Since the beginning of the mortgage crisis one and a half million Americans have lost their homes. With banks repossessing their houses, many have been left no other option than to move into their cars.
The streets of California are now filled with people who call their car their home. Jennifer Clement, explains, "The estimated value of our house went to 120,000 U.S. dollars within a month. After losing all the money, we literally landed on the street and were forced to live in our caravan". It is a vicious circle: Without a job - no home. Without an apartment - no job.

One thing you may want to add to the van (if the budget allows) is a cargo trailer, which you can use as a bathroom and kitchen area while using the van portion as a sleep area. Wish you well. :)

Feelthefx solar and wind power is a nice concept but you will not be able to do this in a HOA home...these monsters will run you into debt with fines and overtake your home leaving you on the curbside. HOA and POA are criminals. Equal opportunity Housing is violated...

Living in a van or rv isn't as bad as people think. You actually have money and low expenses. I saved 20,000 my first year and been in a van 5 years. I'm close to 100,000 off my income alone. Not to mention my side hustle. With only 150 dollars a month for expenses I'll be in this van a long time with my pockets loaded eating 50,00 breakfasts every morning. And I'm not homeless cuz no one can put me out my van it's mine.
It isn't that it's bad, it's because such cost saving measures have become necessary. It's fine if you chose van dwelling to reduce your costs, it's quite something else if you've been forced into it by circumstances.

Couldn't agree more. Living in our RV allowed us to pay off $52,000 in student loans in 4 years, and we've been 100% debt free since. Best decision we ever made.
the city should take some of the abandoned shopping malls and turn them into housing units. The people could work off part of their rent 1 or 2 days/week doing community service till they find a full time job.

I've seen this done,they just can't have stove or doors in there tiny units,then they can zone it differently,forgot when the mall was but seen it on you tube,mostly people lived there half the time doctors,people who travel for work a lot etc,,,,very interesting though

Now we are in 2018 and I can't find a one bedroom apartment for under $1200 per month in southern California. I'ts just insane!

yeah, I remember driving from SF to San Diego with a friend a few years back, it was a looong drive as we decided to take the scenic route of driving along coastal highway 1, about 6 hours in, we pulled off the road to get some rest before continuing. We were woken about 2am by the cops telling us it was illegal to sleep inside a vehicle in California. They said we could sleep outside the vehicle but not in it. So we ended up in our sleeping bags sleeping in the grass next to our car. Luckily it didnt rain! I remember thinking how insane that law is waking up with my head next to the tire of my car and thinking about how my parents had been hippies in California in the 60's and the freestyle life they lived back then, sure cant do that now!

I lived 10 years in my used '86 Fleetwood motor home, always in parks with hookups and bath houses and/or nearby truck stops since my RV frig broke and I needed the shower space for a less expensive one. When my RV A/C broke and Hurricane Rita crushed my cab-over, I put in a small, cheaper window unit. The previous owner advised against using the RV range/oven, so I used a hot plate...no baking : - ( The most disturbing thing was the leaf blowers that began at 4 am getting closer and closer. Also, being very ill or injured is difficult in an RV, esp. a van or car...you can't eat right, sleep right, heal properly.
In spite of the derogs, I always considered my RV home. It was comfy, cozy, everything was in easy reach and had a great engine. I've lived in the cab of my pre-owned Mazda p/u, a used Ram railroad van and thank my Almighty Heavenly Father continuously for my wheels. They kept me from pushing a grocery cart around, from being a bona fide bag-lady...exposed to the elements
I now live in a shipping container house. When I told a friend I hadn't seen in decades that I lived in a shipping container house, she asked, "Are you down-sizing?" I said, "No! I'm moving up!"
I tried sleeping in my car on the side of the road. The cops came to my driver's side window and told me to move along. So I was forced to get a tent and hide out in the woods.

