Very well done, I have a 2000 Toyota Harrier ( sister car of Lexus RX300 ), and I need to install 7 inch Car stereo. I may just follow this set up. Challenge is extending cable from the present monitor to the console (8 wire loom)
Outstanding! I've no doubt that I could buy an android and take the dash apart. But that is how it would be forever a lump of wires that would never look factory slick like yours.
Ok William, as soon as I pick up my "new to me" 2001 RX300, (should be next week) I am making an appt. All the way from TX :). Your expertise is surely needed.
Brilliant mod! Wish I was talented enough to do this, even with the instructions. If you're anywhere in the Midwest, I'd gladly drive to have you do this to my 2003!
I'm from Kansas City, you cant get anymore Midwest than that. the Mod is really easy though, im serious, the hardest part was extending the wires for the blue screen from the dash to the console because you have to fish those 8 wires that power it. other than that it is a 3.5 mm plug from aux bypass to the tablet and its done ............maybe 2 hours work. Ive since replaced that android tablet with a LG Intution, because I wanted the Bluetooth option for music and to monitor vehicle functions via Bluetooth to OBD2
William Kent I was just in KC for the Soulfest! I just bought a 99 lexus rx300. Can I drive down there over the labor day weekend and have you install a tablet for me?
Will any tablet fit with this RX300 ? I have a 2001 RX300 and looking to install a new touchscreen stereo but some listings state that their stereos particularly fit for certain vehicles.
Well what I wanted most was Navigation in the dash, along with that I can view videos (though I don't do that much, listen to Sat Radio, streamed from phone, surf net if I felt need to, and listen to playlist via Power AMP Player app. sound quality is great (Remember I am still using the Lexus stock player)
a more detailed break down of install the original screen is being held in place with four screws and a bracket. what you have to do is remove the wood grain trim around the shifter ( I used a screwdriver wrapped in tape) once that's off you'll se four 4 screws that surround the radio console remove these, the radio and screen will pull out there will be to connectors the hazard and the seatbelt light that are still attached remove these then remove the 3 connectors from the back of the cassette and the whole console will come out. behind the blue screen there will be a connector pull that out. set console aside. the connector you pulled out of the blue screen is the one you will need to extend to wherever you decide to relocate the blue screen to. cut several lengths of wire to the desired lengths needed to relocate that connector. run those wires to the new location (I used a coat hanger) you will need to drill a hole in the back of the drawer to run the wires through once thats done cut the connector off leaving enough wire to reconnect that connector at the far end of your extended wire and splice in extentions. once thats done remove the blue screen from the bracket (I think Its 4 screws and set bracket aside (you wont need it anymore). I found the best place to relocate the screen was the center console as it fit almost perfect, using cardboard to make a pattern I fabricated a surround for the blue screen out of MDS and covered it in gray vinyl and glued the screen in it permanently connected the connector in the screen and volia. As for a suggested screen I used a cheap china 5" android GPS for the first install but have since changed it as those don't come with Bluetooth and you WILL want that! ...lol. I used a repurposed android phone an LG intuition as my new carputer as it can do everything, it has built in GPS, it has wifi so I can use my current phone as a hotspot to stream Pandora, I can download music to it hand have it always on hand, it plays video, internet if needed (with hotspot),and BLUETOOTH. but you can use any 5" android or IOS if you wish, should fit anything larger ..not without modification Bluetooth is cool cause youll want to play music from your existing phone and you can purchase a Bluetooth OBDII connector from ebay $6 and now you can have it talk to you cars computer providing lie updates of engine performance not to mention you can clear some of those pesky check engine codes
Great work buddy, i live in Calgary, Canada but i am willing to make the 2 day long drive if you are willing to help me do this on my Rx300. If you can make a video on how to do this from scratch that would be awesome and will help a lot of us.
Do the wire from the bk of the radio have all the same setting like wire to the speaker so I can just get the speaker wire to run to my new harness I just need the speaker wire
yes from the plug in the harness all wires are color coded I believe you can use speaker wire if you choose youre just extending the harness another 4 feet and running it under the carpet to the center console or where ever you choose
Jaime, In my installation instructions I noted the type of tablet/GPS, it can be found on ebay, at the time I bought mine they were $100, No extra bezel was added as screen was an almost exact fit
Could you give some detail on how you extended the wires? I am trying to do this: i.ytimg.com/vi/I-ivC_CzaZw/maxresdefault.jpg but i want to swap exsisting Navigation down and aftermarket up. I would get rid of existing navigation but lexus is notorious for making climate control part of the touch screen.
there is a connector that goes directly into the navi screen 14/16 gauge wire from any auto parts store or Walmart should do the trick, remove the connector from screen cut the wires one by one so as not to get them mixed up, splice into each with wire long enough to reach down to aftermarket opening below I twisted my wires then heat shrunk them. move the unit down move unit new unit up, I'm not sure how you'll mount the Navi in the after market spot but maybe you have that figured out already. Good luck!
what year is your lexus RX300, as min is different from the RX in this photo and im not sure what your connector or connectors look like, I guess you'll just have to take the bezel off and look behind it. but being in such close proximity I would think youd be able to stretch it down to that spot
that was a 5"tablet in there that was three years ago I've since used a LG Intuition (5.0") and I'm currently using a Nexus 6, and I that is the largest and by far the best fit
hey love the mod, i noticed that there might have been a steering wheel cover on the wheel of the car and i was just wondering where you got it. I want one for my car. If its not a cover then thats ok , Great video anyway

Brilliant!
I was looking for something else when I came across this modification. Now, I have to get this done!
some guy in Taiwan are selling an Android AV system with navigation , which completely replaces the original display.
I have thought of this but never done it. Nice job!!
Thanks for the positive comments. thinking of other mods like the turn signals etc, again looking as stock as possible is the challenge

not a problem, let me know
if you use a iPhone X or 11 it fits perfectly in there, wouldn’t even fall off

+William Kent I know this video is a couple years old but have you ever relocated the buttons that set just below the blue screen?
+DIYtryGUY there was no need to, to relocate the buttons themselves would require a ribbon cable extension
hello please how to transplant the sound of the screen on the car audio system thank you in advance
I'm impressed!
How much to do mine like that
some guy in Taiwan are selling an Android AV system with navigation , which completely replaces the original display.
