Great video! I love Lungwort. It's such a pretty perennial to have for Springtime flowers. And then the leaves look so pretty for the rest of the season! 🌸🥰
I recently found an unmarked and super discounted pot of what I am calling Diana Clare pulmonaria. It looks exactly like this so I'm pretty sure that's what it is. I easily split it into three as soon as I got it home for planting. Judging by how big your plant is, I should have spaced them out farther!
Loved the tips. I just planted lungwort this year. I hope to be able to divide and make more! Tip for deer: In seeking a fertilizer for hostas I discovered milorganite and read that it is a good deer deterrent. I initially just sprinkled it around the plants they liked but this past year my husband spread it over the whole yard in the spring with a spreader. No deer at all this past year which is unusual as we live in the country and they usually feast on many of my plants starting in the spring.
This was timely, I have some pulmonaria "Shrimps on the Barbie" that I should really divide -- they are huge. I find that the plants grow quickly and make an excellent ground cover: pretty flowers in spring and beautiful foliage the rest of the season. Moonshine is a good one too -- the leaves are predominantly silver and really pop in the shade. Mine have done pretty well in the dry shade of some white pines on a slope.
Your timing was spectacular in northern Illinois! An overgrown Lungwort, a warm day and a little time. Your info about the roots was key. I now have 3 large plant instead of a giant one. Thanks!
Diane Claire is a fave. I want to note that some growers rate Pulmonaria to zone 8. I'm in zone 9 Northern California wine country and all independent garden centers here offer Pulmonaria. I've been growing them for well over 30 years. Only issue I ever have is fall mildew. Because z9 in Florida, Texas and Calif are completely different climates we often get inaccurate ratings. PW is especially guilty of this. Z8 is often on the tag for plants we grow all day in Norcal. So I guess I want to say if you are a zone pusher look at what mail order nurseries offer in your area because chances are you can grow them. Love your content Erin.
Yes thank you! I have two shrimps on the barbie that are huge and need dividing. They are absolutely wonderful so I am so grateful to have more to spread around the garden!
First time planting pulmonaria this year. I bought a gallon size plant that was so root bound. I violently split it into three parts, so far so good. Rabbits wee nibbling on it for sure.
I currently have four plants and they are (were?) still kinda small, but when time comes I'll definitely remember this video! Thank you! Sadly, I thought the pulmonaria was deer and rabbit proof, but no. Something ate all four of mine down to the nub as well as the two heuchera planted nearby. It's been a tough year.
Love pulmonaria. I have one like yours, but it is barely hanging in after 4 years. I think I'll move it to the area where my other longhorns thrive. Weird, because the 2 areas have the same soil/light conditions. I think the atead where my 'shrimp on the barbie' pulmonaria is thriving may have a little more water.
Seems it would make a good hosta replacement, along with brunnera for the large and small leaf hosta replacement plants that deer don’t like. If only they were more available like hosta
This is a plant I would like to put into my new shade garden, but it will have to wait until next year as I didn't get the bed ready this year.....just ran out of time! Plus I am still unsure about the size and shape I want.
I find it to be very adaptable, but it appreciates moist soil. I do grow it in some dry shade and it gets dramatic which is a good reminder for me to throw some water on it.
I have mine in morning sun and rest of the day shade. I did lose one in the heat wave. Mine is twinkle toes pulmonary and I noticed it does reseed lightly but the seedlings do not look like parent plant. Different speckles and have not seen them bloom yet.
Thanks for this video. I purchased three Proven Winners pulmonaria last year and they have hardly grown even though I amended the soil with compost and worm castings. They receive decent water and are planted in shade. Not sure if I should be doing something else, but what I'm doing isn't getting me any results. I live in upstate SC with no rabbits or deer problems. Ideas to try? Thanks.
You certainly can, but I do almost all my cleanup in spring. By then they are usually crispy leaves so basically fall apart to be used as mulch around the plant. I should add that in warmer zones they can be almost evergreen.
Well I googled this and I got the following answers: - Not known to the be toxic - Toxic to cats - Highly toxic - Toxic in high doses. Like a lot of plants I'm going to say there is little reliable information on this. I pretty much assume that all plants are toxic to dogs when consumed in high doses as you can find almost any plant you can think of on that list.
@@TheImpatientGardener Very true. Lungwort is not something I have in my garden but the name sounded familiar of one to avoid. I remember when my black lab was a puppy she dug my gardens apart! lol I did have a concern about a few plants she may have gotten in contact with.
Congrats that you are contributing to Find Gardening! Yaaay!
Great tips. I love the Diana Clare, it really does brighten up the shade.
Another great video!
Love these short helpful videos!!
That was easy! Thank you Erin!💚
Great timing had no idea it was so easy like dividing a hosta. Thanks

Perfect timing, thank you for this video! For whatever reason this plant intimidates me when it comes to dividing!
Perfect timing for my Zone 5B garden in Denver.