@Zebra Lady75 Policy call it 'vagrancy' which is against the law. In California, they have relaxed the law because too many are sleeping on the sidewalks. In our state you can't pitch a tent on the sidewalk. That house trailer is blocking someone's million dollar view and cops won't allow it for long.
They did that to me too I was in the back covered up and just stayed still and silent until they left. Didn't take long. Tapped on my window a couple times and kept it moving. I do the same thing if someone knocks my door or rings my door bell. Won't catch me answering a damn thing without an invite. Keep it moving.
The worst part about the crash was not that the wall streeters gambled and lost and had to be bailed out, not that all these people lost their homes, not that these assholes all got huge bonuses for their incompetence but that they tried to sue the government after they got bailed out because they wanted bigger bonuses.

I thank God that my husband and I have been debt free since our mid 40s. We are in our early 60s now. No debt and own our own home. We have a large home, so at some point we may sale and down size? My husband is still working. But if all else fails at least we have a home. Im so thankful. Being debt free is so freeing.
We lived in 38ft Gem from 96 to 02. I worked construction and my wife joined me on the road. It was a heckuva lot of fun and we never felt confined. Living in a camper is no a bad thing.
I moved to California from Texas in 1976. I very quickly realized I couldn't afford to rent a garage in California for what I paid for my four bedroom house in Texas. I purchased a used motorhome and found a trailer park to live in. I've upgraded to a a newer larger motorhome but I still live in the same trailer park. A studio apartment in my area is $1,200. I'm lease locked at $565 utilities and gardner included. I beat the cost of California housing years ago.

Playing the cat and mouse in Cali is very grooling, and wears on you after a while. I ended up West last year for 9 months, living in the back of my truck, I had a handful of areas to park and sleep and finding new spots was always tricky. State parks that didn't charge, and hidden Vally parks gave me a mind rest in the day, but every night, the hunt began for a safe place to sleep. Not just to watch for cops, but people "thugs" and so forth. I did make a lot of friends, and found a great community of people who lived this way and they all stuck together very well. A lot simply liked the privacy but the others were close and accepting. I eventually found a good job out there, worked 6 months and though I kinda liked it, my dad convinced me to come home and I was able to transfer back closer to family. I will admit I've gotten hooked on the freedom you get from living this way and it's really not as horrible as the outside world makes it out to be. ;)
+Stray Kittie I'm guessing different people experience it in different ways? If it a guy on his own, may well be lonely or loving the freedom. If it parents with children it may be very difficult and stressful?
I subbed. Thanks for the info. I’ve always had a fear of being homeless. You never know what the life may bring you. So many people out there struggling but we always adapt and learn to make the best of our situations!

When I bought my home, I made sure to buy a home I could afford. It was a 30 year fixed. Then when interest rates fell, I re-financed and turned my 30 year mortgage into a 20 mortgage. Then at 60, I paid off the house and retired. People that bought into the adjustable rate mortgages were just fooling themselves. My house is now worth 3 times what I paid for it, even now.
Exactly, when we bought a home my husband left the country to work with bombs dogs , his idea. I slammed my mortgage every month he gave me to live on, instead of spending it foolishly, i think i paid it off in 18 months. Good thing God gave me this wisdom because my ex never returned so me and our autistic son can live mortgage free now.

Two years ago, my wife and I saw what was coming. We went out of our way, and paid our house off. Our friends said we were "paranoid", and that would never happen in the U.S. Now, they are all in danger of foreclosure. They all live way beyond their means, no matter what we said.

