Translation: This song is from 1938, which was when Korea was still occupied by Japan. The musician composed the song after hearing the cries of a 29 year old (wife of an independence fighter) who had just found out that her husband had been murdered. Many Koreans were able to relate to this at the time because many had had a similar experience. The song was sung when a citizen missed their country that had been taken away from them, an immigrant missed their home country, and when someone missed their loved ones who had passed away.
Korean traditional music "Gugak" is really amazing and unique. They truly use their voices as instruments. Song Sohee is like a national treasure in Korea because despite being very young(born in 1997) she dedicated herself to keep this music alive and to get it recognized. She has been studying Gugak since she was 5 years old. She is wonderful.
This song is really sad... 😭 It is about a left woman. Her husband somehow has gone across Duman river so she was waiting for him but doesnt know when or whether he could actually come back. So she misses him so desperately. never know why he has gone but can guess it happened in accident(with no intent) because the song was made when Korea was colonized by Japan. 😭and the stage includes some (sad) meanings.. 1. tied hair : she is a married woman 2. white clothes : she is in deep sorrow(or in mourning) 3. her neatly organized shoes : she is going to kill herself becuase she thinks her husband is already dead(wanna follow him). ※ in old korean stories, laid shoes indicate someone killed or is going to kill oneself by jumping from high places or into water etc. 😭she is singing her(or whole Korean people in that period) heartburnings in Korean traditional way of singing.. sad..!
Thank you so much for the explanation! I start watching Song SoHee a while ago, and her singing is mind blowing! This one left me in tears, and I did not understand what is this about - obviously something very sad and painful. Her voice control is phenomenal...
many korean husbands and sons were killed by japanese soldiers. young men were also forcibly taken by the japanese army and sent to war. it is a song about the tears of the wives left behind and tears of the women holding the bodies of their dead husbands in their hearts.
For those who wonder about the technique of her style, the bravado and switching between notes is called the "bell" technique. It requires special training and talent, So-hee is a master at it and has been designated as a living national treasure of Korean culture. Truly a gifted performer, even when you don't know the words the emotion will captivate you!
Song Sohee her performance of this song is 'Min-Yo'. There are "Min-Yo' and 'Pansori' In Korean traditional Gugak music. 'Pansori' is like 'Opera', and 'Min-Yo' is classical national mosic, so they are different genres(fields).
I have same reaction when I first heard this singing technique, they called it Gugak according to the wiki, there's a unique story telling mystery to it that brings more emotion to the listener, this is coming from someone who doesn't understand korean language but I love it.
I heard that this song was written by an writer after listening to an widow screeming from her husband's death. It was 1983 and Korea was taken by Japan at that moment. The husband was murdered by a drunken Japanese soldier. That's why this song sounds so tragic.
What's cool about Sohee and gugak singers is that they practice a skill to not let out breathing sounds in between notes so you don't hear Sohee intaking breath in between her notes. That's why it sounds so clear and perfect like it's been edited out
The main character of the song is a woman who lost her husband during the forced colonial era. The husband was an independence fighter but was shot dead by the ruthless Japanese military, and the woman who was waiting for her husband alone sobbed all night at the news. The composer who heard this pathetic cry made this song. The title of the song is Tumen River, where the woman committed suicide in the river later. In the video, Song So-hee takes off her shoes because Koreans usually take off their shoes when they commit suicide.

That is the very old style of Korean singing sound. It might be 1000 years ago.. I am not sure it is much longer. Even Korean can not because there is a very special hard vocal training. Not typical vocal training.
You need to react to the immortal song duet between song songhee and ko younggyeol for "this is goodbye"! They are both amazing traditional vocalist and their duet was insane!

Korean were nomad moving circles in Eurasia before we settled in Korean Peninsula. Traditionally wear white clothes which used to symbolized Xiamen(priests) or someone linked(?) with sky? god? stars?. We share many similar words with Mongolia, minority group in India, Kazakhstan.. etc.. Doman river is in N. Korea. She sings about the sorrow of parting.
Fyi she took off her shoes not becauze she wants to be comfortable but it was a kind of tradition to leave your shoes behind when you throw yourself in water to commit suicide...T.T
Her name is not Song. Her first name is So Hee and last name is Song. She can sing like that because she was specially trained the way of Korean traditional singing.
She is a genius singer who sings Korean traditional music Pansori in a modern way. She is a cool artist who mastered everything at a young age and enjoys modern music.
"Bang-ul-mok," also known as "ringing throat," is a distinctive vocal technique used by Korean traditional folk singers, called "minyo meisters." This technique creates a clear, bell-like resonance in the voice, producing a vibrating sound that adds depth and emotion to the song. It’s especially effective in conveying the poignant and sometimes sorrowful emotions often found in Korean folk music. Characteristics of Bang-ul-mok Bang-ul-mok is characterized by a shimmering, trembling quality in the singer’s voice, akin to the sound of a bell. This technique involves subtle modulation and control of the voice, adding a unique vibrato that enhances the emotional expression in the music. It’s particularly prominent in songs that deal with themes of yearning, nostalgia, or joy. The Rigorous Training Process of Minyo Meisters Foundation in Vocal Training: From a young age, minyo meisters begin their training with basic vocal exercises. They learn correct breathing techniques and voice projection to build a strong, stable voice. Voice Control Mastery: Developing the Bang-ul-mok technique requires precise control over the voice. Singers practice controlling the amplitude and frequency of vocal vibrations, which involves the coordination of muscles in the throat, chest, and abdomen. Emotional Expression: A crucial part of mastering Bang-ul-mok is learning to convey deep emotional content through song. Singers study the lyrics and stories behind the music to fully grasp the emotions they need to express, be it sorrow, joy, or longing. Advanced Vocal Techniques: The Bang-ul-mok technique often requires handling high pitches with finesse. Minyo meisters engage in extensive training to ensure they can maintain clarity and stability even at the upper end of their vocal range. This training process is often long and demanding, involving not only physical conditioning but also a deep emotional and intellectual engagement with the music. The result is a vocal technique that is not just about sound, but about conveying a rich cultural and emotional narrative through song.
It is normal vocal skill in korea. Pansori or Gugak is traditional and normal vocal skill. It expresses "deep missing mind and stresses" toward lovers or world.

