My beauty advent calendar idea for myself this year- I got a reusable wooden calendar from Target. I’m going to have my partner fill each spot with a single shadow, a glitter, a lipstick, a colorful gel liner, something each day to base a look around. It’s stuff I already own so I know I like it, but may make me revisit some loves I may have forgotten about in the back of a drawer. I’m actually really excited about it!

I'm not spending money on eyeshadow until I hit pan in each of my 11 palettes. I have more than enough eyeshadow and there's no point buying more. What I own has an expiry date, I should use it while it's good!

@@eccentricbooknerd the only reason I have is because I set my eye primer with a matte cream colored shadow. I've hit pan in two of these shades each in my Tartelette and Tartelette In Bloom palettes.

I totally agree. I've always said: Different things have different value to different people. If a person wants to save money for a year to be able to buy the bag of their dreams, I think that's awesome! If they have the money to buy one everyday, good for them! If people buy cheap, go ahead! Prioritizing is a personal thing, so one should just make the best of what they got. However "best" looks for you. 🥰 Love and light from Denmark, Scandinavia ❤️

I got rid of my beauty box subscriptions because I realized how little of the products I used out of them. Honestly, I think I was more in love with the idea of receiving a package rather than the contents inside. That's a monthly expense I definitely do not miss.

My best advice is to always look at the full price of acquiring the product. The product may only be 20 $ but with taxes, delivery and costoms it can easily be more than double the amount you have to spend.

Great video, Angeschka! 👏🏻 Being overweight and chronicaly ill with very low income there's not a lot of room for stupid purchases 😅. Most of my money goes for food, food supplements and bills. My only splurge is make-up. I buy maybe max. 6 new clothes per year, new sneakers when the old one gets really worn out. I find most of home decor useless, I make the same style Christmas tree every year. I dropped buying make-up backups a while ago too. I'm slowly decluttering my make-up collection. I depot palettes I don't like and save shades from them I like. I have urge to buy new stuff all the time but I keep it under control most of the time. If I really want something, I think how should I use it and where I can store it. I decided a week ago, I will buy 70€ eyeshadow palette I really wanna have for the longest time instead of another affordable one. Because it's THE ONE make-up item I want.

    Just a different perspective...
For things that are not expiring & you will use like cleaners, personal care, etc.: 1) you may get volume discounts, 2) the way inflation is going you may actually be paying more at the next purchase, 3) the types of savings accounts that have rates that actually beat inflation pressures tend to be long term deposits, longer than the usage cycle of fmcg & lastly 4) depending on how & where you shop, getting in bulk and travelling less, etc to go shopping may balance out in terms of your carbon footprint.

I aaaaalmost bought the melt muerte palette off mercari because it was truly the one that got away and the brand said they were never restocking. I didn’t because it was $58 but being sold for like $250-$400! Then this year they finally did restock it so I got it regularly priced! I stopped spending my money on everything 😅🙌(no buy) but the makeup items I stopped buying are loose pigments & single potted eye shadows or gel liners. It's such a waste for me. They just go in a box never to be seen again. *speaking of advent calendars (hate them!) I noticed the other day Glamshop gives you the option to see what's in their advent calendars! That's something I could get behind.

I don’t go looking for items. If an item is “The One” it will find me. I have been wearing the same necklace for almost 14 years. Same watch for five. I will splurge on “the one “, because I know I will wear it until it dies. I would rather have one necklace be “the one” than a pile of random. Same with shoes. I have had my favorite pair resoled by a cobbler, twice now. This may be my OCD, but it works out.

Yes, about buying only the most needed backups (soap, shampoo,etc.). Me personally, I buy a couple of the same tops or dresses, because I am tall, have ridiculously big chest and small waist so when I find something that fits and I like, I buy backups (I personally don't care about fashion to be bothered that I have the same dress in 3 colours).

for seasonal decor (i only really have a few christmas things) i recommend second hand! it is very easy to find even beautiful vintage pieces (i love 50s christmas decor) for very little money. but even modern pieces and christmas lights are easily available at thrift stores and charity shops for fraction of the cost of new decor.

I agree with your statement about not buying stuff because of FOMO. In like 2016-17 when I was deep into beauty YT, I would feel this weird need to own stuff that I don't really like - I'm not a neutrals person, I love color, there's no reason for me to own several brown palettes haha
I battle with deals though, but I've gotten so much better and my low-buy has been going strong for a year now. I only buy backups of my mascara, brow stuff and hair stuff that I go through every 3-4 months if there's a good sale going on. That's it. If I really want something, I'm gonna get it, but it needs to be a researched decision and compared to my existing stuff. I don't need several of the same vibes that bring nothing new. I almost bought both of the Oden's eye christmas releases, but I managed to talk some sense into myself that I don't like cool tones, realistically the Christmas Eve palette is not my style, even if it's stunning to look at.

