prices were too high, Joey and Oliver have released a statement that they will fulfill their agreement for the rest of the scheduled bookings but after that they will make sure all tickets after this will be $25-$40 dollars. Oliver will keep control of his music and it just for fun and for the fans. He does have more music out but it just him his resonator guitar on an iPhone. Radiowv did the recording as a showcase of his talent.
His story is as important as his music. When you hear the pain in his voice it’s because he has lived it. When he was on Rogan, Joe looked amazed as they talked - think it surprised him - def not what he expected. You should listen to The Bee Gees - I’m not kidding - they didn’t sing Opera but their harmony and range is legendary. In every form of music there are giants….each with a lesson to teach for those who are willing to learn ❤

The man is brilliant I put this on in a couple of months ago and I love every minute of it he's got a lot more great songs out there too can't stop listening to him looking for new music of this man you're right he sings for everyone I'm in Australian and I'm not that keen on country music this puts it right into perspective can't get enough
The first time i heard it i cried because hes 100% right we need our country back
Listening to this was far more about the message than the notes, although I did enjoy his voice. That’s real country! Your reaction was spot on.
I admire you for saying you grew up in a privileged environment. This is not opera - this is raw human emotion. Better than any opera, ever. IMHO. Loved watching your facial expressions, watching this. It has struck a nerve with people around the world. God bless this man and God bless you in your world. Peace to you.
Perfect reaction, imho ... letting the song speak for itself with minimal, succinct, instructional pointers from you. Thanks!
I'm an Aussie and it is restored my faith in young people right around the world, young and old have so much in common and we should work together to make changes in the world of the few people that make the decisions for ALL of us. Keep this going for years. Bless you 🌻
Much love my fellow aussie
You can't tell much from speaking voice.
@@WSlopeAggie I think you can. But what do I know I'm just some guy in a youtube comment section.
@@John_Malloym
God bless Oliver and love you reaction 💕💕💕
All I know is he brought me to tears
Loved your reaction. He is the Thomas Paine of our time ❤
He is singing for :
What percentage of the U.S. population is at poverty level?
11.6%
There are 37.9 million Americans living in poverty, accounting for 11.6% of the total population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Mar 7, 2023
And that number is growing, and growing, pretty soon the rate will be exponential and the dollar goes down the drain.
Middle class is almost just as bad if not worse in some aspects than lower class. This country is in a really bad spot right now.
I’ve been sellin’ my soul, workin’ all day
Overtime hours for bullshit pay
So I can sit out here and waste my life away
Drag back home and drown my troubles away
It’s a damn shame what the world’s gotten to
For people like me and people like you
Wish I could just wake up and it not be true
But it is, oh, it is
Livin’ in the new world
With an old soul
These rich men north of Richmond
Lord knows they all just wanna have total control
Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do
And they don’t think you know, but I know that you do
‘Cause your dollar ain’t sh- and it’s taxed to no end
‘Cause of rich men north of Richmond
I wish politicians would look out for miners
And not just minors on an island somewhere
Lord, we got folks in the street, ain’t got nothin’ to eat
And the obese milkin’ welfare
God, if you’re 5 foot 3 and you’re 300 pounds
Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds
Young men are puttin’ themselves six feet in the ground
‘Cause all this damn country does is keep on kickin’ them down
Lord, it’s a damn shame what the world’s gotten to
For people like me and people like you
Wish I could just wake up and it not be true
But it is, oh, it is
Livin’ in the new world
With an old soul
These rich men north of Richmond
Lord knows they all just wanna have total control
Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do
And they don’t think you know, but I know that you do
‘Cause your dollar ain’t sh- and it’s taxed to no end
‘Cause of rich men north of Richmond
I’ve been sellin’ my soul, workin’ all day
Overtime hours for bullshit pay
Well done
Thank you for posting all the words to this deep dive into our souls that this song has brought up and caused so so many just people trying to live, to begin expressing what our hearts and minds have been unable to express for fear of all the wokeness we would be attacked by.
I’m 74 and I sing this in my car hum and sing in the grocery store and it is absolutely amazing how many people smile at me now.
Lord knows we are living in a new world. But there are hundreds of thousands of us that have that old soul.
Thanks again. Now I have all the correct words and can sing it loud and proud.
@@Barbara-jd2sk Hi, Barbara! We're all in this together whether it feels like that or not sometimes. I can hear your heart singing from all the way over here. Keep the love going!
His songs are lyrically genius!
He has a song "Virginia " that I think you eill enjoy.
