    I practice catch wrestling and actually grew up with that as my main martial art that I would focus on, one day my cousin had told me he had been training in a jiujitsu school for a few months and wanted to test his ability to grapple on me in a sparring match, since I was one of the only people in our family that actually trained in wrestling of any kind. He did pretty good, doing his best to stay on top of me and hold me close and smother anything I did when he wasn’t, but while he was on top of me I managed to push him onto his back while I was still on my back, now both of us laid there with our legs still intertwined, so of course I gripped the heal of his foot and cranked it and he was forced to immediately tap. I was surprised when he told me that what I did would’ve been an illegal move in his gym. We sparred again and this time I caught his head between my legs and forced him to tap again with a scissor lock, I asked him if that would’ve been illegal, and he said he doesn’t know, he doesn’t know if anyone in his school would even think to do that rather then just try to get in a better position.

    I can't wait to eventually work some catch wrestling into my game. I fell in love with grappling as a kid playing with my friends, but my school didn't have wrestling nor did I even know high school wrestling was even a thing outside of the movies. Fast forward to now, I'm a four year BJJ blue belt, and I plan on making grappling my life.

    Helio Gracie presumably refused to fight Euclydes "Tatu" Hatem, because Tatu would not wear a gi.
    Tatu did fight the champion of the Gracie family at the time George Gracie and dominantly beat him.
    All grappling arts are awesome and learning each will definitely bring up anyone's game.

    • @frankmartinelli3122
      @frankmartinelli3122 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      There was a lot of that back then. JJ competitors trying to convince the American or English wrestlers to wear a gi, or as the Westerners would call it, a "jacket". Many times they would have to agree to, Odd number rounds with a jacket, and even number rounds no jacket.
      It should be noted that the wrestlers had no problem with their opponents wearing what they wanted, they couldnt understand how their opponent could expect them to wear the gi however.

    I have a background in Kung Fu and Judo. I have trained on and off for last six years with Raul Ramirez who teaches Catch Wrestling out of Culver City CA. Look up Raul. he's done an amazing job with Catch @ his Snake Pit school out of Culver City CA. on a side note; Judo Gene Le Bell trained under Karl Gotch and he often credits Karl as his Teacher in Pro Wrestling. Gene also credits Karl with teaching him the Double Wrist lock which later became known a the infamous Kimura technique. If I'm correct, I believe it was also Karl that taught the double wrist lock to Judoka Kimura who used it to defeat Helio Gracie.

      BJJ and Judo are the same. Over time, both evolved into sports, but-like anything-originated from a single source. All grappling has roots. All striking has roots.
      There’s a motto I live by:
      I respect all the arts.
      I respect all my opponents.
      And I respect myself.

    I love me some "Catch-as-Catch-Can" grappling! However, in my advanced age, I find myself gravitating towards Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (Torrance, CA) due to the gentler, more leveraged-based techniques-especially because GJJ techniques were developed with the weaker, i.e., smaller man, females, kids vs a larger, stronger, more physically dominant man in mind. In my experience, Catch-style wrestling is harder, nay, nearly impossible for a weaker, less aggressive, less athletic, perhaps disabled person to become proficient at. Catch wrestling is for them young bucks, dudes that are oozing testosterone.

    • @studiocorax8790

      I am myself an older guy longing to explore bjj or catch wrestling. Discovered catch wrestling through a short film about Rufino Dos Santos describing his match against Carlos Gracie. The techniques of bjj probably suits me better, but the straightforwardness and raw side of catch wrestling is most appealing too.

      In BJJ, if you're young and athletic, you will use those to your advantage in grappling. It's not different. When you grow older you have to change how you grapple. The same goes for Catch Wrestling. It is no less technical than BJJ, but many of its throws and submission techniques rely on weight and leverage so that even your grandmother could pull it off.

  • @KnownAsCLH
    @KnownAsCLH 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Amazing video. The conditioning aspect point of this video is spot on. Infact I see no need to train BJJ when I want to do MMA because it's slow paced, doesn't incorporate punches or any strikes, and I now that we are playing the don't make a mistake game, you already lost. If one is not training to be maxxing their v02 max in extending their explosive power and composure control, then you are half assing it. And that's how I feel about just nearly every BJJ school I've seen. The technical locks don't just happen because you're a black belt. It takes practice of real grappling starting from a stand-up position.
    The neck crank rule I also did not know about, I thought that would be a standard lock or hold. It's the most basic and every middle school wreslters favorite move to hip toss and crank to their "north" as the BJJ would say. lolol.

