My husband and I are coming to your island for the first time (staying in Ka’anapali). I came upon your videos just today, many were from before the fires. I am happy to hear you’re ok and my sincere condolences for the losses you and your community have suffered. We will do our best to support locals and be sensitive to their monumental loss when we are there this December for a few weeks. I’ve made a long list of your recommendations to look into (thanks for sharing). We will definitely bring the reef safe sunscreen too. ❤ Aloha ❤

Very well said. We were there 1 week after the fires. We almost changed our plans and went to a different island, but we did not. We went and we supported everything local. Many food trucks, local car rental company in kehei and a local photographer for family pictures.
Everyone was amazing and very thankful that we were there and did not cancel. Thank you for sharing your beautiful island. I'm glad you look to be doing good and are back to doing your videos.
    Thank you!

What I like about this is that you provide reasonable advice to those of us who cherish those special moments we can and have had in Maui. We were amongst the last tourists to have been able to enjoy Lahaina, having flown out the Saturday before the devastating wildfires. Our friends we were with that glorious week in Wailua flew out the Tuesday that the wildfires broke out. We've been many times to Maui and have always had a place in our hearts for your wonderful Maui, your people, culture and breathtaking natural beauty. For us, Maui has always been an amazing gift and a respite from life's travails. After we returned to the mainland so soon after those wildfires and the realization that what we've been so blessed to appreciate, we felt not just saddened, but guilty. Those feelings were intensified by local responses, particularly from politicians and media surrounding these horrible events. At the same time, we've felt guilty that by not supporting the locals, which we've always prioritized, we've failed to support such a truly amazing people and place. Your thoughtful suggestions give us hope that we'll be welcome again and encouraged to partake in the Aloha spirit. It's about respect and that's mutual. Hoping to visit soon.

Great video. Thank you for the reminders and tips and volunteer opportunity information. Maui is beautiful :) I visited with my family for the first time back in April. We were mindful of reefsafe sunscreen and tried to shop local and be mindful of where our money was going We visited the Ali'i Kula Lavender farm. We visited the Makawao Library and Kihei Library. We ate at Tin Roof Maui, had Kraken Coffee, Aunty Sandy's Banana bread, Akamai Coffee, Kihei Cafe - most delicious pancakes, had pies at Leoda's. We shopped at Uptown Farmers Market, Kula Farmers Market and Swap Meet - they had so many vendors for fruit/veggies. We made leis with a local (Maricel's Floral Designs) and had family photos with Desi Eddy Nova Photography. We definitely felt the Aloha spirit and are thankful we could visit. We had some leftover non perishable food and a local was able to donate it to a church. We hope to visit Maui again. If anything, a library is a great source/place to talk and ask what else you can do/where you can help in Maui during this time.

Very well said. Your vid was extremely well thoughtful and kind and considerate. My wife and I respect the island when we go and always eat locally from the people on the island. We love farmer’s markets. We are limited in our resources so can’t be there for a few years. We have been to the island like 8 times. Maui is more than an island. It’s a person. A person who loves and cares for other people. I’m Maui is a person who is beautiful and shares its beauty with everyone who sees it. Maui, above all, is a strong person. Maui will not let a tragic fire take it down. Maui did hurt, did cry, is still crying, but……Maui will flourish. Maui will be smiling once again.

Thank you for this video. I desperately want to visit Maui for the first time but I’ve heard that locals aren’t ready and others saying tourists are needed. I listened in on the town hall meeting regarding the phasing out of the short term rentals. I wanted to visit before that might happen but not if I would cause more harm than good. So this video helps.

I’m very fortunate enough to have visited maui the last 3 years. We always stopped by Lahaina whenever we visited and made some great memories. All the chickens roaming around, great local eats around there, wonderful boutique stores to do some shopping, and the harbor where we signed up for a snorkeling boat tour and sunset cruise. I want to visit Maui again this year because we love the beautiful island so much and it’s wonderful. Thank you for the great video Blake!

I am so sorry for what happened and my heart breaks for the people who are suffering. After watching the video, I really feel hesitant to even be there now. I am a very compassionate person but feel like you are assuming so many people coming to visit are selfish and uncaring. That is so sad. I am there only overnight. You keep talking about being respectful like you feel we are just normally disrespectful people. I think those of us traveling together will just go off ship and find a local business and then get back on the ship so we are not offending you with our presence. You must have experienced some very disrespectful tourist and now feel like those of us coming are just all disrespectful and must be taught how to be good compassionate people. I am so sorry this is how you seem to feel.I hope things get better in Maui. I think Hawaii is a very special place and I am so sorry for what happened to your home.

I am here in Maui right now and I love supporting local businesses, but honestly the we just went to a food truck and they charged almost $30 for one meal. For that price I would have rather went to a sit down restaurant. Then we tried the Farmers Market and the prices there we so high it was a not even funny. We did buy an Apple Crumble at the restaurant next to it, $10 for the crumble and another $5 for banana bread was fine for me. I am not a cheap person but I am not going to just give my money away.
I do pray and hope that the people were affect in Maui to find peace and my heart does go out to them. Respect does go a long way.

Unfortunately the government and big business has ruined this beautiful place. Huge hotels and resorts cart billions of dollars out of the state while the homeless population grows by the day. We won't return. My heart breaks for the Hawaiian people, much love. Mahalo
