They aren’t disabled due to physical problems or even bipolar or depression. They have intellectual problems meaning they don’t understand money, for one. May not even understand numbers, and generally test as having the understanding of a child. And I mean child as under 10 years old. If I had responsibility for their money, I’d deal with mechanics and businesses directly, rather than handling them money. But I’ve worked as a therapist and Mark and Tyler have no experience with such problems.

I don’t really think they scammed anyone I think the whole family is poor and their friends too, so I think they were probably just handing out money to everyone around. Whether the money is crowdfunded, paid out of Tyler’s own pockets, or just installing a house on their property, the same truth will be exposed. The Whittakers from West Virginia cannot be trusted to be responsible with what you give them. If you give them groceries, then they think it’s okay to treat you like an ATM. Personally I don't think a new house should be bought for the Whittakers. They won't look after it, and it will look the same as their current house within a few years. Best thing to do is just try and improve what they already have.

This is going to sound harsh, but I speak from some similar experience. Firstly, they don’t need a new home. They won’t care for it and they’ll destroy it until it looks like their current home. Secondly, and more importantly, you cannot ever give people like this money. You have to pay directly for the thing for them. The money will always go missing. When I still had contact with my mom we had to go buy the gas for her car for her. Otherwise she’d be right back asking for gas money again bc she used it for something else. Rinse and repeat with everything. Anyway, as much as we want to help some people we can’t. In turn we end up exhausting resources and energy; wasting it on people who don’t appreciate it and use it for what it’s intended for. Edited to add: the mom/grandma/whoever she is, absolutely knows where the money is going and why. Her refusal to talk about it is more of an admission than anything.

Long story short. Tyler put himself in the middle of a situation where Mark had had a 20-year relationship with the Whittaker's. Mark had a gofundme for the Whitakers (I was a contributor) and although the money on THE SECOND fund was for a house, it was still for the Whittakers. When they asked for the money, he couldn't say no, it was THEIR money. Mark would have made sure that BJ got help and would have continued the relationship. The only thing that Tyler said that is credible is that he should have stayed out of it. Tyler was just trying to leach off of the Whittakers notoriety.

I'd have to say hiring a full time caretaker might have been the best thing to do. some one to cook, clean and organize. this family might not be the best at money management and self control.
In the long run, that would take a lot more than $150K. For an annual salary for someone to do all of that for this entire family, and do it properly, would only last 3-4 years with that 150K, and that is a best case scenario. Eventually, the general interest from the internet would dry up; most people will simply stop supporting them.

There’s definitely cases of those who don’t care, but they have specific types of mentally behind them. For example during Katrina many in NOLA abused the 2k money from FEMA they had gave for individuals to rebuild. They just used it to buy luxury products while technically being homeless. It’s a cultural and mindset issue, but definitely isn’t most people in general.

This is going to sound harsh, but I speak from some similar experience. Firstly, they don’t need a new home. They won’t care for it and they’ll destroy it until it looks like their current home. Secondly, and more importantly, you cannot ever give people like this money. You have to pay directly for the thing for them. The money will always go missing. When I still had contact with my mom we had to go buy the gas for her car for her. Otherwise she’d be right back asking for gas money again bc she used it for something else. Rinse and repeat with everything. Anyway, as much as we want to help some people we can’t. In turn we end up exhausting resources and energy; wasting it on people who don’t appreciate it and use it for what it’s intended for.
Edited to add: the mom/grandma/whoever she is, absolutely knows where the money is going and why. Her refusal to talk about it is more of an admission than anything.

Long story short. Tyler put himself in the middle of a situation where Mark had had a 20-year relationship with the Whittaker's. Mark had a gofundme for the Whitakers (I was a contributor) and although the money on THE SECOND fund was for a house, it was still for the Whittakers. When they asked for the money, he couldn't say no, it was THEIR money. Mark would have made sure that BJ got help and would have continued the relationship. The only thing that Tyler said that is credible is that he should have stayed out of it. Tyler was just trying to leach off of the Whittakers notoriety.

I don’t think Tyler had good intentions going into this simply because he has no idea how to deal with people with mental illnesses, physical disabilities, poverty and substance abuse. He only apologised because he wants Mark to fund the modular home and come out of it looking like a hero who solved the problem. A problem he created in the first place.
I'd have to say hiring a full time caretaker might have been the best thing to do. some one to cook, clean and organize. this family might not be the best at money management and self control.
In the long run, that would take a lot more than $150K. For an annual salary for someone to do all of that for this entire family, and do it properly, would only last 3-4 years with that 150K, and that is a best case scenario. Eventually, the general interest from the internet would dry up; most people will simply stop supporting them.

There’s definitely cases of those who don’t care, but they have specific types of mentally behind them. It’s a cultural and mindset issue, but definitely isn’t most people in general.

@@jeremyolson3837 - You're right, I think Mark's problem is that his personal beliefs have got in the way of him from taking the best possible action, and I don't think that's Buying Them A House. They need care, not stuff. While their property is run down, it'd be livable if you could get them a professional carer to go in maybe once a week and help them out, but who isn't just handing them cash.
Tyler's contribution to this equation is purely negative, because a) he's not going to buy them a house, and b) if he did, he would either move on from them immediately, or come back later to make content about how they didn't look after it properly. He's a parasite.

Marks channel isn’t based on the Whitakers it never was. He has thousands of interviews and not one person has accused him of anything other than trying to help them. As big as his channel is if there was dirt to be found somebody would be talking by now. I hope he is truly done with the Whitakers and Tyler, but his channel shines a light on some big issues and gives ppl who don’t feel seen or heard a voice. Tyler owes Mark an apology, as Mark provided the Whittakers with money upon their request. It was the Whittakers who misused the funds, not Mark. Mark produced evidence of the transaction, which was confirmed by BJ. Tyler's investigation was baseless and done to make Mark look bad.

A story about a big youtuber being outed as a scammer would get a lot more views than “inbred family uses donation money on drugs” and that’s probably why Tyler didn’t dig deeper before throwing out accusations. He’s not innocent just because he gave a half ass apology riddled with excuses, or because the family misused the money. The family’s at fault too, but Tyler’s failure to investigate is a completely different matter. This apology doesn’t mean anything to me because it’s basically “I messed up, but I had my reasons for jumping to conclusions.” It’s not valid because he apologizes for accusing Mark, but that fuck up was only a result of not doing enough investigation. Again, it seems more like he was too excited to ruin someone’s reputation to boost his own.