The only household item that I purchase a backup for is coffee. I don’t purchase the backup until I have used more than half of the current can. We must have our coffee! 😂
    I know you understand that!
I buy one new Christmas ornament a year. I have my parents ornaments, some of which are 75 years old! They were married in 1947, and I was born in 1949. I treasure them.

Thank you for the reminder of what really makes us happy and how this relates to our finances. This is so helpful at this time. I am becoming very minimalistic the older I get and just can’t do clutter. I agree on purchasing pieces for your wardrobe and building your collection. For Christmas I enjoy making my own decorations and then I can throw them out when I’m tired of them guilt free. It’s much more affordable but I realize not everyone has the time/talent to do this. I offer this as a suggestion to overspending on decorations.

Your thoughts on home decor and clothing is SO smart. I only buy clothing if I LOVE it or if it's like something I really like/wear a lot in a different color (I have like 4 of the same workout tops in different clothes because I wear them all the time). We have Christmas decorations but we don't buy more every year unless it's something different and has meaning to us. But you won't catch me with a stuffed turkey on my kitchen table or a giant pumpkin in my front yard! I'm trying to be smarter about makeup these days but i definitely don't buy as much as some of my friends - I only buy stuff I truly love or want. Loved this video btw 💜💜💜

It is very different in Eastern Europe. We HAVE to buy backups of things like cleaning supplies or laoundry things if there is a sale because our money (Forint) is worth less and less every minute and you never know when will you became so broke you couldn't afford it... So it's true for a country or a person who has a stable income and financial situation but not for the people here sadly.

Advent calendars are my thing, IF and ONLY IF I already know what's in there and the value is incredibly more than what I'm paying for. This year I bought the Cult Beauty one and the value it's over 1000$, with a discount of more than 70%: this is the kind of bundle I like because I travel a lot with my long distance relationship and I need decent travel sizes, since I use them!

I will do an advent calendar for a brand I've never used before but want to try. It gives me a wide variety of their products and lets me know if any of it's good. They're also smaller-sized items so they're easier to use up. OR if I want travel-sized items of things I know I already love.

I decided not to go for the Cult Beauty advent calendar in the end as I have some of the products and others weren't really for me. So instead I bought the hair, the fragrance and the luxury edit. The product value is similar and the cost slightly less, but for me I knew I would use all of those items. I especially love the fragrance one as it has a home fragrance, 2 gorgeous candles and then perfume samples. I think this can be a great way of buying things so long as you know you will use them! Years ago when the UK first launched beauty advent calendars I bought them a couple of years in a row from different shops and realised I still had stuff left at the end of the year!

You hit the nail on the head regarding us owning too many things to the point of overkill. I love watching the organizational TH-camr channel,Clutterbug, as she’s one of the few that I hear talking about having “too my much stuff” for the space in which we live (whatever size house), & really emphasizes the need to get rid of things that aren’t bringing us joy. I’ll be the first to raise my hand regarding living in a cluttered home, & realize it’s time to part with some things so as to reduce stress. We often forget that we are having to “manage” everything that we own in some respect, & as someone with chronic illness, I’ve found I no longer have the energy to manage a lot of stuff. 😉

I live in NYC with my husband and 2 boys in a small apartment. Def no room for clutter or a lot of extras. I have to declutter constantly and honestly it feels good not accumulating all the crap!

I'm literally just like you with the buying mentality. Having too much is stressful. I'm trying to minimize atm.. I've been trying to for years because that's what happens when you try to declutter and have a more minimal life after buying stuff you don't need for years on end and trying to dupe instead of buying the thing you truly want - because realistically, a lot of dupes will fully or almost fully amount to the original price of the original item you want. Might as well save up lol.

For beauty products, I have to have a backup of eyebrow pencil because they have a tendency to run out after I’ve done one brow. I also have backups of my skincare because I buy it when it’s on sale, and I use the same stuff. For house stuff, I have backups of hand soap and dish soap because I buy them when they are on sale.

Well, many things in Germany are way cheaper than in the Netherlands. So I always buy 6-12 months worth of toilet paper, sunscreen, toothpaste, some tinned food and grains, some cleaning stuff, etc. But all stuff that will definitely be used up. I always buy a gigantic box of laundry powder because it's considerably cheaper than the small ones per wash. So we generally agree I think.
The only collection I have is a collection of patches from my travels that I plan to make the most epic quilt with one day. 💜

I totally agree about decor or collection on display. I see things people buy and I don’t understand why because I would never display that even if I think it’s cute or funny. I feel anxious with clutter and extra stuff and I personally think it tackys up the room. Fight all the time with my family about what we are displaying.