I have spent the last two years trying to get out from under 40 years of junk that does not being me a better value of life. I have made a good dent just using craigslist to sell. In another couple of years I can sell the house and full time rv. You are much better off having a few possessions that you love vs. so much stuff that you can't even remember what you own. One thing that struck me about the lady in the car in this video is she said her stuff was in storage. There was probably not enough stuff of actual dollar value to pay for two months worth of the fees.
Exactly , we just bought a 35 ft Winnie and are starting our rv living journey . Because we wanted to not because we were forced to. People are crazy to spend so much on rent each month, we have a really nice rv with 2 big slides, it’s just the 2 of us so it’s perfect
I lived in a 30ft fith wheel for 6 years. I loved it! I found a campground for less than $500 a month which included all utilities and unlimited Wi-Fi so I had no problems with doing my job. Had my camper towed there and had my car (and pets). Contacted a home propane company who hooked up a large tank to my camper and came to my camper every few months to refill. Lots cheaper than continually moving around, where the gas alone kills you. I should add that this was on the east coast in a small town, but tourist area. Only 15 minutes from any shopping I wanted, and I was on a river front lot. But anyone staying in California will have a harder time. Leave there and you can have a decent RV life for as long as you need.
I kind of sleep in a car, a really big one. A semi truck. I've been an over the road driver for over 12 years now and now I am retiring and winding down. The truck is set up with the refrigerator, inverter and all the appliances I need. I used to be stuck in the mortgage, car payment and credit card trap and I don't miss it one bit. I'll only be able to work part-time due to retiring at 62, my Toyota Tacoma is set up to live in with a fiberglass utility body. I don't consider this punishment at all vs living in a house with all the expenses, upkeep and maintenance, no thanks! I'm considering a second vehicle that gets better gas mileage and could be set up to camp in so I can adventure further out at a lower cost. I'm sitting in the sleeper right now getting unloaded and watching these videos on my tablet. I've been able to save a lot of money and I have a pretty decent savings balance now.

I have good friends who are immigrants...they are AMAZED, totally that the southern border is allowing people to come thru, and getting them all govt benefits, and US citizens are living in the streets! They know something is terribly wrong here
Man, I've been afraid of that situation forever. That's why I went major cautious when I bought my home. I wanted something that I could maintain the payments on even if I had to change jobs. I always paid extra and now after 11 years It's finally paid off. It's a heck of a load off my mind. Now I'd have to have a serious personal financial disaster in my life to lose this place. It's just a working class condo but (knock on wood) I'll never be homeless.

Renting is fine if you had a good landlord or you had a good amount of money..
I'm sure as heck glad I didn't have to do what you did. I bought my house outright- no mortgage payments to contend with. I have an $84 annual property tax fee, I pay my low monthly electricity bill which averages about $30 a month. My water comes from a clean fresh well.

Not so much the government as the parties. You get to choose between the Republicans who proudly take money to look out for rich people, or the Democrats who take money under the table to look out for rich people. So nobody is interested in controlling the export of jobs and immigration so ordinary people can earn enough to get by. The government is civil service workers, wage slaves like everybody else, told what to do and, more important, what not to do by the bought politicians. The answer is to get the legalized bribery out of our democracy, but I don't know how you do that if no party is on your side. Perhaps the first step is to corner your elected officials and ask how they got a million, 2 million, a billion dollars to spend in their last campaign. Teach them that no amount of money can get you elected if you betray the voters.

In my country you be immediately ‘arrested’ and forced into a low cost government housing renting at about $80/mth. On top of that you forced to accept $300 worth of utility and food vouchers as a starter.

The perfect storm: The government forcing banks to loan money to people who were not required to have skin in the game. No down payment or very little down. The economy dumped causing layoffs. Some could not afford to pay the mortgage and had no emergency funds to continue paying mortgage until another job could be found. Several factors came into play.

John Allison - I just saw another youtube vid from the banksters side - and I don't know if you can call them crooked or conniving, really. More greedy than anything else. All they saw was that bonus at year-end. The homeowners on main street didn't factor at all. It's like little guy doesn't matter. Gotta make that bonus at all costs and get their numbers up.

12 years later and we are still moving into our vans..many diff reasons..many diff situations outlooks n attitudes..ive been in my van for 3 years and I love it..live on ssdi..no rent worries etc..

That's what the banks told us there's no equity. For 18 years paying down a mortgage. It wasn't easy at any expensive life without a vacation. The banks always wins.thayalwayswin and who gets stuck with all the depth the home owner's. Taxes keep going up sallerys stay dragnet.

