DAMASCUS DOES NOT FUCKING EXSIST. PERIOD. This and every other metal like it are PATTERN WELDED STEEL. Damascus even when it did exsist was a fucking horrible metal. It was beautiful, yes. It could hold a razors edge, yes. However if you dropped it on the fucking ground it would shatter like glass. Why do you think they used silk to demonstrate its sharpness!? Because anything else would chip the edge. Damascus was a decorative steel. It had over 2% carbon content making it complete shit. Also just making a raw ingot could take up to 5 days of continuous work. It was a crucible "steel". Being made that way is what gave it, it's pattern. A pattern that no modern day Blacksmith has ever even come close to reproducing. One day very soon the FTC is going to weigh in on this and ban the branding "Damascus" cause it's a fucking lie, it's false advertising. No one is making Damascus. Ever.

The way that billet slid out of the canister was just... The most satisfying thing I've seen in a long time. Wow. Don't you wish everything was that easy in metal working? 😂😂 my wife asked me what was wrong because i made a strange noise when i saw it.
According to John from Old Hickory Forge, length of the sword determined by user height, for his extra tall 6'4" or so frame, his is supposed to be about 30" blade.
Im 5'9" and i was going for a 30" but forged a 28" and ended up cutting they trouble areas and ended up with a 24.5" which is just over the upper limit of a wakizashi or a kodachi.

I had a few and it sucked. Normally i would grind all of them out in between the forging process but the time limit had me stressing over getting done.
why do modern sword makers use so much metal? i watched a japanese master make a Katana n the amount of metal they use is literally EXACTLY the right amount. of course they do it all by hand but still makes me wonder why modern smiths use so much metal
Different smiths have different reasons. Most call it sacrificial steel. Make a mistake, cut it off, still got steel to play around with. Not to mention when doing certain types of damascus, the kerf loss can be extreme, especially with feather damascus for example.
I often make extra billet to produce cooking knives, kiridashi, etc. may as well! Also, matching gane in a wakizashi or tanto can be cool. You can get quite precise with steel quantity if you want to. In Japan steel is a valuable natural resource and in the US its cheap and plentiful. Go price some hitachi blue paper steel compared to a chunk of 1095.
It all depends on what steel you use. Most damascus must be cut to shape, not forged, because that would mess up the pattern. Some people like extra steel to have the freedom to change the blade on the fly. That japanese Smith knew what he wanted to do and probably made many before.

Definitely try it. I have a chef knife on my desk from the same stuff. Cant wait to finish it up so i can check out how the pattern looks on a wider surface.
It's beautiful, but I like the tsuba most of all. If you could figure a way to do that with all the other small metal parts instead of the copper, it would be even better. Maybe smaller bearings.
this is just great! looks magical! 👍 Perhaps the defect appeared due to the fact that you assembled the forging unevenly and immediately completely filled the bearings and then tried to fill the voids with powder. When you start pulling or twisting the workpiece, I advise you to sprinkle borax
Ive never sprinkled borax inside a can bit it might be a thought. I think it came from the twist. I dont think it was too noticeable in the video but i sheared it a little in my first twist. I over twisted and that caused parts to come up. I guess i pushed it back once i forged it back into a bar and missed it when i did my cut for the tip
@@JPsBladeworksYou definitely can’t put borax inside, but when you remove the casing or twist it you need to pour it in. Most likely, there was simply emptiness inside and the metal was not welded. But the katana is great
@@DamnWoodWorker I borax all my billets after they come out of the casing. I just dont show it on the video because it just lengths an already long video. Normally Canister damascus comes out with surface cracks so its always safe to pour some borax even if its not needed. Thank you for the advice. I appreciate it.

@@kisukeurahara1832Ancient smithing methods are cool as hell and definitely need to be respected but given the significantly better metals and more advanced machinery it's probably safe to say there's no way the quality is significantly higher than the quality that exists everywhere else.
@@moresomoze The Japanese katanas are on a completely different level in terms of craftsmanship from my experience. A polisher can take up to a month to polish one sword. You can't replicate that with a simple belt sander.
i've watched a lot of these style videos over the last few years, I've got to say. The removal of the canister beautiful and clean. i couldn't even guess how many i've watched, new to your channel btw. but i've never seen one come out that clean and smooth. great work. very nice blade.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone smash a can vertically like that for the first press. That was neat. Looked like the can almost peeled itself off right then.
I always do top first to weld it because its pressured from all sides since the can is one solid piece. I used to do sides and they would crack or pop and create unwanted bulges and cracks at the end of the finished billets.
You spend days making this and editing only to show none of the finished work. I’m glad I skipped through parts that were dull only to find nothing at the end. Good job for your first attempt.

