How to Live in Your Car, Save Money and Be Free

  • Four years ago I launched a website called ElectricBikeReview.com to help people discover ebikes and make informed purchase decisions. To do this, I left my tech job in Austin and began staying with friends and ultimately living in my car part time so I could save money and travel. Often times this meant camping in a Walmart parking lot, on BLM land or in the driveway at a friend’s house. My hope is that this video inspires you to think differently about your own challenges and dreams. You can strive to earn more or learn to spend less and ultimately, I’ve done a bit of both. I’ve had to make sacrifices along the way but also learned to love minimalism and the freedom of camping. My first car was a Toyota 4Runner but I switched to a Prius after one year for improved comfort, better gas mileage and sustainability. It’s more than just the car though, a lot of little adjustments have been made and accessories have been purchased to make it livable and really work. The following list coincides pretty well with the video, providing links to the different products I use or think are important to consider. I hope it helps you :D

    Im 64, I really wanted to keep working, but my employer went broke in The Depression. People my age don’t get hired even in good times. I can get reduced Social Security now, I have a small pension and funds saved in my dwindling 401k. Living in my car, hauling my bike and kayak around could be an amazing way to spend my final years. I’ve removed all but the driver’s seat out of my Suzuki SX4 4x4. Still, I’m hesitant to take the plunge. Videos like this are full of ideas and tips, and are very exciting and motivating. I’m in great physical shape and think I could do farm work in my travels. Hopefully this fall my journey will begin. After all, life is a journey not a destination.

    I was a cross-country truck driver for 20 years. I lived in my truck didn't have a house or a car didn't need one. I'm stationary in Southern California now and does this suck. I'm in the process of figuring out different ways to earn a living while traveling. Then I plan to get back out there. People that live in the rat race have no idea that there's a whole subculture of nomadic Travelers. RVs vandwellers it's not just retired people that travel around in their RVs. People that live in the rat race and work their ass off everyday to make somebody else rich they don't realize that they're the ones that are losing out.

The comments are open and I host some forums so owners can chime in with long term experience and stuff. And yeah, I mostly review expensive ebikes because that's what shops have and I can't afford to buy and review stuff at this stage. Always open to feedback :)

      Before I started EBR I worked for Accenture, Hewlett-Packard and Google... it was very stressful and I remember being terrified to leave, even more scared to sleep in my car (got no sleep the first night). It's still a bit thrilling but there has been so much peace to gather along the road. This world is incredibly beautiful, there is so much to take in from the big empty spaces. I also get inspired listening to audio books (love Michael Crichton) and have had great phone calls with my Grandparents and friends. I guess most of these things can be done without living in your car but I'm glad it helped me find them and I wish you luck with your own life adventure :)

      It's now pretty common to "car camp" a night or two just to avoid the hideous commute times in the Bay Area.
      Just be very careful about air quality in a car cabin. I'd suggest even running an air filter and putting a combination CO/smoke detector in the cabin so you don't end up being asphyxiated on a cold night. This happened tragically in a tahoe ski resort parking lot when four girls parked (for lack of finding an affordable hotel) with the exhaust pushed up against a snow bank and kept the car running for warmth -- overnight it filled the cabin and they all were lost.

    • @Mazxlol
      @Mazxlol 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pam Candas you mean 3 girls? yeah sad situation. i would never sleep in a car that's running anyway!

    • @pamcandas
      @pamcandas 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In any case, horrific. We leave our old Prius "running" to keep the AC on for the dogs, though sometimes still get people irate at two dogs resting calmly while it's 100 degrees outside.
      It was one of the reasons to buy a (then) "expensive" new car, though of course it paid for itself by 1) getting over 40 mpg 2) never breaking down 3) maintenance was cheap compared to other makes 4) tires lasted and cost very little compared to previous (full sized) vehicles ... it has become the cheapest car I've owned since university driving the old family wagon that cost less when we bought it than two tires on my current car ... how we find ways to increase our costs to consistently exhaust our income ...
      The Prius re-invented the car -- it is the best "this is not a car, it's a household mobility appliance" and with 100K miles after 10 years, it's considered a "low mile" Prius and has great resale value.
      A full EV will replace it, but the Bolt is a bit too ... _quirky_ ... for now, and really needs to be bigger. I guess GM has a plan for other models, but the idea of a 200+ mile range in such a small EV, I think Tesla got the size "right" with their Model 3. I've also "car camped" in a Tesla Model X ... pure luxury even though the second row seats don't fold (strange, but true) there's helluva lot of space.