After hearing the news that her husband, an independence activist, had died after leaving for Manchuria (China), she took off her shoes( mean suicide fallow husband)and sang a song in front of the river he passed by before she died.

😭and the stage includes some (sad) meanings..
1. tied hair : she is a married woman
2. white clothes : she is in deep sorrow(or in mourning)
3. her neatly organized shoes : she is going to kill herself becuase she thinks her husband is already dead(wanna follow him).
※ in old korean stories, laid shoes indicate someone killed or is going to kill oneself by jumping from high places or into water etc.

So beautiful 😍😭
Excelente reacción, felicidades.
Have you seen Song Sohee collaborating with Forestella? Please check out 'Beautiful Country'. Amazing!
She specializes "Gugak" (traditional korean music), she was known as Gugak Prodigy.
That is the very old style of Korean singing sound. It might be 1000 years ago.. I am not sure it is much longer. Even Korean can not because there is a very special hard vocal training. Not typical vocal training.
와우.
I love song sohee
You need to react to the immortal song duet between song songhee and ko younggyeol for "this is goodbye"! They are both amazing traditional vocalist and their duet was insane!

Korean were nomad moving circles in Eurasia before we settled in Korean Peninsula. Traditionally wear white clothes which used to symbolized Xiamen(priests) or someone linked(?) with sky? god? stars?. We share many similar words with Mongolia, minority group in India, Kazakhstan.. etc..

"She took off her slippers, she nice and comfy" :D
Me- No, she prepping to commit die lol
She is a genius singer who sings Korean traditional music Pansori in a modern way. She is a cool artist who mastered everything at a young age and enjoys modern music.
"Bang-ul-mok," also known as "ringing throat," is a distinctive vocal technique used by Korean traditional folk singers, called "minyo meisters." This technique creates a clear, bell-like resonance in the voice, producing a vibrating sound that adds depth and emotion to the song. It’s especially effective in conveying the poignant and sometimes sorrowful emotions often found in Korean folk music.
Characteristics of Bang-ul-mok
Bang-ul-mok is characterized by a shimmering, trembling quality in the singer’s voice, akin to the sound of a bell. This technique involves subtle modulation and control of the voice, adding a unique vibrato that enhances the emotional expression in the music. It’s particularly prominent in songs that deal with themes of yearning, nostalgia, or joy.
The Rigorous Training Process of Minyo Meisters
Foundation in Vocal Training: From a young age, minyo meisters begin their training with basic vocal exercises.
Song sohee - This is goodbye
It is a traditional Korean style of singing.
I love Pansori. It hits you right through the heart.
She is a Minyo singer, Minyo is a totally different genre to Pansori.
She is not pansori.
The Call -
Profound and beautiful
She's such an amazing talent. You should take a listen/watch her performance of "Tomorrow" th-cam.com/video/DpJTrdZKNVc/w-d-xo.html And her duet of "This is Goodbye" with Ko Youngyeol th-cam.com/video/PT6G10DRHWQ/w-d-xo.html You're going to love it.

“ she took off her shoes, she’s all comfortable now “ 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Wrong !
Asian cultures are never this casual.
Its symbolic.
Comfortable enough to take her own life as the story goes. 🥺😭😭😭
I thought the rest of World won't listen to Gugak style saying Koreans have old-fashioned cheesy taste. xD

I recommend pansori and folk songs, traditional Korean music.
Ok , I don’t understand Korean , but that’s the most tragic thing I’ve heard.
The Fairy of Pansori , traditional korean singing
Song Sohee her performance of this song style is 'Min-Yo'. She is a 'Min-Yo' singer. There are "Min-Yo' and 'Pansori' In Korean traditional Gugak music. 'Pansori' is like 'Opera', and 'Min-Yo' is classical national mosic, so they are different genres(fields).
sing a song so hee. Black spiritual(soul) and Korean's heartburnings are alike.
After hearing the news that her husband, an independence activist, had died after leaving for Manchuria (China), she took off her shoes( mean suicide fallow husband)and sang a song in front of the river he passed by before she died.
Her name is Sohee not Song. Song is her surname!
Gukak mean korean music
Hello Sir please make a reaction to 'OO' of Ms. Elaine Duran, thank you so much sir🙏❣️
