oh yes I do that ! But I often search by "hot right now" and sadly they never make their way to the top of the list lol but im trying to do less trendy things anyways
Nice goals! I liked how you thought of using more complex / time-consuming knits as a way to slow down and at the same time supply yourself with enough knitting moments for the year. I think you will do really good in it. The seasonal colouring palette goal is also awesome! You definitely look like a staple Light Summer, whenever you picked colours from this palette unintentionally for your knits last year they definitely suited you. I'm a big defender of the 12 seasons system, even though I know it can be limiting, especially for PoC, depending on the approach. But the seasonal palettes can provide great guidance, and when I started following mine (Dark Winter), it made all the difference in my wardrobe. This and the Truth is Beauty system are my favourite resource for style things. So yes, I stick to it when picking yarn for knitwear. I think the vast majority of knitwear samples are made in colours that suit the Autumn palettes (muted & warm), and I always observe in a pattern if I can successfully adapt it to my colours without it being a detriment to the design. Sometimes changing from warm and muted to cool and bright totally changes the "message" of the garment; but sometimes it goes very well, like I think I managed to do with my Stripes! by DRK. Besides the level of value contrast and the actual shades that suit each season, we also have the colour contrast, that is, the number of colours that one can wear without detriment to their beauty. Winter has very low tolerance for that, so I tend to stick to 2-colour colourwork, or at most degrades with the different shades of the same colour. If I'm not mistaken, Summer (and Autumn) have much more freedom in it, so I bet Marie Wallin designs and other fair isle classics would look amazing on you. Good thing you plan to knit more of her designs! Good luck in fulfilling your 2024 knitting goals! I have faith you will, you give the impression of being a very focused person
Vanissia you're so cool! Love how self-aware you are, and how you share so openly to normalise introspection for us all 🥰 W.r.t. FOMO purchases, one thing that helps me (especially with patterns) is to really only buy them once I'm committed to knitting it ~next. And what helps with *that* is knowing that the number of patterns in the world is strictly increasing, so even if I'm sure I want the beautiful sweater released this week, if I wait until I'm ready to start to buy the pattern, there might already be another released that I'm even more drawn to :) And then I personally try to wait to purchase yarns once I have the exact project planned for them, but I know some people prefer to let the yarn inspire the project ✨ But yeah I guess the basic principle is that delaying purchases gives me the freedom to choose from all the cool stuff that'll be available x months down the line
thank you!! that helps so much, and so true about the number of patterns and yarns only ever increasing, so what's the rush ! I definitely only buy when i have a project planned for it, but that doesnt help, as i can plan fast, but knit slower aha. But i think it could be good to really try and buy before im ready to cast on next !!
I also want to slow down my production. I have 7 sweaters that I've knit for myself that I love, and several more that I don't (but still wear). I don't need as many sweaters, socks, and shawls as I have and want to knit. I'm thinking that I'm going to repurpose some of the things I've already knit, either by frogging and reknitting things that I like more, cutting up sweaters to make pillow covers and draft stoppers, and donating things that are machine washable to homeless shelters. It's really been on my mind lately that I have way more than I need.
Slowing down has been a goal of mine as well. I have been feeling bad that I don’t knit more plain sweaters, because I knit complicated things. But it helps keep me engaged with color work and cables or textures. They do take longer, and I have figured out that it works best for me! ❤
that's really good to spend more time on things ! I definitely enjoyed making sweaters in 2 weeks before, but now I'm kinda craving some meditating work !
At Knit City Vancouver this fall, I ended up sitting on the cement floor, at the feet of an older lady who had bought some eye-catching spinning fiber. We just started talking and I felt like we were good friends an hour later, and I had some advice for my newish spinning education. That was the absolute best part of the festival. So I agree it’s not all about the hand-dyed yarn!
aw that's so wholesome !! I remember chatting away to people in the queue to one of the festivals, just bonding over knitwear even if we had nothing in common ! There is so much to take from these events !
You absolutely read as a summer! Color analysis has made my enthusiasm as an artist skyrocket ❤😊 I love when people are able to see objectively that colors can really work or not work for them and I also love when people choose to break the rules out of personal freedom too ❤❤
It takes will power to slow down I am finding. The fear of missing out is a big thing too. I have decided to stop buying because I have thousands of dollars in my stash just sitting doing nothing. My goal is to use this and only buy if required to make a specific thing - which is not often as I have the yarn in my stash - so far so good lol. I love all your ideas and plans. Very well thought out.
