I’m born and raised on Maui. Great video, very informative. The respectful tips at the end were the cherry on top. AND LET ME ADD IF ITS WHALE SEASON DO NOT SLOW DOWN KNOW THE ROAD JUST PULL OVER.
Best tips I’ve heard, people very rarely think that Hawaii can be cold, and freeze when they go up to Haleakala. As someone who grew up on Haleakala, I can attest to this: it gets cold! Also thanks for talking about petty crime: the nicer your rental car, the more likely you are to be robbed. Just get a regular car, and pay attention to the locals in the area, they know which areas are more tourist oriented (and that's where you get robbed). There’s no one to show off to in Maui, anyway. That being said, enjoy our island!
I'm really glad you mentioned the be safe point. I slipped on a rock there and scraped the back of my head really bad. Was having a fever due to infection during the whole trip and couldn't get into the water again, and had a mild concussion as well. Hawaii was so beautiful and I only got in the water on the first day and that was it... The hospital bills were more than what I spent on the trip...
I just love your attitude, very informative as always. You bring me so much good energy and motivation to my life. I travel 300+ days a year and I always have to watch your videos before I'm heading to a new destination.
We would buy groceries and check them as luggage. Even with baggage fees it was still cheaper than shopping in Maui. Brought lots of booze and other stuff. We were the hit of the pupu with our Boboli pizzas, pulled pork and Ghirardelli brownies. Chicken is super expensive, beef not as much, I guess because they raise some cattle there. Condo with a kitchen is the way to go
I learned the hard way about wading into the water barefoot. There are plenty of beach rocks and stubbing your toe is no fun. Now I wear dive boots anytime I go into the water. High top canvas shoes are good too, but way more expensive.
Hi Chris, wanted to say this - THANK YOU! I had see most of your Maui videos before me and my husband visited Maui in the week of March 3. Your advice was very helpful from food (Cheap eats!), to clothing, to where and when to visit. I think our experience in Maui was made even better because of your inputs. And yes, you weren’t kidding when you spoke about the single lane roads! Hope to see your videos about Japan when we visit next year! Keep up the awesome work. We appreciate it. (And yes, you are terribly cute!)
Glad to hear you had a great to Maui... did you do the road to Hana? It is truly amazing how narrow some of those roads are! And I hope you enjoy Japan as well! (*blush*)
Yes, we did do the road to Hana. It poured all the way! But we did buy a Gypsy Hana App, which works on your geographical location - it provided commentary, Hawaiian history and information about when to stop and where to park. :)
At first my thinking was "great another haole (a word that means any foreigner not just a white person) butchering my mother language and giving tips." BUT after listening to the whole video, I must say kudos to you sir. Lots of good tips. Its baffling how many people come here thinking its all good times and sunshine and they get their plans rained on. The part I really appreciate is the ending. #ProtectTheLand because this may be some peoples vacation but this is my paradise and home. I have no where else if I lose this island. Mahalo.
I normally don’t burn from the sun. Only on my shoulders, for head , and some parts of my face. But very rarely. I want to live in Hawaii when I’m older.
I don't know for your hawiaan pronunciation but i am french and i can say that your enghish pronunciation is awesome , really good because i understand everythings you say, thank you , you make a great job and you seems to be a verry kind person 👍💕
hi yellow productions its 11pm and im watching ur videos. please keep making videos on hawaii, going there next week, staying in the westin.... BTW u should do a vido in waikiki. .... .... pls reply i will be happy ...
Love Maui and everything about it. My first trip there we drove to Hana. Didn't think anything about the rain, I had read up on Maui and knew there would be rain in that area. Beautiful drive, unforgettable day. Next morning we read the paper and the road had flooded virtually behind us. A couple on their honeymoon had spent the night in a tree. So, when he says be prepared for changing weather------be prepared for changing weather.
As a local I appreciate you mentioning to drivers to pull over to allow the locals through on the way to and from Hana. Especially when ones sightseeing holds up traffic.
Another tip: Locals don't lock their cars because broken windows are expensive to replace. Better to leave your car unlocked with nothing in it. Thieves see a locked car and bust the window to search since they know you must be a tourist and have valuables inside.I lived in Maui for 12 years.
If they are gonna steal your car, whether the door is locked or not won't stop it. They can load your stuff on a tow truck if they want it. Might as well leave the door unlocked with nothing to steal inside. Or park where there are a lot of eyes, and UBER to your destination.
That’s bullshit! We lock our cars. We don’t have the damn rental car sticker bar code that screams tourists to thieves nor de we leave baggage in the passenger seat like some of the idiots that visit!