Billboard is a fraud anyway so who cares?
I heard he turned down 8 mil bc his poetry worth more
I feared for your sip of drink taken just before 7 minutes with the line that was coming up.
It’s an impactful song! No words!
When I first heard this I listened to it several times because I was taken aback at how much it fit me! Then I went and listened to his other music and just fell in love with his music. Another one I really related to is "I've Got to Get Sober."
LOL just watching your taemin reacton and popped over to this and had to shout out another rural virginia person. I'm from about 1.5 hours south of Richmond and lived there for 3 years in my early 20s before I joined the military. I live in NoVa now right near those Rich Men lol
Great reaction & analysis (as much as you did this time)... I see that it hit you just like it hit most regular people. Bravo Peter!
Love this video & his singing. I'll watch it over and over. Will ever get tired of this.
He wrote this and his other songs as way for him process and heal . It just hapoens it is also helping others.
This song resonates all over the world - unfortunately. 🤷🏻♀️
I really like your new style of reacting and analyzing. You're more relaxed and more you, I guess. 🙂 Perfect. 👌🏻
Thank you for your continued sharing and enthusiasm
I see many others have filled in the details. Oliver (Chris) seems to be an amazingly genuine person. I also hope stays independent. He seems like a smart dude!
You need to review I Want To Go Home by Oluver Anthony (Chris Lumsford). Another amazing message!
If you’re from Virginia, he has a song called Virginia that is excellent!
He was offered a 8 million dollar contract by country artist John Rich and turned it down Prior to this he had done all his videos with a cell phone. A local country music radio station heard this song and actually produced this video.
it is worth checking him out. good reaction great song
4 chords and the Truth i heard recently. Thought it was fitting
Perfect 👌
Great reaction. Big fan of Charismatic Voice
He will stay independent. He’s for the common people! Gods bless Chris
Thanks Peter !!!! HUGS!
Elizabeth's reaction to this song is amazing -- please check it out!
The resonator guitar is his. The microphone and camera belong to WV Radio who had got whispers of him and came to record him while singing to friends and family in an outdoor get together.
I appreciate your analysis of his voice. Thank you for this unique reaction. 🙏
He is trying to tell YOU the truth along with the rest of the world
He not only has a good voice but the diamond message !!
Talking about the vocals with a tear in your eye makes me want to cry,, but you know.
Enjoyed your analysis of the song and take on his voice.
You need to look up his story. It may be just as good as the song. He just released a few more songs and they are great.
This message carried from feeling straight to the point kicked ass as to who has cause the problems.
OLIVER'S BALLAD IS MARVIN GAYE'S "WHAT'S GOING ON?" FOR OUR TIME. HIS MUSIC HAS INDEED BEEN BLESSED. 😇
Welcome to the 'waking up' movement! First time watcher; this song litterally changed my life a month ago.
I love your voice 😍
You have a new subscriber sir. I’m originally from Va. Virginia and Virginia artists have my heart always. 🥰
Radiowv did the recording as a showcase of his talent.
and then out of nowhere comes a voice, crying from the mountains of Virgina, speaking not only for the USA but for the world ! !
You are in for a treat going through his catalog
You need to check out "I wanna go home" and "Got to get sober". Good stuff!
Good on you sir for deciding not to stop the song when you did…you did right in this case
He put out an introductory video the day before this was released. Said he was hoping to get "some traffic" lol.
It is entertaining watching trained singers and vocal coaches react to raw tallent.
I live in Virginia too. I used to live in Roanoke. Now in Staunton. Small world.
First time viewer here, love your insights and critique! Your speaking voices sounds like Chris'!! Listen to him on "It's a Pleasure to Meet You", an introduction video he made prior to the song dropping! 👍
It’s for people like me and people like you!
From a Va.Beach local! I would Love to hear you sing Opera! My Grandfather did also. Elkton, Roanoke area.
Oliver Anthony is like collards and cornbread compared to over produced, overly expensive gourmet art pieces on a plate that's passes for food. America loves him ❤ I love him.
Yeah, he's from Farmville, VA. I'm sure you know what is 2 hours north of Richmond. He was an industrial aluminum salesman until a month or so ago.
God is working great things through this man. He should be in all of our prayers!
I respect the insight from your perspective. Best wishes.
From a fellow Virginian…I was wondering if you’ve ever reacted to David Phelps? His “I Have Nothing” is stunning. But his complete library is breathtaking.
Sad the reaction is only 12 mins long, I can't get enough of this song. Thanks for the content though!