Such a nice video, and certainly not too long - it's lovely to hear all the thinking you do behind your goals! I have that weird Dutch hair colour which is the darkness of brown but not the shade (started out light blonde as a toddler, and then just kept going darker and darker) with dark blue eyes, so I do really well with mid to dark blues, greens and greys. I also like those shades so much that at a certain point I started a "knit something that isn't blue or grey" challenge :> It was partly a success in that I have a beautiful burgundy sweater now and a dusky pink one on the needles (everyone looks good in dusky pink!), but all the same it was helpful to realise that I shouldn't buy a sweater quantity of yellow yarn, no matter how much I like the sample cardigan in the booth. I sometimes limit my knitting vlog watching to concentrate on the things I planned and not get swept up in sales or pattern trends. Especially when I know I'm vulnerable to emo buys at that specific moment. To the point that I now watch quilting vlogs, while I have absolutely zero interest in quilting myself, it scratches the "marvelous women being creative" itch without adding to my yarn or pattern stash :) :) Your "stash neutral" goal really speaks to me - I don't want to do a yarn fast and buy nothing, but I have so much beautiful yarn in my stash that doesn't get knit. I found a few patterns like the Musselburgh hat that is great for a skein of handdyed and really lets the yarn shine, so that's great for those singles, and I want to knit my sweater quantities. I also want to do an allover colourwork pullover or cardigan, because I've been doing fair isle and stranded colourwork hats and mittens and those are SO much fun.
thank you very much for taking the time to comment ! love the tip about watching different hobby vlogs to keep a layer of separation and not immediately jump to do the same !
I just found you. It was an enjoyable video. I can identify with sliding down. I cross-stitch as well. If I try to keep up with trends, patterns, and what everyone is doing, I will be broke. I have so much in my stash. One of my goals is to knit 2 new patterns and complete at least 3 from my stash. .I hope you enter your work in the festival this year. Don't give up! I love your tonal cards/colors. I have very similar coloring to you- this would be very helpful in choosing yarns. I'm looking forward to seeing more.
I am an amateur knitter and just discovered your channel. Love how well and openly you explain your processes and thoughts, it is really helpful when thinking about my own knitting and what it means to me. Your slow knitting discussion really grabbed me - I started knitting as a way of slowing down, working with my hands and physical materials, my senses and being present. The experience of the process is most important for me - I do have to like and want the fo also, but if I'm not enjoying the knitting it is defeating my purpose in picking it up in the first place. I've been trying to find more like minded knitters and info related to what I guess would be called process knitting but not a lot of luck so far. I also like how you want to be mindful of how much you are buying and caring for your knits rather than just looking for or getting caught up in what's next. I also took up knitting as a hobby to get away from consumerism, to instead be creative, to connect with and not just own beauty, and again to be present in my own body and make something tangible, with my hands. To reflect on how awesome it is to have two hands that can make such lovely things. Sorry I am getting a bit poetic, I think I'm just glad to hear some of the same ideas. It will be interesting to follow your channel!
thanks! glad you like the channel! Very poetic way to think about things, i like that and it's nice to see it into words, because i've been feeling it too !
I’m a senior and beginning knitter. I enjoy your videos and get really good information from them. I’ve wondered how youtubers keep producing content on a schedule and the pressure that must put on a person. I think you are doing the right thing by not bending to the demands for videos and making more and more test garments. I don’t think you will lose viewers. They will still want to watch because you provide content of value and you enjoy doing it. I support your decision and will continue to watch whatever you produce.
I am also a light summer, draped in the TCI/12 Blueprints system. A lot of times you hear light summer described as Popsicle colors and early summer blooms. A lot of people think light summer means pastels but we actually have a lot of vibrant colors in our palette. I adore the light summer palette so I do lean into it but I don't NOT wear something if its not 100% match. I use it as a guide when buying and considering how my wardrobe will work together. I do follow the light summer makeup palette even closer than the clothing because it makes such a huge difference. I don't wear black eyeliner or mascara anymore at all.
thank you and yes, not just pastels but some punchy colours too which will be so fun to experiment with this summer for instance ! And I haven't used eye shadow in a while so maybe I will try a bit of pink next ! i bought a new brown eyeliner which im eager to try as well
I recently found your channel through this video, and I’ve been watching and enjoying a lot of your back catalogue. I like the way you’ve broken down your goals and it’s inspired me to write down and think about my own goals. I’ve since actually sat down and finished up 3 projects that I’ve had sitting around for a while and have planned to frog a few that I just don’t think would be things I’d actually wear.
I agree with the season palettes. I'm a true winter. I do have yarns in my stash that's more towards the autumn side which don't suit me. However, if I use the colours that suit me close to my face and the others further away from, then I can still use those yarns. A nice pattern for hand dyed speckled yarn is the Sunset Highway by Caitlin Hunter.
I chose similar goals for 2024. In the last years I bought way to many patterns in an impulse. This year I wanna knit from stash and I add all the patterns I like to the cart and then in December I’ll decide if I still like ‘em and then I’ll buy ‘em.