    I live in Pakistan although its a very poor country but 99% of peoples have homes even who are living below the poverty line. Some times it is the case here that one may not have enough to eat but still have roof over the head. It's really beyond me that why the USA wealthiest country ever does not have universal shelter. The Chinese have driven real estate prices beyond the reach of many in CA with their "investments". I'm waiting until after the next real estate market crash to purchase a home in LA. But more to your point, it's all about location. My dad bought 40 acres of land in Mexico for about $12,000. I assume that's similar to the price of real estate where you're from.

      You will be surprised to know the value sky-high value of property in Pakistan. Here it is considered the number one form of investment by far by the majority of people and also its only place left for people with black money to park it because of some loopholes. One of my cousins bought land in rural outskirt area of Chakwal city in Punjab province it cost him almost $16,000 per acre.

    Hell yeah, buddy! I love all of the modifications. I've been taking road trips in my 2010 Prius since I bought it in that year and nobody understands how great it is. Put the seats down, lay some blankets or a mat down for comfort and sleep under the stars. Wake up in the trailhead parking lot and get out there before all of the tourists are even awake.
    A note to those sleeping in a Prius overnight for the first time: the car is likely to make some whirring noises at odd intervals as pumps and fans do their thing. The dealership told me that this was part of its normal process, especially if the car has been driven a long distance that day. And, if you're going to lock the doors once you're inside, the "keys locked in car" alarm might go off. Takes a bit of playing with to figure out how to not set it off, but I think that, so long as all of the doors and hatch are already shut when you push the lock-all button on the front driver/passenger door, the alarm won't go off.

    Prius is extremely reliable and economical. My 2002 First Generation Prius drove past 280k miles with its original engine, transmission, ÁC, suspension, paint. It costs just pennies per mile. The Prius has been passing down to my college kids and they are very happy with the ease of parking and low cost of fuel refills.

    • @aright2lucidity
      @aright2lucidity 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Pier Louis If you choose the “red pill” then this is the truth. We are all slaves to a system called “the market”. We all work in a job that pays taxes that feeds this market. Who benefits from these taxes? The ‘World bankers’. The ‘world bankers’ is their real title (some call them the Illuminati, Freemasons ,etc, but in reality they are the ‘world bankers’ AKA the 1 percenters). They secretly control all of the worlds resources and economies. This system runs every western country. You, your neighbours, your town , your entire country borrows money at interest from these world bankers to stabilize your economy. The interest incurred is at such a high rate it is virtually impossible for your country to pay off. Hence why your leader( be it a president or prime minister) has one main priority, to reduce the deficit using any means necessary (war, new legislation, corporate greed) to pay back as much borrowed money as possible. This is why anyone who avoids taxes is labelled a fraud, and is tried and shamed publicly. Your country worries a lot about unemployment rates not because people are jobless, but because some people figure out working tax- less jobs is better than paying taxes to the government Yet somehow people are so ingrained into this system. So dependent on it, so much time and money invested in it , that they will fight tooth and nail to keep it running. Meanwhile the bankers run a separate program in your mind called ‘media’. This is done to help you accept their system. The ‘media’ provides sports, movies , celebrity news, gossip to keep your mind idle in hopes of making you passively and subconsciously accept their system. While keeping the masses divided by supplying you with ‘the news’. ‘The news’ is a mechanism whereby humans are kept divided on opinion and in trust. The more news you watch the more likely you are to lose faith in humanity. To lose trust and grow animosity towards other humans. This insures the masses will never unite...JFK signed executive order 11110 that abolished the Federal Reserve, a private central bank and returned the issuance of currency directly into the US treasury....6 months later he was dead in Dallas...Now they are running END GAME on you, are you ready for what they have in store..?

    Spent 3 and a half years in Australia living out of a car, I miss the freedom... but I also don’t miss the struggle. I do think that it’s a struggle that everyone should do as it very much builds character.
    I knew where every public wifi and public BBQ area was, and my gym membership was my lifeline as I would often just go there to shower.
    A few times I had some sketchy moments including a guy that was attempting to open my front passenger door. I scared the shit out of him after he realised someone was inside.

      Hmm... now that's a great question. I actually take my cars to a dealership first and have them do a full inspection (and tell them I'll be coming back to have everything fixed if I buy the car). It usually costs $100 and gives you some bargaining power to reduce the asking price if something is wrong. Like if the tires are worn down or the engine is rusted and the shock struts are bulging. My car must have been stored near the coast or something because it had a lot of rust. I asked it it was flooded and the dealer said no, just near a lot of salt water or something. It's still holding up great but I was able to lower the price and then did a very thorough cleaning job and replaced the hatch struts right away :)

