The range advantage of a longer blade wouldnt matter as much in the scrum of battle, but a short sword would be suited to another tactic that Spartans excelled at - raiding and ambushes, where a short sword is probably just as good in a fight.

Rome used the short sword and a pilum spear. They also used lead bullets fired from a sling. An enemy of the Greeks killed many hoplites one day with just teenagers and slings. The Greeks were marching in full armor and the slingers attacked them from a distance. Of course the Greeks broke ranks to pursue and were slow in bronze plate…. The slingers has no armor and just ran ahead and then fired back. The slingers were deadly accurate and killed many elite hoplites. I think it was the dacians or a tribe near Croatia. The origin of the “parting shot” comes from the Romans who fought the parthians and Rome did not rely on cavalry it was a primary infantry war machine. So the Parthians would shoot the Roman’s from horse and always turned and shot when almost out of archer range. Parthian shot turned into parting shot Rome for that reason and many others was the best empire more than Alexander or the mongols. The Roman’s fought the most varied enemies were as the mongols really just ransacked nomad villages and weaker peoples

In Athens,Thebes and other Greek City states. Young men between the ages of 13 to 17 where trained for 4 to 5 years of Mandatory conscription where they learnt how to fight. After the Mandatory period was over the Men had the choice to continue with further training in order to join the Elites or permanent infantry of the city serving as Hoplites full time. Until the age of 40 to 45 . After that they where only recalled in dire situations such as Huge invasions like the Persian invasion. During times of War preperation all the conscripts where recalled and retrained for the maximum amount of time availiable , in order to freshen them up. There was also Mandatory yearly attendance for young men and men till the age of 35 where they where retrained and their performance was evaluated. Many of these points are mentioned in Xenophons personal training Diaries and texts of Laws in City states like Athens and Thebes. Men who did not bear arms , did not partake in the military training or excersize to keep a battle ready body where not allowed to voted at all and their citizenship was revoked.