Sustainable crafting, a definite yes. How many sweaters or scarfs does one person need a year? Trends are sometimes quite silly, imo. I'm lucky - my family loves to wear knits, so I don't only knit for myself. Taking good care of the items we have, repurposing yarn, choosing ecological options, even more in the future, and definitely using the patterns that I have are my goals for this year. It made me tremendously happy that a young person like you is so mindful of the "weaknesses" that can lead to always not so good decisions! I'm a new viewer, so this was maybe the second video from you that I've seen. Greetings from Finland! ❤
thanks ! Glad you enjoyed. It is definitely difficult to manage wanting to knit as much as id love to, vs how many knitted items i need in my flat ! But i will find a way to balance things i hope !
Absolutely delightful podcast again thanks Vanissia. I think it is a great idea for you to follow your complexion/hair/eyes colour palette. Isn't it great to have all the possible choices of yarn colours narrowed down somewhat 😄. I will be happy to continue to watch - even more so now, as we have the same palette (but I am grey haired ). I am loving your inspiration and thoughts 🙏
thank you so much sharon ! And yes exactly, i just love having a bit less choice but still there are so many colours in there ! And id love to follow other podcasters that look similar to me for inspiration too !
Knitting from my books was one “proposal” I’ve made to myself last year. And I did 3! Well, one is still waiting for more yarn to arrive, but still!!! I’m proud of myself!😊 I hope you meet your goals and that they bring you fulfillment! ❤
I don't really have goals, I'll knit what I knit. There is one cardigan that's been in my queue for some time and I have the yarn for, Overgrown by Anna Johanna, that I really want to make soon, but we'll see. Regarding slowing down and accumulating knits... As soon as I was knitting my first sweater and it looked like it was going to be a success (some 3 years ago), it was clear to me that I would most likely end up with way more garments than I would be able to wear out in a lifetime. So from the beginning I was never in a hurry to complete anything and the items are still piling on, perhaps not as fast. Some of my approaches that I've noticed influence the slowing down: - I don't look for fast projects. I don't shy away from large projects on small (or what some might consider small) needles. Example, I made an all over cabled cardigan (cables every second row) with a lot of positive ease using light fingering yarn on 3 mm needles, I enjoyed making it very much and I enjoy wearing it very much. It was seamed, too. My go-to needles for garments are 3-3.5 mm. I've also knitted on 6 mm but this is way more rare. - I don't shy away from finishing work. Well, I may postpone it a lot, but I don't choose projects based on the amount of finishing they will need. If it needs to be seamed, it will be seamed eventually, and that cardigan was lots and lots of hours of seaming. (Which I didn't particularly enjoy and some seams had to be undone and seamed again but of well, in the end it's worth it.) - I don't always work with the gauge recommended. Example, I have thinner yarn and tighter gauge, I start knitting a larger size per pattern and never to this day has this worked for me. There's always some adjustments to be done, which means some calculations, which means time. More often than not, some ripping out a portion here and there and redoing things, which is a lot more time. Never afraid of this. (Except working with unspun yarn, I'm afraid to rip out in this case but I've not worked with unspun that much.) - I don't always follow the pattern. Sometimes I'll take the pattern texture and attempt to create a different fit. Sometimes it will work from the first try, sometimes it won't, and in the latter case it would mean ripping back and reknitting. In all cases, it takes time to make all the calculations. I have had to unravel the whole body of a sweater, for example, more than once, because the sweater was knitted top down and corrections were needed prior to splitting body and sleeves, and this was becoming obvious quite late in the process, at least to my eye. Still, never afraid of experimenting this way. - I don't always follow a pattern. I have not designed a ready to publish pattern in different sizes but for myself, I make things up. This, again, takes time to think about it, some maths, depending on the pattern it might be a lot and it might take a lot of time. Then the maths may or may not work because my gauge swatches teng to be misleading. Last was an all over lace sweater and it didn't require any redoing but it did involve swatching with the pattern with raglan increases and with scaling out the pattern to see what looks best to me, which was actually a lot of knitting, not to mention the swatching prior to that to choose the color combo because it was light fingering with mohair in very different colors.
I also need to knit some more from my books! I have the same sock books as you mentioned so maybe we can do a mini-knit-along for one of the sock designs if there are any we both want to knit? 😊
Thank you, Vanissia, for such a lovely episode. I would be very interested in an episode about mohair substitution. I’ve just started Sari Nordlund’s Turtle Dove Shawl and am using Sandnes Garn Sunday held with a strand of Sandnes Garn Alpakka Folgetrad. I’m very interested to see how it will turn out as I’m sure if I used some type of mohair it just would be uncomfortable to wear. Thanks for all your time and effort you put into your videos. It is appreciated.