    I wish there was more catch wrestling! I can’t stand how little emphasis on Takedowns there is in Jiu-Jitsu. How are you gonna claim your the best grappling art if you cant force it to the ground.

    • @stefanwolf8558
      @stefanwolf8558 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly! I have the same thoughts that's why I train freestyle wrestling on top on my BJJ routine. I also see this in MMA, where high level BJJ guys get their entire game completely shut down if they can't secure a takedown. Examples are Demian Maia, Brian Ortega (he normally has good boxing but when faced against a better striker i.e Holloway, he got shut down when he couldn't get the fight to the ground).

    • @ezekiel_phantom2326
      @ezekiel_phantom2326 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think many wrestlers feel comfortable with Catch Wrestling. It feels like a natural progression. However, everyone is different and some Wrestlers love learning a complete new paradigm in BJJ. I am BJJ Black Belt and personally I don't feel comfortable with the BJJ culture, methods, traditions. I feel more comfortable with Catch Wrestlers.

    what exactly are the rules of catch? Ive seen people lose by pin but they also throw up submissions off their back. how does that work? imo this would be the best style of grappling to learn for mma, as they cant stay on their back for too long while also working and knowing how to defend submissions

    • @user-nq4hw5eb9d
      @user-nq4hw5eb9d 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah you can only lose by submission or by pin. I agree it would be great for mma and would be easily picked up by a seasoned wrestler. Bjj leans pretty heavy into fighting from the guard which is good to know but overall less dynamic imo if that’s your only form of training.

    • @DIDOS
      @DIDOS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pin is two shoulders to the ground. That would be the case with a classic closed guard, or a half guard when they have under-hook, biceps to the face and your flattened out. However, as shown in some early footage you can technically sit or do anything as long as you are not pinned. BTW I recently started making videos again, your support is appreciated. 👊

    Is Luta Livre the same as catch wrestling?

    • @DIDOS
      @DIDOS  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi, Brazilian Luta Livre is a Catch Wrestling based martial art. The two are technically very similar and IMO share the same structure but there are some differences, for example in Luta Livre you cannot win by Pin, whereas traditionally, in Catch Wrestling you can win by Submission or Pin. Thank you for watching!

    • @tichtran664
      @tichtran664 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The irony is that luta livre translate into Spanish as LUCHA LIBRE(ie pro wrestling). But then again pro wrestling EVOLVED from catch. Yet people look down at pro wrestling. Where did you think Sakabura, Ken Shamrock, etc learned their catch wrestling?! From pro wrestling.

    I am a BJJ practitioner and I also do both gi and no gi. I want to ask this question to catch wrestlers because I never did that. Do you think it is easier to transition from catch wrestling to Jiu jitsu or other way around it is easier to go form Jiu jitsu to wrestling? You forgot one bro. Sadly Jiu Jitsu is not an Olympic sport, Wrestling is. What is interesting is Judo is and it is in the same family tree as jiu jitsu but the only recognized Olympic sports are: Judo, Tae kwon do, Karate, and Wrestling.

    • @DIDOS
      @DIDOS  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Wrestling and Catch Wresting are different things even though Catch Wrestling is the father of Freestyle Wrestling, so being an Olympic sport is not a difference between C.W. and J.J because neither are Olympic sports. To answer your question, in my opinion, as a BJJ Black Belt, I see more and more BJJ black belts adopting Catch Wrestling philosophy, methods and technique as a way to expand their games. That's arguably what "modern BJJ" is doing, a lot of new concepts that are actually common in Catch Wrestling. I have also seen Wrestlers transitioning way easier to Catch Wrestling than to BJJ because it shares some of the core principles. Thanks for watching.

    I don't understand why BJJ schools banned certain submissions. In my small gym, anything is allowed. Any technique that forces your partner to tap while they resist, that's what we use.

    What's the difference between No-gi jiujitsu and catch wrestling?

    • @DIDOS
      @DIDOS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Recently the lines are merging. Traditional Catch Wrestling and Traditional Jiu Jitsu were fairly different. There are lines of Catch Wrestling that have evolved. There are styles of Catch Wrestling without the Pin (Like SCW or Luta Livre) that look a lot like modern No-Gi JJ. Now No-Gi Jiu Jitsu has also come a long way, as they incorporated wrestling, a lot more leglocks, cranks, granby rolls, etc.

    • @goodfortune5480
      @goodfortune5480 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DIDOS Thanks! I like to incorporate the catch in the no-gi but alot of my jitsu coaches don't teach us the effective mean stuff. Mean stuff is way more effective for the little guy.
