    The newspaper articles are for real. I paused every time and read it. The writing was utterly diferent from todays Portuguese and as a Brazilian and Portuguese teacher I can assure the writing style fits the time period as a glove. No fake news here. Never heard about this part of the Gracie family story. Disgraceful at least.

      You can tell the Gracies are scum just by the way they fight. They step on unconscious opponents when they win, Royce holds on to submissions even after he feels the guy tap out and the ref trying to push him off. They are ego driven. They should have never been taught how to fight.

    I met Royce rorian and helio in 1993 I believe. at a gym in Jersey doing a seminar introducing Brazilian jiu jujitsu, Royce picked me out to grapple because I was the biggest guy in the gym, I kept him off me longer than he liked and got super aggressive until he choked me, it seemed to me then I did not like how he was as a teacher, I had trained in judo under master yoshida yonezuka and he was a great teacher with no ego, unlike Royce. Soon after the seminar UFC began and the rest is history. I did meet renzo and he was very personable as was rorian, helio was a angry stone faced man now I see why. Thanks for the truth.

      Royce and the gracies are piece of s*** of human beings. I never liked him since i saw his dvd where he proudly boasts how during one of his ufc fights his brother encouraged him to break his opponents arm. He talks about this like its something great.
      Even in the early ufcs you can see royce did not care for his opponents at all. He just wanted to hurt them and show off bjj.
      Even when he loses, he doesnt even have the decency to just say good fight and congratulate the opponent. He just whines like a sore loser and makes tons of excuses. And you can see where that attitude came from.....his father and uncles who ambushed a wrestler after losing to him.
      The world has been duped by the gracies. They are not decent people. They are just a bunch of hoodlums who go round abusing anyone who doesnt suck up to bjj and anyone who seems too aggressive for bjj they usually avoid.

      I've seen the first UFCs and thought the same thing regarding Royce's disposition just from observation. It does also make sense that not every family member lacks honour and fairplay like Royce, Helio, and Carlos does. In a way they seem to me to have some attributes of a mob family.

      An old friend of mine went to a Gracie seminar in the late nineties. He took hapkido . It was royce and his crew . He said the toughest grappler at that seminar was a judo guy. He said the Gracie guy when they were playing around with him couldn't do much. Any way he said just for self defense he was staying in hapkido. He was an older gentleman so competition mma style was not for him. The Gracie showed him a little stuff on the ground when he blended with his hapkido ground work and that was nice . But in the locker room he spoke to the judo guy , who attended seminars by gene labell and bother judo pioneers, said the Gracie's didn't show him much as a fact he thought royce was overated. He was the one that told my friend his hapkido had some nice ground stuff after they were on the matt together. He was surprised

      DIDOS I hope this video does not get taken down. The Gracies have a tendency to bury many information that is not in their favour. Helio gave his viewpoint about this incident, but he made it sound like it was a fair one on one fight, which of course was ridiculous. After police investigation, the three brothers were no doubt the perpetrators. Carlos was actually a repeat offender of the SAME CRIME, which found him guilty for a longer time on the sentence, but the president of Brazil pardoned the Gracie brothers.

    Sakuraba was a catch wrestler who defeated every Gracie he ever faced. The Gracie's time passed long ago. You must have many more skills today to be at the top and that's why you rarely see a Gracie fight at a highly competitive fight.. They make their money running schools but not at the top big money fights as competitors.

      Mr Bjj 101 ik. I talk quite openly about my view on the gracies to my friend, but at the gym i keep it under wraps, primarily because there's no need to bring it up, but also in large part because of things like this. Their histlry is not something to be proud of. I used to revere these men for all they did for martial arts and grappling. But then i realised the jiu jitsu they 'created' was nothing but the judo they were taught with their name of it, and it is only with the controbution of world talents that enough techniques and understanding has been contributed to the art to call itself its own. And from there all these little details you don't see in the documentaries, or in the history books, comes forth. You see how they try to disgrace other martial arts, like in a jiu jitsu book i read which made judo out to be this cheap cash grab by uust changing the name of 'jujutsu' to 'judo' (which ironically is what the gracies did). I saw how helio's story and quotes were almost word for word taken from the writings and stories of Kano. I saw how Royce cheated against Yoshida after losing and getting the match decision changed. Then i heard stories from wrestlers who were told not to wear their shoes because they're 'weapons' and then getting choked by gi jackets. I heard the claims they made of creating several techniques which predate even the judo they were taught. I saw the special rules they got. I saw how their claims of athleticism were tedted. Then i saw how they changed history, and how history is remembered by their students. And then i saw things like this and it made me sick.
      It makes me ashamed that the martial art i practice, as an evolution of a martial art which had true discipline and no shame to hide and a fully open history and a modest leader, has been rebranded and is now under the banner of these psychopathic thugs who gang assualt people who beat them out of spite, while claiming they can cross collar vhoke you out before you can pull a trigger on a gun in your hand. Then claiming other martial arts are unrealistic. Seeing how they take techniques out of their syllabus, e.g. Throws and leglocks, because they were no good at them - meanwhile when other arts like judo get beaten by guys doing armbars, they start training them.
      Now that jiu jitsu's out of the hands of the gracies, the damage they dealt to it is slowly being undone. The shameful past is being compensated by bright minds who understand what a martial art is, and their tyranous campaign on other martial arts is being undone by their own creation.
      But it still makes me wince that these are the men i admired once upon a time