Those lovely sweaters are in my queue for a reason. I want to knit those wardrobe staples that will get worn constantly instead getting distracted by the latest shiny thing that doesn’t really fit my style
Thanks for sharing your goal as well as addressing the impulsive buying behavior! I will also try to buy yarns in a shop in person rather than online, since I’ve experienced quite often that the photos looked different from the actual yarn shade, or at least how I imagined when I bought online. Although another problem is I don’t have an access to all the yarn brands that I want to get locally 🤔 If you do cardigan no. 8 KAL, l will definitely join :) I’ve got Noro Madara and now wondering what I want to hold with, because you can manipulate the overall hue quite a lot with the second strand. I’m curious to know which second yarn you will use for your cardigan no. 8 !
that could be a good way to slow down! I have 3 yarn shops in Edinburgh I can go to, so I could just wait until then, and it would make me think twice about the purchase, since they don't stock everything ! And i have been disappionted in the past with colours/textures bought online ! And that's great, I was eyeing up the madara for sure, especially like you say, the ones with a second strand that made it a different shade. Definitely remind me closer to the time !
Thank you for your excellent video. I had never made knitting goals before but love the way you took stock from last year and made some concrete plans. I think I will take some time this week to look at my stash and wardrobe and put together some plans of my own.
I agree with all you said in regards to slowing down. My word for the year is “balance” for that reason. I too want to slow the buying down. I decided to use stash but, will buy if I need something to complete a project. I also make quilts so am carrying this over for fabric as well.
I also have some goals for this year, right now I want to do ALLLLL the colourwork and ALLL the cables, I'm nearly done with the Porcelain Sweater, I already have 2 test knits under my belt this month 😅 a colourwork sweater and a pair of colourwork socks. Right now I started the St. Brigid sweater by Alice Starmore because I just felt like it... But I also have the goal to finish some of my long term WIPs or otherwise give them up completely and get rid of them / frog them if the yarn is high quality. And use up some stash. So, all the things 😇
Such fun listening to all of your goals! Slowing down can be so hard as we are constantly bombarded with beautiful new patterns on social media, but I think that your idea of taking time to focus on more difficult or “opus” projects is a great way to do so. I love your color palette and I think you will enjoy those colors - I am a Spring and warm tone colors are what always make me feel best so for sweaters I stick with those. I have way too many ideas to even try to make a lot of specific goals, but I definitely want to make a pullover in Kinross 4 ply and knit more socks this year.
that's the problem with all the craft supplies - i can buy faster than i make. like one tip you often see with respect to stash accumulation is to not buy without a project in mind - well I ALWAYS have a project in mind! i just don't make the projects quickly enough! i'm much older than you and it's still a struggle, i think you have a lot of introspection and that's really great.
loved this video! i’m a soft autumn and knowing my colors has really limited my clothes shopping thankfully. it’s also helped me choose yarn colors, and dictated my wedding color scheme 😂 i’m excited to see what you knit in 2024 with your color palette!
I thought a lot about many of the goals you mentioned as well. 2024 is my second year of proper garment knitting and I made more than 50 items (a lot of them garments) in my first year. I am running out of space for yarn and sweaters but I decided to postpone most of those goals to 2025 and allow myself a second year of obsessive knitting lol. I definitely have to slow down the yarn buying and will gift a few garments that I like but never really wear. Next year I will try to knit garments that take longer but "unfortunately" my style is very minimalistic and simple. Most of the more complicated patterns (lace, cables, colourwork) are just not my style. I guess I'll make some oversized fingering weight sweaters lol. Looking forward to next Sunday!!
wow well done you !! And yes definitely running out of space is a big problem. Hope you find a good balance this year ! I understand the dilemma between complex patterns vs liking to wear minimalistic things !
On the topic of “slowing down” and sock knitting, look at the Slow Down Socks on Ravelry. They are all over colourwork, top down, with a heel flap, two colors only. I’m thinking of doing these as part of my sock challenge.
Hi Vanissia, wonderful video! I too need to knit some of my Andrea Mowry patterns, so I think this year I may knit on the pink fizz, but modify it to a vest perhaps. The inspiration can be very overwhelming, so slowing down and being more mindful is an aspiration I hope I can achieve.
This was a great video! I have a lot of similar goals- especially about slowing down, decreasing my stash, and designing! On the color palette- I’ve also found it extremely useful to figure out my color season ( I’m a soft autumn I think) and use that to inform my yarn purchases. While it doesn’t have to be a hard rule to only wear within that palette, it does help to have a guide to make good decisions for colors that will make me feel confident and vibrant! Excited to see what we both accomplish in the year ahead 🤩
thank you sarah !! I loved your planning video too, i feel we have a similar mindset aha ! I love the 2 cardigans youve made for yourself this year they really suit you so much!
