My bed is built up by dead branches, big logs and tree trunk disks( piece I found or driftwood ). I have to add new ones every year. But iv noticed that the decaying wood adds loads of nutrients and help to loosen clay soil.

I am a new gardener and making lots of mistakes. Often, I have no clue what the mistake is.
I bought 2 of these a few years ago. I planted them in afternoon shade. Clay spil, yes, but where I planted I dug out a nice spot and put rich soil.
They surprised me by staying green through our mildly freezing winter and came.back nicely in the spring, so I bought another and planted it next to the others.
That summer, the older one closer to the new plant died.
But plant 1 and 3 did well over the winter, even though it was a harder winter and they didn't stay green. They both came back strong in the spring.
But now plant #3 looks like it's about to croak. Only plant #1 looks robust and healthy. Thoughts?

I now live in Sacramento CA. I lived in Hawaii for a while and then in the San Francisco for many years. I found that we could grow most of the tropicals I had in Hawaii in SF, but Sacramento has hot, dry summers and chilly winters. I have found that I could grow a few of the hardier tropicals like; fan, pygmy date and queen palms, bougainvillea, plumbego, lantana, tibouchina, cyperus, bird of paradise, cannas, some gingers and elephant ears without winter protection, although the latter are perennials. We can use spider plants, begonias, various plectranthus and trandesia species as year round ground covers. Everything else is risky to leave out during the winter. But then there are many plants that I call faux-tropical. They are mostly shade loving, like this one, along with; hosta, heuchera, bergenia, dicentra, Japanese painted fern, liriope and mondo grass. I am sure there are many others. They have that certain 'tropical look" or at least look good with tropicals. Since it is too late in the season to plant outside now (we are in the 100 plus temperature range for the rest of the summer) I plan to get 3 or 4 of each to plant under the high deciduous trees in a certain area of our garden this fall. It is planted with agapanthus, hydrangeas and gingers now. The hydrangea and agapanthus are blooming right now and the gingers will bloom in late summer and fall, but adding these mostly spring bloomers will give us a longer flower season. Keep gardening

Wow! Sounds like your garden is spectacular! I agree, all of those shade lovers you listed can give a tropical aesthetic, i think the pulmonaria will look great where you described putting it!

I have lots of that plant up here in Ontario Canada Comes back every year, easy to split and transplant in other areas! I usually cut old flower spikes off, sometimes get another blooming before fall if Mother Nature cooperates up here lol I’ve found when old foliage gets tired looking I cut off, allow more air for new young growth. I’ve given many divisions away cuz they are such a nice delicate addition to any garden ❤️ I have some planted in front of my phlox that are very dark in the pink-fushia colours. Looks nice with the polka dots agains the tallish phlox. I call them the polka dot plant lol