    Here's patriarch Helio Gracie's shockingly dishonest account of the (for lack of a better word) lynching of Rufino dos Santos:
    “It was 66 years ago that I was involved in my biggest trouble. A famous fighter in Brazil (a former Luta Livre Champion) Manoel Rufino dos Santos, said that he was going to show the world that we Gracies were nothing. It was at the Tijuca Tennis Club of Rio that I gave my answer to him. I arrived and said "I came to answer the declaration that you made." He threw a punch and I took him to the ground, with two fractures of his head, and a broken clavicle, and blood spurting out. But it was a foolish act that I did. Today I would never repeat such a thing."
    I've been practicing BJJ for about 16 years, but I don't have a shred of respect for the ignoble thugs credited with founding the art.

    • @DIDOS
      @DIDOS  6 ปีที่แล้ว +73

      Yeah, that's fucked up... so according to Helio, he took Rufino down and caused him "two head fractures", (so this was not from hitting him in the head with a deadly weapon, which by the way, according to the official report was how Helio opened the group assault). So 66 years after the crime, Helio claimed he destroyed Rufino with his BARE hands to the point he was spurting blood out. Wow... Helio's older brother gets dominated by this Catch Wrestler, but Helio goes and takes the Catch Wrestler down and beats him 1 on 1, beyond recognition, with nothing but his bare hands, fracturing his skull twice (NOT with the metal object, or the 3 Gracie brothers soccer kicking him in the head when he was down as is stated in the official report)... Ok, he had some serious striking skills. Just wow... Can you confirm if that was an interview he gave for Playboy magazine?

Either his dad or someone else in the Gracie family shut the lights off, so Renzo would not lose. The audience then rioted, which happens in Brazil. The Brazilians will openly say this, that the Gracies did it. Here in North America, it is only the Gracies account on history, which is twisted. All that was said, was the fight did not finish, because there was a riot. Notice no mention of the lights being shut off by the Gracies.

The only time I felt uneasy was when we had a seminars with Royce and he stopped the class to say “ to be honest, if some one gets to close to me or I think he is going to start something I just drive him into a wall and make sure he can’t do anything. Why take the chance.”
    It’s fair from what we learn and are told every week in class. I love GJJ but didn’t like Royce Gracie himself.

    Fantastic video; it put out information I had never heard of. Certainly the great Mr Rufino Dos Santos. As a practitioner of the martial arts for many years and a former freestyle wrestler, I previously thought the greatest grappler of all time was Dan Gable, but now I’m leaning towards Dos Santos...amazing.
    It was sad to here about the way he was stacked by the Gracie family. There should be a story done about him, his life ordeals and success on the mat promoting his Catch wrestling style. He was a great one, that you for sharing.

    It appears the Gracie attitude was inherited, although not as severe. I would say many people in North America is not aware of a lot of these stories, since they are withheld and prevented from being out in public. Anyone here remember when Robin Gracie lost a Gracie challenge against a Frenchman (Damien Riccio), then Royce flew to Spain and went to France and started a bar fight with his goons attacking Damien Riccio.
    Royce of course used the same accusation he did against Eddie Bravo, of something in the lines of You talk shit about my family. People in North America think the Gracies are gods in Brazil, but don't realise how many Brazilians hate them, since the Gracies were in the upper class and viewed the poor as low lives.

    • @philweed1603

    Great video. For those training in bjj - just carry on training, take what you benefit from it and do not idolise.
    Remember, three serious negative aspects about bjj for street self defence:
    1/. You can easily get stabbed by the guy you are grappling with. Get a bjj to wear a white T shirt and wrestle with you as you mark his t shirt with a red marker pen. See how vulnerable you are wrestling on the floor.
    2/. You may have the attacker/assailant in a compromised position - a lock, etc. And his mates or mother or girlfriend kicks you in the head.
    3/. The environment. You may have to roll and fall onto a curb, hardcore, gravel, etc. You could break your spine falling to the ground. Or damage yourself. No comfortable soft mats in the street.

    • @danielmontilla1197
      @danielmontilla1197 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Pete Alder excellent way to put it. Bjj, as almost any other martial art, has great self-defense potential, but it's not infallible...

      Pete Alder
      I agree that some people get blinded to the reality of fighting and seem to idolise BJJ. I believe this is what you were trying to address.
      But your point about the knife is exactly the same for ANY style of fighting. Give your opponent a marker and then try stand-up fighting and he will mark you many times. The point is if there is any possible chance to leave the scene before a knife fight happens take it. If you fight someone who has a knife you will get cut.
      I have trained a lot of stand-up and only a tiny bit of BJJ but try to be realistic about things and not let ego get in the way of reality. I sometimes fail at this :).
      But as you say keep on training hard and try to test everything you do to find the truth.

    • @vincedgarvlogs
      @vincedgarvlogs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same reason why Jigoro Kano focused on throws for self defense. You can't do unlimited newaza in the street, you'll get pub stomped, when the fight goes to the ground, finish it quickly, and if it's not possible, get back up.
