I bought a book years ago that teaches the traditional ways, by Carole Thomerson, 1989, "The Complete Upholsterer".

I’ve watched and read a lot of British sites, they seem to have maintained traditional skills and materials better, but I think this is the best on both sides of the water. That I even have a monster TV was primarily so I could watch upholstery videos in better detail!

One of these days I'll tackle my old 20's-30's recliner. Thanks for giving me inspiration. The hardest thing for me is finding appropriate cover material.
If you want something basic, often Big Duck Canvas has linen blends (and dyed canvas), or you could try Mood Fabrics online. Mood does haves Search category of ‘Home Fabrics’ and those do have the weight of the fabric and a description included so you aren’t wasting a lot of time. They also sell samples for a reasonable price.

@@MoggiesTen I’ve seen quite a few damasks, right now some silk damasks, and some mohair on Mood. Lots of wool and plaids. eBay has some great fabrics; I go by their review percentages, they really have to be high numbers and rated 98-100. I’ve seen a fair amount of Ballard’s mohair velvet with some lovely reviews. I’ve been eyeing it off and on for a few years now but I need quite a chunk. If you like very traditional there’s always the heavy weight tartan route. All do samples.

No on Home Depot. Take note that the springs I used were from down-sizing larger spring units.

I buy Marshall units from Active Foam and Supply in Chicago but you likely need a commercial account with tax exempt status. The spring height in the video is 3 1/2". They're available in differing firmness. Good luck, "Buck".

Thank you so much for the video. What size are these springs and can I buy them separately (without buying Marshall unit) and what would be spring type and size? (I am from UK) Would arm springs be suitable or fabric would not hold up to heavier spring? Also when you make this unit from scratch that is from your own springs do you have to make the fabric pocket height so that springs are compressed about one third once they are in the fabric pocket? Hello Buckminster. I really like your videos, your skills are obvious. I have a couch I am redoing and the two cushions that sit on the deck have springs inside, however the two are smaller than the width of the deck. So I want to make them larger, I am wondering how to judge the amount of springs to use and then add the cotton batting..in order to get the box cushion the correct size to fill the space once done? I was also thinking I may change to a single bench cushion from the two but am not sure this is a good idea.
What do you think?

Ideally, having the spring unit approximately 1 1/2" smaller on all four sides allows for equal padding materials, usually four to five wraps of cotton. Adding or subtracting 3" diameter springs makes it difficult to balance out evenly. The cushions are VERY frustrating to get done right the first try. I like the idea of one long cushion rather than two but it will be challenging. To this day, I've had more trouble fitting cushions than anything else with 48 years in the trade. Good luck. "Buck"

How did you come up with 14"x5" for the measurement? Are the springs 7" tall and 5" wide?
I simply used the original cover material for reference and measured accordingly. A strip 14" tall folded in half gave me the 7" tall pocket.
