Very telling that this is the first search result you get when you search for this stuff. The fact that the establishment popular culture and media feel the need to get in front of all these topics should tell you everything you need to know. Steven Colbert shouldn't even be commenting on this, unless of course there was something to it. Why would a late night comedy host suddenly be interested in such topics? One has to wonder.

Yes, and thankfully it’s not as corrosive as some of its’ cousins like bleach and ammonia, though it does kill mold because it’s on the opposite end of the pH scale, (about pH 10). Kinda...
This is very much an "Us vs. Them" problem. It's known as tribalism psychology. When you are apart of a group, information from other groups is ignored, especially if it goes against what your tribe believes.
From the MAGA perspective "libs" are the enemy tribe. We say get vaccinated and they say screw off because to go against their group causes social death which is very much worse then actual death. They would rather die from COVID then be shunned from their own social group.
One way to combat this problem is to find a way into the tribe and once accepted it becomes much easier to change their minds, something an "outsider" could never do. The problem in this particular case is they are so far down the rabbit hole you end up validating their perspective by joining the tribe which strengthens the cognitive dissonance of the group. It's too out of control for a single outsider to jump in and change the minds of the MAGA tribe.
They only ones capable of changing the MAGA tribe at this point are the leaders and they clearly have no interest in that. The other options is for the tribe to get small enough that joining it will lead to a new member being able to change the groups opinions. Right now joining them in hopes of helping them only strengths their resolve and makes social death even less desirable than it already is.