+Sandy Rhodes Average highs of 84 and lows in the 60's. March is one of the rainy months. But on average it's only 2.5 inches of rain for the month in the resort areas
The one thing I would add..Even though we did rent a car, I am into photography. We took a tour van around Hana. Why? The tour people know where all the turn outs are. They Live, and Drive that highway probably every day. They can show you where some of the best views are. It is a rewarding feeling to not have to watch traffic, while looking for places to turn off, possibly missing something significant. The downside is, You are on their schedule. If they stop for 15 min, maybe you would like 30? well that's the way it is brudda. To sum it up. About all I had to worry about was camera equipment, and getting the scenery on memory stick. I know I would have missed it if I was driving, watching the road. 617 hairpin curves and 59 unforgiving one-lane bridges, not to mention an incredible number of blind spots along the way. And, since the speed limit is 25 mph or less the entire way, that puts the drive time, (with few to no stops), averaging about 2.5 hours - and that’s without encountering any traffic or other diversions. Hang loose
Hi Willie, Thanks for the tips! While I haven't done a van tour of the Road to Hana... I could see how that would be nice... and yes, with me driving, I was only paying attention to the road, and not the scenery!
Great tips! I'll keep these in mind when I decide to visit Maui someday. Although the afternoon winds aren't the greatest for snorkeling, at least they provide a great opportunity to relax in a hammock with the cool breeze (with sunscreen of course)!
Yeah, uh, no. I try Kaanapali and even Haleakala. But the Hawaiian State Fish? No. I would not insult the language by trying again. Did a couple of times----in the condo. In public, no way. Lady told me I did really well with Haleakala for a Wahine. I had to look that one up and was hoping it didn't mean "stupid dumbass".
I was considering visiting Maui, but from the comments I'm reading, the locals do not sound welcoming at all. In fact, you sound downright pompous and rude.
I have been to Maui about 8 times and never have had a bad encounter with a local. Just be respectful and most will respect you. Anywhere you go these days, there are rude people. You can't let a few bad apples ruin it for you.
Mgoldenboyz I live in a town with a lot of tourism and being surrounded by sacred land. I know exactly how you feel. Walking with their heads in the clouds. When my family and I go in September we promise not to be like that. Respect, it’s easy.
The reason pronunciation matters is that its a matter of respect. Tourist crap on the islanders all the time in many ways. Pronouncing things correctly pays respect to the people. Its also the professional thing to do. Don't be like those other tourists please. Hall-E-ak-law phoentics

Actually there are some really good tips here. I would emphasize a few things, among those being that Maui IS NOT Disneyland. It can be dangerous and like you MEANT to say in the video, people overestimate their abilities both snorkeling and hiking. When hiking in or near streams, people need to be aware of flash flooding which is very common. It is also common for people to get swept out to sea by rogue waves when standing on lava rocks near the shore. Don't stand on coral. Don't touch the turtles or I'll personally drown you. Finally, respect the land and police your trash, you filthy mainlanders.
You trying to say Hawaiian people don't leave shit around too😛👎. Please buddy everyone is capable of good or bad. No need for disrespect. I could just as well insulted you weak people. Annoying isn't it.
I like your guides, however you should please try to pronounce Hawaiian words a little more correctly. You are way off on some of them... Haleakala, Kaanapali etc.
Yellow Productions YA but soooo easy to confirm pronunciations by talking to any local. We discovered that on our first day and we do not have a TH-cam channel promoting travel. Investigate pls....gives you more credibility & therefore more viewers. LOVE LOVE MAUI!
Good tips! Learn the right pronunciations. It really takes away from your video. U have 85000 views and I only have a few thousand, so what do I know. #Mauinormalliving.
GLAD YOU CAN READ A BROCHURE ABOUT OUR ISLAND. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT MAUI THEN ASK A LOCAL! NO WATCH OR LISTEN TO A VISITOR, LISTEN TO A LOCAL THEY WILL KNOW THE INS AND OUTS. MOST IMPORTANT RULE OF THUMB IS....... NO PISS OFF THE LOCALS IT COULD BE HAZARDOUS. JUST A LITTLE F.Y.I.
man you butchered Haleakala, its pronounced just like it reads. Ha-le-aka-la, & I cringed @ Kaanapali. Another great tip would be - Be respectful of locals, don't bring your entitled pretentious little attitude to the island, I don't give a shit how much money you spent to come here or how much your hotel cost - leave the tude on the mainland.
Thanks the pronunciation type on Haleakala.. you're going to cringe at my Haleakala video then because I've already recorded that one... but I'll be sure to pronounce it right on the next trip! Thanks!
