53 years ago, at the age of 11, I was exposed to majesty and beauty of J.S. Bach, when a song called "Joy," by a group of studio musicians under the name Apollo 100 released their stylized arrangement of Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring. I worked at becoming a Classical Guitarist from shortly after that time on, and still get calls today to perform one of Bach's most well known, and beloved Cantatas. I still get chills down my spine, when I hear the piece, 53 years later. Thank you for an excellent performance.
I had exactly this piece (and I mean this exact actual piece & player) played at my dear Mom's funeral last August (2017) as the entry music whilst her 5 sons and son-in-law carried her in for her service. As you say, Steve, absolutely perfect!
As you say Steve, the tempo is exactly right. Too slow and it can be unrecognisable - too fast and it sounds like the organist is in a race against time to finish!
I grew up in Brooklyn NY, and every Sunday our church organist at 4th Ave. Methodist would play before the service started and frequently played this piece. You can't believe how good it sounds on a 32 pipe organ. I waited all week for Sundays just to hear her play. Beautiful, beautiful music. It was 1963 and I was 12 yrs. old and fell in love with the pipe organ. Thank you.
Hallo Marty, good morning to you and Willem the organist! Marty, you have written such a beautiful & moving comment. Listening to the organist playing so beautifully while reading your words made me cry, cry of Joy! My grand-father loved so much to hear the organ. Especially Bach. Thank you Willem and Marty! Groetjes from Amsterdam
You made my night shine... a singular dash of memories 20years ago, in an empty church listening to Fausto, the organ tuner, testing after get his job done. Place, Iglesia de San Francisco, Ferrol, Spain. Thanks.
More beautiful Bach! Showing he could not only write incredible counterpoint and harmony but also some of the most beautiful melodies ever written! And this is one of them! 😀
@@twillert-organ-projects The organist at my childhood church used to play this for me whenever I'd come visit because he knew it was my favourite. He died earlier this year. Your organ set up is very similar to how he played it so it brought me great comfort. RIP Frank Thacker.
This was my lullaby as a baby, parents have remarked since that I flat out refused to sleep when this wasn't played. Your version is actually pretty close to how the vinyl sounded. Great work.
This arrangement is from Maurice Duruflé. Edited by: Éditions Musicales Alphonse Leduc, Paris. Title: "Réjouis-toi mon âme" (werde munter, mein Gemüthe) ou "Jésus, que ma joie demeure" extrait de la cantate no. 147 Transcription pur Orgue par Maurice Duruflé I altered a few notes in the very last section of the arrangemen
Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. A wonderful interpretation, and the tempo just about perfect. I find organists either rush this piece or drag it. Many thanks for a brilliant rendition.
You're right but not 100%. Yes, Bach was inspired by that which moves his feelings in order to compose this beautiful masterpiece. But it is not a muse, it is much more than that. Yes, it is Bach's "creation", nothing or nobody has done it before him. Although, it is not a creation out of nothing. Bach modified things previously acquired, namely: he did not invent the pipe organ, he had learned music from his teachers, his believes were not invented by him, not even his body was 100% of his own, he had been conceived and given birth by his mother. Thus we have to go back in time until we reach the first "motor" which happens to be the end towards his work was inspired: Beauty and Love. And as Dostoevsky said in his novel "The Idiot": «Beauty will save the world»
Dejligt afslappende
Thank you for this pure and beautiful rendition! I have used the video, in addition to my own listening pleasure, also to show my grandaughter (6 yrs) how different sounds and melodies are formed by the player on this instrument and how wind and pipes work in music!
Thank you! I really admire organ players and it was lovely to see the organ! I've heard this piece with the main chorale tune played on the oboe...quite exquisite!

It is very good. You are correct. Its one of my most treasured pieces of Gods music. As much as I like the violin, this piece can only be done well on the organ. Fine fine job. Pat yourself on the back Willem van Twillert

Thank you for your interesting story
As much as I love Bach in any form, there is something so pure and so close to the source in the pipe organ. Thank you.

I like the sound
Gracias Maestro. Ud me ha transportado al siglo XVIII.
Finally! A tempo that sounds RIGHT! A lot of organists play it so slowly that the chorale is almost unrecognizable. This is PERFECT! Well played!

Willem van Twillert, your playing is simply fantastic! Thank you for bringing such beautiful music to the world! Saintrray
This is great music which reminds me of my time in Germany and Switzerland 1973
Excellent choice of stops. The Nasard and the Flute just give the right sound, and I love the Vox Humana on that organ. Nice articulation, too.
My favourite organ piece, and beautifully played. Thank you.

Bedankt Willem-fine playing and wonderful church pictures!