Slowing down is a great goal, I'm trying to slow down with buying especially and to use up stash. Specifically I will try not to buy more yarn in a month than I used the previous month. I also don't want more than 4 WIP's on the needles at once, to decrease impulse casts ons! In addition I spin starting with raw fleece so I want to process and spin at least 1 fleece or 1kg of fleece per month and use handspun in at least one project per month. Finally I just started weaving so I want to weave at least one project a month. Maybe not slowing down so much but hopefully finishing a few more projects than last year instead of starting so many!
Thank you, Vanissia, as always interesting and entertaining. I can see how easy it would be to collect hand dyed because it’s beautiful but I’m trying not to!
It seems like a lot of us get sucked into the hype of test knitting, then we’re over it. So then there’s a whole new crop of testers falling into it! 😂😂😂 This was a fun video, and I love your wise and easy-going attitude toward all the goals. Thanks!
Thank you for this truly nice video. Since you asked what we think about slowing down I really would like to recommend Kimberly Clark's series 'how to stop shopping in 5 easy steps', here on TH-cam. You are obviously very aware of triggers to buy and marketing tactics and maybe we all are more or less aware, but these videos are very insightful and inspiring to listen to , to hear these things again, in different words. Recommend for anyone who would like to slow down, cool down! ❤
It was nice to see your goals. My goal this year is fit. I want to try and get a recipe for a top down sweater that fits me perfectly so then going forward I can just adapt it with cables or different colours. I think that’s a lofty goal so I only have the one 😂
Thank you I really enjoy watching your podcast, you always have such thoughtful honest views. I really hope you knit Andrea Mowry soon! I would love to know what you think. I have only knit one sweater ever, her DRK Everyday but I found it really great. I also like her podcast as it's a bit different to other typical podcasts. I love planning like you but never find it stressful if I don't complete everything. Looking forward to keeping up with all your progress.
Love watching all of the intention videos at the moment 😊 I just got the result from my colour analysis (I’m a true summer) and will be choosing colours from my pallette this year. I even sold off a lot of my camel coloured knits that I hadn’t reached for in ages anyways - and would like to remake one or two but in other colours. Slowing down is definetly on my list as well, and not focus so much on the number of garments - but on making garments I’ll be really happy with (which also means gauge swatching..).
To tally with the yarn shifting plan. My idea is to keep track of how much I knit/otherwise destash each month and then restrict any purchases in the following month to no or than 50% - we shall see
This was a super cute video, Vanissia! Loved loved this! I appreciate you mentioning the reminder to slow down, i totally relate to this. And also felt called with the Andrea Mowry pattern sales😂- I do the same! Highly recommend you to try any of her accessories, I think you’ll enjoy the straightforward writing style. Thanks for this video 😊
I also struggle with buying yarn on sale! So, you are not alone there. I'm writing down all my yarn purchases in my knitting journal this year and whether the yarn I purchase is for a specific project (I'm trying to prioritize this). I do plan to knit the Skein deer knits jumper in green and white for Christmas this year. I already have the yarn for it so I plan to start that closer to fall, maybe when my son goes back to school!
My only goal is to knit my alder's sweater !! I have the yarn just need to finished my talvinen sweater once... that makes two goals in fact ! And knit a tee for my daugther... well i nezd to think about my goals ... thank you for that !!
Lovely Video! I also have the goal to knit patterns form my books (and ravelry library) and not buy too many new patterns (like you: no hard rules). I also want to knit more from my stash yarn - but not - again- a "no buy rule". I also think that the colors of the soft summer really suit you. I'm not for "hard rules" but I am quite sure I'm a autumn (soft or true... I'm not sure of that) and I think the colors really suit me and I get a lot of compliments concerning my skin tone, hair or eye-color if I wear these colors. But. If I feel like knitting with a totally different color - I'll do so. ;-P I once read somewhere that you kind of can ,borrow 'colors from the season opposite of this circle or next to your season (left and right or just all summer types in your case) ... for a bit of a change. I would love a mohair substitute video, as I can not tolerate it at all. And I even struggle with suri /brushed alpaca silk. :-(
Yay! I’m going to be in the UK for the live! I will join for sure. I’m very tempted to knit the Burra Cowl as I plan to buy the yarn while in England. Did you have enough leftovers from the project to make something else, like some gloves or should I plan to buy extra balls of the Jamison’s spindrift?
You will be lovely in lavender. I am a winter and I pretty well keep to it as I don’t like the colors on the autumn spectrum. I don’t hate them but I am not. Drawn to them. I am knitting socks all year because I have an overwhelming amount of single skeins. I am trying to enjoy to the moment not just the project.
yeah i thought i was winter too at first because cool tones, but then when someone pointed out i was summer, it made more sense ! i loved learning about this. And so important to enjoy the moment !!
