It's a cycle, teams will be putting 8 DBs out there at some point, then offenses will start running more to attack that. Also even in today's game you can't be successful by passing 100% of the time, it takes all the guessing out of it for the defense

Colts fan, that is why I always look at Joseph Adai as the example.
You ultimately want an elite QB who can pass efficiently and allow you to utilize the run as a mix up.
The colts would torch defenses with heavy passing then run delayed draws and Adai would take advantage of the scramble to cover the pass.
I think Adai was a severely pedestrian RB who’s role fit into a fantastic pass scheme.

the thing with the running back position is that it isnt just that teams are running it less, it is also that teams are running with non running backs more. Mobile qbs are in demand now and receivers that can run the ball are becoming popular. Also, outside of henry the elite running backs are essentially teams number 3 or 4 receivers. I think the position will move towards hybrid players like deebo and mccaffrey. There really isnt too much difference between those two players besides what position they are called.

    • @cavaleer
      @cavaleer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

No. Mobile QBs are not a running game, just ask Lamar Jackson. Football will always be a running game, to one degree or another. Melvin needs to do some research. The problem is there's so much talent, and so much chance of injury at the position that teams feel like they're not worth top dollar. Maybe his problem is teams don't run as much as they used to, which they don't. But that's because defenses became so good.

I think the age of the Bell Cow RB is coming to a close and RB by committee will become much more prevalent.
If you could spread the load between 2-3 serviceable backs, the longevity of all careers will become much longer, and post rookie deal signing will likely increase (less money but longer contracts).
I love Jonathan Taylor, but like the recession, his injury bubble is overdue to pop. I read about his overuse all the way back to his collegiate years in Wisconsin, and it is unbelievable he has not had an injury to this point. Here’s to hoping he’s a genetic freak like Frank Gore.
I understand why this is happening, but it seems incredibly unfair to the elite backs in the NFL.
They are hands down the most used and abused position with the highest risk of career ending/hampering injuries and do not get paid like it.
I wonder if there is a way to offset cap space for RB deals? This could incentivize paying RBs without eating up valuable cap space. The. It would simply come down to the billionaire owners paying for service to the team.

There will always be a running back. It’s not “dying” just under valued. I always thought it was strange. RB’s are expected to catch, run AND block. They take the worst beating yet the pay is decreasing. It’s a weird logic…. “Yeah, we know you have to have multiple skills and crash into salivating 220+ pound men but you won’t be around long because of that so we are not paying you a big contract” 😂😂 so messed up.

Similarly ranked RBs and TEs basically get paid the same now. But I'd structure a TE something like 3 years, $24M with $14M guaranteed. (Will Dissly)

I wouldn’t be surprised if some teams run two TEs or four WRs more often-forgoing a RB, but having a running option that isn’t your QB is pretty important.

Well Melvin is sadly mistaken. Running backs will need to be able to get 60-80 catches and still need to be 1000 yard rushers in 6 years. Runningbacks will be cmc and Saquan and deebo and Alvin kamaras and tony pollards. Just like the game evolved and the guys that woulda been RB’s in the 90s/00s are know recruited be linebackers bc the skill set
Prototypes change. In 1995 dion jones and shaq thompson would be runningback. Tony pollard would be a corner. Tyreek would be a tailback.

The running game will always be relevant in the NFL. Why would you throw on 3rd and 1, outside of a surprise attack? It makes sense to run on 2nd down a lot of the time to get into a 3rd and manageable as well as goal to go. Plus you always want to keep the defense on it's heels, trying to guess what you're going to do, as well as set up the play action. Not to mention running out the clock and closing out games.

RBs aren’t dying. They’re becoming even more valuable now than ever before. And bc of that, the positions also becoming more specialized than ever. Days of a workhorse w/ 400 carries is done. But now having multiple backs that can specialize in a certain aspect and rotate w/ each other to keep each other fresh has made the production from the RB spot more integral than its ever been. More cap space is being invested into the position than any other time. Teams just aren’t trying to invest as much into Individual RBs. Why would they when there’s mad value in RBs who can catch, or flank out wide. Run between and off tackles and also pass block when needed. Having 2-3 guys to do all that is a lot better than leaning on 1 guy to do it

Have to remember that at any position, the average length of an NFl career is about 3 1/2 years. A lot of kids who are under the age of 20 really can't remember seeing this cycle play out over time. Every year there's a new player to be hyped to be considered an all time great for 1 or 2 seasons. I could list thousands of dudes who played in the NFL who fit this bill. They think guys like Gurley or Bell are a recent trend for RBs, naw man that's how it's always been. You only get once I'm a generation type RBs, once in a generation. The idea that anybody could be a Walter Payton or a Barry sanders today just because athletes are better now doesn't mean there's any guys out there now as good as they were.