22techies great response! I just got back days ago and went to several of these places...on the road to Hana I went to the Garden of Eden. One of the things they asked for was for visitors not to carve their names...initials in the beautiful plants...and people did...I am sure they were not all from the main island. It's hard to disrespect the land...if you are a decent human being. I saw people taking sand from the black sand beach...it's ridiculous how disrespectful people can be. BTW I totally enjoyed it and became one with the Mother of the Islands
You can surely speak English, but, if you're going to pronounce Hawaiian words it would be good to learn the proper pronunciation. Your not doing that destroys your credibility.
It doesn’t bother those of us who don’t know the correct pronunciation to begin with. Who even cares? The point is to get some good tips and that’s it.
Why do you care? What is important is whether the information was conveyed. You don't see people from the mainland go nuts if Schenectady or Boerne is mispronounced.
I'm considering next September/Oct how is the weather at that time? Also I enjoyed your video your very chipper and ready to answer questions the best of your knowledge. Ive watched enough Dogthebounty hunter to be warned about the drug and theft problems there..so im curious how much rental company will charge me for a low life busting the window..
+Alpha Gerudo October is my favorite time to go to Hawaii -- it's usually not too busy, and the weather is usually good in that they get some trade winds to cool things down, and not too much rain.
We stayed in Haiku in November of 2015 and it was lovely! Even when it rained, it was so nice! I live in Canada so it was amazing to stand on the North shore to do a little fishing (which is free for anyone by the way, even tourists) and it rained and I didn't mind a tiny bit. The rain stopped 5 minutes later and I was dry very quickly after that. No fish but who cares! It's Maui, fishing on the shore at 5am and it was great! Maui No Ka Oi!
I’m born and raised on Maui. Great video, very informative. The respectful tips at the end were the cherry on top. AND LET ME ADD IF ITS WHALE SEASON DO NOT SLOW DOWN KNOW THE ROAD JUST PULL OVER.

Yellow Productions I had a fantastic time on the Road to Hana tour with Valley Isle Excursions. The owners and the drivers are all amazing people.
Spot ON! I know the owner and most of the guides(drivers), they really impart Hawaiian culture during the journey to Hana. Great recommendation.
Going on honeymoon in 2 weeks. Top 3 tips for this time of year?
Enjoy enjoy and enjoy :)
Thanks for the video! :)
Thanks Stephanie!
Do you HAVE to rent a car? I'm thinking of going solo to Maui. 26 year old guy here
You don't HAVE to.. there is bus service.. but it's extremely limited. I would highly recommend renting a car
Great tips! I'll keep these in mind when I decide to visit Maui someday. Although the afternoon winds aren't the greatest for snorkeling, at least they provide a great opportunity to relax in a hammock with the cool breeze (with sunscreen of course)!
That's true! The winds are good for staying cool!
I live in Hana and it only takes 1 hour to drive there
Yes..us tourist slow pokes don't know the road as well as you do :)
do you suggest to rent a car
Yes... definitely rent a car in Maui
Or Uber

What's the best month to visit there ???
I think October is pretty good. After the summer crowds, and before the winter crowds.
I am a resident of Maui-your tips are pretty good and accurate, but you pronounce all the Hawaian names wrong, like Kaanapali and Haleakala.
+Julia Sochnikova Thanks Julia! Yeah.. Hawaiian is a tough pronunciation for me.
Wait until you try to say the name of the Hawaiian State Fish.
Yeah, uh, no. I try Kaanapali and even Haleakala. But the Hawaiian State Fish? No. I would not insult the language by trying again. Did a couple of times----in the condo. In public, no way. You only get one mother and life is short.

JAY N DEE Why would I ask a local? From the comments I'm reading here, you sound pretty rude.
man you butchered Haleakala, its pronounced just like it reads.
Thanks!
;)
22techies great response! I just got back days ago and went to several of these places...on the road to Hana I went to the Garden of Eden. One of the things they asked for was for visitors not to carve their names...initials in the beautiful plants...and people did...I am sure they were not all from the main island. It's hard to disrespect the land...if you are a decent human being. I saw people taking sand from the black sand beach...it's ridiculous how disrespectful people can be. BTW I totally enjoyed it and became one with the Mother of the Islands
you sound weird
You can surely speak English, but, if you're going to pronounce Hawaiian words it would be good to learn the proper pronunciation. Your not doing that destroys your credibility.
Says the person with Grammatical Errors. Hypocrite much?
It doesn’t bother those of us who don’t know the correct pronunciation to begin with. Who even cares? The point is to get some good tips and that’s it.
...maybe learn how to pronounce the places of which you speak; Bra....
