The main character of the song is a woman who lost her husband during the forced colonial era. The husband was an independence fighter but was shot dead by the ruthless Japanese military, and the woman who was waiting for her husband alone sobbed all night at the news. The composer who heard this pathetic cry made this song. The title of the song is Tumen River, where the woman committed suicide in the river later. In the video, Song So-hee takes off her shoes because Koreans usually take off their shoes when they commit suicide. 😭and the stage includes some (sad) meanings.. 1. tied hair : she is a married woman 2. white clothes : she is in deep sorrow(or in mourning) 3. her neatly organized shoes : she is going to kill herself because she thinks her husband is already dead(wanna follow him). ※ in old korean stories, laid shoes indicate someone killed or is going to kill oneself by jumping from high places or into water etc.
Thank you so much for the explanation. Wow, it's very sad...She does an exceptional job transmitting the emotions through this song. Once again, thank you soooo much
@@MrBrigs123 yes, its astonishing how she can sing her heart out as if she herself went through the pain, she was in her early 20 when she sang this song
she was 18 in this, but has successfully delivered the song perfectly and emotionally, she looked like she was the main character of this song, which is the woman who lost her husband and then commited suicide....
Contemporary pansori should be what’s being exported the most from Korea. This is our culture. This is real Korean music. It takes more than talent to sing like this. It takes a lifetime of training. You can grab your best western vocalist and they wouldn’t even begin to know where to start to have the vibrato and cadence of pansori singers. The emotion one feels beyond language is what we call in Korea “Han”. It’s a collective pain of generational trauma from Koreas tumultuous history. We wear the suffering of our parents and grandparents and ancestors as a badge of honor. We carry on the emotion in our traditional songs. May we never forget the spirit of Arirang and may we share our “Han” with the world.
Song Sohee her performance of this song style is 'Min-Yo'. She is a 'Min-Yo' singer. There are "Min-Yo' and 'Pansori' In Korean traditional Gugak music. 'Pansori' is like 'Opera', and 'Min-Yo' is classical national mosic, so they are different genres(fields).
Preparing for taking her own life, leaving her shoes the site, sitting down on the ground, this Korean lady mourned, cried out and poured out her sorrow and agony before throwing herself into the river, missing her husband who been killed by Japanese soldiers.
Like flamenco singing....emotional & sad....so sad if you knew the story.. Traditionally in Korean culture you wear white when someone dies....mourning
This song is Korean old pop(1930s), and her skill in singing is not that of these days, but that of traditional Korean, which we call it “Pansori” singing style. As it were, we may say that the performance is crossover.
What a pity~ It is a fact that everyone who lived in the Korean Peninsula knew that this song was sung by the people of whole nation resenting the Japanese imperialists during the Japanese colonial period... Do you not know how hard it was at that time... The innocent people of Joseon(Korea) lived and died helplessly because of the brutal atrocities of the Japanese army???