@@beckydunlavey5623 Yay! Love to hear it!

Oh that’s excellent information to have. Thank you for sharing that!

Thanks, I have never divided one of those. 😊
Thanks for sharing this video. I definitely need to divide my Lung wort. Project for this weekend 😅
I have a hard time finding this plant, actually. DEFINITELY want some for my shade/woodland area. Thank you for the info, as always!!!
Thanks so much, Erin! I have so much shade, as well as deer, in my zone 6 gardens. Can’t wait to try these plants
Huh, I hadn't thought of this but I have a few favorites I can do this with so thanks for the idea!
I adore that icy blue colour!!
I planted some lung wart 2 years ago .. og my word ❤❤❤ beautiful plant. So I bought more this year. They are stunning
I finally found some at a nearby extension sale - I can’t wait for mine to fill in and provide that lovely silver to the garden.
My kind of woman 😊
I planted High Contrast in the spring. Can’t wait for it to get bigger so I can divide it!
First time planting pulmonaria this year. I bought a gallon size plant that was so root bound. I violently split it into three parts, so far so good. Rabbits wee nibbling on it for sure.
It’s a tough plant and will have no problems with a little violence if needed (or desired).
Erin, super helpful my sister in Philly needs these the deer are terrible in her area.
The deer in Philadelphia are sort of crazy; I feel bad for her!
You look really good. I love the haircut. My hair drives me nuts when I work in the garden.
Thanks
Such a pretty plant but I don’t have enough shade to grow! I’ll watch yours!🌿
Diane Claire is definitely one of the best...love them.
Dig up and pull apart replant!
Thank you ! I was ready to just cut mine in half !!

Let me have a word with your deer and rabbits! I'll let them know they are NOT supposed to do that. :)

It’s a good once to have on the list and I find that it grows quickly so there’s no harm in waiting.
Thank you. Do you find they need a lot of water? Mine droop so fast!
I didn’t ask but I’m so happy you did. Erin can this same instruction be used for my Breunnera plant? 🤯phone keep changing my spelling.
Question. I love this plant so I’m excited you did this video. Is it ok for MN zone 4 to split now or shld I wait until spring?
I’d go for it now. It’s a cutting it a little close but it’s a tough plant. Of course sowing would be fine as well but you’ll miss flowering.
This is on my list for next year. Question: I have wet shade and dry shade. Which one should I plant it in? Love your videos!
I find it to be very adaptable, but it appreciates moist soil. I do grow it in some dry shade and it gets dramatic which is a good reminder for me to throw some water on it.
I didn’t know what mine was called and it has spread nicely…
Erin,
Have you ever divided Joe Pye Weed? Of so, is it just as easy?
Thank you. 😊
Ha- this is a lot more gentle than the method that I used. Hopefully I will get lucky.
I have mine in morning sun and rest of the day shade. I did lose one in the heat wave. Mine is twinkle toes pulmonary and I noticed it does reseed lightly but the seedlings do not look like parent plant. Different speckles and have not seen them bloom yet.

Enjoyed the video ( u k )
When you say that the lungwort looks "wretched", does that include when all the leaves are laying flat on the ground?
Yes it can. If they look deflated or brown even when they aren’t thirsty a full cut back can perk them up with nice fresh foliage.
do you cut lungwort plants back to the ground in Fall?
You certainly can, but I do almost all my cleanup in spring. By then they are usually crispy leaves so basically fall apart to be used as mulch around the plant. I should add that in warmer zones they can be almost evergreen.
@@TheImpatientGardener Thanks. This is a new plant for me and your video was very helpful.
Pray for me! I have 30 plants to design and plant, on the fly, right now...I am ....freaking out!🤪😜
My pulmonaria keeps fizzling out. It just disappears over winter and never comes back. Zone 5a Iowa 🤷🏼♀️
I don't even need to divide mine it self seeds all over the place for me.
Are they toxic to dogs?
Well I googled this and I got the following answers:

The deer have eaten all mine off lately, so not necessarily deer proof but they also eat all my flowering tobacco also. Very hungry deer🤬
We need to have a word with those deer.