I'm keeping my fingers for your PInk Fizz by Andrea Mowry, I have it on my favourite list for so long and still didn't cast it on! Maybe yours will inspire me :)
I want to knit with a neutral at least once per season. I was wondering where you found info on your seasonal colouring. I have been looking but have been either overwhelmed or hit dead ends
that's a good balance! And some people have kindly told me which helped me know what direction to look into! and comparing yourself to the photos they share as examples of celebrities !
i think the best ones don't have long floats ! fair isle is good for that, but then there's a lot of colour changing which is annoying for weaving in the ends. Maybe some by jennifer steingass? they were my first ones ! she has so many to choose from
My goal for this year is to stash down significantly - in 2025 I’ll be moving from Korea back home to the US and the idea of shipping a sizable stash feels ridiculous. I love the process of yarn shopping and pattern matching, but in the grand scheme of things cutting back and using current stash for a year isn’t going to hurt me 😅
I’m not sure if you have done a video like the one I’m about to suggest…and if you have please direct me to that video…but have you done a video comparing different cardigans? It seems like they’re all the same and I get overwhelmed and don’t go down that path because I feel I might be disappointed in the end product. I’m only suggesting this because you’ve done so many cardigans and I think you’ve got a good handle of fit/guage and construction…just a thought!👍😜
Sell some of your yarn on here, with a kofi shop, your dislikes are some one elses likes, it will subsidise your buys. I have learnt a big lesson trying to keep up ❤
I really like your goal to stop being sucked up by trends but I don’t see the “all I knitted this year” video as a trend. I personally enjoy watching an honest review of the longevity of those knits in terms of how much you actually use them,or if you ended up giving/throwing it away, yarn quality etc. Some TH-camrs only focus on mass production of knits which defeats the whole purpose of knitting
Funny thing, but not knitting with mohair anymore is the trend right now (almost all the podcasters I follow say this) so by saying you are not following the mohair trend you are actually following the trend atm lol
lmao you might be right !! I've not seen it discussed thaaaat much with people i follow, but i'm looking forward to seeing more examples of "mohair garments" being made without mohair, to pave the way!
You being you is why I watch every single one of your videos without fail. You always come across as a genuine and honest person. Xxx
awww that's so sweet, thank you! x
You know you can add your books to your Ravelry library - and then when you search for patterns, you can limit the search to "in my library"
oh yes I do that ! But I often search by "hot right now" and sadly they never make their way to the top of the list lol but im trying to do less trendy things anyways
Haha i laughes so hard at the sentence and the swallow after you said it: "Something that really got me was sales.... *swallow*"
hahaha that was not on purpose !
I have faith you will, you give the impression of being a very focused person
thank you !! That was super insightful, you left me feeling inspired aha ! Hope you have a good knitting year ahead :D
Vanissia you're so cool! Love how self-aware you are, and how you share so openly to normalise introspection for us all 🥰
W.r.t. FOMO purchases, one thing that helps me (especially with patterns) is to really only buy them once I'm committed to knitting it ~next. And what helps with *that* is knowing that the number of patterns in the world is strictly increasing, so even if I'm sure I want the beautiful sweater released this week, if I wait until I'm ready to start to buy the pattern, there might already be another released that I'm even more drawn to :)
And then I personally try to wait to purchase yarns once I have the exact project planned for them, but I know some people prefer to let the yarn inspire the project ✨
But yeah I guess the basic principle is that delaying purchases gives me the freedom to choose from all the cool stuff that'll be available x months down the line
thank you!! that helps so much, and so true about the number of patterns and yarns only ever increasing, so what's the rush !
It's really been on my mind lately that I have way more than I need.
good goals there !!
Color analysis has made my enthusiasm as an artist skyrocket ❤😊 I love when people are able to see objectively that colors can really work or not work for them and I also love when people choose to break the rules out of personal freedom too ❤❤
thanks !! And yeah, so fun to play around with it !
Very well thought out.
thank you! And yes, it would be quite the change to only buy when i am ready to cast on!
To the point that I now watch quilting vlogs, while I have absolutely zero interest in quilting myself, it scratches the "marvelous women being creative" itch without adding to my yarn or pattern stash :) :)
Your "stash neutral" goal really speaks to me - I don't want to do a yarn fast and buy nothing, but I have so much beautiful yarn in my stash that doesn't get knit.
I'm looking forward to seeing more.
thank you so much, glad it resonated ! I started on my festival entry !!
Love this episode and your reflections on goals for 2024. Slowing down, no more mohair nor hand dyed yarns for me too.
yay, go us!
I support your decision and will continue to watch whatever you produce.
thank you Paula ! Very nice to hear this from you!