      Hi, Cort! My apologies if I missed spelled your name. I have a few questions for you which may be off topic sorry. Do you have any of your personal e-bikes for sale? I'm shopping for e-bikes like you I'm trying to save money and find inexpensive.
      No offense, Court but you do bike reviews on mostly expensive bikes. And you even own in my opinion an expensive e-bike(so much for saving money) Yes, I visited your website and I looked at the affordable section but the way you describe economy e-bikes isn't really helpful. Mainly because you keep saying "low-end" and undermining the e-bike that I can't tell if the low priced e-bike is worth buying.
      I will disclose that I make about $16,000 a year gross pay but after taxes adjusted to 13000. I spend about $6000 in rent subtract that from 13000=$7000 for cost of living expenses. I don't see myself being able to buy e-bikes that cost more than $800 or over really. E-bikes cost as much as used cars.
      In the future I will like to see you evaluate more $500-$800 e-bikes with a professional opinion of whether or not it's worth buying. You have so much knowledge on e-bikes. I don't understand most of these companies, why should price dictate the quality? I'm an underpaid and minimum-wage earning employee yet the quality of my work is outstanding and I have exceeded my company's expectations. I recently received a 33 cents raise for my efforts while the loafers at my job continue to have employment. If companies or individuals can do something really amazing such don't like price dictate quality e.g. low price means low-quality(wrong) Sonders bike company had the right idea but they cut some corners. Most people who use e-bikes are those want basic transportation and can't immediately afford cars.

    • @tamasvarga67
      @tamasvarga67 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bezlichnyy No offense but if your budget is $5-800 better if you buy a normal city bike you might get some decent second hand. If you buy an ebike for $5-800 it will be some crap and soon you will end up paying more for replacement parts and servicing.

    • @bezlichnyy7675
      @bezlichnyy7675 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No offense taken. Thanks for your advice but I already own a non-electric manual bicycle. I'm trying to upgrade to an electric bicycle.
      I ride my bicycle almost daily so any bicycle that I own will need maintenance and servicing.
      No offense, but your wrong not all bicycle for the $500-$800 price range will be low-quality.
      What hinders us from buying a decent quality bicycle is lack of knowledge not necessarily our monetary budget. Since my knowledge is limited I ask the electric bicycle expert--Cort to help me out. There is a good bike out there for the price range I seek--I just don't know where to find it.

    • @tamasvarga67
      @tamasvarga67 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bezlichnyy Well... good luck finding a good quality ebike for $5-800. In Europe the decent ones start from ~1800€. You might get a cheap unknown Chinese brand with old tech and with heavy and low capacity battery but that's far from what I consider a good quality and when it breaks no support.

    Prius really is the best "car" to do this in. I didn't watch all the video but hopefully he mentioned the coolest thing about camping in a Prius. The Temperature control system that runs off the battery until it needs to use the engine at which point it will come on and recharge the battery. It's like a really really efficient generator that keeps you cool or warm anytime as well as play music/audio, etc.

I'm sure you can source some ethical t shirts stickers etc... also appreciate you're on the move but surely some family and friends could help with the storage and mail out... and ... you give a lot of great shout outs for good products... you are as credible and trustworthy as the Nullabor is long and flat... I think an EBR signature line is well in order.... in a world increasingly full of vapid twats... you shine as a beacon of decency... safe travels

      Thanks Leonie! I do my best... got some advertisers and am running a business but keep it lean and honest as best I can. That matters to me and I'm glad you noticed ;)

      Perhaps he doesn't want to sell merchandise like all the other, TH-cam monetised channels, because he has a few standards left. You see it with all the, monetised TH-cam channels, selling cheap junk made in China for pennies, and sold for a 1000% markup as merchandise. Its a pretty transparent attempt to make, even more money off hapless subscribers, who are already paying anyway by watching adverts etc...

    I own a 2012 Prius and bought it brand new and have camped in it as well. Love the gas mileage and the fact that you can run the heat or AC all night using minimal gas. Love your video

      Popcorn is a healthy, whole grain snack if you don't add lots of butter and salt to it.

      Thanks! I've turned the multi-ad feature off because I feel like it's annoying for people. Maybe someday I'll make merch or something, just want to help people and feel like I make enough, I don't really need that much money to be happy :) back at the forums I do have a donate link which helps to pay for my friend Ann M. who moderates. You can check it out here if you're interested: electricbikereview.com/forum/threads/hello-from-everywhere-friends-and-visits.6309/

      ElectricBikeReview.com I like how humble you are. But dude you have 57,000 subs. You need to monetize. I don't find it annoying at all. Haha

      I don’t think any of us would really mind if you put adverts in your videos, you seem to have a logo and perhaps, as others have mentioned, you should get some cool designs made And brand of some stuff... I think majority of people except the advert some videos are part and parcel of watching free content on TH-cam... I wouldn’t worry

      Actually, there are some people that I really like what they're doing and I WANT to support them, so I purposely let their ads play so I can do that. Your channel would be one of them...