The real problem is our school systems are designed to train obedient factory workers, forever just barely making all of their credit card payments.

One class each year in every grade (mandatory) should be about money management.
But if the majority of people learned about proper money management, the banks wouldn't be able to continue foreclosing n undereducated idiots.

I also work a full-time job, so I have enough money to pay for my food and gas, and tuition bills. The point is, I would not be able to do this otherwise without living in my car. I am self-dependent.
I have a 2000 high top van in my driveway. People ask me why don't you sell it. I tell them I might have to live in it one day.

WOW... you make it sound so bad. I am converting a van to live in. Not leaving until my last kid graduates college in January... and it also gives me time to get my van the way I want it! I am getting away from the rat race. I am retired military and just retired from the workforce, kids are grown, nothing keeping me here in this city anymore. Now my plans are to travel the US of A and live my life! So many things to see and do... My journey starts soon.......can't wait!

Van Life is bigger than ever, if I was 20ish, I'd be living in a van in CA, surfing, mountain biking, traveling, hiking, anything but what im doing now.
Hard for me to feel any sympathy for a lawyer who worked all those years and didn't save.

i am one of those that lost their home if 12 years to bank of america fraud and became homeless in my van, i have met many others since 2008 to now in 2016 where still homeless or landless - i towed my garden for years!
I'm on the verge of losing my house in So Cal, working 40 to 60 hours a week and paying child support I just can't do it anymore.thinking of selling my house and cars to live in a rv.

Too buy a house in HI, IT'S FRICKEN RIDICULOUS... But's it's illegal to have these types of any RV'S on Oahu to live in it like these... I'd RATHER live like this then keep on paying for escalating rent every year along with all of the utilities.
It's not just renters. The one who owns the property has to pay escalating costs too and he has to pass that down to the renters. Don't blame the owner.

This really puts everything into perspective. I am lucky enough to ve a stay at home mom and we live comfortably. My husband makes a little over 50,000 and right now we are waiting to here if he will get a promotion whuch will land him very close to six figures, it is all I can think about. I want him to get it so bad but I now I just feel greedy. I swear if he does end up getting this promotion we will give so much money to struggling families. Noone should have to live such a hard life. :(

This documentary you have shared to us, has made me so thankful for what I have. I have a 2 bedroom mobile home in the country, I get benefits from military and state, and I can survive on that. I pay 160. a month lot rent and then utilities. It is 2 acres deep in the country. I have a dream of traveling on the road, I have my own van a 1998 dodge Caravan which is also paid for that was 800. cash, and I am building it out. I have been blessed over this last year. My home is paid for 2000.00. It is dooable, to live, it is just Calif has gotten crazy with rent and price of homes. I used to live there in Huntington Beach. The American Dream can happen, you have to make it happen. I am not bragging any means I am stating facts. Why can't people share homes and help each other out, and share bills. And have roommates. It makes sense to me. I have a roommate as well that helps with things.

People should not live beyond there means, I could afford a house but I choose to live in a 14' x 52' mobile home on 3 acres, I have owned for 20 yrs. even when I was making $ 20.00 hr I could still live off minimum wage.
I agree people should not live beyond their means. However, not everyone has a mobile and they have to rent or buy and in this case when the cost of rent and homes going up, it's very hard to save for a rainy day. It's hard for even two incomes now. America needs to look after their own. God help us!!!

very good doc......up here in Seattle the city has declared war on RVs and tent encampments.....I found a place to park my RV with sewer, water, and power.....a place to park my 2 trucks....and is relatively safe....I have a full time job...thanks to some friends who found this trailer park.....ahh the stories I can tell

