Went to buy my lady a Martin yesterday for her July 03 birthday. I am a Martin man and have owned one of my Martins, a D35 from new in 1972. Played the Martin for an hour, asked what else do you have in this price bracket. Played another brand then was brought a Larrivee. Played it for 5 minutes and told them with a smile on my face "this is the one". Blew the Martin away by over three times better.
A good and used Larrivee D-02 in 1999 has helped me uncovered and discovered I was born a musician, even without formal musical and guitar training. The great sound of my D-03 gave me the inspiration to play guitar, I ended up selling my Taylor, Gibson, Tacoma, etc. I will never compare big makers but I must say the Larrivee sound is my call and I also admire Jean Larrivee's spirit, gift and integrity. Cheers.
wow, using words like "magic".... . "listening to the wood"....."new life" ...like a "child"...."like a good wine "......"can't compromise"...."longevity" ....."even after 35 years i am always looking for that sound",,,,,from a guitar maker ! thanks jean for being and doing what you do!
I've played electric guitar 30 years, and believe it or not last week I bought my first acoustic, a Taylor 214e. A couple of days after a friend recommended I play a Larrivee, so just out of curiosity I went to play one and took my taylor to A/B the guitars together. I came back with the Larrivee.
I am amazed at the tone, action and strength in correct use of wood of my L-03 12 string Larrivée guitar. It is truly a great guitar. I have had many 12 string guitars and some have failed because the face was not strong enough. This guitar has impressive bracing and it a truly great guitar.
Jean said "It took me 20 years to learn how to handle the wood". I have evidence that he might have been pretty good earlier. I just bought what I think is the best guitar in the world, which he built perhaps in his 8th year out of being a auto mechanic. Some folks don't even know how much they know.
just took delivery of a rosewood d60 and i am delighted with it , the nut and saddle could do with a little lowering but its a great instrument and looks as good as it sounds
My L03R is fantastic, and I got it for a great deal! It was listed as B-Stock because of a virtually undetectable scratch where it sits on my leg. So no one will ever even notice it. But it was roughly $800 of the retail value. I've played martins and taylors that are more than double what I payed, and theres not a huge difference. As far as I'm concerned $1200 for an acoustic with a solid sitka spuce top. solid rosewood back and sides, and made in the usa is a steal
John have you ever considered put down on paper these many aspects to your "recipe", so others who come after you may learn from your tremendous experience and skills?
I have a L"arrivee" brazillian, J 10 E", an incredible guitar. A better instrument than I deserve way beyond my skill level. It inspires me to play beyond what I could ever accomplish thanks Gene
my Larrivee D-03r is the best sounding guitar I have played. It is even better than the Martin D 28 Great guitars!! And now I want a Larrivee LV 10!!!!
Wonderful, humble man, who loves Guitars. My D40 comes in a few days, I feel like a child the night before Christmas! BTW, who is the guitarist at the end of the video?
@@ICBBZZ I am! I do it all the time! Idid it earlier today. What are you? A proud boy? Can you only get it up for a bowl of racist cereal? Whatever that is.
I completely agree, I grew up carving wood and there is something about it, after a time you 'know' wood, its almosta spiritual connection adn I completely understand him letting the guitars 'relax' - you have to else you loose them. Its like they loose their soul - just try a far eatsern guitar that was a guitar 48 hours after the tree was felled for proof of that!
Great to hear his passion for acoustic guitar building... There is nothing like a Larrivee.acoustic.Let you hands discover their sound. These are the last guitars I will ever buy. I would never sell my Larrivee....or my 47 & 55 Gibson J35 & 45 . The Gibson's are a different world. They were good 50 years ago but Not today. Love your Larrivee and they will alaways give it back LOL Alberta Dave
Love my D03. It's bold and folky. Do a search on 'Alfred Navarro DADGAD' and hear how good Elixer nanoweb light guage strings sound on it. If I could afford another ax, I would like the other end of the spectrum also; a Breedlove. Those can be such sweet strummers.
Justin played here some huge Larrivee, it must be Jumbo..I would like to know what guitar it was..I have LO3R, it is good guitar, but if I could I would have buy high gloss finish guitar, it is just better tone. I bought Larrivee mostly because I saw Jimmy Wahlsteen played on L-O9. I guess he brought it up to my sight... I was in love with that sound, but I could not afford L-09 so I bought LO3R. I thought those are almost the same guitars but not quite. LO3R has a good sound, it is woody but it doesn't have that sparkle of high gloss finished guitar which is again one thousand and more on the price..So yeah I don't have anything against satin finish, some guitars are even better with tin layer of finish, but next time I go on high gloss no doubt.
This man makes me proud to be a Larrivée! Thank you so much Jean!
I bought a 1981 L19 in 1985 and today it plays and sounds beautiful. It’s a testament to how well it was built.

Yes!!! thank you for putting this up! i was always so curious to see the rest of the phunkdified video
This guy sounds like the kind of guy you want building ALL your stuff.

I've had mine since I was a teenager, almost 20 years ago...best action, best guitar!
A legend AHEAD of his time.

I don't think I've ever played a L'arrivee, but I think I might buy one in the future, simply because this guy is so cool. lol
Great guitar playing at the end

AWESOME!!! Thanks for answering your calling Jean!!!
Thank you so much Jean :)
Really cool video.
My first real guitar was a Larrivee LS-4 electric, back in the 1980s...I still have it, and it still rocks!
Wonderful...
Whoah, not my '72 D35 but the one in the store... laughs. 45 years "breaking in" cannot be duplicated by a new guitar.
Martin, Larrivee and Lowden guitars are my favorite guitar makers
That’s my trio.

That’s a guitar worthy of Bruce Cockburn.
LUV my two Larrivees!!!

what are you talking about humble? the whole video was him stroking his ego
I'm guessing you're an expert on stroking...

Anyone who can create the type of product he did, can and should STROKE HIS OWN EGO ALL HE WANTS!!!!

I have a 'spiritual connection' to my 'wood' too. My morning wood.

just got say those guitar are just the best Mw
Love the sound of a Larrivee guitar, but wish the fretboards were not so flat - too flat for me to enjoy playing one.
Me gustaría que estuviese traducido el vídeo al español.
How long I could have guitar like that, very expensive :-(

Lol whatever. I think it was just something I misheard, can't be bothered rewatching.
🤣

I’m the best Blahblah This guy should listen to him self, I actually don’t think he’s humble. So many great tone tops out there.
Well, when you are passionate, and you are THAT GOOD...
Good thing there are plenty of good guitar makers out there. So there’s no need for me to ever buy one from B.C.
You did copy mr. Larrivee.
Good guitar, bad documentary.