@fringeminority150 its white spray paint. Does the same thing as white out but applies easier and more evenly and dries a bit faster. But it has to be white or it wont work.

Killer look! I may try this now that I have figured out how to patina copper. The last one I did was just like this with a sanmai blade, and fire-red copper for everythint.
I really liked how u did the handle with vinegar, salt & brass... rather, how it came out... The blade was good to but I hadn't seen that combo for the handle prior to this video 👏👏🙌👌
i've seen a lot of damascus works but holy hell that pattern is gorgeous to look at, probably one of if not the most unique pattern i've seen so far. a lot of others can look pretty similar to each other

why do modern sword makers use so much metal? i watched a japanese master make a Katana n the amount of metal they use is literally EXACTLY the right amount. of course they do it all by hand but still makes me wonder why modern smiths use so much metal
Different smiths have different reasons. Most call it sacrificial steel. Make a mistake, cut it off, still got steel to play around with.
Not to mention when doing certain types of damascus, the kerf loss can be extreme, especially with feather damascus for example.
I often make extra billet to produce cooking knives, kiridashi, etc. may as well! Also, matching gane in a wakizashi or tanto can be cool.
You can get quite precise with steel quantity if you want to. In Japan steel is a valuable natural resource and in the US its cheap and plentiful. Go price some hitachi blue paper steel compared to a chunk of 1095.
It all depends on what steel you use. Most damascus must be cut to shape, not forged, because that would mess up the pattern. Some people like extra steel to have the freedom to change the blade on the fly. That japanese Smith knew what he wanted to do and probably made many before.
Cause they all stupid content creator with only online experience 😂😂
Because material is more ready and not as costly. Plus you can reuse things you cut off and what you grind off if you want. 💯

The patina on the copper is such a unique touch!
It's beautiful, but I like the tsuba most of all. If you could figure a way to do that with all the other small metal parts instead of the copper, it would be even better. Maybe smaller bearings.

Perhaps the defect appeared due to the fact that you assembled the forging unevenly and immediately completely filled the bearings and then tried to fill the voids with powder. When you start pulling or twisting the workpiece, I advise you to sprinkle borax
Ive never sprinkled borax inside a can bit it might be a thought. I think it came from the twist. I dont think it was too noticeable in the video but i sheared it a little in my first twist. I over twisted and that caused parts to come up. I guess i pushed it back once i forged it back into a bar and missed it when i did my cut for the tip
@@JPsBladeworksYou definitely can’t put borax inside, but when you remove the casing or twist it you need to pour it in. Most likely, there was simply emptiness inside and the metal was not welded. But the katana is great
@@DamnWoodWorker I borax all my billets after they come out of the casing. I just dont show it on the video because it just lengths an already long video. Normally Canister damascus comes out with surface cracks so its always safe to pour some borax even if its not needed. Thank you for the advice. I appreciate it.

@@kisukeurahara1832Ancient smithing methods are cool as hell and definitely need to be respected but given the significantly better metals and more advanced machinery it's probably safe to say there's no way the quality is significantly higher than the quality that exists everywhere else.
@@moresomoze The Japanese katanas are on a completely different level in terms of craftsmanship from my experience. A polisher can take up to a month to polish one sword. You can't replicate that with a simple belt sander.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone smash a can vertically like that for the first press. That was neat. Looked like the can almost peeled itself off right then.
I always do top first to weld it because its pressured from all sides since the can is one solid piece. I used to do sides and they would crack or pop and create unwanted bulges and cracks at the end of the finished billets.

@fringeminority150 its white spray paint. Does the same thing as white out but applies easier and more evenly and dries a bit faster. But it has to be white or it wont work.

Killer look! I may try this now that I have figured out how to patina copper. The last one I did was just like this with a sanmai blade, and fire-red copper for everythint.
I want to try a fire red version with a different pattern.