I am a backup person. I’ve widdled it down though to absolute necessities. I had to stockpile tp at the beginning of the pandemic because it was nowhere for months, so when I saw it I got whatever the limit was. I never buy makeup backups unless it’s concealer, mascara, or face powder cause I go through those quickly.

I Like this kind of get ready. I 100% agree about seasonal decor. When did that even become a thing to redecorate every season! I like my stuff 365 days a year and add a slim Christmas tree with decorations that go with my existing color scheme and a couple of things the kids made that make me happy. It’s especially nice when it’s time to put it away!

I like having backups, because it gives me the luxury of not having to shuffle my whole weeks’ schedule solely because I need something that has just run out. However, I don’t buy backups of things that are used up slowly, such as perfume, dishwasher detergent or most makeup items 🤷‍♀️ to each their own

I’ve bought a lot of stuff and I sell a lot of stuff on Mercari. I’ve had a great experience overall. I will say there are sellers selling older products; eyeshadow pallets, foundation etc…and sellers selling products for way above the retail amount which makes no sense to me! There are way more honest and good sellers than dishonest ones. I’ve bought designer phone cases, designer jewelry, Clothes, coats, ton of makeup, skincare, makeup brushes, almost everything was brand new and 50-80% off of retail. It’s great if u have a lot and want to sell it

I have come to the same position as you with clothes. I have spent close to $400 over years blowing through so many black pumps. I agree wholeheartedly with most of everything you’ve said, but I took that advice from a different TH-camr, in regard to not buying back ups, and it bit me in the butt! My favorite foundation is now discontinued and I cannot find it anywhere… So now I am on the hunt for a foundation that works for me, which is a huge pain. Once I find a foundation that I love again, I will buy a back up or two!

I don't buy clothes often - only really to fill a gap in the wardrobe or replace something that's been retired. I have backups of things like skincare but I only buy them if I'm running low/ getting close to finishing something in that category up. The only backup make-up item I have is mascara/brow gel because I buy them on sale in bulk and pull out a new one every couple of months. I currently have 2 mascaras and 1 brow gel that haven't been opened yet that I bought in the last few months. If I see something in multiple shades from a formula I want to try, I only buy 1 shade that I think is my favourite to test it out. If I like it, I'll get more but if I hate it, I declutter it - I'm not here to waste money.

I buy my Apple cider vinegar hair rinse every year during the sephora sale. I'm starting the bottle I bought last year tomorrow. I purposely have a bottle on hand as I keep my hair short in the summer and I grow it out for winter. I use it more frequently in winter, so there's a good chance I could use it before the next sephora sale.

P.s. I hear you and I appreciate that most people don't need backups of most things most of the time. That calculus changed a bit for me when we bought our dream house. It's only 30 minutes away "from town," but it's 2000 feet above town. We live at 7100 feet. Even though I work in town and get groceries and supplies weekly, a big snowstorm can screw that up. And it used to be that when I was cooking and forgot something, if would just go get it. Now, if I forgot an ingredient, I may not cook that dish. The one road can wash out in flash floods. I hate clutter, too, but I do have more backups of miss stuff then we used to.

Shoes are the perfect example of why you invest in the right/good items and don’t need more. I wear the same 3 pairs of shoes every day. Granted I am not a shoe gal, like I love a cute shoe.. I appreciate those extra fancy pretty shoes, but that’s not my joy, and my feet need the special support because they are wide and flat with an insane instep, I can’t just wear whatever so I appreciate from afar. I love this chat.. don’t buy what you don’t use!

Great advice for people living in the city, when it costs 25 dollars in gas just to make a run into town, you stock up when you go 😂 Aaaahhh, the joys of living rurally 🤦‍♀️We have a huge freezer so we can stock up om food and make less grocery runs. Nothing is worse than realizing you need that one thing. It doesn't make sense to run to town for just that one thing, so you do without :(

I have a very small shoe collection, as they aren't my collector thing. However, they are an item I will spend money on (along with bras). I want my body to be well supported, so "fewer but better" is ideal here 👌🏻
Regarding Christmas decorations, when we relocated to our new country a few years ago, I got a lovely hand crafted wooden advent calendar. It is a tree shape made out of little multicoloured gift boxes and I love it! I fill with small snacks my husband likes and I get a real kick out of watching him open the boxes 😆🥰 This is our new tradition and it makes a lovely table centrepiece. Last year I added a small tabletop tree, pre decorated. I can pop it in a bag and shove it at the back of a cupboard. Then pull it out come Dec, already to go 🥳