I’ve since actually sat down and finished up 3 projects that I’ve had sitting around for a while and have planned to frog a few that I just don’t think would be things I’d actually wear.
thank you! Glad it inspired you ! And congrats on tying up those loose ends :P
I agree with the season palettes. I'm a true winter. I do have yarns in my stash that's more towards the autumn side which don't suit me. However, if I use the colours that suit me close to my face and the others further away from, then I can still use those yarns. A nice pattern for hand dyed speckled yarn is the Sunset Highway by Caitlin Hunter.
thanks, that is a beautiful pattern ! and good advice regarding colours
@@thewoollyworker Just a heads up with the Sunset Highway, it has alot of positive ease worked in already, so sizing was a bit of a thing for me
I chose similar goals for 2024. In the last years I bought way to many patterns in an impulse. This year I wanna knit from stash and I add all the patterns I like to the cart and then in December I’ll decide if I still like ‘em and then I’ll buy ‘em.
yes, good to revisit our pattern library for sure !!
'overwhelmed by stash' - I feel you :) slowing down in many ways is my goal for this year as well. Thanks for another insightful video, Vanissia!
thank you! And i know there's so many of us in the same boat !
Happy Birthday! Thanks for the great video!
ahhh that's great to hear !! Hope that will be me at the end of the year aha. Well done!
Some of my approaches that I've noticed influence the slowing down:
- I don't look for fast projects.
(Which I didn't particularly enjoy and some seams had to be undone and seamed again but of well, in the end it's worth it.)
- I don't always work with the gauge recommended. (Except working with unspun yarn, I'm afraid to rip out in this case but I've not worked with unspun that much.)
- I don't always follow the pattern.
Last was an all over lace sweater and it didn't require any redoing but it did involve swatching with the pattern with raglan increases and with scaling out the pattern to see what looks best to me, which was actually a lot of knitting, not to mention the swatching prior to that to choose the color combo because it was light fingering with mohair in very different colors.
thank you, that was a very insightful read !
I also need to knit some more from my books! I have the same sock books as you mentioned so maybe we can do a mini-knit-along for one of the sock designs if there are any we both want to knit? 😊
yes, let's brainstorm !!
Admire your frankness, thanks for sharing your plans and thoughts.
Glad you like them!
It is appreciated.
that sounds so dreamy !! and thank you very much :)
Those lovely sweaters are in my queue for a reason. I want to knit those wardrobe staples that will get worn constantly instead getting distracted by the latest shiny thing that doesn’t really fit my style
exactly!
Thanks for sharing your goal as well as addressing the impulsive buying behavior! I will also try to buy yarns in a shop in person rather than online, since I’ve experienced quite often that the photos looked different from the actual yarn shade, or at least how I imagined when I bought online. Although another problem is I don’t have an access to all the yarn brands that I want to get locally 🤔
If you do cardigan no.
I think I will take some time this week to look at my stash and wardrobe and put together some plans of my own.
thank you for saying! I hope you find that experience rewarding and that it gives a bit of structure to your year !
I agree with all you said in regards to slowing down. My word for the year is “balance” for that reason. I too want to slow the buying down. I decided to use stash but, will buy if I need something to complete a project. I also make quilts so am carrying this over for fabric as well.
ohhhhh that's a really good word too ! And i like the flexibility of being able to buy more to finish !
So, all the things 😇
aaww that's so good to hear ! good luck !!
I have way too many ideas to even try to make a lot of specific goals, but I definitely want to make a pullover in Kinross 4 ply and knit more socks this year.
thank you! Can't wait to hear what you thought of the kinross !
that's the problem with all the craft supplies - i can buy faster than i make. like one tip you often see with respect to stash accumulation is to not buy without a project in mind - well I ALWAYS have a project in mind! i just don't make the projects quickly enough! i'm much older than you and it's still a struggle, i think you have a lot of introspection and that's really great.
omg same !!! I do always have a project in mind but it doesn't help!
loved this video! i’m a soft autumn and knowing my colors has really limited my clothes shopping thankfully. it’s also helped me choose yarn colors, and dictated my wedding color scheme 😂 i’m excited to see what you knit in 2024 with your color palette!
ah what a lovely thought ! and yeah i find that the limiting is actually super helpful!
I’m thinking of doing these as part of my sock challenge.
oh thank you that sounds lovely
Wear black on the bottom!! I’m a similar color range to you, so I understand! Navy and a reddish-brown are my dark neutrals.
good idea !! definitely need the lighter colours next to my face but then it doesnt matter at much !
Hi Vanissia, wonderful video! I too need to knit some of my Andrea Mowry patterns, so I think this year I may knit on the pink fizz, but modify it to a vest perhaps. The inspiration can be very overwhelming, so slowing down and being more mindful is an aspiration I hope I can achieve.
oh that would be so beautiful !! dont think ive seen that modification done, good luck!
Maybe not slowing down so much but hopefully finishing a few more projects than last year instead of starting so many!
those are great ideas ! I love how specific these are. Hope this works out well for you ! :D
Thank you, Vanissia, as always interesting and entertaining. I can see how easy it would be to collect hand dyed because it’s beautiful but I’m trying not to!
Thank you so much! and yes, isnt it!
