What is that process he does when he wraps the blade in that twine and covers it with that pink stuff? Do a lot of blacksmiths do this? Out of all of the ones I've watched, he's the only one I see do this. What does that do exactly?

I'd call that a respectable mix of old & new techniques, & while the old masters would call it a copy, they'd prob'ly call it a GOOD copy & offer an apprenticeship.
Didn't downvote, but this is not even close to katana standards, I'm sure that blade gets dull very fast and the handle is very low quality... It's nice that he got this done with stuff in his backyard, but I wouldn't even call this a katana. They are done with specific ratios of steel and iron, and the blades are folded in the process, which hasn't happened here.
His effort and the *extremely* shiny object produced appeals to people who have little idea about swords and blacksmithing, but the more knowledgeable folks probably don't find this video pretty or impressive at all. I won't go into great detail for now, but the main reasons are these: 1) Some of his techniques are fairly cringeworthy (no, this is due to lack of skill and knowledge, not lack of tooling) 2) Some aspects of the sword simply show lack of quality and 'lazy' craftsmanship 3) Due to many minor and not-so-minor details, this looks nothing like a traditionally made katana or a good modern reproduction.
@@tomahawk014 Yeah I get what you're saying, nothing traditional about it, but it's cool in its own right. I admire the traditional quenching of a katana, and only someone hardcore would attempt a water quench.
True, but this is the making of a replica...not a real Katana. The forging process of a real katana would also have employed a folding process of the steel many times and then forge-welding in a different steel so that there's a different hardness/toughness scale between the back of the blade and the edge. The quench following that step is what achieves the curve you are referring to.
@@nuancolar7304 you only need to fold the blade if the steel has impurities. and there is no welding process. clay is put on the top of the blade then its heat treated causing the different properties of the back of the blade and and cutting side
@@1337-Nathaniel I can see what you're saying, but it also makes me wonder about things on the molecular level. Since quenching realigns the molecular structure, I have thought that hammer forging might be stronger because there is more material hammered into a denser structure.
Looks cool, but there are definitely some issues. The Habaki and spacers don't seem to fit properly, probably because there was a bunch of excess wax melted when the mold was created for the Habaki. The other thing I noticed was how the blade needed to be wiggled into the scabbard, wouldn't this damage the blade over time? I thought the only thing that was supposed to be tight is where the scabbard meets the Habaki and that the blade should not really touch the interior of the scabbard. Overall though, I thought the blade looked very cool.