Yes, in making a comment on this video about living in a van , that I've seen here on youtube , I would like to say that I have been in a van , a 91 GMC van for approximately two years now and I love it . I once lived on Beach Boulevard property for like 34 years , I sold my home, I didn't lose it, but after going through a divorce 14 years ago I had to start all over again and a van is like a steel tent on wheels, I have an inverter here, I joined the gym so a gym that I can go to 24 hours around the clock so showers and getting cleaned up and tending on to health needs have not been a problem and even before then down here in Long Beach , Mississippi you can park on the beach enjoy the beach everyday, which I do I'm usually six or seven days a week out in the Gulf of Mexico on an inner tube , enjoying the Sun and the water and if I want to take a shower without going to the gym there are free showers here on the beach and there are eating establishments across the street from the beach, a service station, Waffle House, and seafood restaurants , it is really nice down here on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi and so anyway folks living in the van isn't that bad after all , see now I can live on the beach and not have to pay taxes, but when living on the beach for 34 years in the house, taxes had to be paid , so it does have its advantages and it grieves me when I hear some men's wives on some of these videos make a statement that they had told their husbands that they would divorce them before living in the trailer or probably even more so they would if living in a van, my response to that is I think you're a bit spoiled like most Americans are with all the conveniences and luxuries of life that we've been blessed with for many years and I think that everybody needs to get a different mindset and get ready for hard times because hard times are not only here but we're getting ready to face nuclear war under this president that we're under right now, the Bible does not lie , and it lets me know Americas going to be hit by nuclear bombs folks, and once an Ahab takes control over any nation just read what judgement fell on the land when Jezebel and Ahab we're in control, what when you have a Supreme Court that's in agreement to legislate that which is an abomination in the sight of God , you can look for problems and the problems are here and they're only going to get intense so America look to lose more homes and so you need to start getting ready cuz you're not going to be in your home much longer, even get a tent, even though I've got the van I've even got a tent because of something ever happens to the van I'll at least have a tent over my head and God wants us to be thankful no matter what providence brings our way because this is not our home anyway we've got a better home waiting for in heaven, thank you Jesus, Amen. There was a chap talking to a reporter on the news that lost everything due to hurricane Sandy he lived on the Jersey shore, all that was left was part of his roof lying in a heap on his yard. His wife was more upset than him and he said he's 60yrs old and has to start all over again and was grateful he's still alive. It will be an eye opener for those that had everything and home comforts that had an adverse view to homeless and disenfranchised people.

I broke my ankle at work had a job that paid little or nothing lost my motorhome I'm losing my health I've lived in my car for about 35 days with a broken ankle I got a little time out during a free spell from a so-called charity homeless shelter in my area I've never seen such a bunch of incompetent heartless unrealistic imitation bureaucrats in my life I've watched them help themselves to everything that's for the homeless then turn their nose down at the homeless and truth be known they were homeless until I got this job and take out every Petty bias that they have on the people within the shelter I don't know what will happen or become of me now I've almost lost everything while here in Miami they charge a tax on food and beverage for the homeless and then throw parties for themselves wearing tuxedos slapping themselves on the back pulling down salaries there as well I've learned one thing and I've learned it well in life you follow the money and it always takes you to the heart of something

S&P and Moody's gave AAA ratings to MBSs and CDOs that were actually much higher risk because they were filled with mortgages that were given to people who couldn't pay. Banks passed on the risk to each other and made a killing in the short run. However, in the end, when people couldn't pay, housing prices fell as foreclosures and defaults rose. There was a surplus of available homes and the banks could no longer rely on the housing prices being high to keep the value. In the end, an economy based on mortgages and selling risk is not sustainable. We need to move back to an economy based on production instead of loan-sharking.

I envy those that choose to live in vans and travel. They are smart. They are the ones that are living. Of course not everyone would chose that life, but if you have a good paying job and you hate it, scale back, dump the job and do something you love. Yes, you can do it.
Stop lying saying they're drawing their water from public toilets I was homeless and there's no shame in getting water out of a sink so stop saying they're getting their water out of a toilet them people are living they had their family their children and a roof over their head and to me that is beautiful God bless them and may be just a little different situation but they still have each other all respect