It seems like a lot of us get sucked into the hype of test knitting, then we’re over it. So then there’s a whole new crop of testers falling into it! 😂😂😂
This was a fun video, and I love your wise and easy-going attitude toward all the goals. Thanks!
ahaha oh no !! generation after generation. Thanks for watching :P
oh thanks, that was super helpful to look into !!
It was nice to see your goals. My goal this year is fit. I want to try and get a recipe for a top down sweater that fits me perfectly so then going forward I can just adapt it with cables or different colours. I think that’s a lofty goal so I only have the one 😂
that's such a good idea, good luck!
Looking forward to keeping up with all your progress.
thank you!! The DRK is on my shortlist as well, seems like a nice staple. And yeah our plans are made up and there's no actual pressure !
Slowing down is definetly on my list as well, and not focus so much on the number of garments - but on making garments I’ll be really happy with (which also means gauge swatching..).
yay, hope you end up remaking some of them in your colours then ! Hope you have a great knitting year ahead :D
To tally with the yarn shifting plan. My idea is to keep track of how much I knit/otherwise destash each month and then restrict any purchases in the following month to no or than 50% - we shall see
very good! Ive also been starting to track how much i destash and so far my goal is to not buy more than that value, but 50% is even better aha !
@@thewoollyworkerwell I have a few decades on you and my stash is beyond out of control! Extra motivation
Thanks for this video 😊
aha glad to know im not alone !! and thats good advice, i think ill definitely do one of her cowls !
I already have the yarn for it so I plan to start that closer to fall, maybe when my son goes back to school!
ah great inspiration ! Green and white will be lovely. And yes i do write down all my yarn purchases to keep an eye on things !!
My only goal is to knit my alder's sweater !! I have the yarn just need to finished my talvinen sweater once... that makes two goals in fact ! And knit a tee for my daugther... well i nezd to think about my goals ... thank you for that !!
ahh good luck with it all!
really enjoyed watching. for a kal, i would love to make colorwork mittens!
there's a mini mittens kal in the discord now if you were interested!
thanks for sharing your thoughts !
Yay! I’m going to be in the UK for the live! I will join for sure. I’m very tempted to knit the Burra Cowl as I plan to buy the yarn while in England. Did you have enough leftovers from the project to make something else, like some gloves or should I plan to buy extra balls of the Jamison’s spindrift?
id recommend getting 1 extra ball of Birch and 1 of Camel, and then you can make the Skerries mittens from the same book !
@@thewoollyworker Thanks! I was going to buy the pattern but maybe I will purchase the book instead!
Maybe yours will inspire me :)
aw i hope so!!
Hi Vanissa! The Ravelry sock KAL had to be entered by end of July 2023. I think that's what I read if I'm not mistaken
ah perfect! i definitely did, so im just gonna continue making them and then enter again!
What are some good patterns for beginner colorwork?
i think the best ones don't have long floats ! fair isle is good for that, but then there's a lot of colour changing which is annoying for weaving in the ends. Maybe some by jennifer steingass? they were my first ones ! she has so many to choose from
My goal for this year is to stash down significantly - in 2025 I’ll be moving from Korea back home to the US and the idea of shipping a sizable stash feels ridiculous. I love the process of yarn shopping and pattern matching, but in the grand scheme of things cutting back and using current stash for a year isn’t going to hurt me 😅
omg yeah i couldnt imagine such a big move !! that's good to keep you focused on that goals !!
I think you should call your first goal 'Knit neutral '😉
hahahah love that !!
I’m not sure if you have done a video like the one I’m about to suggest…and if you have please direct me to that video…but have you done a video comparing different cardigans? It seems like they’re all the same and I get overwhelmed and don’t go down that path because I feel I might be disappointed in the end product. I’m only suggesting this because you’ve done so many cardigans and I think you’ve got a good handle of fit/guage and construction…just a thought!👍😜
oooh no, not yet! but ill write this down, as it's a good idea :D
I’ll keep my eye out for it…of course no pressure to do it anytime soon…I’ve got enough ideas and plans to keep me busy for sometime 😂
Sell some of your yarn on here, with a kofi shop, your dislikes are some one elses likes, it will subsidise your buys. I have learnt a big lesson trying to keep up ❤
yes, i have my ravelry destash page and have been regularly updating it! it's a good tip for anyone!
I really like your goal to stop being sucked up by trends but I don’t see the “all I knitted this year” video as a trend. I personally enjoy watching an honest review of the longevity of those knits in terms of how much you actually use them,or if you ended up giving/throwing it away, yarn quality etc. Some TH-camrs only focus on mass production of knits which defeats the whole purpose of knitting
thanks and yes, that's fair enough ! i like to hear about this too !

It’s time for that overdone trend to end. Also the huge-body, oversized “crazy” sweaters, ugh.
