By ancient Standards ancient greeks where on average among the tallest people with an average of 5'9 to 5'10 " . This was due to better living conditions for the average person in Greece compared to other nations in which the lower classes had alot less resources to eat and grow.
This is based on archeological evidence of about 3000 to 5000 skeletons collected through out Greece from multiple time periods.

Hoplites (ancient Greek heavy infantrymen) received their denomination based on their shields (hoplon - great round shield), but it was equally essential for them to wear an armour (contrary to the picture suggested by 300, which, by no means is a historically accurate or historical movie at all, it is rather a fantasy). Consequently, as impressive as the man on this video indeed looks, he doesn’t qualify as a hoplite as he doesn’t have a great shield, just a medium one; nor wear an armour. As matter fact, he’s rather a peltas (ancient Greek light infantryman).

It was only the Spartans who used the very short "xiphos' stabbing sword (14 to 16" blade) Other Greeks usually used a sword with about a 24" blade, broadest a few inches back form the tip. Blaanced much better for cutting than for thrusting. also, hoplite shields were much bigger than his, almost three feet across. And hoplites wore armor. bronze if they were rich, twenty layers of linen glued together if they wer not rich.

@@bobbobson6290We dont! There is a chance more city-states used it, however:
      1) Iron extraction was hard, quantities low, and purity were an issue - a smaller, sturdier blade was a good tradeoff for a trained warrior vs a slightly longer bronze one.
      2) Given the fact that hoplites fought in mass formations with spears, if you had to use a sword a lot of things went wrong already. The range advantage of a longer blade wouldnt matter as much in the scrum of battle, but a short sword would be suited to another tactic that Spartans excelled at - raiding and ambushes, where a short sword is probably just as good in a fight.

Rome used the short sword and a pilum spear. They also used lead bullets fired from a sling.
An enemy of the Greeks killed many hoplites one day with just teenagers and slings. The Greeks were marching in full armor and the slingers attacked them from a distance. Of course the Greeks broke ranks to pursue and were slow in bronze plate…. The slingers has no armor and just ran ahead and then fired back. The slingers were deadly accurate and killed many elite hoplites. I think it was the dacians or a tribe near Croatia.
The origin of the “parting shot” comes from the Romans who fought the parthians and Rome did not rely on cavalry it was a primary infantry war machine. So the Parthians would shoot the Roman’s from horse and always turned and shot when almost out of archer range. Parthian shot turned into parting shot
Rome for that reason and many others was the best empire more than Alexander or the mongols. The Roman’s fought the most varied enemies were as the mongols really just ransacked nomad villages and weaker peoples

@@David-ns4ym Maybe in the early days of the Mongols when Genghis was still uniting all the clans, but they would go on to fight many different types of militaries to include calvary-based, infantry-based, mixed, fortified cities, and even European knights. The Mongols had one of the most successful militaries of all time that excelled in many different realms - not just pillaging. This included logistics, intelligence, reconnaissance, psychological, maneuver, and siege warfare.
Also, when you say 'weaker,' if you mean less-resourced/smaller then it's kind of hard to make the argument that the Jin Dynasty was that when the Mongols were still a bunch of Nomads that had just stopped stealing each others brides. If you mean 'weaker' as in less tough, then that's because nobody was tougher than the Mongols at that time.

They fought with an underhanded grip, but due to this nifty joint called the shoulder, they could rotate their arm so that they could fight with the spear above their head.
Underhanded grip = spear point forward, holding the spear at your side, thumb would be forward. Overhand grip would be spear point to the rear, thumb forward. Overhand grip = shake-weight stabbing motion. No power. No control. Underhand grip thrust (held above shoulder height) incorporates shoulder, torso, back, ass, legs.

    • @Lycurgus1982

@@mercb3ast Ah, yes. I think you might be overlooking the fact that spears had sharp tips at both ends and your friend behind you is not going to like you drawing back. It has been demonstrated that turning your shoulder exposes your underarm to attack and leaves the space to your right difficult to manage. Hoplite warfare, for the most part, was a press and didn't require lancing your opponent. They were aiming for a quick thrust to the face and deflection, which the overhand stance lends nicely.
This demonstration reveals why this method seems to work best.

Regimen, without the t at the end. Regimen means a course of exercises or dietary plan. A regiment is a section of an army.

ah, you left out the best part about the story of the soldier painting a little fly on his shield. apparently when one of the other soldiers asked him what the hell he was doing painting a tiny fly he responded with something like "when i'm falling upon my enemies it will look as big as a lion to them"

The hoplites or the common man where all part of mandatory conscription and training. In Sparta men above the age of 8 - 10 started training to be hoplites.
In Athens,Thebes and other Greek City states. Young men between the ages of 13 to 17 where trained for 4 to 5 years of Mandatory conscription where they learnt how to fight. After the Mandatory period was over the Men had the choice to continue with further training in order to join the Elites or permanent infantry of the city serving as Hoplites full time. Until the age of 40 to 45 . After that they where only recalled in dire situations such as Huge invasions like the Persian invasion.
During times of War preperation all the conscripts where recalled and retrained for the maximum amount of time availiable , in order to freshen them up.
There was also Mandatory yearly attendance for young men and men till the age of 35 where they where retrained and their performance was evaluated.
Many of these points are mentioned in Xenophons personal training Diaries and texts of Laws in City states like Athens and Thebes.
Men who did not bear arms , did not partake in the military training or excersize to keep a battle ready body where not allowed to voted at all and their citizenship was revoked.

This letter opener looks more like the spartan version of xiphos(length wise) than a normal xiphos. You also need a bit longer dory and add a butt spike on it.
